diana consolmagnohead coach • first season

Director of Athletics Pa-tricia H. Meiser named Diana Consolmagno the seventh coach in the 33-year history of the University of Hartford softball program in June of 2010. Consolmagno makes her debut as a Division I col-legiate head coach after spending four seasons as an assistant softball coach at Rutgers University where she was a member of Jay Nel-son’s coaching staff.

“We are pleased to have Diana join the Hartford Hawks fam-ily,” stated Meiser. “Her demonstrated leadership will be an inspiration to our student athletes. Diana’s recruiting experience at Rutgers will allow her to hit the ground running during the crucial summer recruiting season. She will bring with her an in-tense level of energy and enthusiasm that we hope our student athletes will mirror. We look forward to seeing Diana’s success on the field.”

“I would first like to thank Pat Meiser and the Hartford staff for this wonderful opportunity,” exclaimed Consolmagno. “I would

also like to thank Rutgers for providing me with the experience and tools I need to coach at the top level.”

In Consolmagno’s four seasons at Rutgers, she was instrumen-tal in significantly improving the Scarlet Knights’ win percent-age. During her tenure, she helped the Scarlet Knights post an overall record of 90-130 and led the team to its first Big East Conference Tournament appearance in 2010. A former college shortstop, third baseman and outfielder, she assisted with the Scarlet Knights’ outfielders and also served as the squad’s hit-ting coach, base path coach and the conditioning coach. In ad-dition, Consolmagno provided support as the Scarlet Knights’ fundraising coordinator and film technician while overseeing recruiting operations and camps/clinics.

“Diana has all of the qualities it takes to be a highly successful head coach,” Nelson stated. “She not only coaches the athletes but mentors them in both softball and life skills. There is no doubt that she will foster an atmosphere of success both on the field and in the classroom. There is no doubt that the University of Hartford has found a gem to direct the success of its softball program.”

Consolmagno arrived at Rutgers by way of the College of Stat-en Island, where she was a graduate assist from 2004-06. Con-solmagno served as the hitting, outfield, and strength and con-ditioning coach throughout her two seasons with the Dolphins.

During her tenure, Staten Island reached two CUNY champion-ships and qualified for a pair of NCAA Division III Tournaments.

Consolmagno enjoyed a standout collegiate career as a four-year captain at the University of Wisconsin and a member of several successful Badger teams. She took Wisconsin to two-straight NCAA Tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002 while helping the team to its best finish in the Big Ten Conference. Consolmagno also received numerous awards and honors dur-ing her collegiate career. She earned the Badger Pride Award and the Coaches Award, and was deemed the Most Inspirational Player as well as the Freshman of the Year.

Consolmagno also adds a wealth of experience working with various camps, clinics and travel organizations to her coaching resume. Consolmagno was a hitting, fielding, and strength and conditioning instructor at Jim Agnello’s Baseball Academy and Zoned Academy where she worked with players on their hitting skills and organized group clinics. She has also coached teams in the New York Panthers Travel Softball Organization for more than six years, and served as an instructor and speaker in Mi-chele Smith’s Rise Ball Camps and NJSAA Coaches Clinics.

“I am super excited for Diana and the University of Hartford,” commented Smith. “She is going to do a great job. Diana is a quality person and coach, and I know she is going to make a big difference.”

In addition to her collegiate playing career, Consol-magno was a four-year member of the NY/NJ Beach Girls Gold Travel Organization where she was a Gold Na-tionals participant. She also played in the University of Ha-waii Invitational Softball Tournament where she was named to the All-Tournament Team.

“I am very excited to be a part of the Hartford family,” Con-solmagno continued. “My first goal will be to instill Hawk pride into our program. I will focus on creating a winning tradition by encouraging a positive atmostphere where Hartford softball players will have the ability to excel on and off of the field.”

Consolmagno received her Bachelor of Science degree in human ecology-child development and family studies from the Univer-sity of Wisconsin in 2004. In August of 2006, she earned her master’s degree in special education from the College of Staten Island.

Consolmagno has three younger siblings, a sister, Maria and two brothers, Michael and Francis. Michael played baseball at the University of South Florida while Francis was a member of the football team at the University of Delaware.

assistant coach • first seasonsarah kalka

University of Hart-ford softball coach Di-ana Consolmagno has announced the hiring of Sarah Kalka as a full-time assistant coach. Kalka is a graduate of Rutgers University where she enjoyed a standout collegiate ca-

reer as a four-year member of the Scarlet Knights’ softball team. A shortstop, Kalka took home Big East First Team honors in 2007 and was also named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Northeast Region Second Team and to the ECAC Division I All-Star Team that year. Kalka captained the Scarlet Knights in 2008 and 2009 and graduated as the program’s all-time leader in home runs, slugging 21 bombs during her four-year career.

