Option Count Percent

I joined PMI and the MN Chapter last December. The programs offered by MNChapter have not interested me. The meeting and online discussion topics seembest suited for people who are relatively inexperienced in project management. Ihave not found the local meeting topics to be of value so have not taken time toattend them. Although I initially joined for networking opportunities, I have not takenadvantage of the meetings for networking. If most of the members are at thebeginner-to-intermediate stage of their careers in project management, thenetworking and information shared by the MN Chapter may be perfect for them. Formyself, there is not much to be gained and I will likely not renew my membership.

Not able to get enough credits to maintain PMP certification. Employer doesn'treally value it. Not enough opportunities to get PM credits.

1 5.6

I don't see very much support/options to really help me to prepare for the PMPexam.

1 5.6

I don't that that I can gain much out of the membership with the Chapter. 1 5.6

I have left Fargo and moved further west. 1 5.6

I have not attended even a single event due to work related reasons. 1 5.6

Just took the PMP Exam & failed. The test questions or the vague manner in whichthey are asked was a major issue with students during the class time. Are theyvague for some goal to minimize who gets in or should they be looked upon as alearning tool that does not make you interpret between the "two correct" answers. ifound my self spending time on the minor differences of a test question then justasking a straight forward question & we provide the answer. Things like what isneeded to be done before you close out a project? file a financial report or do alessons learned. what kind of question is this? I defaulted to a lesson learnedanswer but.....I assume you have submitted the financials. Are you testingknowledge or the art of word smithing. Never quite understood the thought processof PMI multiple test & i know that i am not alone is this area. Maybe asking twicethe amount od questions or three times would make more sense. Unable to make most of the meetings. 1 5.6

I'm no longer in Project Management 1 5.6

I became a member of PMI as I was hoping to become PMP certified. I didn'tsucceed in doing that so I reconsidering if this is still something I wish to pursue.

1 5.6

I am disappointed that there is an extra charge for practically every activity w/in theorganization. I have over 20 years of Project Management experience, but am notable to qualify for PMI certification, because my experience is more than 3 yearsold.

1 5.6

Better value for PDU's within CoP's 1 5.6

Everytime I attend a meeting it is filled with people looking for work. As someonewho has a job, I feel ambushed by job seekers. As a result, I don't feel like I gainmeaningful network connections.

1 5.6

I have recertified through 2013 and plan to retire before that time. I will no longer be apracticing PM so am winding down my PM commitments outside the workforce.

1 5.6

The cost, and it hasn't been what I expected as far as getting ready for the PMPexam.

1 5.6

Didn't use it much as it was similar to Ulink and alot of the info on it is on the mainPMI or via Ulink. We have similar groups within our company's sharepoints andgroups, which is more central to our business.

1 5.6

The speakers at the dinner events aren't as useful or interesting as I hope. I wouldalso like to see more of the online speaker/events offered so that I can keep up todate with PMI with a busy home and work schedule.

1 5.6

I don't feel I get anything out of my chapter membership. I'm not actively networkingand I haven't been too interested in the chapter dinner topics to want to participate.

Please provide any additional feedback or comments below: (90 Responses)

The chapter dinner meetings are not central to the membership, have become too costly, and don'toffer enough information for experienced project managers. The board has become isolated from themembership and I am beginning to feel that our membership dollars are their travel budget and notused to provide value. When I joined we did much more for the membership and provided highsatisfaction.

Of the handful of seminars that I have attended, half have been worthwhile and half have not (toosimplistic, poor presentation quality). My time is a precious commodity; I cannot afford a 50/50 hitrate. I am switching to onlines to receive PDUs. I maintain my chapter membership because I shouldto stay current with what is happening in the area, but this is the only benefit.

Would be great to see programs or sessions discussing how project management was introduced to abusiness or use of basic project managment and the benefits within a business. I do a lot of coachingand introducing project management and how it can integrate the larger business, not just hard coreprojects and the execution of projects. Would be a great way to connect with other business orimmature business that would like to learn more about project management.

PMI-MN is great in a lot of ways, but they are expensive and getting PDUs is very expensive. I waspreviously a member of the Madison Chapter and their PDU offering was much more reasonable. $1 foreach hour volunteered Is too little for me to continue to volunteer past my current commitments.

