Within the pages that follow, you’ll see visible evidence of collective efforts to shape lives and inspire futures here at Briar Cliff University and beyond. Because of your giving hearts, Briar Cliff students have and will continue to enjoy the benefits of a liberal arts education in this Catholic Franciscan Learning Place. Over the past year, we have embarked on an exciting new future at Briar Cliff University. In September, we formally broke ground for a $10.75 million addition to and renovation of Heelan Hall. While construction is going on all around us, another kind of building continues in the hearts and minds of our students and the BCU community. Building a Caring Community – our 2011-12 Franciscan charism – mobilizes us to roll up our sleeves, reach out and dig in to demonstrate caring for others and for creation. Already this fall, we have participated in a week of service activities in the Siouxland area, held a service day for vice presidents, hosted the Annual Senior Citizen’s Day Out on campus and freshmen completed a service day. Much more is planned for the remainder of the year, as we live our Franciscan traditions and values. It has been said that “the door to happiness swings outward.” Nothing could be more fitting to describe the countless ways our employees, students, benefac-tors and friends give so generously of their time, talents and treasures to advance the mission of Briar Cliff University. This President’s Report, and the many acts of generosity listed within, is evidence that the door to happiness really does swing outward. Thank you.

Dear James and Margie Gleason,

I cannot quite put into words how grateful I am for your generous scholarship. Because of your generosity, I am now able to attain quality materials and valuable time to work on my paintings. I am truly honored to be the recipient of the Dorothy Collins Senior Art Scholarship.

To tell you a little about myself, I am currently a senior at Briar Cliff. I have had a passion for the arts for as long as I can remember, and I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to pursue what I love. I am a mixed media painter, working on fairly large scale pieces dealing with issues of the sublime, personal experience, and the investigation of material and form. Aside from my art, I am a resident assistant for Baxter Hall and long and triple jumper for the Briar Cliff track team. After graduating, I plan on attending graduate school to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis on painting, hopefully, leading to a teaching position at a major university.

More than 100 residents of Siouxland nursing homes and care facilities were treated to lunch and entertainment during a special day out at Briar Cliff University on Oct. 13, 2011.

Hosted by BCCares and Campus Ministry programs, Briar Cliff’s Annual Senior Citizens’ Day Out featured an invocation, a luncheon served by Briar Cliff students, faculty and staff and entertainment by the Briar Cliff Choirs.

“We extended our spirit of service to the community, especially to those who are homebound or don't have the freedom to get out much,” said Gil Ridenour, associate campus minister and director of BCCares. “We also wanted senior citizens to know that we care about them and value our time with them.”

The luncheon for senior citizens was held during a week of service, when the Briar Cliff community worked with several Siouxland agencies and service organizations. The service week was part of Briar Cliff’s effort to “Build a Caring Community.”

Briar Cliff University freshmen stepped out of their classrooms and into the community for a service day in September to help clean up after Missouri River flooding this past summer.

Bright and early on Sept. 22, Briar Cliff students boarded busses to various job sites, including the Sioux City Riverfront, Riv-R-Land Estates, South Sioux City’s Scenic Park, Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA and several Siouxland homes. They cleaned playground equipment, power-washed home exteriors and removed debris from fences.

“I did not realize how much damage was done before seeing this,” said Jackie Holmes, a first-year student from Marcus, Iowa. “One or two people could never get this done, but we have power in numbers.” Approximately 250 people participated in the service work.

Power in NumbersThe day of service is part of the new Franciscan Life core course, which emphasizes building a caring community.

“Like Saint Francis, who so graciously served others, we want our students to see how valuable and fulfilling service can be,” said organizer Gil Ridenour, one of nine Franciscan Life instructors. “In light of the Missouri River flooding, our community is in need of people giving their time to help clean up the mess,” said Ridenour. “We felt as a group, that a day of service would be what Francis would have done in his lifetime.”

At Riv-R-Land Estates, over 20 students raked leaves and debris at the community park. Students also power washed and scrubbed home exteriors.

“I have learned that no matter where you are from, it is good to help a community in need,” said first-year student Akeem Holmes, from Omaha, Neb., who worked at the riverfront shoveling sand.

“During the flood, Briar Cliff responded in a very big way, and now we have moved to the next stage, which is dealing with the aftermath,” said Beverly A. Wharton, president, Briar Cliff University.

The flooding was triggered by record snowfall in the Rocky Mountains of Montana and Wyoming, along with near record spring rainfall in central and eastern Montana. Beginning in June, all six major dams along the Missouri River released record amounts of water to prevent overflow which led to flooding of communities along the river.

My name is Katelyn Baas and I’m from Council Bluffs, Iowa. This is my second year attending Briar Cliff University and I’m majoring in nursing. I chose to get my degree at Briar Cliff for many reasons. First, I chose BCU for its excellent nursing program. I was extremely impressed with the fact that it leads the state in clinical hours.

I also chose Briar Cliff because of the people. When my mom and I came to visit the campus, everyone was extremely friendly. It was so inviting. We left with smiles on our faces and warmed spirits.

Another reason is how service and religion are incorporated and encouraged alongside our education. I wanted to thank you for providing this opportunity for me to attend Briar Cliff. I cannot imagine myself anywhere else. It’s the perfect fit for me. I am honored to receive this scholarship and my gratitude cannot be described in words. In an effort to demonstrate caring throughout Siouxland, the entire Briar Cliff University community, including students, staff and faculty volunteered their time at several Siouxland organizations during a week in mid-October. The campus-wide effort was in support of a yearlong theme “Building a Caring Community.”

“We asked every member of the BCU community to do at least one act of service from Oct. 12 through Oct. 19,” said Marilyn Eastman, assistant professor of business and marketing at BCU and faculty advisor for the project. “Through-out the week, we extended a helping hand at the “Be Somebody” Campaign in Sioux City high schools, Beyond the Bell, Boys and Girls Home, the Food Bank of Siouxland, Habitat for Humanity, Mission of the Messiah, The Clare House, among others,” Eastman explained.

BCU’s week of service was cosponsored by Briar Cliff’s Students in Free Enterprise, Society for Human Resource Management, Student Government, Campus Ministry and the Honors Program.
