ER JOSHUA KRUSEWSKI

Joshua Krusewski was appointed head coach of the Charger men’s soccer team on May 2, 2007 and enters his fi fth season in 2011.

Prior to coming to UNH, Krusewski had been an assistant coach in the State of Connecticut for the previous six years, including a stint as the lead assistant coach for Southern Connecticut State University from 2004-2006. He was an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut from 2001-04.

In 2010, New Haven posted its best mark since the 2003 season and qualifi ed for the program’s fi rst postseason since 2006. The NE-10 Championship tournament appearance also marked the second appearance since 1997. The Chargers tallied a 7-10-1 overall record and a 6-7 conference slate. In it’s fi rst NE-10 tournament, UNH played to a 1-0 loss in overtime to Bentley University.

Two seasons ago, the Chargers posted a 1-17 record and placed 14 student-athletes on the 2009 fall and the 2010 spring Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

In 2008, Krusewski led UNH to a 4-14-0 record in there first season in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Chargers opened the season by going 2-2 in their first four contests, including a 2-1 victory over then-No. 9 and a ‘08 national fi nalist, Dowling College. Two games later the program won its first Northeast-10 Conference contest in a 3-2 victory over St. Anselm. The team then lost fi ve straight as they were rattled by key injuries., including two seniors, Jessey Fernandez and goalkeeper James Hilaire. The ‘08 team fi nished with a 3-10 NE-10 record and three Chargers made the All-NE-10 Teams. James Hilaire and Oren Corridon were Third Team selections, while Steven Gennuso was named to the All-Rookie Team.

In 2007, he led UNH to a 6-10-1 record that belied how competitive the Chargers were in many contests. They held defending national champions and then-No. 7 Dowling College

to a scoreless draw on October 16, and had previously scored a win over then-No. 23 University of Bridgeport, 2-1, on October 2, giving them points against the top two teams in the regular-season standings. UNH narrowly missed the conference playoffs, fi nishing in a tie for fourth but losing out on a berth with a tiebreaking loss.

Krusewski began his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant coach at SCSU. As an undergrad, he was a member of the coaching staff during the school’s Division II national championship seasons in 1998 and 1999.

He graduated with a B.S. in Business Communication in 2001 and then took a position as an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut under head coach Ray Reid. UConn advanced to the NCAA Division I Championships all four seasons that Krusewski was an assistant, capturing one BIG EAST regular season title and one tournament championship. The team posted a 53-27-9 record during that time. In addition to his coaching duties with the team, he also directed the Ray Reid Soccer School, LLC and established and conducted negotiations with equipment vendors.

Krusewski is a former member of the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) referee’s professional list and was a Connecticut Olympic Development coach. He’s also a former head coach at North Haven High School and director of coaching/player development for Northeast United Premier.

Joshua and his wife, Theresa, reside in Newington, Conn. His wife, formerly Theresa Uliano, is the all-time leading scorer for SCSU’s women’s soccer program. The couple has two daughters, Maggie and Kailey (pictured on right), and are expecting their third child in February of 2012.

MICHAEL WNEK

Michael Wnek joined the Chargers’ staff as an assistant coach in the fall of 2007, after graduating from UNH with Master’s degree in marketing in the spring of ‘07. Wnek played defense for the Chargers as a graduate student in 2006, when the team advanced to the East Coast Conference Championship match.

Wnek came to UNH after graduating from Saint Michael’s College, where he played in 48 matches over three seasons from 2002-2004. A graduate of Guilford High School, Wnek was a member of the Connecticut Class LL State Championship team as a junior, helping the team to a 21-1-1 record.

The Guilford, Conn. native obtained his USSF “D” License, and has served as U-10 Boys Head Coach for the Soccer Club of Guilford from 2002-2006. In all he has been coaching on the U-10 to U-14 levels since 2001. Michael also served an internship with the Fairfi eld University women’s soccer coaching staff, and is certifi ed as a USSF referee.

Michael is the son of Mary and Robert Wnek. His father is the Chairman of the Accounting Department at UNH and a professor of Tax and Business Law.

ASSISTANT COACHFIFTH SEASON

TOMMY MATTERA

A three-year member of the Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team, Tommy Mattera joined the University of New Haven coaching staff as a volunteer assistant in 2010.