In the classroom, Kalka landed a spot on the Big East All-Academic Team during all four seasons at Rutgers. A 2009 graduate, Kalka was a double major, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in jour-nalism and psychology. Kalka arrived at Hartford by way of County Col-lege of Morris where she was hired as the squad’s assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach. During her tenure at County College of Morris, Kalka helped pilot the Titans to a program-best 40-win season in 2010 while leading the team to the Region XIX finals.

In addition, Kalka has experience with Zoned Sports Academy as a hitting and fielding instructor and also worked the Rutgers Softball Camps from 2007-09.

assistant coach • first seasonchrisTina Yard

Christina Yard enters her first season with the University of Hartford softball team as an as-sistant coach. She joins the Hawks for the 2011 season after a four year playing career at Rut-gers University. At Hart-ford, Yard will primarily work with the Hawks’

pitching staff.

A 2009 graduate of Rutgers, Yard was a standout pitcher for the Scarlet Knights. As a sophomore in 2007, the hurler made a team-high 20 starts, while leading the team with 10 wins and 75 strikeouts. In addition, Yard is the program’s leader in saves in a single season and ranks second all-time with five career saves.

Prior to Hartford, Yard spent one season as the graduate assistant softball coach at the University of New Haven where she helped lead the squad to an impressive 42-8 overall record with a 26-2 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference. In addition, she has honed her coaching skills at several softball camps, working the Rutger Softball Camp during her collegiate career while serving as a counselor and instructor at the Hillsborough High School Softball Camp. Yard also excelled off the field, receiving Big East All-Academic honors in 2008 and 2009 while earn-ing Big East Honor Roll Player of the Week acco-lades once during her career. An exercise science and sport studies major at Rutgers, Yard is currently pursuing her Master’s of Science in management of sports industries at the University of New Haven.

First year head coach Diana Consol-magno hopes to make noise in the America East Conference in 2011 while guiding the Hawks to its first appearance to the conference tour-nament in four years. Looking to im-prove upon a 16-24 season a year ago, Consolmagno inherits a young team that will have 10 freshmen and sophomores on its 14-man 2011 ros-ter.

“We’re not going to begin the sea-son unless we’re looking to go all the way,” responded Consolmagno when asked if 2011 would be a rebuilding year. She continued, “that’s the way it’s going to be every year.”

This year the Hawks welcome four freshmen and two walk-ons to the team. Consolmagno is excited to see this young group compete for consis-tent spots in the defense, as well as contribute offensively as pinch hitters and runners to provide rest to the starters.

Defensively, the youth may scare some of the Hawks’ faithful, but Con-solmagno insists that communication

will help iron out any early mishaps for her group. As for the offense, the squad will look to thrive off the depth, speed and youth provided to the lineup by the freshmen class.

INFIELD

The 2011 edition of Hartford’s infield will be led by a group of players with more youth than experience, however the unit boasts more versatility than possibly any other team in the Amer-ica East. Consolmagno is confident in the infield’s defensive abilities as well as what it will bring to the Hawks’ of-fense this season.

Headlining the group will be a strong sophomore class that because of their growth, work ethic and leader-ship, can easily be mistaken for up-perclassmen as described by Consol-magno.

Kate Wacyk offers Consolmagno a magnitude of options with her ver-satility and ability to play any spot along the infield. The Sellersville, Pa. native’s accurate throw and solid range gives her the ability to easily

play catcher, shortstop, or third base adding flexibility to the Hawks’ de-fense. In addition, the sophomore has proven during the fall season that she can perform at the plate under pressure. As a rookie, Wacyk regis-tered a .945 fielding percentage un-der that rotation and finished sixth on the 2010 squad with a .219 batting average and 21 hits. With 35 starts under her belt, Consolmagno expects Wacyk to have a breakout season in 2011.

Fellow sophomore Melani Maxwell provides the other half of the lead-ership along the infield for the Hawks this season. The Bethpage, N.Y. native will work the left side of the infield for Scarlet and White at short stop and possible option for third base. In addition to her great awareness in the infield and strong arm, Maxwell has also worked hard during the off-season to add power at the plate to her resume.

