Here in the Official Visitors Guide for the region you’ll find everything you need to know about
this beautiful part of Tasmania famed for its cool climate vineyards and Australia’s top public golf course
at Barnbougle Dunes.
Immerse yourself in the city of Launceston, rich with the charm of the Victorian era. Follow the riverside
trail from the seaport precinct to Cataract Gorge, a beautiful inner-city reserve with walking trails, peaceful
gardens and swimming pools.
Visit Woolmers and Brickendon Estates near Longford, two of the eleven Australian convict sites on the
UNESCO World Heritage List.
Explore the Tamar Valley, which runs through the heart of the region, and be sure to sample the renowned
sparkling and pinot noir wines of the Tamar Valley Wine region. Beyond the vines, you can discover lavender
farms, wildlife parks and heritage mining towns like Beaconsfield, Derby and Branxholm.
For those looking for sports and adventure, Launceston, Tamar and the North offers a diverse range of
active experiences in some of the State’s most dramatic landscapes. Try mountain biking at Ben Lomond,
fly fishing on the highland lakes, watch an AFL game at Aurora Stadium, Hawthorn’s home ground, or play
a round of golf at one of our many public golf courses.

With the best collection of intact 19th century
architecture in Australia, Launceston is a city of contrasts, where
modern marinas and sleek restaurants meet graceful Georgian and
Victorian streetscapes.
One of the most serene and interesting ways to experience
Launceston is to walk it. The city centre is compact and easy to
navigate. A 15 minute walk from Launceston’s CBD will find you
exploring the famous Cataract Gorge Reserve – a stunning piece of
natural wilderness right in the heart of the city.
If you wander a little further out of town, you’ll discover the State’s
most awarded wine route, the Tamar Valley Wine Route, is right on
Launceston’s doorstep.
Shopping in Launceston is proudly local, and with a passionate and
growing design community, its unique boutiques, gourmet delis, gift
shops and interior decor stores are young and buzzing.
If your appetite is for sport, catch an A-league soccer or AFL game
at Aurora Stadium. It’s Hawthorn Football Club’s second home. Or
enjoy a few laps and some of the best views of the city and beyond
from Launceston Aquatic centre.
The recently reopened Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at
Royal Park showcases one of Australia’s best collections of fine and
decorative arts. The redevelopment embraces the beauty of one of
Launceston’s most iconic buildings, built in 1891.

Launceston’s undisputed natural masterpiece is the breathtaking Cataract Gorge Reserve, just 15 minutes’ walk from the CBD. A startling contrast to the busy city environment, the Gorge’s rugged dolerite cliffs and native vegetation suggest a location somewhere much wilder.

Tasmania prides itself on its fresh air, fertile pastures, and
rural industries. With its cool climate, good rainfall and environmentally
savvy population, many regional development innovators see the
State becoming the food bowl of the nation.
Flying over Launceston, Tamar and the North, it’s plain to see how
important agriculture is to the local economy, with a patchwork of
paddocks and vineyards, and luscious river valleys extending into the
distance. The region’s beef, fish, seafood, cheese, honey and wines
regularly take out national and international awards. Our produce is
recognised in a variety of ways, such as our cherries being sold to
exclusive markets in Asia.
Many of Launceston’s finest restaurants delight in showcasing the
region’s fresh produce. Some of our best are The Terrace, Stillwater,
Pierre’s, The Black Cow and Mud at Seaport.
So why not reward yourself with a visit to some of the restaurants,
cafes and gourmet delis in the area?

The Tamar River meanders for 58 kilometres through the fertile Tamar Valley, from the boutique-chic city of Launceston to the turquoise sea and diamond sands of Bass Strait. With vineyards, orchards, pastures and forests, the Tamar Valley has something for all interests.
The Tamar So much to see and do.
Launceston, Tamar & the North HOLIDAY GUIDE 2011-12 21
tHe taMaR
At its heart is the acclaimed Tamar Valley Wine Route, Australia’s most awarded wine region, renowned for the quality of its sparkling wines, aromatic whites and pinot noir. Each vineyard and cellar door has its own special charm and character; many are small and family-owned, others state-of-the-art wine rooms.
Other essential stops in the region are dotted both east and west of the Tamar. A Tamar Triple Pass will give you access to the three highlights: the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre, Seahorse World and Platypus House.
On the east Tamar, don’t miss the Pilot Station at Low Head, a classified historic town and popular holiday spot for locals. The rich maritime heritage of the Tamar Valley is evident in the present lighthouse (built in 1888), which gives magnificent views of the Tamar River.
One of the valley’s many highlights is sunset over the Tamar River – enjoy the changing colours while sharing one of the region’s world-class sparkling wines. Connoisseurs say they’re as good as the French!