Also a member of the Connecticut ODP State coaching staff and an assistant coach for the Norwalk U19 and U17 boys teams, Mattera spent four years coaching prior to his arrival at UNH.

Mattera has his USSF National D License as well as his USSF National Youth License.

As a member of the Owls soccer program, Mattera was a member of the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Championship team as well as the 2006 NCAA Division

II Quarterfinal team and the East Region Champions. Mattera scored the game winning goal for the Owls in 2006 when they defeated Dominican College in the NCAA Regional Semifi nal.

Mattera was also a six year stater for the Connecticut ODP team and a U17 team captain.

A 2005 graduate of Norwalk High School, Mattera is currently completing his degree at Southern Connecticut State.

MARINO CROCCO

A four-year NCAA tournament participant at Southern Connecticut State University, Marino Crocco joined the UNH coaching staff in 2011 as a graduate assistant.

Also a foreign language teacher at Fair Haven school in New Haven, Marino graduated from SCSU in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian and Spanish.

Crocco also has additional coaching experience, which he continues today, with the Everson Soccer Academy in Wallingford,

Conn. and with the Guildford U-15 girls premier team, where he serves as head coach.

As a member of the Owls soccer program, Crocco was a member of two Northeast-10 Conference Championship teams (2007, 2008) and par ticipated in the NCAA tournament each of his four seasons.

A 2006 graduate from North Haven High School, Crocco currently resides in North Haven.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACHFIRST SEASON

JEFF LAZZARA

Jeff Lazzara joined the Chargers as a student assistant in 2011. Lazzara, a member of the team since 2008, was previously a defender for UNH.

The North Haven native will assist the coaching staff for the 2011 season. Lazzara played in 52 games during three seasons as a defender. He tallied his fi rst collegiate point

on September 7 at southern Connecticut State University.

Lazzara is currently completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration at UNH.

Heading into the 2011 season, the New Haven men’s soccer program looks to rely heavily on their veteran leadership. The Chargers return 17 student-athletes from last year’s squad that reached the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with a 6-7 league record and 7-10-1 overall mark. With just six newcomers and three freshmen, the Chargers have plen-ty of experience to make some noise in con-ference play this fall. Of the team’s 23-player roster, 17 are upperclassmen including eight returning seniors.

Fifth-year head coach Joshua Krusewski hopes his squad can use last year’s playoff appearance as motivation to return to post-season play in 2011. The ’10 postseason ap-pearance was the Chargers fi rst since 2006 and fi rst since moving into NE10 conference. The team has a tremendous amount of depth and according to Krusewski, there are many interchangeable parts to this year’s squad and several players can contribute in more than one position.

GoalkeepersSeniors Jonathan Creem and J.J. Comeau will once again compete for the top spot between the posts. The battle for the starting keeper position has been an ongoing competition for the previous three seasons, which has seen both Creem and Comeau see signifi cant play-ing time. Last year, Creem made 12 starts with a .782 save percentage and 1.46 goals against average while Comeau started six games with a 4-2 record, .865 save percent-age and 0.77 GAA. Junior Anastasios Petridis will join the two at the position.

DefenseThere will be plenty of experience on the Chargers backline this fall. Senior Anthony Romano, junior Joel Rodriguez and freshman Tim Hines will receive the majority of play-ing time while junior Javier Nunez and junior newcomer Junnior Torres will compete for the fourth spot on the back left. Romano started fi ve games last season and will likely make the transition from forward to the backline this fall. Rodriguez has started 33 games since joining the Chargers as a freshman. His experience will contribute to the guidance of freshman Hines who will play alongside him on the right center of the backline. Tor-res joins the team as a junior from Middlesex Community College, while Nunez appeared in 13 games last year and totaled 312 minutes. Senior Josh Allen and junior Daniel Dragicev-ich look to contribute in the backline as well, while senior Dave Ljungquist and sophomore Edwin Carvajal may also see signifi cant min-utes on defense.