Consolmagno will look to Jordan Haines to backstop the Hawks in 2011. A sophomore out of King of

hartford hawks softball 7

Prussia, Pa., Haines provides a spark behind the plate with great power offensively and defensively, however her leadership and heart are what Consolmagno most admires in her sophomore catcher. She will again be an integral part of the pitching staff’s success in addition to a con-stant in Hartford’s line-up. As a fresh-man, Haines hit .234 with 10 RBI and caught four base runners in the act.

Consolmagno will look to a pair of freshmen to anchor the middle in-field, a combination that despite being young will provide a strong presence and bring an intense work ethic to the team. A former baseball player from Quebec City, Quebec, Genevieve Morneau-Vaillaincourt brings versatility to the team. Mor-neau-Vaillaincourt will be expected to reach base and use her speed to run the bases well and score. New-comer Amber Andrews will get into the mix of the infield rotation seeing the majority of her time at second base. A contact hitter who will see RBI opportunities in the line-up, the Greenwood, Del. native will cause

ruckus on the base paths for her op-ponents.

Nicole Springer is listed as a pitcher on the Hawks’ 2011 roster; however the power hitter also boasts diversity with the ability to play first base or third base, depending on the pitch-ing rotation and the Hawks’ depth along the infield. An all-around ath-lete, Springer has already proven to be a tremendous offensive threat with the ability to destroy several Hartford’s offensive records. A year ago, she earned first-team all-con-ference honors at designated player last year after batting .325 while belting 19 extra-base hits, including five homers, and driving in 34 runs. Her performance in the circle and at the plate will play a huge role in the team’s success this season.

Manning the first base corner will be Chelsey Mooney, Consolmagno’s lone recruit of this year’s freshman class out of Corona, Calif. Mooney heads into her debut season with high expectations for the Hawks. A left-handed power-hitter, Mooney compliments her offense with a reli-

able glove and has proven to be an aware and intelligent first baseman.

OUTFIELD

In the outfield, the upperclassmen combine to make the most experi-enced group that the Hawks have to offer. Led by three of the team’s four captains, the outfielders will serve as the anchor for the team’s defense.

Lauren Kamena, the team’s lone se-nior, is a solid defensive player who will be seeing the majority of her time in right field. A hard worker who has the speed to cover ground in the outfield, Consolmagno fore-sees a huge impact from the senior performer.

Shannon Simpkins, a junior switch-hitter who recorded a .942 fielding percentage in 2010, will man the cen-ter of the outfield for the Hawks this season. Her closing speed helps track down balls that would otherwise be out of range. A dynamic base run-ner, Simpkins will serve as the team’s one-two hitter, whose main task in the batting line-up will be to utilize her great speed to reach base.

nicole sprinGer

hartford hawks softball8

Closing out the starting outfield for Hartford will be left fielder Erica Phelps, who led the team with a 1.000 fielding percentage while starting 28 games for the Hawks. Last season, the junior added five RBIs and a dou-ble on .203 hitting as a sophomore. Phelps has one of the strongest arms in the outfield and has been swinging the bat well in the offseason.

Joining the outfield this year will be newcomers Kimberly Eisen and Nao-mi Mitchell. Eisen is a speedy out-fielder who also has potential to see time in the Hawks’ infield and due to her speed on the base paths will be used as a pinch runner. A dedicated worker from Providence, R.I., who is admired for her heart and passion for the game, Mitchell will look to get into the experienced rotation as a walk-on freshman. Mitchell has al-ready made an impact on the Hawks’ squad, helping her teammates im-prove on the field every day in prac-tice.

PITCHING

Hartford’s rotation in the pitching

circle will be one of the more intrigu-ing competitions for the team. Led by junior and co-captain Siera Sheehan who started a team-high 24 games, the pitching staff of all right-handers looks to take some pressure off the Hawks’ potentially explosive offense.

Sheehan produced a 4.89 ERA, go-ing 7-12 with 18 complete games in 2010. With 53 strikeouts, she looks to hone her control and improve on those already impressive numbers. A fierce competitor, the Binghamton, N.Y. na-tive has gained valuable experience over the past two years while learn-ing the ins and outs of America East opponents in the process and will be counted on to lead the staff and win big games on conference weekends.

Nicole Springer, the team’s offensive spark, has worked to improve on her pitching as she acted as the depth of the rotation in 2010.

Kaitlyn Meade, the Hawks’ newest addition to their pitching staff, is a right-handed hurler out of Setauket, N.Y. The lone freshman in the rotation, Consolmagno describes the rookie as

a “veteran pitcher,” whose composure will be the key to her success. A four-year member of the softball team at Ward Melville High School, Meade boasted a career ERA of 0.80 with 456 strikeouts, three no-hitters and 12 shutouts.

