With an annual growth rate of 8.7%, global aquaculture shows a much higher increase compared to other sectors of animal foodstuffproduction. The growth of crustaceans market shares displays rates which are even two times higher. In 2006 the aquacultureproduction of crustaceans added up to 4.5 mio. tons, accounting for 9% of total volume and 23% of total value of worldwideaquaculture production. According to FAO, this accounts for 42% of worldwide production of crustaceans (incl. fisheries) and 70% oftotal production of Penaeid shrimps. Per capita supply from aquaculture increased from 0.7kg in 1970 to 7.8kg in 2006, which is anaverage annual growth rate of 6.9%. It is set to overtake capture fisheries as a source of seafood.(See: FAO The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2008; s. ftp://ftp.fao.org/docrep/fao/011/i0250e/i0250e.pdf)

All EU markets reported strong trade in the first half of 2010, with imports increasing in all main markets. The economic crisis seemsto be declining, and all indicators show an improved shrimp trade, both for supermarkets and restaurant sales. Spain continues to bethe main importer of shrimp in the EU. Despite the economic crisis in 2009 imports were strong and continued to increase during thefirst half of 2010: Spain (+10%), UK (+5%), and Germany (+17%) (see: http://www.globefish.org/shrimp-november-2010.html).

The significant growth of aquaculture farming in tropical producer countries of SE-Asia and Central America implies serious impact tomangrove forests due to extensive deforestations. Mangrove forests are among the most productive ecosystems of the world, theyprovide protection against erosion and flooding of coastal areas and they are an important habitat for an uncountable number ofendangered plant and animal species. With an increasing intensity of shrimp production, more and more farmers apply chemicalsand antibiotics, which often cause unwanted and harmful residues in the final product reaching the consumer.

With an annual output of 14 tons the proposed production facility could cover only a very small market share. The unrivalledfreshness and pure quality of the herewith created product legitimates the marketing of the shrimps as a top-quality product.

In Germany the achievable market volume of this product is predicted to be around 1.000 t/a.

A future increase in demand of this top-quality product especially on the part of consumers concerned about ecological impacts ofintensive shrimp farming and harmful chemical residues, which so far surrendered consumption of tropical shrimps, is difficult topredict and quantify, but most likely to take place.

The Marella Shrimps GmbH & Co. KG provides exclusive support to your marketing and distribution and the brand “Marella Shrimps”is already well established in specialized trade and gastronomy. This circumstance will ease your marketing and enables you toimplement a direct yard sale.

Why shrimpsShrimps are a very popular product among European customers. They are perfectly suitable for the cultivation in recirculationsystems without suffering a loss of quality compared to a natural product. After killing the harvested shrimps in icy water, no furtherprocessing is required. After wrapping them up, they can be sent directly to the retailer or the customer and reach the finalconsumer within a day.Rejected heatIn the presence of rejected heat (e.g. from a biogas plant or a power plant), this waste heat can help minimizing the investmentcosts by ca. 12% and by up to 20% of the operational costs, given that the thermal energy isprovided free of charge. If waste heat from a biogas plant is used, all plant components areharmonized in a way that the required quantity of thermal energy remains constantthroughout the year.SponsorshipIt is viable to produce „Marella Shrimps“economically efficient and sustainable withoutinvolving any kind of sponsorship. Nevertheless, sponsorship can improve the economic efficiency by up to 25%. Sponsorships in thefield of aquaculture can be realized by different funds or programs of the chamber of agriculture and/or fisheries. If the productionis intended to be operated as commercial facility, especially regional possibilities for sponsorships should be checked. In this respectwe would be happy to support your project in the context of a blueprint planning.Agriculture or industryThe 14-tons facilities are synchronized with the typical conditions provided by an agricultural family enterprise. Such a 14-tonsfacility can be operated by approximately one person’s man power (excluding resources for production related operations likeharvest, stocking or marketing). Additionally we design facilities that are intended to be operated as commercial, industrialenterprises that produce higher annual tonnages.

Filtration unitsThe re-circulated water is treated in three separated steps. Step one consists of a fluidized bed reactor located in thecultivation tank. The second step is a protein skimmer and the third step consists of a constructed wetland for thereduction of Nitrogen, for disinfection and for the enrichment of the treated water with important minerals.Water supplyFresh- or drinking water is required for the general water supply. To minimize the operational costs, the suitability of localgroundwater needs to be tested in the process of preliminary planning.Waste waterThe water exchange rate of the facility is about 1.5% per day. The waste water is separated in three different categories:

Waste water 1: Waste water from the protein skimmer and the drum filter -> shrimp slurry as grassland fertilizer

Waste water 2: Waste water from the biological water treatment -> for drying

Waste water 3: Waste water from tank flushing and other occasional cleanings -> irrigation water

Concept description

Gangway between the tanksHigh percentage of re-used waterminimizes the freshwaterdemand.

Systematic waste waterseparation concept with threedifferent waste water categoriesfurther reduces the amount ofwaste water.

Independent from naturalsaltwater resources.

The characteristics of saltwatercultivation lower the risk ofmicrobial contaminationsignificantly. In this way noadditional measures fordesinfection are required.

Building groundThe production facility can be operated as privileged facility within ear shot distance of farms or as a hall in industrial areas. Per 14tons of annual production the following areas are required:

Hall area: 1.050 m²

Side rooms: 188 m²

Other open areas: 250 m²Location requirementsThe facility should be located in the boundary area of bigger cities or in rural areas. Our concept facility is operated with artificialsaltwater, so that an adjacent source of natural saltwater is not required. This further lowers the risk of viral or bacterialcontaminations.Requirements for the operatorThe operator will receive a theoretical and practical training and supervision at his newly constructed facility by the competentexperts of Marella GmbH & Co. KG before the production process is initiated. The responsible person needs to be reliable andinterested in handling living animals. To reach the projected yield as fast as possible and to ensure highest production security, theoperator will be supported by our specialized biologists and engineers during the initial years of production.

In contrast to previous costsestimations, this case includes anown heating system, solar energyplant and a controlled aircirculation system.

The shrimps can be produced byusing 100% renewable energysources.

The heat demand isapproximately 400.000 kWh.

The operational costs increase byabout 25.000 €/a.

The adjusted investment costsincrease by about 5-15%.