Midfi eldThe Chargers’ midfi eld will act as the core of this year’s squad with fi ve upperclassmen projected to see signifi cant playing time. The fi ve-player centerfi eld will be led by junior Jo-seph D’Antonio who will play many positions this fall, including an attacking midfi elder. D’Antonio started all 18 games a year ago and led the team in shots (30), shots on goal (13) and game winning goals (2). He was also tied for the lead in points (10) and as-sists (2) as a sophomore and may see time in the center, the right side or even at forward this season. Seniors Jean Carlos Rafeal and Steven Gennuso will accommodate the front

As a junior, Rafeal was tied for second on the team with four total points and tied for third with two goals, while Gennuso totaled 778 minutes on the pitch. Expected to start in the defensive midfi eld is junior Austin Cole-man who started 17 games a year ago as a sophomore. Coleman will make the adjust-ment from the backline to midfi eld this sea-son and is expected to make strong contribu-tions. Playing alongside him will be the junior transfer, Firmiano Ribeiro. The Chargers will have plenty of depth in this group with gradu-ate student Clancy Purcell and freshmen Eric Robertson and Jacob Appelbaum also seeing signifi cant minutes. Ljungquist and Carvajal may also be asked to play in the midfi eld and sophomore Gui Dos Santos could possibly see time at the position as well.

ForwardDos Santos will be asked to lead the Char-gers’ offensive attack in 2011 after a stellar freshman campaign. The sophomore forward made seven starts and led the team in goals and points a year ago. Dos Santos appeared in all 18 games and looks to improve upon an impressive career thus far. D’Antonio may also be asked to play forward at times throughout the season.

The ScheduleUNH opens the season on Sunday, Septem-ber 4 with its home opener against non-con-ference foe, N.Y.I.T. at 2:30 p.m. The Char-gers fi rst three games of the season will be played against non-conference opponents as they return to action on Wednesday, Septem-

ber 7 for their fi rst away contest against #4 nationally ranked Dowling College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. The following game features a home game at 1:00 p.m. as New Haven will play host to Saint Thomas Aquinas College.

Other highlights of the season include match-ups against the top teams in the Northeast-10; #6 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce, #16 nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire, #12 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut, Bentley and Le Moyne. On Wednesday, Sep-tember 21 the Chargers host cross-town rival Southern Connecticut for a 4:00 p.m. contest at Kayo Field. The following week, New Haven will host the Falcons of Bentley College. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The Chargers will play a non-conference game against Mol-loy before returning to NE-10 play on Satur-day, October 8 against Franklin Pierce. New Haven will honor their senior class members before their fi nal home game versus South-ern New Hampshire on Sunday, October 23. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. The team will then conclude the regular season with back-to-back away games beginning with Le Moyne on Tuesday, October 25 and ending with Saint Anselm on Friday, October 28.

The Northeast-10 Conference enters its 31st year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II.

The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.

The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of successes – the growth from seven original schools to more than double its size 20 years later – the contention for and winning of national championships – the change in league structure from on-campus administration to a central governing location – the anticipation of, coping with and addition of modern technology - the recognition of student-athlete performances in the classroom where the real competitions are played out – all of them have been built thanks to the hard work and dedication through the years of thousands of people who have, at one time or another, called the Northeast-10 home for their athletics program or their livelihood.

The NE-10 history began with the vision of a few good men and women. It was back in 1979 that a handful of athletics directors realized that the world of college athletics was changing and that they, and their programs, would have to change as well.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s the NCAA began to emphasize the importance of conferences in organizing competition and determining bids to NCAA national tournaments. The NCAA required six teams to be recognized as a conference in order to award championships, and the creation of national tournaments with automatic qualifi ers to league champions became a new goal towards which teams could strive.

The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classifi ed Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfi eld, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselm in 1981 created the Northeast-8. In 1984, Hartford joined the ECAC Division I North Atlantic Conference but was immediately replaced by Merrimack.

The “Northeast-10” name came about when Saint Michael’s and Quinnipiac joined the league in 1987 and the conference remained stable until 1995 when Springfield left for Division III. The league stayed at 10 members as Le Moyne joined the league in 1996 from the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and briefl y expanded to 11 when Pace joined in 1998 from the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC). Quinnipiac elevated to the Division I Northeast Conference (NEC) to again return the foundation of 10 until the last major expansion took place prior to 2001 when fi ve new schools joined the fold. Franklin Pierce, Southern New Hampshire University (formerly New Hampshire College), the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Southern Connecticut State University were joined by the College of Saint Rose.

In 2008, Bryant University departed for Division I and the University of New Haven immediately to replace Bryant in all sports, maintaining a 15 institutions in the conference.

Adelphi University, became the newest member of the conference last year, bringing membership to 16 full-time institutions.