SCHEDULE

The Hawks’ 2011 slate is highlighted by the squad’s annual spring trip to Florida. In addition, the Hawks will host 22 games on 14 dates at the University Of Hartford Softball Field in West Hartford.

For the first time since the 1992 cam-paign, the Hawks will open their 2011 season in the Northeast, kick-ing-off with a twin bill at Manhattan on March 6. Hartford then makes its return to the Nutmeg State for its season debut at the UH Softball Field when it welcomes the Rhode Is-land Rams for a single game battle on March 9.

After the home opener, Hartford continues its season by making its seventh-straight trip to Kissimmee,

shannon simpKins

hartford hawks softball 9

Fla. for the Rebel Spring Games. The Hawks are slated to play 12 games during its six-day visit to the Sunshine State, kicking off on March 13 with match-ups against Nutmeg State op-ponent Yale and Rider. Highlighted by the program’s first-ever meetings with Eastern Illinois, Houston Baptist and Bucknell, the Scarlet and White will also take on Youngstown State, Butler, Fairleigh Dickinson, Army, UW-Green Bay and Saint Peter’s before the conclusion of the Florida trip.

“We’re trying to play as many pre-season games as possible so that when we get back here for confer-ence games, we know what kind of team we are,” said Consolmagno of the importance of non-conference games.

Upon returning to New England, the Hawks will enjoy a five-game home stand featuring a doubleheader with Iona (March 23) followed by the America East opening weekend series against Binghamton (March 26-27). Hartford will also welcome

conference opponents Stony Brook (April 16-17) and Boston University (April 23-24) to University of Hart-ford Softball Field for a pair of three-game weekend series.

Hartford then plays 10 of its next 13 contests on the road, with a double-header against Siena (April 5) and a single game versus Big East op-ponent Connecticut (April 9) serving as the lone home games. During the road stretch, the Hawks will face Providence, Albany, Marist and in-state squads Central Connecticut and Fairfield.

The Hawks’ longest home stand comes April 21-28 when they host seven games beginning with a dou-bleheader against out-of-conference opponent South Dakota (April 21). Following a three-game weekend se-ries where the squad faces reigning America East champion Boston Uni-versity, Hartford concludes the home stretch when it takes on local rival Sacred Heart for a twin bill (April 28).

Following a weekend series at

UMBC on April 30-May 1, Hart-ford concludes non-conference play with its final three home games be-ginning with a match-up against Central Connecticut on May 4. The Hawks play their final home games on May 5 when Holy Cross invades West Hartford for a pair of contests. The conference schedule and regu-lar season will come to a close with Hartford traveling north to Orono for a three-game, weekend series versus the Maine Black Bears.

The top four teams in the conference have a shot at the America East tour-nament, which the Hawks have been absent from since their 2007 cam-paign. It might take a lot of adjust-ments and rotations, but the 2011 edition of the Hawks are poised for success.

Now in its fourth decade of operation, America East has evolved into one of the most comprehensive NCAA Division I conferences with a commitment to broad-based, competitive athletics programs, com-plementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions.

Progressive in its approach to its more than 3,400 student-athletes, America East recognizes champions in each of its 20 sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's out-door track and field, men's and women's soccer, soft-ball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, and women’s volleyball. America East also conducts the nation’s most comprehensive academic recognition program for student-athletes.

With a geographic footprint covering the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast regions of the United States, America East strives to develop champions in academics, athletics and leadership at its nine member institutions: University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, UMBC, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont.

ACADEMICS…• Vermont captured its sixth straight America East Academic Cup in 2010 after its student-

athletes registered a cumulative 3.19 grade-point average, which was the best mark in the award’s 15-year history. New Hampshire recorded a 3.16 GPA and also eclipsed the former standard, while five other schools earned a 3.0 GPA or better.

• America East’s 3,400 student-athletes registered a combined 3.05 GPA during the 2009-10 academic year and over 60 percent of them were named to America East’s Academic Honor Roll for recording GPA’s of 3.0 or better.

• Seven student-athletes were tabbed ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Amer-icans during the 2009-10 season, the league’s most since the 2005-06 academic year. Twenty others were All-District selections.

• Binghamton’s Sven Vloedgraven (tennis) and Vermont’s May Kotsopoulos (basketball) were the America East Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively.

