he Northern Neck is such a largeexpanse with so many diversepopulations and locations, it’s hard

to know about it all. I find that to be true eventhough my profession requires that I travelfar and wide quite regularly, which offers theopportunity to find neat places, some old andsome new.

Over a year ago a friend of mineintroduced me to the owner/proprietor ofWideRiver Gallery in Colonial Beach. Sincethen I’ve been there many times and havedeveloped real respect for this entrepreneur,Connie Canby, who exhibits fine artwork—selections that should satisfy most in searchof a special piece. Given 10 years living inManhattan taking advantage of the galleryscene, I hardly expected to find such a placeon the Northern Neck.

The Gallery—part of the Espresso CoffeeShop building (once the Esso gas station)—offers changing exhibits of artists’ work on amonthly basis. Ceramic work, jewelry, woodworking abound, as well as paintingsand fine prints. Prices are reasonable so manyare able to work within a budget. Certainly, this is a place to consider especially whencoming from DC or returning to Maryland. And every 2nd Friday, year-round, galleriesand small shops are open for the evening withrefreshments regularly offered.

Right next door to the Gallery there is a newbusiness, a gourmet food shop—Tides InnMarket—that opened this past year. Theyoung woman who runs the shop, (CaitlinDavis) was trained at the Culinary Institute ofAmerica and is the daughter of owners and

managers of anaffiliated B&B. Thislittle shop is a truespecialty shop withsoups, entrees andappetizers as well asbreads and pastries.

Diagonally acrossthe street from theGallery there's acompletely differentculinary experiencefor lunch or dinner. Seaside Restaurant offersexcellent Thai or French cuisine. (With asuccessful Thai Restaurant in BowlingGreen, owner Upin Raungtriphop opened theColonial Beach location in mid-2009). I hadheard wonderful things about the food there,so I just had to try it, and try it I did--manytimes.

This article is not the place for a restaurantreview, but if youenjoy Thai food orwould appreciate fine French cuisine, this should be adestination. Since theestablishment is fairlysmall, reservations areencouraged, especiallyfor weekends (summermonths are much morebusy). You'll find thatManager Noi Sing will make sure you'll have avery enjoyable and tasty experience. (OpenTuesday through Sunday.)

Travelling down the ‘Neck from ColonialBeach, an interesting stop is the antiquesplace named Fine Things. Located at the lightin Callao with perhaps 3000 square feet of“stuff” to ponder, this place is fun. We’re nottalking high-end antiques, so don’t go there ifyou are looking for that special $5,000 chairto go with a table you have. Rather it is aplace where numerous vendors haveconsigned items. This allows for a realpossibility of finding a great bargain. So takeyour time and remember, look upstairs too.

Going a bit more southeast our last “on-the-’Neck” location is Fleeton Fields Bed &Breakfast. Having heard it recommended byfriends, and wanting to know more aboutFleeton, I decided to invite myself to take alook. Driving into town the sign says, Ibelieve, population 89. And everywhere youlook there is water to be seen.

Fleeton is charming—just remote enough tobe authentic—it hasn’t been overwhelmed bytoo much progress. So rather than thinking thatthis is out of the way, you might see this as thecenter of your vacation universe. From thislocation you can travel the Northern Neck forday trips whether you are here for a longweekend or for a week. The rooms arecharming, and filled with beautiful antiques.During "season" you can experience the

gardens of beautifulr o s e s a n d ev e r -changing perennialblooms. Close toReedville, the boat toTangier or SmithIs land, a n d e a s ydriving distance toKilmarnock, it istruly a quiet oasis tocall home.

The last destination, but not the least is theEssex Inn located in Tappahannock (justacross the river from the ‘Neck). Newinnkeepers oversee a majestic, gracioushouse in the historic sect ion ofTappahannock—a block from theRappahannock river. There are rooms both inthe main house and also four apartments in aseparate building. This smaller building wasonce the laundry and has been converted. There are two apartments, I believe, thatallow for people who travel with a small dogor cat. What a great opportunity for anyonetravelling who would like to have a place thatis cozy and in a beautiful setting.