Im pretty new to the Chapter and haven't been able to attend any events yet, but I'm looking forward toattending soon.

I was the first recipient of the Anna Alvarez-Holmberg scholarship co-sponsored by MNPMI and ASTD-TCC for which I am grateful and loyal to both chapters. PMI does a wonderful job supporting andnetworking local PM and OD professionals. The leadership has always been stellar and I have grownthrough my relationship with a number of members. Please continue providing local learningopportunities and actionable knowledge to our community. Keep up the good work of electingauthentic, fully-actualized, compassionate leaders for our chapter.

Meeting locations are not convenient for people on the east side of town. Being a contractor, I amunable to attend breakfast meetings. Rotate dinner meetings to St. Paul.

At several chapter dinners I felt like I was being targeted by job seekers, since I work as an employeefor a large corporation. Some oft the dinner event speakers did not really cover the projectmanagement discipline. Several times LIG meetings were cancelled without notice and I found myselfhaving wasted time to arrive early.

I have not used the resources provided by the local chapter. This should not be seen as acondemnation of the chapter or it's services, but a reflection of my busy schedule. Thus, I am not in aposition to provide quality feedback on the chapter.

Big problem that must be addressed: Most of the local meetings are held in Plymouth which is awayfrom the centralized core of the Twin Cities area. Thus, getting to Plymouth is a pain for the majority ofpeople. We need to spread the pain. We currently have other meetings around the airport which worksbecause it is centrally located and most people are familiar where the airport is located. I would alsolike to suggest another centrally located hotel located on highway 94 which connects the core of theTwin Cities. This would be a great location (specifically at the intersection of the cities of Minneapolisand St. Paul) because there are no weird turns, and most people are familiar with this stretch of corehighway.

Execellent community and services

Location of events is key, they need to rotate to all areas of the twin cities and be held at a variety oftimes.

The chapter is so concerned with financial issues within the chapter that they are willing to sacrificethe quality of the services they provide to the chapter membership and especially to the volunteers. In

recent years, I have seen the quality of the offerings decrease while the costs increased ro theofferings just went away. What is more important - BOD participation in Global events or increasedvalue to the membership?generally poor or no response to queries and followup to interest group activities for those who wish tofollow but can not physically be present, consider having as an online event not just apply to thosegeographical accessable.

new member - less than 1 month so I have not taken advantage of much of the tools that are offeredthrough the PMI.

I would like to see more volunteering opportunities that are not focused at the chapter or its members.

Events are all in the Twin Cities. Too far to go.

I have not been keeping up the effort to acquire PDU's, so the next time that the cycle ends, I will nolonger be able to renew my membership. However, I would appreciate an "emeritus" category that didnot require accululation of PDUs... I could use this "label" to allow me to be more active in PMIvolunteer activities, perhaps mentor younger PMI members, take an occasional short-term contract (ofthe right nature), etc.

I asked about volunteer opportunities within the local chapter. No one responded. Therefore, I have notpursued the matter again. Too bad, I would have liked to get involved.

PMI MN events as a PMI REP are never available on the PMI PDU reporting form. 55 pages ofoutdated events are there to sift through and codes provided - if all all - to report events do not workthrough the PMI PDU system. The chapter pushes volunteering constantly but having volunteered, I amcaught in countless email chains, disorganization and dysfunction which is surprising considering Ishould be working amoung Project Manager peers.

PMI-MN is the best!

It seems that most of the events are held on weekdays. I am on a project in which I travel out mondaymorning and back thursday night and have thus been unable to attend.

n/a

I know there is an appeals avenue for the exam, but most will probably assume that this is just oneoutside of the control & let it slide.

To be honest, I'm not as involved in the MN chapter as I'd like to be. I plan to participate in morechapter functions this summer.

I really appreciate the St. Cloud PMI events. Have minimal interest in traveling to MSP.

Electronic communications would be more impactful if they were not so frequent. Too manycommunications can become overload and may get deleted without being read.