• Twenty-four America East teams were publicly recognized by the NCAA for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), for finishing among the top 10 percent of teams in the nation, the league’s most since 2006.

ATHLETICS…• Boston University won the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup for the fifth straight

year and eighth time in the last nine years after capturing a league-high tying six cham-pionships, three regular-season titles and three runner-up finishes during the 2009-10

AMERICA EAST CONFERENCEseason.

• Twenty-two America East student-athletes earned All-America recognition, including one in men’s basketball, one each in men’s and women’s soccer, six in men’s la-crosse, seven in women’s lacrosse, one each in field hockey and softball and four in cross country/track & field.

• A record six America East men’s and women’s basketball teams qualified for the postseason: Boston University men (CBI), Boston University women (WNIT), Hartford women (NCAA), Stony Brook men (NIT), Vermont men (NCAA) and Vermont women (NCAA).

• Stony Brook men’s lacrosse climbed to No. 7 in the nation and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship after an 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round.

• Boston University softball and Stony Brook baseball each won a game in its respective NCAA Championship. The Terriers downed UMass, while the Seawolves upended N.C. State.

• Binghamton men’s tennis climbed to No. 43 in the nation while Sven Vloedgraven became the first America East tennis student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA individual championships.

LEADERSHIP…• America East entered into a corporate sponsorship with

Newman’s Own, Inc. and Newman's Own Foundation, which sponsored the first Campus Community Service Challenge to foster social good on the conference’s nine campuses and in surrounding communities. Over $100,000 was donated as part of the Challenge.

• Hartford volleyball player Lindsay Makowicki and Stony Brook baseball player Stephen Marino were named the America East Male and Female Sportsmanship Award winners.

• UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski was named one of the nation's "10 Best College Presidents" by Time Maga-zine.

• Five America East institutions are ranked among the top 110 national universities according to the U.S News and World Report America's Best College Guide and UMBC was recognized as the top “Up-and-Coming” university in the country.

• Several former America East athletes have made a posi-tive impact in the professional ranks:

• Former Hartford men’s basketball star Vin Baker and three-time America East Player of the Year Reggie

Lewis, who captained the Boston Celtics at the time of his premature death, combined to make five NBA All-Star appearances during their careers. Three-time America East Player of the Year Malik Rose played 13 seasons with five teams and contributed to a pair of championships with the San Antonio Spurs.

• Three-time All-America East selection Jose Juan Barea has played three season with the Dallas Mavericks and two-time Player of Year Marqus Blakely played with the Los Angeles Clippers’ summer league squad and earned a two-year contract.

• Current women’s basketball coaches Jennifer Riz-zotti (Hartford) and Cindy Blodgett (Maine) have ap-peared in WNBA action.

• Hartford grad Jeff Bagwell belted 448 home runs in 15 seasons with the Houston Astros and was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 1991 and MVP in 1994.

• Carlos Pena, the 1998 Baseball Scholar-Athlete at Northeastern, earned American League Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2007, won an American League Gold Glove at first base in 2008, made his first All-Star appearance in 2009 and finished with a league-leading 39 home runs. Minnesota Twins’ Joe Nathan, a former Academic All-American at Stony Brook, has been an All-Star four times and won the Rolaids Relief Man Award in 2009.

• Several men’s soccer standouts have played profes-sionally, both in the United States and abroad. Bos-ton University graduate Andy Dorman played four seasons with the New England Revolution in MLS and has spent the last four years in the Scottish and English Premier Leagues. Two-time America East Goalkeeper of the Year Bouna Coundoul from Albany has played five seasons in MLS with the Colorado Rapids and New York Red Bulls and has 25 career shutouts. Steward Ceus (Albany) and Samuel Appiah (Boston University) were drafted by Colorado and the Houston Dynamo each of the last two years.

• Boston University’s Mara Osher, a two-time all-confer-ence honoree, and Casey Brown, the only three-time America East Defender of the Year, were drafted by the Washington Freedom and Boston Breakers of Women’s Professional Soccer, respectively.

WalTEr harrisonuniversity President

Growth, vitality, and ser-vice to the community are key attributes of Walter Harrison’s first 10 years as president of the University of Hartford. Since his appointment as the University of Hartford’s fifth president in 1998, the Univer-sity has experienced a period of energy and momentum un-matched in its history. Presi-dent Harrison has overseen dramatic improvements in ac-ademic quality, finances, and

fundraising.