• Franklin Pierce claimed the NE-10 Championship and regular season titles. The Ravens fi nished the NE-10 portion of their schedule undefeated (12-0-1). They made their eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Championship and the 16th overall.

• Franklin Pierce, Southern Connecticut State and Southern New Hampshire each participated in the NCAA Division II Championship.

• Franklin Pierce concluded the season ranked sixth in the NSCAA Division II National Poll. The Ravens spent more than a month ranked number one late in the season.

• New Haven was named a National Soccer

Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Team Academic Award winner.

• Sothern New Hampshire advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season, and ended the year ranked No. 16 nationally.

• Stonehill’s Tyler Hebert was a Capital One Academic All-District 1 selection.

• Franklin Pierce’s Tom Reilly, conference player of the year, was named the Daktronics East Region Player of the Year, and was named a Daktronics First Team All-American. He was also a NSCAA First Team All-American and was named to the Daktronics East Region First Team.

• Franklin Pierce’s Craig Stewart was named

the NSCAA/Mondo East Region Coach of the Year.

• Merrimack’s Robbie Sabadoz was a First Team All-Region selection.

Roberto Taylor, Forward, (9173-74)Inducted 1984

Achieved success that only few soccer players can claim, earning recognition both on the collegiate and professional levels, both regionally and nationally. He transferred to New Haven in 1973 and became an instant contributor to the team even though he did not play soccer during his junior college days. He quickly earned a reputation for being a “jack of all trades” because he played every position on the fi eld with the exception of goalkeeper. In his fi rst year, Taylor helped the team earn an ECAC playoff spot, leading the team in scoring with 33 points. For his effort, he earned All-New England honors, accolades he would also receive as a senior. Taylor made contributions each and every game during his two-year stay, scoring 25 goals in 26 games. He won the respect of his teammates as illustrated by his being named the team captain and most valuable player in 1974. Taylor later received the school’s Athlete of the Year award for his senior-year efforts. After leaving UNH, Taylor played two years of professional soccer, one with the American Soccer League and one with the North American Soccer League. He earned the ASL’s Rookie of the Year award before moving on to the NASL where he marked such legends as Pele.

Joseph Machnik, Coach/A.D. (1969-80)Inducted 1987

For 11 years the names Machnik and Charger Athletics were synonymous. He began his illustrious career as the head coach of the men’s soccer team, where he fi elded some national caliber teams over 10 seasons. In 1970, he coached his Chargers to the NAIA fi nals and to the regionals the next season. UNH then qualifi ed for the prestigious NCAA Regionals in 1973 and ’74, the NCAA Finals in 1976 and the Final Four in 1977. Named New England Intercollegiate Soccer League’s Coach of the Year two times he also served as the hockey coach for three seasons. “Dr. Joe” brought the same intensity and will to succeed to his position as the department’s Director of Athletics. In 1972, he was instrumental in elevating the athletic program by seeking and gaining Charger membership in the prestigious and competitive NCAA. A few years later, in 1975, he also introduced the women’s athletic program and gave the fi nal approval on the proposal which upgraded the football and lacrosse programs from a club to a varsity sport.

John Kowalski, Assistant Coach/Back/Goalkeeper, (1969-72)Inducted 1988

Statistics do not justify the fine career output of Kowalski and his contribution to the soccer program, both as a player and as a coach. A stellar back for Coach Joe Machnik during his four seasons, he contributed heavily to the 19 shutouts posted by the team as he stopped the opposition before the goal. John could also be looked to when a back-up keeper was needed and he fi lled in admirably when called upon. The four-year letterwinner was a three time All-New England selection and was a key part of teams that participated in the University’s fi rst ECAC and NCAA tournaments in soccer. Returning to UNH after graduating, he served as the right-hand man to Machnik for fi ve seasons, during which UNH competed in fi ve NCAA playoffs, and two NCAA Final Four Championships.

Keith Russo, Back, (1980-84)Inducted 1990

Although he didn’t put any points on the scoreboard, Russo played a major role in New Haven’s success by not allowing the opposition to score any goals. As a defensive player, Russo was one of the reasons UNH was so successful in the early 1980s. He supplied the Chargers with outstanding defense and leadership during his career. Russo was a member of the 1981 defense which allowed only 10 goals in 20 games, a record which stood at his induction. During his stay, UNH posted a 56-15-7 record, including a school record 17 wins in 1983. His play earned him a great

deal of recognition, highlighted by All-America honors in both 1982 and 1983. Russo was also named to the All-New England team in three of his four years as a Charger. He played on two NCAA playoff teams during his career, advancing to the Regional Final in both seasons.

