The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The fi rst associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At fi rst, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for

students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefi ned its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defi ned their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA

received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The fi rst bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

USC Aiken Convocation Center

The Convocation Center gives the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a state-of-the-art facility in which to practice and play and gives the athletic department as a whole expanded space and modern offi ces in which to operate. The main arena seats 3,600 for athletic events.

Tennis Complex

Head Coach Kara Kreutzer/2010 Season Review

2010 Cross Country Season in Review The 2010 University of South Carolina Aiken Cross Country campaign truly showed that the future is bright for Pacer Cross Country. The true standout of the 2010 season for USC Aiken was freshman Keely Gillespie. A product of local North Augusta High School, Gillespie broke almost every school record in the book during her freshman season. She was also chosen as the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year after earning First-Team All-Confer-ence accolades at the 2010 PBC Fall Festival. Gillespie broke the school 5K record with a time of 19:34 at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational on Oct. 23, 2010. She missed out by one second in claiming the school 6K record with a time of 24:21 at the 2010 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. Gillespie was just one part of a strong effort for Pacer Cross Country in 2010 that saw USC Aiken fi nish second in two meets. Under the direction of fi fth-year head coach Larry Milner, the Pacers were second in the NCAA Division II portion of the Gamecock Invitational on Sept. 3, 2010 and at the inaugural Bridgestone-Pac-er Invitational on Sept. 25, 2010. Always a strong team academically, USC Aiken had two players nab academic honors from the PBC with seniors Nicole Maitland and Mathilde Grenet picking up PBC All-Academic plaudits. Both earned the honor for the third time in their career. A former tennis standout at USC Aiken, Grenet collected her fi rst two in women’s tennis. Maitland earned all three in cross coun-try. The honors went along with her three all-conference honors.

Kara Kreutzer is in her fi rst season in charge of the University of South Carolina Aiken Cross Country program. Kreutzer came to USC Aiken after spending the past year as a student assistant coach for the Augusta State men’s and women’s cross country teams. “I think Kara is a young, energetic coach who will hit the ground running with our program,” noted Warrick. “She has been a part of a great cross country program at Augusta State and she will bring good knowledge and experience as a former collegiate runner to USC Aiken. Her background in the Peach Belt Conference will bode well for us as we prepare to host the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championship at Pacer Path.” A December 2010 graduate of Augusta State with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology, Kreutzer ran cross country and track for the Peach Belt Conference institution. “I am so excited about working with the returning runners and recruiting some new student-athletes into the program,” remarked Kreutzer. “I hope to implement training workouts to aid the team in being competitive and successful for the upcoming cross country season.” Kreutzer was consistently a top fi ve scorer for the Jaguar cross country program under the direction of Adam Ward. Kreutzer claimed All-Academic honors in 2007 and 2008, while also being named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll after the 2007-08 athletic year. As a member of the Augusta State women’s club track team, Kreutzer is currently the school record holder in the 2K, 3K and 10K Steeplechase. Kreutzer was also a member of Augusta State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for all four of her years at the institution. An extremely well-rounded individual, Kreutzer was a member of many other organizations during her time at Augusta State. She was a member of the Biology Club, the Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society and the Chemistry Club. Kreutzer was also a Student Ambassador Board member and a member of the Iota Pi Chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma. She has also served as a lifeguard and assistant swim coach. She has also been a soccer referee. Through the years, Kreutzer has participated in a plethora of mission trips and been the road race director for a myriad of different causes. In February of 2010, she was the charity road race director for the Glazes of Glory 5K. The event benefi ted the Make-A-Wish foundation. Last summer, she was the road race director for the Grassroots series, which benefi ted the Augusta State cross country teams. Just recently in January of 2011, Kreutzer was the road race director for Trot to Adopt 5K. The road race was set up to benefi t Lifesong for Orphans. Still an avid runner, Kreutzer has completed many road races on her own, including 13 half marathons, two marathons and the Augusta half Ironman.
