June 2011

Lake George, NY

For those of you joining us on the shores of Lake George for the first time,

welcome! If it’s your 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th time to our event - welcome back!

We’re very excited to have you in town. Time has flown by, and incredibly we’re

celebrating 5 years of our race here in Hague, New York.

Starting the race in 2006, I initially had two goals to achieve. First, I wanted to cre-

ate an event that was both challenging and well run and that showcased the great

things Hague had to offer. I grew up spending my summers here, and I still find it’s

beauty stunning beyond words. Having been fortunate enough to have traveled

to many places around the world, I believe that its one of the most amazing, and

enchanting places on earth. In fact, one of the newest charities we support is the

Lake George Land Conservancy. LGLC is dedicated to preserving large tracts of

land around Lake George so that future generations may continue to experience

what we are fortunate enough to enjoy this weekend.

The second goal was more personal. Ten years ago, both my sister and mother

were diagnosed with cancer. Both were diagnosed within two months of each other.

While thankfully both are now survivors, their immense struggle with the disease

showed me the challenges people with cancer face and inspired me to get involved

and create something in their honor. I learned of The Hope Lodge of Burlington,

which is a “home away from home” for cancer patients receiving treatment at Burl-

ington Vermont’s Fletcher Allen Cancer Center – a wonderful place where patients,

regardless of income level, can rest, eat, and stay overnight for free before traveling

home. Hope Lodge became the first charity our race would come to help support.

The race has become so much greater than the two goals I set for myself 5 years

ago. It’s about everyone who comes out each year to challenge themselves,

celebrate their accomplishments, and beat back the odds.

A triathlon represents a very personal and physical challenge to the participant.

Start with a set of goals, get stronger, learn and set out to beat the challenges. I am

repeatedly amazed by our athletes and volunteers. I see tears of pain and of joy,

hear stories of great personal triumph, kindness, and camaraderie at every race.

Good luck to everyone and we hope you have an amazing time this weekend!

Who you are helpingYour participation in the North Country Triathlon helps raise money and awareness

for our three main charity partners, The Lake George Land Conservancy, The Hope

Lodge of Burlington, and the Hague Volunteer Fire Department. Each year, the

North Country Triathlon contributes a large portion of its proceeds directly to these

organizations to help them continue the great work they do for the community.

For more than 25 years, the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® in Burlington, Vermont has been a lifeline for hundreds of cancer patients and their caregivers and has provided a free “home away from home” for cancer patients.

Located at the entrance to Fletcher Allen Health Care, the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, Lois McClure - Bee Tabakin Building is a state-of-the art residential facility that is available for more than 3,000 cancer patients and caregivers each year who need a place to stay during outpatient treatment. Hope Lodge’s Quality of Life Center houses American Cancer Society programs, as well as cancer prevention, detection and patient outreach staff for Burlington area cancer patients and caregivers.