More than 7,300 students (5,600 undergraduates and 1,700 graduate students) study at the seven schools and colleges of the University of Hartford, which is classified as a doctoral research–intensive university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advance-ment of Teaching. The institution has seen a 15 percent increase in undergraduate enrollment, and a 23-percent increase in de-grees awarded, over the past decade. A highly visible figure on campus, President Harrison is known for his enthusiasm for student life and University activities, and is fondly referred to as Walt by many students.

During President Harrison’s tenure, the University has undertaken a vigorous and comprehensive building campaign. Many of the University’s residence halls have been renovated, and Hawk Hall, the University’s new five-story, 208-bed residence for first-year students, was completed during the summer of 2007. The oval-shaped Alumni Plaza, constructed out of concrete of various col-ors and finishes, now provides students with a large gathering spot on the residential side of campus.

At the heart of this construction campaign are three major new additions to the University’s signature academic programs: The Renée Samuels Center of the Hartford Art School (opened in Jan-uary 2007), the Integrated Science, Engineering, and Technology Complex (opened in 2005), and the Mort and Irma Handel Per-forming Arts Center (opened in September 2008), which houses the Dance and Theatre divisions of The Hartt School. The Handel Center, located in the Upper Albany and Blue Hills neighbor-hoods of Hartford, one mile east of the University’s campus, also contains space for community activities.

Two buildings have been renovated to house two of the Univer-sity’s leading liberal arts programs: Psychology (East Hall) and Communications and Cinema Studies (Abrahms Hall). In 2006, the University opened new state-of-the-art athletic fields for soc-cer, lacrosse, softball, and baseball.

The University’s vibrant relationship with the Greater Hartford community is a hallmark of President Harrison’s tenure. The Uni-versity has become a recognized leader in helping to improve

public schools. It is the only private university in the country with two public magnet schools on campus—the University of Hart-ford Magnet School and the University High School of Science and Engineering. President Harrison’s community involvement is extensive. He serves on the boards of directors of the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges and the Hartford Consortium of Higher Education. He is currently the president of the board of the Hart-ford Stage Company. He serves as trustee or director of a num-ber of other Hartford-area organizations, including the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the Connecticut Science Center, and Suffield Academy. He is also a director of WorldBusiness Capital, an international finance firm based in Hartford. Reflecting his longtime interest in intercollegiate athletics, Presi-dent Harrison chairs the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Committee on Academic Performance, the group charged with implementing academic reforms among the nation’s leading in-tercollegiate athletic programs, and serves on a number of other NCAA committees. He is the immediate past chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. He also serves on the Presidential Advisory Committee of the Association of Governing Boards. All this is a long way from President Harrison’s beginnings as a scholar of American literature and culture. A native of Pitts-burgh, he graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1968, then earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1969. After an interim of three years to serve as a captain in the

United States Air Force, President Harrison earned a doctorate from the University of California–Davis. His doctoral disserta-tion, “Out of Play: Baseball Fiction from Pulp to Art,” was one of the earliest scholarly treatments of baseball and its place in American life. In 1982 President Harrison left full-time teaching to take an ad-ministrative position at Colorado College. He joined Gehrung Associates University Relations Counselors in 1985, becoming president of the firm shortly thereafter. In 1989 President Har-rison moved to the University of Michigan, where he became vice president of university relations and secretary of the university. President Harrison and his wife, Dianne, a scholar of 19th-cen-tury Victorian literature and mystery literature, make their home in Russell House, the president’s residence at the University of Hartford.

director of athleticsPat Meiser, in her 18th year at the University of Hartford, serves as the director of athletics and special assistant to the president.

One of only 30 women director of athletics among the 335 insti-tutions competing at the Division I level, In June of 2009 she was named the Northeast Region I-AAA Under Armour Athletic Di-rector of the Year for the second time (2006), and in May of 1999, she was named one of the nation’s

top 50 women’s sports executives by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal.

At Hartford, Meiser heads a team that is responsible for growing the athletics and academic quality of the program, enhancing revenue and extending the program into the community.

In Meiser’s tenure, seven sports (women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s

volleyball) have won America East Conference championships and ei-ther reached NCAA Division I tournament or national postseason play. Basketball, in particular, has emerged with Meiser’s hiring of Jennifer Rizzotti. The women’s basketball team has been crowned America East Conference champion and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010. The men’s team set a school record with 18 wins in 2007-08 and advanced to the America East Championship finals for the first time in school history.

