Welcome to the 2011 Education Learning Community Conference!

The Learning Community Conference serves as a wonderful opportunity for

educators to share their professional development, research, and continuous

improvement effort for students, schools, and districts.

The Education Department Faculty and Graduate Students

Welcome You to the Conference!

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Continuing Education Unit Certificates are available for any educators

attending the conference. The CEU Certificates are included in your

conference folder.

If you would like to receive handouts from a particular session and were

unable to do so, please email the presenter.

The Barnes and Noble Bookstore is open from 10:00 am-4:00 pm on

Saturday.

Keynote Speaker Bill Zubke

Through the use of humor, personal anecdotes, and frequent references to works by Chad Foster, John Maxwell, and Sean Covey, Bill takes his audience through his life, sharing the healing benefit of laughter, the need to see failures as stepping stones, not tombstones, the benefit of claiming love and eventually leaving a legacy of a better world. Involving his audience, Bill covers the room with energy and love.

Sometimes all it takes is a different perspective!

Bill was born in Webster, SD - lived and went to school in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota - Graduated from Moorhead State in 19XX -Taught at Fargo North High for 1 year and Watertown Middle and High Schools for 33 years - Retired in 2005 and is now speaking "motivationally" for his encore career. In 1980 he was the SD Pork Cook-off King and placed nationally. In 1990 he was the SD Computer Teacher of the year. In 1997 he was a Christa McAuliffe fellow for SD. In 2000 he was the SD teacher of the year. In 2002 he was inducted into the SD Forensic Coaches Hall of Fame.

on-one adult time over a four month time frame.

the English Language Description: This multi-sensory system introduces

letter-sound relationships, reinforces decoding rules, and

Title: The Effect of Daily Classroom Meetings on

Classroom Community Description: In order for optimal learning to take

place, it is important that children feel a sense of

belonging and ownership in their classroom. In this

study, daily classroom meetings were held in a

junior first grade classroom. The meetings focused

on giving students an opportunity to share about

themselves and learn about each other, as well as

work together to resolve conflicts in the classroom.

Title: Invented Spelling and Phonemic Awareness

Description: Learning to read and write is critical to a

child’s success in school and later in life. The early years

are the most important period for literacy development.

One of the necessary skills for reading and writing

acquisition is phonemic awareness. Research shows that

children who are adept at phonemic awareness in

kindergarten are much more likely to become successful

readers. This research explores how teaching invented

spelling builds phonemic awareness skills.

Title: How Does Daily Free Play Impact Student

Behavior? Description: Play time in childhood has many social,