It would be good that you promote by email or in your communications how PMI support members tostudy or prepare for the PMP exam, and tips that could help. I have not been able to attend any of thePMI meetings. Thanks!

survey is too long

I find the PMI central (PMBOK, testing)to be somewhat out of touch with what happens on the ground.I find there are a couple of distinct areas where project management practices are different as nightand day; contrast government to nearly anyone else. I find the PMI central dues to be very high relativeto what is provided and the local dues to be a little low for what is offered and overall still high. The MNPMI group is very industrious with meetings, presentations, and education sessions. However, nearlyall have been geographically difficult as MN PMI changed sides of town about the same time I changedcontracts and sides of town. I would like to attend as the meeting topics sound engaging but workingbillable hours doesn't afford distractions. I'm grateful to have the work.

I am not certain of the local chapter's worth. Is it worth it to me to get involved? I was a member of PMI15 years ago in another state; our chapter included PM's from a variety of companies. This chapterseems to be skewed towards the IT PM. That's not me.

We need better topics and interesting events with PDU credits besides monthly chapter eventsgatherings.

wish we could get better speakers...more nationally reknowned. The PMI-MN Chapter is a welcoming group; they encourage and support newcomers. For someonethat was reluctant to attend an event because I didn't know anyone, I have now found that I amvolunteering and on committees and have opportunities to network and share experiences withcolleagues in my field.

The Minnesota Chapter offers a lot to its members. Due to my work, family and school schedules Ihave limited time to take advantage of the many opportunities.

I've been very impressed with the MN chapter. I was a long-time member of the Puget Sound Chapterand they seemed to offer more PDU opportunities; I'd like to see more of that here, in MN. The MNchapter does a better job with the special events and taking care of members. The Jobs section ofyour website is a great plus.

I have no comments or feedback since I just joined this month.

I belong to the Northeast area (Duluth). We are currently an outreach extension to the MN chapter. Iwould like to see this grow into a more formalized extension to the MN chapter. Scottie is doing agreat job but we could use more leadership from this area so he doesn't have to try to lead this byhimself.

I like having the dinner meeting rotate, it is easier to get to the meetings in Plymouth - however I stillmiss the Double Tree St. Louis Park location - it was easier access for many people. Plymouth is aways to go for people on the East and the Hilton location is horrible, 494 has to be the mostcongested spot in the cities during that time of day - can you move this to a better place?

Our membership fee should cover more access to free PM resources like templates, evaluations andlearning materials. It should help us be ahead of project managers that are not members. If themembership does not help push its members ahead of non-members it takes away one of the reasonsfor belonging. The National site provides some materials, however, many of the more valuable ones arefor a fee and the fee after member discount is still high. We can not be something to all people.Meetings should be held centrally and everyone should drive into them. We should not alternatebetween different locations in the city from meeting to meeting. Providing the ability to attend meetingswith a Webex would be helpful for those times you could make the meeting but just can not invest thetime to commute, network and get back. There should be thought provoking topics that groups work onand expand the knowledge base from. These can be used for member meetings as apposed to fillingmeeting space with routine topics at times. It is a great organization. I am suggesting things that willmake it even greater.

The frequency of the chapter meetings is good, however the time they are scheduled is difficult forsome to attend (working mothers for instance). We should be offering one event per month during theday. Do some analysis of the overall PMI membership demographics and compare that to our localchapter attendance demographics - and you'll find the under served populations. Measure it, and comeup with a plan to improve it.

Need recording of sessions and speakers

It would be good to have a moderated forum (email/listserv, etc.) to present questions/ideas andreceive feedback and to share best practices.

Most of my "dissatisfaction" or lack of either is due to the fact that I'm not really taking advantage ofmy membership. The primary reason for that is due to the chapter being located 40 miles away frommy home, which is another 20 miles away from where I work. What may be helpful is video or WebExsessions.

I am not very involved, although I am a member. I will try to do better, as I am in the PMI agile pilotgroup this year/plan to be.

Due to the economy I think there needs to be an additional push to help PMI members to get jobs.Related workshops too -- how to write a PM resume, interviewing skills, PM job updates and trendsetc.