The Tamar Valley Wine Route
The Tamar Valley Wine Route is the heart of northern Tasmania – home of some of the finest wines in the world. And that is no idle boast. Our awards speak for themselves. But we would prefer our exquisite wines and passionate winemakers to do the talking.
Our unique cool climate location produces elegant wines of exceptional quality. From the Valley, to Pipers River in the north and Relbia in the south, there’s over 32 wineries within driving distance of each other.
Tamar Valley varieties of note are Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Standout wine styles are sparkling wine, Chardonnay and Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
Cellar door tastings are a specialty of the Tamar Valley, because we love sharing our good fortune. Expect to be pampered, surprised and delighted by your visit to the Valley.
For more information visit www.tamarvalleywineroute.com.au

Legerwood Memorial CarvingsLegerwood is home to the amazing avenue of memorial tree carvings, originally planted in 1918 by the families and friends of the tiny community’s fallen soldiers. When the trees were declared a safety risk in 1999, a skilled chainsaw carver, Eddie Freeman, brought the soldiers back to life in sculpture.
Ringarooma, Ralphs Falls & Cash’s GorgeFurther east, surrounded by rolling farmland, is Ringarooma. Continuing through Mt. Victoria Forest Reserve, the landscape transforms to rainforest, with glimpses of the Ringarooma Valley.
Stop at the Ralphs Falls picnic area and take a 20 minute walk through a wonderland of moss, ferns and Myrtle forest to Norm’s Lookout and the face of Ralph’s Falls. At over 90 metres, Ralphs Falls is Tasmania’s highest single drop waterfall.
Cash’s Gorge is a beautiful (and easy) 40 minute walk through rainforest, tea tree, sphagnum moss and rugged terrain returning to the car park.
At Branxholm, stretch your legs along part of the Briseis WaterRaceWalkingTrack. The 48km race from Ringarooma to Derby is an amazing feat of engineering, touted at the time to be the largest project of its kind ever undertaken in Australia.
In the early 1900s Derby was the thriving home of the massive Briseis Tin Mine, employing hundreds of men and producing millions of pounds of tin.
Take time to explore The Tin Dragon Interpretation Centre & Café, a state-of-the-art attraction where you’ll experience the epic story of the Tin Rush and the 1929 floods. The Derby Schoolhouse Museum gives a glimpse into the bustling days when the mine was one of the richest in the country.
In October Derby comes alive to the sound of mirth and mayhem with the infamous Derby River Derby. Competitors take to the river in all manner of weird, wonderful and creative craft to try their hand at conquering the river.
South Mount Cameron is where you’ll find the Blue Lake. A legacy of mining days past, the sunlight refracting on the minerals in the floor of the lake turns the water a vivid aqua blue.
In the far North East corner, call in to Gladstone for supplies, accommodation and park camping permits en route to Mt. WilliamNational Park. Long stretches of white sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters, coloured granite boulders and coastal heath and woodland provide a diverse habitat for a great variety of wildlife and birdlife. You may even catch sight of a passing pod of whales or dolphins.
The green valley of Pyengana provides the rich creamy milk for Pyengana’s famous cloth bound cheddar cheeses. Grab a taste on the way to the magnificently St. Columba Fall; at a height over 90 metres this cascading waterfall is one of Tasmania’s highest and finest. Take the 20 minute return walk through cool and shady rainforest to the base of the falls.
Top (L-R): Legerwood carvings; Blue Lake; (middle) Ralph Falls walking track; (bottom) Hobiecats on Bridport beach.

The Great Western Tiers Enjoy the scenery.
Nestled between Launceston, Devonport and Cradle Mountain is the stunning Great Western Tiers region. Discover treasures such as arts and crafts, home grown gourmet food and diverse natural wilderness.
Launceston, Tamar & the North HOLIDAY GUIDE 2011-12 43
GReat WesteRn tIeRs
As you travel west out of Launceston, the region takes in the historic pastoral plains of the central north, dramatic Cradle Mountain to the west and the rugged highland lakes to the south. This magnificent horizon of mountains, snow-capped in winter, forms the northern edge of the World Heritage Central Plateau region.
In the shadow of the Great Western Tiers, from the fringes of Launceston city to the pristine wilderness of Mole Creek, travellers can embark on an enthralling journey of discovery spanning centuries of history and a myriad of enchanting experiences.
Many travellers (and locals) find the rugged Great Western Tiers to be a magical and spiritual place. The Aboriginal people have always known the Tiers as Kooparoona Niara, meaning Mountains of the Spirits, an area which was the meeting place of three Aboriginal nations more than 10,000 years ago.
The European settlers who came in the 1800s brought their own heritage to this land, and the enduring English landscape is a surprise and delight.
In the Great Western Tiers you will experience a true microcosm of the island’s history and heritage, its wild scenery and wildlife, it’s tumbling waterfalls, lush rainforest and spellbinding caves.

Mobile Phone CoverageOutside the cities, regional Tasmania has variable coverage on some mobile networks. Check with your service provider for details if you plan on using your mobile phone here.
Our SeasonsTasmania enjoys four distinct seasons, each bringing with it a different holiday experience. The weather can vary on any given day so it is best to wear layers and ensure you have a warm jacket in your bag.
If visiting in our warmer months, due to our temperatures being wonderfully moderate and the humidity relatively low, many visitors don’t realise the strength of the sun’s rays. Be sure to use SPF 30+ sunscreen and always wear a hat.
SEASON AVERAGE TEMPERATURE (°C)
Summer (Dec – Feb) 12 min / 24 max
Autumn (Mar – May) 8 min / 19 max