Revenue enhancement has also been an area of growth for Hartford under Meiser’s leadership. This has taken place through an expanded fund raising and alumni relations effort, development of a corporate sponsorship program, implementation of a licensing program and successful grant submissions. Most significantly, Hartford athletics em-barked on a $10 million athletics capital campaign in April of 2003. The campaign, called Home Field Advantage, funded the renovation of the existing soccer and lacrosse field, the relocation and construction of a softball field, the construction of a baseball field and will include con-struction of a track surrounding an all-purpose field. The ground break-ing for Home Field Advantage took place in April of 2005, and Phase I of the project was completed in 2007. Phase II is presently under way.

Meiser’s commitment to academics is well documented and demon-strated through the success of her student-athletes. Hartford has been among the leaders in The America’s East’s Academic Cup standings

each of the past 10 years. The Hawks won the Cup in 1996-97. They have had a 3.0 or higher in fourteen of the last sixteen semesters. This past academic year, the average student-athlete GPA was 3.06.

Student-athlete and staff engagement has been important for Meiser. She is past chair of the Greater Hartford Convention and Visitors Bu-reau. Her appointment came at a critical time as the city opened a $350 million convention center. Meiser was named a Connecticut “Woman of Merit” by the Girl Scouts in June 2000. She is a board member of both the Connecticut Special Olympics and the YMCA. She is a former board member of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame. While serving in 2007, Meiser served as Co-Chair of the CWHF Gala that celebrated the 35th anniversary of Title IX. The evening brought together four hun-dred of the top female Olympians and national champions with ties to the state of Connecticut.

Meiser has also been involved with various intercollegiate committees and organizations at the conference, regional and national levels. She serves on the Executive Committee of NACDA and is a past President of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (NACDA), has been a professional sport liaison, member of the soccer rules committee and ac-tive as a NCAA Certification representative. Over the years, she has also served a variety of roles in the America East Conference and is presently chair of the Executive Committee.

Prior to joining the Hawks, Meiser was the associate athletics director for administration and senior women’s administrator at the University of Connecticut. During her 10 years at Connecticut, she played a pivotal role in the rejuvenation of the athletics program.

Before arriving at Connecticut, Meiser was the head women’s basket-ball coach and a tenured faculty member at Penn State (1971-81). She gave the first women’s basketball scholarship at Penn State in 1974 and advanced the program to Top-20 status in the late 1970s. In addition, she coached the Gold Medal-winning East team in the inaugural 1979 National Sports Festival.

Meiser holds a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education (1969) from West Chester University and a M.Ed. in education (1971) and an MBA in business administration (1986) from Penn State. She is a native of Lancaster, PA, and has four children: Katherine, 38, wife of Jason Steadman of London; Christopher, 36, husband of Renee Jansen, Boston; Julie, 34, wife of Robert Rioux of State College, PA; and Daniel, 31, West Hartford. She also three grandchildren, Lincoln (5) and Lyle and Josephine, both one.

Three former Hartford student-athletes stand out among those who have played professionally.

Vin Baker, who starred as an All-American on the basketball court for the Hawks, played 13 seasons in the NBA. A four-time NBA All-Star, he averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 791 career games. Baker was picked eighth overall in the June 1993 NBA draft. At the time he was the highest draft pick ever from a Connecticut college or university.

Jeff Bagwell, who played third base for Hartford from 1987 to 1989 and is the New England career leader in batting average at .413, played first base for the Houston Astros. In his 16 years with the Astros he hit .297 with 449 home runs and 1,529 runs batted in. He ranks among Houston’s career leaders in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs and RBI. He was the 1994 National League MVP, 1991 Rookie of the Year, and was a four-time All-Star (1994, 1996, 1997, 1999).

Men’s golfer Jerry Kelly, who topped the Nike Tour in earnings in 1995, has been impressive in his 12 years playing on the PGA Tour. He’s topped $2 million

in earnings in three of the past six seasons, and he played on the United States President’s Cup team in 2003. In 2002, Kelly was sixth on the PGA money list and finished in the Top 25 at 13 tournaments, including wins at the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Advil Western Open.

Men’s golfers Tim Petrovic and Patrick Sheehan have also en-joyed success on the PGA Tour. Petrovic, now in his seventh season, broke through in 2005 with his first career victory at the Zurich Classic. Sheehan is in his fifth year on the PGA Tour and has topped $3 million in career earnings.

Other Hartford athletes who are currently playing in the profes-sional ranks include Tracey Kelusky (National Lacrosse League), Earl Snyder (minor league baseball), Chris Doyle (USL First Division soccer), Daniel Antunez (USL), Saralyn Smith (AVP), Rory Glaves (NLL), Todd Richard (NLL), Derek Suddons (NLL), Jason Clark (NLL), Josh Wasson (NLL) and Matt Holman (NLL).