Rick Kessel, Goalkeeper, (1975-78)Inducted 1992

Kessel did more than just stop shots for the UNH soccer team. He was a driving force behind the Chargers’ advancement to the 1976 NCAA Championship Game and to the 1977 NCAA Semifi nals. Kessel posted seven shutouts in 1976, two more in the NCAA playoffs, and three in each of his fi nal two seasons. Kessel’s leadership and ability to come up with big plays often while playing injured was a major contributing factor to the team’s success and to the development of its strong following. Kessel helped the Chargers earn four bids to the NCAA tournament and post a 48-13-10 record during his career. He registered 297 saves in four seasons which included a career-high 116 stops in 1976. He owned a career 1.05 goals against average, including three seasons in which he allowed less than one goal per game.

Don Wynschenk, Soccer & Tennis Coach/Admin., (1964-84)Inducted 1993

Wynschenk played an important role during his association with UNH. He contributed to the education process as a teacher, a tennis coach and as Director of Physical Education and Intramural Sports. Wynschenk taught a myriad of subjects during his tenure and served on many faculty committees which helped bridge the gap between the North and Main campuses. His intramural programs encouraged students to come to the North Campus even though they were not directly involved with intercollegiate athletics. Wynschenk acted as a consultant for the design of the North Campus Athletic Complex. He stressed the totality of being a student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of academic success as well as athletic achievement. Wynschenk received the respect and admiration of faculty, staff and students throughout his career.

Dr. Delfi m Pereira, Midfi elder, (1967-68 & 1970-71)Inducted 1995

For four years, Pereira contributed more than goals and assists to the Chargers soccer program. He was a leader, a player who helped his teammates in any way necessary to win games. Pereira was team captain in 1969 and 1970 and was a major force in propelling UNH to its fi rst ever national tournament appearance, the NAIA Final 8. He played every position during his career, including goal keeper. In his sophomore year, an Achilles injury prevented him from running, forcing Pereira to the goal mouth where he won his fi rst game at the position. The next game, Pereira broke his hand while in the goal forcing him out of the lineup, but only for a few games for he returned later that season. He earned All-New England honors as a junior and senior and was named to the New England Intercollegiate All-Star Team in 1970. Pereira fi nished his career with 18 goals and 13 assists which ranked among the top ten at his graduation.

Neville Brown, Forward, (1970-73)Inducted 1996

Brown made a major impact on the Charger soccer team in each of his four seasons. UNH won 44 of 66 games and received four post-season bids during his career. As a freshman, Brown led the squad in scoring with 14 goals and nine assists for 37 points, a total which also ranked among the nation’s scoring leaders. He helped the Chargers to their fi rst-ever post-season tournament as the team fi nished seventh in the 1970 NAIA playoffs. His contributions did not go unnoticed as the forward was placed on the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League’s All-Star team as well

as the the National Soccer Coaches Association All-Region squad. Brown also appeared on the NEISL and NSCA All-Star teams in 1971 and 1973. He ranked among the team’s leading scorers for three more seasons before fi nishing his career with 45 goals and 31 assists, numbers which still place him among the school’s all-time scoring leaders. Brown was named team captain in his senior season. At the time of his induction, Brown held the school record for career assists with 31 and ranked second all-time in both total point with 121 and career goals with 45. Brown graduated Cum Laude in 1974 and received the Silversmith Award for outstanding contribution to UNH.

Carl Babb, Forward, (1974-75)Inducted 1998

Babb was an outstanding contributor to the UNH program after transferring from Bronx Community College, where he earned All-America honors. The forward fi nished his UNH career with 24 points in 29 games, almost a point per game ratio. His best year came in 1975 when he tied for the team lead in scoring with 16 points, netting fi ve goals and collecting six assists. In his senior season, the men’s soccer team posted a 10-4-2 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in school history. He led a 1975 team that set the standard for future UNH teams, as the Chargers went on to qualify for the NCAA Tournament the next three seasons. Babb also was a member of the fi rst track team at New Haven, competing in the 100- and 200-meters and 4x100 meter relay.

