We began the year by proudly support- ing Katie Parrish, who led an exciting campaign as a Top 5 for Miss Auburn, and represented the sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta so wonderfully. As campaign season came to a close, pageant season was just starting! Court- ney Hattaway crowned Emily Busby as the new Miss Glomerata. We are so proud of the girls for their accomplish- ments and for representing us so well! Another great part of the spring was the many social events that were made possible by the hard work of our social chair, Morgan Burford. We thank her for many nights to remember, filled with dancing and laughter with wonderful friends. Our sisters had so much fun at socials like the Valentine’s Day blind date party, “My Tie,” and our annual spring formal, Swampwater, which was held at the beautiful Greystone Mansion. Our annual philanthropic event, Wing Jam, was a great success again this year, with a wonderful turnout. The event was held at the Buffalo Connection, where contestants performed at an open-mic talent show. with sisters whom you may or may not have known in school. Great wisdom and respect is shared among women of different generations and seasons of life. We have fun when we come together for our annual Mother-Daughter Christmas Tea and winter get-to-gether, where the collegiate chapter shares with the alumnae their chapter happenings. Some special events held this year include a wine-tasting event for our younger alumnae and a road trip to Montgomery to attend a reception for our sister, Kay E. Ivey ’64, the new Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. We are proud that Kay is representing Al-pha Gam in state politics. Two local alums attended International Conven-tion this past summer in Tampa, FL. Susan Lovett Speakman ’85 and Kimble Manley Eastman ’82 met up with the Gamma Delta collegiate officers at Convention and celebrated numerous recognitions for both chapters. If you ever have the opportunity to attend Convention, I encourage you to go! You’ll get a new view of what it means to be an Alpha Gam. We could not do what we do as a chapter without the involvement and support of our alumnae. This Chatterbox newsletter is produced through the great

efforts of Eliz-abeth Jerni-gan Rodgers ’75 and Anna Claire Stamps Vollers ’01. We raise fi-nancial support through our fall pecan sale and spring plant sale so our chapter can contribute to the Alpha Gamma Delta F o u n d a t i o n each year as a jewel chapter ($1,000 or more donation). If you would like

to support the efforts of our local alumnae chapter, we would appreciate your contributions. Donations made payable to Auburn-Opelika Alumnae may be sent to Alumnae Treasurer, Dorinda Gunter Mill-er ’75, 1401 Blackhawk Drive, Opelika, AL 36801. If you are living in an area with an Alpha Gam alum-nae chapter, I encourage you to become involved and see how rewarding it can be to connect with sisters!

Chelsea Fergason. The Gamma Deltas ended the Spring semester by receiv-ing campus honors. These honors included first place in grades, and first place in Greek Sing, with the theme, “The Brothers of Alpha Gam.” We are thankful to Al-lison Wachs, Dana Woods and Anna English for choreographing our winning routine. Once again, Gamma Delta’s Recruitment was a won-derful success! Allison Wachs, Anna English and Morgan Weant worked tirelessly to bring us our excel-lent New Member class, which we are so proud of. The 55 new baby squirrels were initiated into the chapter in Oc-tober 2010. Katie Simeroth served as “Mama Nut” to the new pledge class, and did a great job in supporting and en-couraging these new sisters all semes-ter long. Through their New Mem-ber Meetings and fun themed swaps, the girls were able to bond and learn more about the sisterhood of Al-pha Gamma Delta. These new member events were all a great success thanks to Katie, and her New Member Assistants. After our new members were initiated, the annual Feast of Roses took place at Moores Mill Country Club. Meg Reaves did a fantastic job in coordinating this event. Meg also coordinated the Homecoming BBQ, which brought alumnae and families together to enjoy one an-other’s company and Auburn Football! During this time, we also enjoyed supporting our very own Abby Stever-son in her campaign as a Top 5 Miss Homecoming! In Alpha Gamma Delta, we get excited about support-ing our sisters, and as we started off our 2011 year, we had plenty to be excited about! The Gamma Delta Chap-ter had three girls in the Top 5 for Miss Auburn. We were thrilled to support Millie Harrison, Whitley Kelley and Megan Murphy in their campaigns for Miss Au-burn, and we are so excited that in February, Millie Harrison was named Miss Auburn 2011-2012! We are extremely thankful for the ongoing encourage-ment and love from our alumnae. We know that our suc-cess would not be possible without your generous sup-port! The Gamma Deltas cannot wait to see what awaits us as we start another exciting year!