I was not very impressed or fully satisfied with the PMP exam prep course taught through the localchapter last year. There were quite a few unexpected issues that arose that were not handled well, especially by a project management chapter organization.

The reason for my less than satisfactory rating for this survey is due to the experience that I had uponmy first visit. Someone involved in Leadership was not kind/respectful prior to the start of one of thebreakout sessions. The 3 of us waiting for the start of the session were quite surprised at the way thisperson talked to me upon my offer to help. I know that this does not speak for the entire pmi chapter,so I will keep working to gain more understanding of the chapter to help me understand where the realbenefits can be for me.I'm a relatively new member of the MN chapter, and I haven't checked out many of the resourcesavailable. It seems like there's too much out there to digest, and I think I'm waiting until I have a bigchunk of time where I can sit down and sift through it all. Not sure if there's a problem/solutioninvolved...maybe just an observation that all the info is a bit overwhelming at first? I need anorientation/hand-holding, I guess!

Only a member for <1 month and haven't been active yet, so my answers are based on emailsreceived thus far.

The chapter meetings and events are not conveniently located to me anymore. I live in westernsuburbs and work in downtown Mpls.

The big movement of our time, Agile, Test Driven Design, self organizing teams, CMMI... are hotlydebated by professionals around the world, but they seem to be slipping by PMI. I expected to have alot more activity around hot issues.

Would it be possible to have the Symposium on the East side of the cities or the South side. It isdifficult to get around in the Earle Brown Farm between events.

Difficult to make lunch meeting, Difficult to make meeting within week

I travel for my job so I can't attend a lot of local events so I have not participated like I would like to.

It would be nice to see more evening events in the st paul side. It is not always easy to take off workfor lunches or to travel across town for events

I get out of PMI what I put in, which is not enough, but I know I hold the key to this change. The onething that might be nice is to connect individuals who have similar projects, situations, issues, orsimilar experience levels to better connect. a thought.

My work hours as a PM Consultant interfere with my ability to actively participate with the PMIMinnesota Chapter's activities and events. I rely on the web site for information and updates.h

Would like to see the chapter offer more 'Advanced' training sessions for experienced Project,Program, and Portfolio Managers. Also, please keep offering the Professional DevelopmentSymposium - this is a great one day event for education and networking.

The quality of the speakers at dinner meetings has slipped during recent meetings. Also, The title ofthe presenation and actual content have not always been in alignment. Start on time and end on timeshould be the rule, not the exception. We are project managers after all!!

Unfortunately, I have not been involved in PMI as much as I would have liked. This is due to thesignificant workload so many of us in the discipline of project management are seeing. But, I lookforward to engaging more in the coming year and providing leadership and support to PMI MN.

I haven't really gotten involved with the MN Chapter, as I travel frequently for my job. I would like toattend the monthly PMI Meetings.

My ratings (mostly lower ones) are more of reflection of my participation (or non participation) inchapter activities.

The Outreach programs in St. Cloud have been very good. They focus on everyday issues and andtools. I would like to see something on comparing various PM computer tools on PC (and maybeMac??)

I might be too new of a member to complete this accurately. If the chapter offers such services asstated in this survey, that would be awesome! And I look forward to an exciting year.

Costs of participation accumulate quickly--a concern for those without employer support.

Asking for a person"s age shouild not be done in any survey. That is confidential information.

Would be nice if dinner meetings could be held in the south metro, at least some of the time. For

those of us in the southern part of MN, it is difficult to get to Plymouth for the dinner meetings.Need to promote to student populations and be very flexible.

Overall PMI-MN does a good job. If possible I'd like to see the monthly meetings have A-list speakers,CEO's, well known authors on business subjects, leaders in the MN business scene. I realize this willcost more, but what I've found is the speakers at the meetings are great to those in their industry, butfor everyone else, it may not be as powerful. If you have A-list speakers you might be able to chargemore and really get people talking. I would pay pretty much anything if you had a CEO of a large MNcompany or possibly someone at that level speak at a monthly meeting. Thank you.

Great organization.

I have not participated in any MN Chapter events however, it does seem like there is a good variety ofevents that I could participate if/when I want to and I like that.