Whether you are in the main house or in anapartment, the Inn offers old-world charm ina location where you can walk to restaurantsand amenities.

Although not a destination, an upcomingbook provides great insight into the historyand architecture of the Northern Neck. TheUniversity of Virginia Press is distributingthe just published Historic Sites in Virginia’sNorthern Neck & Essex County: A Guide(2011). Preservation Virginia, Northern NeckBranch set out on this project about two yearsago. The result is now available to the public.

Introductory chapters set the scene for thesix chapters covering predominantly pre-Civi l War s i tes of King George,Westmoreland, Northumberland, Lancaster,Richmond and Essex counties. Twenty-sixmaps and more than 400 photos provideadditional tools for using the Guide. You maybe surprised at all of the history that is rightoutside your door as you drive through thishistoric area and special part of the world.

Kathryn Murray is principal broker with River &Rural Realty based in the Warsaw area. She is also anavid photographer who carries her camera with hereverywhere. Photos in this article are by the author.

Lots of stuff and some real bargains, too.

hen Captain John Smith firstarrived in the Chesapeake Bayduring the early 17th century, he

noted such an abundance of oysters that itmade it dangerous to navigate his ship! Sincethen, over the years there has been a steadydecline in the number of oysters harvestedfrom those same waters.

It has been said that the oyster populationof the Chesapeake Bay was once able to filterthe water of the entire Bay in about oneweek! That was many years before thesetasty morsels began to drastically decline dueto over harvesting, habitat destruction and thediseases of Dermo and MSX whichpenetrated the oyster population. Forinstance, habitat destruction was causedyears ago by large dredges being draggedacross the bottom of the waterways to capturethe oysters for harvesting. It was later learnedthat the watermen were ripping up the naturalhabitat that was helping to produce largecrops of oysters. MSX and Dermo are notcaused by viruses, but rather by a single cellprotozoa. Neither of the parasites is harmfulto humans. These diseases were firstidentified in the mid-Atlantic in the 1950’s.Dermo is native to the Chesapeake Bay andusually kills oysters in the second or thirdyear. Apparently, MSX was introduced intothe region in the 1950’s when an attempt wasmade to introduce a non-native oyster.

Oysters in the Northern Neck have been onthe decline since the early 1900’s. Many ofthe area oyster houses, mostly family-ownedfor generations, have had to supplement theirharvests with oysters shipped in from theGulf of Mexico. According to theEnvironmental Protection Agency, it nowtakes the population of Bay oysters a whole

W

Where Have All The Oysters Gone?By Barbara Jean LeFon

year to filter the same volume of water thatwas filtered in one week!

In the past Virginia was producing 7-8million bushels of oysters a year. However, recently the oyster harvest has been as smallas 20,000 bushels. As a result of the oysterdecline, the largest oyster processors in thearea have made significant investments inattempting to establish an oyster hatcheryprogram and other aquaculture methods toincrease the production of oyster larvaelocally to help end its dependence on out-of-state oyster larvae. The overseer of theNorthern Neck hatchery establishment is theVirginia Institute of Marine Science.

Today, commercial oyster aquaculture, private oyster gardening, the establishment ofoyster reefs and even the testing of non-native species of oysters in our waterways areall promising ways in which we areincreasing our native oyster population. Many successful restoration projects areshowing that fewer oysters are dying fromdisease and, together with oyster farming andoyster reef building, are all combining to givecause for an optimistic comeback of theoyster population in Virginia and theChesapeake Bay.

elaxing doesn’t have to mean boringon the Northern Neck. If yourinterests include hiking, fishing,

boating, golfing, nature, art, history orantiques, you’re sure to find it here!

While you are here, spend some timetouring the countryside by bike or car. Themajor routes and several scenic byways aremarked on the center spread map.

Anyone who spends much time in theNorthern Neck quickly discovers that thequickest route between two points is notalways by car. Water is still very much a partof our transportation system!

Virginia’s Northern Neck… Slow down, relax and hurry back!

By Captain Billy Pipkin

including croaker, spot, flounder, trout, bluefish and striped bass.

