Nevada State Net Amateur Championship (Continued from Page 1) 34 Contestants ascended on Thunder Canyon Country Club in Washoe Valley August 7-9, 2011. The format was changed for this year. All competitors would participate in a 36 holes stroke play qualifier. The top 8 competitors would then compete in a match play to determine the 2011 champion. As the second round completed on Monday, August 9th, 10 players found themselves atop the leader-board. 4 found themselves tied for the final two spots and would have to playoff to determine who would continue into match play. Those competitors included three players from the NNGA, in Michael Mar-quiz, Dennis Young, and Gary Hatlestead as well as current SNGA Senior Net Player of the Year Points Race Leader, Burke Cahill. Burke would eventually fall in the playoff and the final 8 would be decided. Bill Premo of Reno Mens Golf Club would take home the victory in the stroke play portion of the event shooting an impressive Net 141 (-3). Only George Yocum of Badlands Golf Club in Summerlin would be left in the top 8 from the SNGA. As the first matches of the event finished on Sunday Afternoon, Gary Hatlestad found himself playing Dave Linnel, and George Yocum was pitted against Arturo Estrada. Linnel would hold off the steady play of Hatlestead to win his match 3 & 2 while Estrada would handle Yocum 4 & 2 to end any chance of bringing the the Nevada State Net Amateur Trophy back to the southern part of the state. Estrada would prove to be too much for Linnell in the final and would pull out the first ever victory in the event on the 16th hole. Overall the event proved to be a true testament to the players stamina and determination. Congratulations to the players on making the first year of this format such a success. DragonRidge Amateur The 2011 DragonRidge Amateur is complete and the event was a great success. 61 total golfers participated in the one day event at the private DragonRidge Country Club in Henderson, NV. There were three divisions that competed including Net(Open), Senior, and Super Senior.

In the Net (Open) division, Flight 1 belonged to Ben Spoor who shot a Net 73 (+1) to defeat Cy Fernandez by 1 shot. Max Marsico fired a scratch 71 (-1) which put him in 3rd place at Net 75 (+3). Michael Link fired a blistering Net 67 (-5) to win the Open 2 flight and the overall Net (Open) crown. Link bested the Open 2 flight by 6 shots over second place Dennis Moore who shot Net 73 (+1). Barry Isaacs finished in third at Net 76 (+4). Players were unavailable for pictures after the event.

In the Senior Division, Frank Acker got back to his familiar winning ways with a 1 under 71 (-1) to best the scratch field by 4 over second place finishers Steve Fink and John Turk who both fired 75 (+3). In the Net portion of the Senior competition, Bill Montgomery "Monty" fired a Net 69 (-3)

to best Frank Acker by 4 Shots. Burke Cahill and John Turk fin-ished tied for 3rd with Net 75 (+3).

The Super Senior Division provided some playoff drama that lasted 4 sudden death playoff holes before Jim Miller could fend off Ralph Durgin to take the crown. Both Miller and Durgin fired 77 (+5) to get themselves into the playoff for scratch champion and it was a great battle to determine the winner. Sev Leoffler finished in third place shooting 82 (+10). In the Net portion of the Super Senior Competition, long time SNGA player and representative Mike Bridges shined shooting a Net 73 (+1) to win by one shot over Ralph Durgin who shot Net 74 (+2). Jim Cail finished in 3rd at Net 75 (+3).

The SNGA would like to thank all the volunteers that participated in the event and helped make it such a success. We would also like to

thank the DragonRidge Country Club staff for being so generous. Finally we would like to thank our sponsors, Metlife Auto & Home, Las Vegas Golf & Tennis, and Roy's Hawaiian Fusion for supporting our 2011 Tournament Season. Congratulations to the winners and we look forward to seeing you at the 2011 Boulder Creek Amateur in September.

