Nature has a way of inspiring man. The shape of a bird wing inspired the modern airplane wing. The sound of a summer thunderstorm inspired Vivaldi when he was composing the Four Seasons. From Thoreau’s Walden to Van Gogh’s Starry Night, nature strikes something deep inside causing us to act in imaginative and innovative ways.

Nature is our muse. Being a part of nature activates areas of the human brain that cause us to be aware of our surroundings. This, in turn, creates an awareness of details and engages our senses. It is no wonder that so many artists have taken their cues from what they experience from their time in nature. You can experience this phenomenon yourself. The Chattahoochee Nature Center is hosting artwork from seven artists that have been inspired by nature. Nature in Art: Art in Nature is an exhibition of abstract, nature inspired art, located throughout the Nature Center grounds and ranges from the profound to the outrageous.

CNC Rehabilitates Endangered Wildlife

Welcome Our New Board Member!Mark C. de St. Aubin is a partner in the Construction Section of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP. Focusing primarily on resolving both national and international

private project disputes through arbitration, mediation and the courts, Mr. de St. Aubin has also represented his clients in matters involving state and federal government agencies. Mark is a renown lecturer on Green Building project risks and trends and is active in the Atlanta community, having been selected as a member of the Buckhead Business Association’s Leadership Development Program and Outstanding Atlanta. He and his wife Sibyl have two children, Camille and Edward.

Mark C. de St. Aubin

Most visitors to CNC are aware that the Wildlife Department staff is licensed to rehabilitate injured reptiles and raptors. Over the years, we have taken in numerous animals needing our care that are listed by the state and/or Federal governments as threatened or endangered.

This March we received an adult Bald Eagle. She had symptoms of being poisoned and had been hit by a car. Once stable, she was transferred to CNC for conditioning because the rehabilitator who had her did not have adequate caging to evaluate her flying abilities. It took several months of care, with the eagle slowly moving to larger and larger cages before she finally graduated to our 125’ flight cage. After several weeks in the enclosure, she was able to maneuver turns, avoid obstacles and fly from one end to the other non-stop. In June, Wildlife Director Kathryn Dudeck and Wildlife Volunteer Stacy Zarpentine drove her back down to south Georgia to meet up with Jim Ozier, a biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. They banded the eagle with a unique identification code in case she is ever captured again and released her back into her habitat.

Our state reptile, the gopher tortoise, is indigenous only to the lower half of the state. These colony-dwelling reptiles live in burrows they excavate in sandy soils. Occasionally, people find a tortoise and bring it home with them, eventually releasing it in their yard. We have received gopher tortoises from Smyrna, Vinings, Roswell, and most recently, Chamblee. Many of these tortoises suffer from severe emaciation and parasites, since much of their natural diet is longleaf pine needles and prickly pear cactus, neither of which thrives in this part of the state. Additionally, these tortoises are often kept on a hard surface, resulting in foot deformities and permanent nail loss. Due to regulations that prohibit the release of gopher tortoises that have been kept illegally, the majority of tortoises that CNC receives for rehabilitation are transferred to similar facilities that can use them for environmental education programming.

Last year, four days after fledging from its nest on a downtown Atlanta high rise, a Peregrine Falcon was brought to CNC for treatment. She was seen huddled by an air conditioning unit for a day and half, and upon examination, we discovered a severe trichomoniasis infection of the respiratory system. This illness is nearly fatal if left untreated. Luckily, the Wildlife Department had the necessary medication on hand and began treatment immediately. After two weeks of care, the young falcon was released back home, able to hunt her preferred diet of pigeons and ducks.

Wildlife rehabilitation is not funded by any government agency and it is against licensing regulations to charge for rehabilitation services. It is only through the support and generosity of caring and concerned individuals that CNC, and all licensed wildlife rehabilitators, can continue to assist animals in need. If you

would like to make a donation to the rehabilitation efforts of CNC, please consider becoming a member or making a secure online donation at our website.

Our Gift to the Community:Free Admission to CNC!