The University of Hartford honored the long-time commit-ment of Tom and Suzy Reich to the University’s Department of Athletics by naming the western portion of the Sports Center complex, “The Reich Family Pavilion.” The dedica-tion ceremony was held in April 2004. The Pavilion was dedicated to the memory of Barbara J. Reich.

“Tom and Suzy have a wonderful track record of mak-ing a difference in the lives of our young people,” said University President Walter Harrison.

In addition to a $2 million lead gift to the University’s “Home Field Advantage” Campaign (which supported the construction of the outdoor athletics complex), the Reich family’s record of giving has included money for scholar-ships, grants, and annual support to various programs in the Department of Athletics. The Reich Family Athletics Development Fund, established in memory of Tom’s late wife, Barbara, provides student-athletes from the Uni-versity’s less highly profiled teams with scholarships. This past year, six student-athletes benefited from the Reich’s generosity.

“Tom and Suzy also give in ways that can’t be measured financially - through their time, leadership, personal energy and support. They are our biggest fans,” said Director of Athletics Patricia H. Meiser.

Included in the Reich Family Pavilion is the 3,508-seat Chase Arena, home to the University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Both the Chase Arena and the Reich Family Pavilion are part of the bigger Sports Center, which opened in 1990. With the opening, the University of Hartford reached a milestone: the ability to provide a comprehensive athletics complex that not only showcases the University’s intercollegiate programs but also provides resources for the entire campus community.

The Sports Center encompasses 130,000 square feet of space and provides a home for intercollegiate and intramural ath-letics, fitness and health-related activities, and recreation and socializing for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. About 5,000 individuals alone use the Sports Center for wellness alterna-tives. The Sports Center features an indoor swimming pool; courts for volleyball, badminton, squash, and racquetball; two multi-purpose rooms for intramural and recreational use, and two fitness and weight rooms. Six lighted tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool are located behind the Sports Center, adjacent to the new outdoor athletics facility.

The Sports Center also offers such amenities as a pro shop, meeting rooms, concession areas, saunas, locker rooms, and a study hall for student-athletes. A newly constructed women’s basketball suite was completed in the fall of 2008. Included is a state of the art lockerroom, a lounge and a multimedia room for the team to breakdown video. The multimedia room also serves as the media room for postgame press conferences.

The facility serves the community throughout the year by host-ing numerous regional and national activities, including trade shows, high school graduations, dinners, and many other outside athletics events. Some 25 external events take place each year

and draw an estimated 100,000 people to the campus. Most recently, the Sports Center hosted a democratic rally in sup-port of gubernatorial candidate Dan Malloy, which included a visit from former president Bill Clinton.

Located directly behind the Sports Center is a newly constructed outdoor athletics facility, which houses Al-Marzook Field (soccer, lacrosse) and the campus baseball and softball field. All three fields are turf surfaces, while an all-grass recreation field has also been constructed and can be used for team practices as well as intramural and recreation activities.

strength and conditioning

The philosophy we endorse as part of the Hartford Hawks strength and conditioning program is quite simple. We are seeking the best gains, in the least amount of time, in the safest way possible. All training sessions are supervised by the strength and conditioning staff to augment results and reduce any chance for injury.

We endorse a variety of modalities, and forms of training, and are constantly looking to improve the program to make it more efficient. As a student-athlete your time will be limited due to class sched-ule, practice time, travel, homework, eating, sleeping, and hopefully some form of a social life.

A word from Strength And Conditioning

The voluntary training cards provided are basic routines that follow similar protocols you will experience on campus. However, we have simplified them to meet the equipment you most likely will have available to utilize during the summer training period. When you come to campus you will be exposed to the full effects and direction of the strength and conditioning program.

All student-athletes at the University of Hart-ford will experience mental, and physical, challenges that will push them well beyond what each individual thought was possible. Ultimately, the student-athlete is responsible for their success or failure. We as coaches are here to provide a training plan, and guide you.

Following the rules behind the strength and conditioning program will help you achieve the top five reasons for training. The training methods we endorse may be unorthodox, but they will assure we are both overload-ing and being progressive with all training protocols.

The strength and conditioning routines at the University of Hartford are brief and in-tense out of necessity. Once again, our goal remains to maximize training in the least amount of time. Make the commitment to your team. Have laser-focus on goals. Get locked in. This unrelenting approach will make the difference in all phases of training.