Misunderstood Rules Provided by SNGA

Bunkers are an integral part of almost all course designs in the world. When lying in a bunker, there are some unique situations that are discussed in the USGA Rules of Golf. It is important to be cognizant of these unique situations to avoid penalties during a stipulated round. First, a “bunker” is defined in the Rules of Golf as, “a hazard consisting of a prepared area of ground, often a hollow, from which turf or soil has been removed and replaced with sand or the like. Grass-covered ground bordering or within a bunker, including a stacked turf face (whether grass-covered or earthen) is not part of the bunker. A wall or lip of the bunker not covered with grass is part of the bunker. The margin of the bunker extends vertically upwards, but not downwards. A ball is in the bunker when any part of it lies in or touches the bunker.” SITUATION 1: Can a player touch the sand in the bunker with his club at address? No, this is a breach of Rule 13-4 (General Penalty in Stroke Play is 2 strokes; General Penalty in Match Play is Loss of Hole). SITUATION 2: Can a player place his/her clubs and/or bag not being used for the shot next to him/her in a bunker? Yes, this is exception 1 to Rule 13-4. SITUATION 3: Can a player take a practice swing in a bunker? No, this is again a breach of Rule 13-4. (General Penalty in Stroke Play is 2 strokes, General Penalty in Match Play is Loss of Hole). The penalty is only incurred once, no matter how many practice swings are taken. Decision 13-4/3 SITUATION 4: Can a player touch the sand on the backswing for a stroke in a bunker? No, this is again a breach of Rule 13-4. (General Penalty in Stroke Play is 2 strokes; General Penalty in Match Play is Loss of Hole). Decision 13-4/31. SITUATION 5: Can a player rake footprints between his ball and the hole (on his line of play) before playing a stroke from the bunker? No, this is a breach of Rule 13-2. (General Penalty in Stroke Play is 2 strokes; General Penalty in Match Play is Loss of Hole). Decision 13-2/28 SITUATION 6: Can a player rake footprints from a previous shot in the bunker when his ball still lies in the same bunker? Yes, provided the raking does not breach Rule 13-2 (improving lie, stance, area of intended swing, or line of play) for the upcoming shot. Decision 13-4/36 SITUATION 7: Can a player rake the area intended for a drop after playing a ball from a bunker to an area that is out of bounds? Yes, this action is permissible. Before Dropping, a player could even take practice swings from the bunker in this situation. Decision 13-4/37 For further reference on the USGA’s Decisions regarding play from a bunker, please reference the Decisions on the Rules of Golf pages 155-183.

The Women’s Southern Nevada Golf Association has many won-derful members; women that contribute to the game of golf in a variety of ways. This fall, we are extremely proud of 2 of our members who have achieved especially high honors.

First, Laurie Johnson, who will be inducted into the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame on Saturday, Novem-ber 5 at TPC Summerlin. Laurie is a life-long resident of Las Vegas, who has won several Southern Nevada Championship titles, has worked as a board member for both the WSNGA and the Nevada State Women’s Golf Association, volunteered her services as a CPA where needed and, above all, has always demonstrated an incredible passion for the game. Her love of golf is conveyed to all that see her on the course. As captain of the Southern Nevada Silver Cup team, Laurie inspires the women to perform as a team unit. An experience that is always special. Second honors go to Sherry Jackson. Sherry has earned a trip to the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship to be held September 10-15 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, TN. To play in a USGA National Championship is a remarkable accomplishment and special treat. We are all very proud to have Sherry representing us in Tennessee this fall. WAY TO GO SHERRY!! To round out our fall excitement, the Southern Nevada Silver Cup team will be travelling to Reno the last week of September to take on the team from the North. Practice sessions are underway and the team Is looking strong. 2010 was a victorious year for the South, so we hope to retain the Cup in 2011!

When you visit the new Las Vegas Golf and Tennis SuperStore location near the Las Vegas Strip (Convenient for SNGA at 4711 Dean Martin Drive), you can get fit in the new Taylor-Made fitting center. Progressive top-line thickness promotes confidence at address throughout the set. Advanced groove design promotes increased spin and control. Las Vegas Golfers Win Two PGA Tour Events on Same Weekend

We're not completely sure, but we believe it was the first time ever two PGA Tour golfers with strong ties to Las Vegas have won tournaments on the same weekend. This happened when former UNLV golfer Adam Scott won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and resident Scott Piercy won the Reno-Tahoe Open. Each of the wins was impressive. Scott led pretty much wire-to-wire while Piercy used a third-round 61 to move up the leaderboard. It was Scott's eighth win on the PGA Tour while Piercy won for the first time. "The word that comes to mind was, 'finally'," Piercy told the media after the tournament. "Like I said, I've been in the final group. I've had my chances, and I didn't close in the past. It's just a wave of emotions. It's almost, I don't know what word. In my head, it's like finally. Finally did it. You believe in yourself and everybody just -- everybody is your opponent out here. If you don't believe in yourself and you don't have good results, then you can start not believing in yourself, which is hard. So it's kind of like a pat on your back when you do something good, that you are that good and that you can do it." Quote courtesy ASAPSports.com.