Bats are one of the most misunderstood creatures that we come in contact with. They have a terrible and undeserved reputation. Somewhere in history, we labeled all bats as blood suckers. We decided that all bats are born with rabies. We fear that bats lurk in caves waiting to bring us harm. Bats have no intention of harming humans. They play a vital and beneficial role in many ecosystems around the world. All eleven bat species in Georgia are insectivores, eating half their weight in mosquitoes, moths and other insects each night. This important role helps to control insects that are harmful to crops and spread disease. In other parts of the world, bats are vital for forest propagation and renewal. Fruit eating bats disperse tree seeds which replace and extend forested areas. Nectar eating bats are important pollinators, assisting plants with reproduction. There are even bats that specialize in eating fish and frogs. Bats range from the tiny bumble bee bat that is smaller than a woman’s thumb to the large flying foxes that have a wingspan of up to 6 feet. Some bats live as long at 40 years and spend more than half their lives just grooming their fur. If you have an opportunity to look at a bat closely, you will find that they are charismatic mammals worthy of our protection and respect.

We have just begun to realize how important these animals are and even as we recognize their role in our world, we are losing them. In Georgia alone, two of the eleven bat species are threatened or endangered. To bring attention to bats locally and around the world, we are opening a new permanent exhibit on the grounds of the Chattahoochee Nature Center devoted to bats! This exhibit will feature a ten foot tall artificial tree depicting bats found around the world and in our own backyards. Visitors are encouraged to match bats to their home country, to discover the varied food choices of these bats and to compare extremes in the bat world.

This exhibit is made possible through a generous grant from the Lindsley Family in memory of their mother Lee Bibb Lindsley. Lee Bibb Lindsley was a teacher in the Cobb County School system for nearly 3 decades. Always able to bring the best out of people, Lee Bibb was tough, quick to laugh and quite curious. Her ability to tell a story and get people excited about new topics were among her most endearing traits, defining her life inside the classroom and out. This enthusiasm for sharing knowledge was never more apparent than in her last years of teaching when she shifted from second grade into Target, Cobb County’s gifted and talented program. As a Target teacher, Lee Bibb and her students explored a wide variety of topics, from the physics of bridges to the culture of Pompeii to the much misunderstood world of bats. As a self confessed “princess,” bats

in particular seemed like a strange topic of focus for Lee Bibb. However, their diversity, tremendous ecological importance and comparatively poor reputation endeared these flying mammals to her, leading her to become among their staunchest defenders.

Lee Bibb is remembered fondly by her family for talking over many a film showing subterranean bat attacks, noting “That is a myth! They are just as scared of you as you are of them!” Lee Bibb’s willingness to allow her curiosity to transform an object of fear into one of fascination and kinship well represent her legacy as an educator, and it is for these reasons that the Lindsley family have chosen to continue her work through partnership with the Chattahoochee Nature Center. CNC was among Lee Bibb’s favorite sites as a parent and an educator, and the Lindsley family is honored to be able to further her legacy in a place she loved while promoting a cause that she held dear.

Help us celebrate the opening of this new exhibit by joining us on October 1 for the opening dedication. We will celebrate with music, live bat shows, bat stories and crafts from 11am-3pm. See Pg. 6 for more information!

CNC Rehabilitates Endangered Wildlife

Welcome Our New Board Member!Mark C. de St. Aubin is a partner in the Construction Section of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP. Focusing primarily on resolving both national and international

Curated by local artist George Long, pieces were selected because of their connection to a natural theme or event. “Nature in Art: Art in Nature is an ongoing series of art installations that feature a visual dialogue between artist and nature,” said Long.

The current artwork collection includes the whimsical, such as Long’s own piece entitled Two Headed Ass (pictured above), and the striking I Thirst, createdbyartistDebraFritts, comprisedofacollectionofvesselsnestlednearKingfisherPond. Fritts created the pieces as a reminder of the preciousness of water resources and the importance of protecting our natural resources. These pieces are the beginning of an ongoing exhibit of artwork on the CNC grounds that will feature new artwork approximately every six months. Please come out and enjoy this new exhibit.