The protected calm waters of the riverand inlets offer small boat owners theopportunity to enjoy the rich yields ofour waters without worries of roughwater and wave action. Kayaking hasgrown in popularity among naturalists, birdwatchers, and now anglers. There isnothing like the feeling of hooking a fivepound fish and having it pull your kayak.

The mouths of rivers in this region arelarge. They offer many of the same fishfound upriver as well as species located inthe open waters of the Chesapeake Bay.In the big water, additional fish on themenu include, larger striped bass (up to50 pounds), Bluefish in the 5-10 poundclass, cobia, and lesser known speciessuch as triple fin, pompano, porgy, tautog, and sheepshead. Part of the joy of fishingthe open waters of the bay is the wonder

warm gentle breeze fills the air,the sky begins to lighten and asymphony of songbirds welcome

a new day. As the sun breaks over thehorizon, silhouettes of gulls can be seengliding above the calm waters. This ishow a day in ‘our world’ begins.

Virginia’s Northern Neck is surroundedby water. You’ll find over 1,100 miles ofshoreline offering access to some of thebest fishing and boating on the east coast.

There are bald eagles, ospreys, ducksand otters, oysters, clams and crabs. Butdon’t forget our world renowned fishingthat has made this region famous for overtwo centuries.

There are numerous species of fish andother seafood available in our waters. Theupper rivers offer an array of fresh waterfish including catfish, perch, and evenlarge mouth bass. Within the tidal areas of our rivers we find a greater variety

of what’s going to be found at the end ofsuitable for tiny boats, we have severalU.S. Coast Guard approved charter boatsavailable that can take you to the fish.

Whether you spent the day exploring orfishing, the rich golden hue of our sunsetsis a reminder of the many naturaltreasures here in Virginia’s NorthernNeck.

Whether you’re exploring our waterslike Huck Finn, wetting lines from yoursmall skiff or chartering one of our sportfishing charter boats, you are sure to finda piece of ‘our world’ left in your heart.Come for a visit, slow down, relax andhurry back!

was glad to get my book on themarket about growing up inKilmarnock. I have to give this

publication most of the credit for inspiringme and giving me the opportunity to writean article each year. Then I have to thankthe readers that pass on great complimentsto the owners of this publication aboutthose articles.

One of the great things about being anative and personally watching the towngrow, change and evolve is sharing thatwith others. Each year I have to thinkabout what I can share with the readers ofthis guide and today it came to me!

I was in the middle of town coming outof a store when I noticed my grandsonDexter walking down the street. Twelveyear old Dexter was walking from schoolwith two of his friends so I waited forthem to catch up to me.

As we got in front of the Bay Trust, Iasked him if he knew what used to be inits place? He didn’t so I told him it was aused car lot when I was his age and priorto that the Hazel Hotel. The Hazel Hotelwas a very well known spot right in thecenter of town.

Next door is a service station owned byone of my old school (and out of) buddiesCalvin Luckham. I told Dexter there usedto be a big brick home there but in the1950’s that was torn down and replacedwith that station. A fond memory of thatwas my grandmother arranging for me toplay the organ for the opening. Here I was50 years later telling my grandson thatstory.

We moved on down the street and Ipointed out the grocery store on the cornerthat is now vacant but for years was one oftwo (at times three) downtown grocerystores.

I pointed out the building on the cornerof Waverly and Main where his motherworks and told him 60 years prior “her”great-grandmother ran her florist shop inthat same building. Then he said themagic words “I read that in your book”!

I

little boy growing up in Kilmarnock, Va.!Those small town events like todaybecome amazing memories to pass along.

Next I pointed to a building and said“That’s the movie theater” to which hesaid “The sports Centre”?

So that put in place the opportunity forme to tell him how my brother Tom and Iwould go see a scary movie then seewhich one could get out of the theatrefastest and go hide down Waverly Ave andwait to scare the other one. Didn’t matterhow many times we did it, we just jumpedout from a different bush, yelled and ranhome.

Dexter liked that today but more thanthat, it was very special to me. Just maybeif we have those kinds of walks moreoften and I can let him relive my boyhoodtown in his mind, one day he will tell hischildren or a friend “Granddaddy ToldMe” and give them all the details about a Back Cover of Steve’s book