amma Delta Chapter at Auburn University brought

home top awards and honors from the Alpha Gamma Delta Interna-tional Convention held in Tampa this past summer. The Auburn chapter received the prestigious Annulet Award, which is awarded to the collegiate chapter with over-all highest excellence in all aspects of fraternity life. The Rose Bowl was presented to the Auburn chapter for maintain-ing the highest fraternity academic average for the large chapter divi-sion during the preceding bien-nium. The collegiate chapter also received top recognition for activi-ty involvement on campus, chapter efficiency, financial management, and international council merit. Honor roll awards were received for scholarship improvement and member development . Both the local collegiate and alumnae chapters of Alpha Gamma Delta were recognized for their sup-port to the Fraternity’s non-profit organization, The Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, which supports diabetes research, provides academic scholarships and leadership training programs, and assists members in critical financial need. Both groups hold fundraising projects during the year to raise money to support the Foundation. A scholarship endowment was recently established through the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation in memory of Alpha Gam alumna Barbara Drummond Thorne ’56 by her family. This scholarship en-dowment, announced at the convention, will annually benefit a member of Gamma Delta chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta in pursuing her academic goals. The Auburn-Opelika Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta was recognized as a 5-star chapter, meeting all of the specified requirements of an alumnae chapter. It also received recognition for an outstanding newsletter, The Chatterbox, which is published once a year and distributed to all local and Gamma Delta alumnae. Joining more than 590 Alpha Gams at Convention – from Nova Scotia to Hawaii – were offi-cers from Auburn’s collegiate chapter: Brianna Bailey ’07, Morgan Burford ’08, Mary Gray DeMetz ’08, Anna English ’07, Allison Wachs ’07, and Morgan Weant ’07. Kimble Man-ley Eastman ’82 attended as an alumna and advisor to the collegiate chapter and Susan Lovett Speakman ’85 attended as a delegate from the local alumnae chapter.

Chris Blackburn Danner ’9. Chris was surprised at a Gamma Delta salad luncheon with a birth-day cake and song to celebrate her 90th birthday. She is a charter member of Gamma Delta Chap-ter and has an extensive squirrel collection, so of course the cake was decorated with a bushy-tailed squirrel. Happy 90th Birthday, Chris!

Betty Ann Chadwick Russell ’54. Betty Ann wrote in to tell us the Alpha Gam world is a small one. She has managed her son’s paper recycling and shredding business for the past 20 years. One of their paper purchasers, Jack Lu-pus of Atlanta, told his daughter went to Auburn and had pledged Alpha Gam. Says Betty Ann, “I was thrilled to tell him how much Al-pha Gam has meant to me for over 50 years…the conventions I have attended, the Honors of Epsilon Pi that I have been awarded, and the lifelong friendships I have en-joyed.”

Suzanne Kelley Rutledge ’67. Suzanne is originally from Cam-den, AL, and was a high school friend of Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey. She had the privilege of attending Kay’s inauguration in Montgomery, and enjoyed seeing many Alpha Gams at the reception in Kay’s honor. Pat Smith Faulkenberry ’71. Pat lives in Orange Beach, AL and works with Re/MAX of Orange

Beach with an office on Perdido Key. She gets together with the MAGNOLIAS (Marvelous Alpha Gams Needing Oth-er Lovely, Intelli-gent, Awesome Sis-ters), usually at least once a year. They met twice during 2009 at Alpha Gam daughters’ wed-dings. The MAGNO-LIAS include Pa-tricia Gayle Seay ’70 (Mu Chapter), Robin Reeve Al-len ’70 (Gamma Gamma Chapter), Brucie Beven-ridge Mancuso ’71 and Anne Harbert Moulton ’72.

Cathy Hobbs Long ’71. Cathy retired from being principal of Au-burn High School in June 2010. The new principal, Dr. Todd Free-man, is the husband of Rachel Edmundson Freeman ’0.

Jennifer L. Ingram ’74. Jenni-fer has been weaving for more than 20 years. She is a musician and an-thropologist, and enjoys studying prehistoric weaving implements as well as prehistoric textiles. She sometimes mixes science and art in her pieces and enjoys creating textiles that are one of a kind. Says Jennifer, “I get inspiration from nature, and I enjoy dyeing fibers using natural dyes. I really love seeing how different colors and textures come together in a proj-ect.” Her handiwork is for sale at www.theweaverscottage.etsy.com.

Cindy Harney Haygood ’75. Cindy and her husband Daniel mourn the loss of their son, Sam-uel Lawton “Sam” Haygood, who died January 14, 2011 at the age of 25. He was a 2008 graduate of Auburn University, a member of FarmHouse Fraternity and the Au-burn Cycling Team. He is survived by his wife of 2 ½ years, Abby Johnson Haygood, his parents and his sister Caitlin, as well as other family members. Sam, a triathlete and marathon runner, waged a 4-year battle with Ewing’s sarcoma and had been a spokesman for the rare form of cancer. You can read more about Sam here. Cindy says she is thankful for the care and concern her family has received from her AGD sisters: Carol Grady Reeves ’71, Brooke Par-rish McWhorter ’88, Michele Stapleton ’75, Susan Payne Dobbs ’75, Caroline Lipscomb Hassanpour ’75, Dorry Ann Hayes Blackburn ’49 and Shir-ley Metz Cundari ’55. Elizabeth Jernigan Rodgers ’75. Elizabeth is working with the Banner Junior Golf Tour. The pur-pose of the tour is to provide af-fordable and accessible two-day junior golf tournaments for play-ers ages 9-16. The championships provide an entryway into tourna-ments for newer competitors and a gateway for seasoned players to elevate their games to the highest levels of junior golf. BJGT found-ers are Will Blackmon, husband of Melanie Martin Blackmon ’97 and Sam Rodgers, Elizabeth’s son. The junior golf tournaments will be held in the Auburn area this summer. For more information, contact Elizabeth at [email protected].