Nick Sakiewicz, Goalkeeper, (1979-82)Inducted 1999

Sakiewicz entered the UNH Hall of Fame as one of the most successful goaltenders in school history. He still holds several school records, including most shutouts in a career with 25 during his four seasons. He was an All-New England Collegiate Conference and All-New England selection during his career. During his senior season, Sakiewicz allowed only 17 goals in

19 games and stopped 123 of 140 shots on goal. His best season came during his junior year, in which he allowed only 10 goals in 20 games, and stopped 121 of 131 shots, including 11 shutouts. Following graduation, Sakiewicz played professionally in both France and Portugal. He served one year as the Vice-President of Corporate Sales for Major League Soccer and at induction was the President and General Manager of Major League Soccer’s Tampa Bay Mutiny.

Peter Zimmerman, Forward/Midfi elder (1975-78)Inducted 2005

During the 1970’s, the versatile Peter Zimmerman was an integral part of UNH’s soccer success, ranking among the team’s leading scorers during each of his four seasons. Zimmerman fi nished his career with 24 goals and 18 assists for 66 points. As a freshman, he netted a single-season career high eight goals for 16 points and never looked back. Zimmerman tallied four goals and 12 points as a sophomore and junior, and had two goals and nine points as a senior. During his time in a Charger uniform, the program posted a 51-15-10 overall record, making NCAA playoff appearances in each season. In 1976, Zimmerman helped the team reach the NCAA Division II National Championship match. New Haven moved on to the National Semifi nals in Seattle, Washington by defeating Southern Connecticut State, 1-0 in four overtimes, as he scored the game-winning goal. In 1977, the Chargers again reached the Final Four returning from Miami, Fla. with a third place fi nish. One of three brothers to compete at UNH, Zimmerman played two years with brother Bernard. He set an example as a three-year team captain with his ability to inspire confi dence in his teammates, and his spirit and love of the game were evident each time he took the fi eld. Zimmerman also represented the team in many campus activities with class and character. In 1979, his athletic excellence and scholarship were recognized as he received UNH’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSteven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., became the sixth president of the University of New Haven (UNH) on July 1, 2004. Dr. Kaplan joined a nearly 85-year-old institution dedicated to experiential education. With enrollment of over 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students representing more than 35 states and some 45

countries, UNH has several nationally ranked programs in a number of majors in business, engineering, public safety, and the liberal arts and sciences.

Dr. Kaplan was presented to the community in March 2004 by then Board of Governors Chairman Robert Alvine, who characterized the president-designate as energetic, well-liked and respected, focused and remarkably effective in mobilizing an institution’s resources to achieve target results. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities.

As president, he oversees a faculty of nearly 400, 530 staff, and an annual budget of $84 million.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at

Wise, Virginia, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universitat, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo, an institution with about 11,000 students; and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University, an independent comprehensive institution of fi ve colleges and 3,400 students, which is ranked by U. S. News & World Report as one of the top regional universities in the Midwest.

He completed his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität in Germany and holds the Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German, and English), also from Eberhard-Karls Universitat. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, a number of scholarly essays, a book on Tim O’Brien’s

fi ction with the University of South Carolina Press, and an anthology of international war stories with the University Press of Colorado.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike, and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to over twenty-fi ve countries in twenty-fi ve years, including Tanzania where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. He was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and fi lm form (associate producer of the fi lm), and is the President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the foundation.

His wife grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery during their time in Wise.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and fi nd UNH a new athletics conference that best fi ts the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting

the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was

at that time only the fi fth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top fi ve four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.

As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven.

A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of science in physical education, Chin earned her Master’s of science degree in physical education from UNC-Greensboro.

The mission of the department of intercollegiate athletics is to support the mission of the university and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. The department will provide growth opportunities to achieve in a nationally competitive intercollegiate program that attracts, nurtures and graduates student-athletes who under the guidance of a quality staff, represent the University of New Haven with character and integrity while achieving academic excellence, serving the community and pursuing excellence in their respective sports.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead.

The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Student-athletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confi dence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfi lling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning.

The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to fi eld sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference.

Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Offi ce of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes.

Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS

• The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 seventeen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2008.• Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 32 Regional appearances. Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies.• Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987.• The football program appeared in four NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. That title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship.• Women’s track and fi eld has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger history. Shannon Gagne won fi ve national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place fi nish at the 2011 National Championship meet.• Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation.• Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA fi nals in 1976 and fi nished third in 1977.
