Maximizing Your Opportunities!

• Why should you attend the On-campus Job Fair? ⇒ Job opportunities ⇒ Information on career trends in your field ⇒ Employer research and information ⇒ Networking ⇒ Practice speaking about your skills, abilities and related education

On Fair Day….

• Bring an updated resume and consider developing a cover letter specifically

tailored to employers that interest you. Have your resume and cover letter critiqued by a Career Services Advisors prior to the On-campus Job Fair. This will ensure that you are handing out quality résumés. Employers expect to see resumes that clearly outline your key qualifications, educational background and employment/clinical/volunteer history.

• Make a good first impression! You should be dressed in professional attire—

similar to the way you would dress going to a job interview. Practice etiquette: don’t drink coffee or smoke right before speaking to an employer.

• Do your homework! Research the attending employers by utilizing the

Employer Guidebook. Have something relevant and interesting to say when you speak to them. Take a walk around the exhibits before making verbal contact. This will assist you in mentally preparing to speak to employers. Remain focused and enthusiastic.

• Give yourself plenty of time to visit the employers that interest you. • Conduct your visits on your own rather than walking around with friends.

Approaching employers on your own looks professional and confident, and maximizes your chances of networking effectively.

• Be patient and courteous. Offer your hand for a (firm!) handshake, make eye

contact, smile, and be sure to get the contact’s business card for follow-up. • Be considerate of the fact that others are waiting to talk to the employers and

they want to meet as many people as possible. Be interesting, informed and brief. Prepare an interesting “commercial” about yourself. This will enable you to move swiftly through the Fair, networking with as many employers as possible.

• Be yourself, be friendly, and have a good time! Talking about your abilities,

skills and education can be uplifting and exciting.

They are seeking assistance on everything from restructuring their debt, investment strategies and retirement planning to advice on business succession, trusts and estates. They also want unbiased advice from someone who is not just trying to sell them a product. The primary driver behind this increase in demand is the growing number of Baby Boomers who will be reaching retirement age in the next 10 to 15 years. Fueled by this shift, it is estimated that the market for financial professionals – advisors and planners – will grow 37 per cent between now and 2016*. With numbers like these, it is clear that there is ample opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in financial services and for those looking to work as an associate advisor with an established advisor. Before making a decision it is important to research the many different companies offering opportunities. For example, do you own your book of business? Can you take your clients with you if move to a different company? Are there minimum sales quotas? What are the monthly expenses? What type of training and admin support is offered? It is important to do your research before making a decision. Many baby boomers are considering semi-retirement and are looking for the right person to join their team. A big part of my role is to match established advisors with new advisors. Please contact me for a discussion about the opportunities and options that exist in this exciting field.