amma Deltas are proud one of our own, former Alabama State Treasurer Kay Ivey ’64 was elected Lieutenant Governor of the State of Alabama in November 2010.

Kay is Alabama’s first female Republican to serve as Lieutenant Gov-ernor. She was sworn in on Jan. 17, 2011. Dorry Ann Hayes Blackburn ’49 - her strong supporter, friend and fellow Gamma Delta - held the Bible. On Jan. 16, she hosted a reception at the State Archives Building in Montgomery, and several Gamma Deltas were in attendance. Kay is a native of Camden and graduated from Auburn in 1967. While at Auburn, she was elected vice president of Auburn’s student body, was on the Homecoming Court, and was involved in many academic and vol-unteer organizations. She has been a high school teacher, a bank officer, and has held positions in state government.

he opening line of our purpose states: To gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me. At Auburn, the chapter has enjoyed a

long legacy of academic excellence. For more than 30 years, Gamma Delta has had the highest cumulative GPA on campus. Our sisters are encouraged to place academics first and to strive towards preparing them-selves for life beyond Auburn through their studies. Semester after semester the Squirrels have been No. 1. During these challenging ecomonic times, securing funds for their college education has become more cru-cial. In 2010, the Thorne family established an endow-ment through the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation to honor the memory and legacy of Barbara Drummond Thorne ’56. Barbara embodied the ideals of Alpha Gamma Delta. She lived out the purpose sharing of herself and her love of our fraternity with her daughters and with all she met. With the establishment of this scholarship, her family has ensured that her legacy will continue. Each year, a member of our chapter will be given the Barbara Drummond Thorne scholarship, a fitting tribute to a woman who spent her life promoting Alpha Gamma Delta. We are truly grateful for the generosity of the Thorne family and their desire to not only honor their mother but to continue to promote the academic excellence for which our chapter is known.

hrough the eyes of a child, going through your moth-er’s jewelry box can be exciting. My memory of Mom and me going through her box was that way. Always

finding beautiful, sparkling treasures, always asking to wear what I found, but never allowed “until you’re older” she would say. Finding tiny teeth in small jars, wondering which ones were mine; a special pearl pin in a small plastic box that always brought to Mom memories of her days at Auburn. Hoping I would wear it one day. Barbara Drummond Thorne ’56 was a lady who loved people and enjoyed talking with them. One of her favorite subjects was Alpha Gamma Delta. It didn’t matter where she was: the grocery store, the pool or church, she stopped to talk. These conversations would often lead to her writing “recs” for many young girls hoping to pledge Alpha Gamma Delta. I saw Mom’s love for them as she would spend many hours gather-ing pictures and information sheets, doing her homework so each young woman would have a chance to wear the red, buff and green. Sending recs to the chairmen was only a small way that Mom’s sweet spirit showed. She was always willing to help

people from every walk of life. Mom was there to pray with them and give encouragement. She also reached out by helping people get an education, and by getting involved in many diverse groups, from 4-H to the Woman’s Philanthropy Board. The purpose of these groups was to help others. She not only supported them financially, but her involvement allowed her to get to know the people in charge and how they were touching others. Some of the special ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta were LaVerne Taylor Flanagan ’46, Chris Blackburn Danner ’9 and Dorry Ann Hayes Blackburn ’49. My sister and I knew these names before we ever enrolled at Auburn because of the many conversations Mom had about them. Like these ladies, Mom had a gener-ous and loving heart.

Now Mother will always be remembered for the love she had for Alpha Gamma Delta through a scholarship given in her memory. This scholarship will continue to help a special Alpha Gamma Delta.

When it was time for me and my sister, Barbara “Babs” Thorne Anderson ’85, to go to Auburn, Mom was so excited to help us prepare our information

sheets and pictures for Alpha Gam. But she also got people to write recs for us for many other sororities. How-ever, on Squeal Day there was only one choice for Babs and me…ALPHA GAMMA DELTA. Running up the hill was extra special with Mom there waiting. We were able to make memories together going to Achievement Days, International Convention and other Alpha Gam activities. None were more special than the surprise of getting to wear the special pearl pin from that little plastic box that I had looked at so many times in her jewelry box.