Registration for PMI events is sometimes confusing. Clicking on Register buttons that bring me to anopen email... Not sure what to say other than "I'd like to attend this event", which should be evidentfrom the fact that I clicked on the button to begin with. Couldn't it just take me to a form? Submittingthe form could then generate an automated response rather than taking someone's time to review myrequest to register and sending me an email (sometimes 2) indicating that I'm all set. This isn't really aproblem but rather just a suggestion. This system is all ironed out for functions requiring a fee; would itbe difficult to extend the system to free events?

I rated most items as neither satisfied nor dissatisfied because I have not taken the time to getinvolved. I would like to increase my involvement in the chapter. Between work and my MBA classes,I'm trying to find the time. Thanks!

it is difficult to provide strong assessments of the chapter offerings because I haven't been as active asI would like to be. I have very much appreciated the PDDs that I have attended.

Would be nice to get some clarity around all the changes with chapters, SIGs, etc.? Not sure whathas been happening there?

Most chapter events don't provide enough real "meat" in terms of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities thatI can take away. Most of the presenters are ameteurs, or are consultants or others with conflicts ofinterest in what they present. I find that the organization of PMI-MN is very bureaucratic and that PMI-MN tries too often to come across as/play at being more than it really is or is capable of. Part ofprofessionalizing PM as a discipline is demonstrating the integrity of only claiming - explicitly orimplicitly - what is truly a capability. The chapter frequently seems to me to be a group of well-meaningpeople "playing" at being a big, well-run, very functional service delivery group, when it is instead abunch of well-meaning volunteers who are trying to deliver "above" what they, and/or the systems ofthe chapter, are capable of delivering for real.

I am still very new to the PMI-MN chapter, and since it has all been virtual so far, I'm not sure exacltyhow to proceed. Maybe have new members linked up with mentors or PMI veterans to help in theprocess.

Outreach events are useful for those of us who live/work away from the Twin Cities.

Project management tools and principals can and do benefit organizations that engage in businessdriven projects as opposed to technology projects. Within marketing, we gather requirements, writecreative briefs (scope document), manage resources to develop pieces and gain approvals, managerisks and issues, and execute (print) pieces. I have seldom, if ever, come across chapterpresentations, sessions, etc. that look at disciplines outside of technology. As a result, I personallyfind it hard to identify with the chapter and often with PMI as a whole.

I have not had a chance to fully participate with the MN chapter. I hope there will be additionalvolunteer opportunities that I can join in the near future. Thank you.

You question about have you served in a leadership role is confusing - what do you mean my aleadership position? Does leading a project w/in chapter count, being chair of a committee count, etc.,or just board postions?

I haven't had a chance yet to experience all of the benefits of MN Twin Cities chapter membership. Ihave only been able to get to one event, but it was excellent and I am looking forward to the meetingthis month.

I actively recruit for new members and encourage other project managers to join. Additional events andopportunities for networking would be welcome.

It’s frustrating being a younger member in a leadership role; a lot of the seasoned people are not willingto work collaboratively with me on anything. I could easily recommend a lot of people in my age rangeto PMI-MN; however, I simply don’t because of the way I’m treated. It’s difficult to get acclimated tothis environment since I have never experienced age discrimination in my career which I began at afairly young age. PMI-MN could really boost their membership on referrals alone if the mentality of themore seasoned members changed.

Thank you very much for hosting PDD each year. It's a great -- and affordable -- event.

What does the MN chapter offer?

Currently what is called a Minnesota Chapter is really a Twin Cities chapter with nearly all events andmeetings (breakfast and dinner only) held in Mpls or St. Paul. I live 2.5 hours north which makesattending any meetings at least a day off work and perhaps an overnight. I have only been able toattend one meeting so far, but will be staying for several months in MPls this Fall and hope to attendmore. The networking and sharing of information is really important to me. Am considering certificationas well. Was NOT impressed with lack of outreach to me as a new member, but don't take itpersonally. Seems like a very popular chapter and has alot to offer to those that work and live in theTwin Cities area. Perhaps there are Duluth members, but I don't know how to find them. thanks.

Good survey!

Overall good institute to be apart of.
