About Fort Hays State UniversityFounded in 1902 on the plains of Western Kansas, Fort Hays State University is the second youngest of the six state universities.

FHSU celebrated its centennial in 2002.From a humble but exciting beginning, when just two faculty members and a 19-course curriculum greeted 34 students,

our university has grown to a faculty of nearly 300, a support staff of 250 and a student body of 9,000. The university now offers hundreds of courses in each of its four main colleges Education, Arts and Sciences, Business and Leadership, and Health and Life Sciences and the Graduate School. The FHSU Virtual College provides many of the courses through various media to sites across Kansas and beyond.

FHSU is governed by a Board of Regents appointed by the governor of the state of Kansas.FHSU is located in Hays, the largest city in northwest Kansas. Hays began as a wild frontier town and has grown into a

progressive community of about 20,000 people. The old and new blend beautifully to form a city that is small enough to be comfortable yet large enough to provide abundant cultural, commercial and entertainment opportunities. In 1996, Hays was recognized as an All-America City.

The university sits on a campus of 4,160 acres of land that once was part of the historic Fort Hays frontier military post, and it recently expanded to include the relocated Sternberg Museum of Natural History on a site adjacent to Interstate 70 in northeast Hays. Big Creek, with its shady, grassy banks, meanders through the main campus, providing a tranquil learning atmosphere and serving as a natural laboratory for students in the biological sciences. With its stately limestone buildings and profuse fl owers, trees and shrubs, our campus has often been called the prettiest in Kansas.

FHSU is academically superior to many comparable universities, offers students an electronic learning and living environment, and is richly endowed by heritage and tradition. Students come to our university for a multitude of reasons, but surveys show that their overwhelming reason is the universitys reputation for academic excellence and its caring faculty.

The university supports one of the most extensive and successful intercollegiate sports programs of any comparably sized college or university in America, boasting numerous All-American athletes and national championships. More than 350 athletes compete annually in eight mens and eight womens sports. FHSU is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which comprises 10 schools from the states of Kansas and Missouri.

The university also serves as the cultural center of western Kansas, featuring fi ne arts exhibitions, performing arts presentations by faculty, students and traveling professional troupes, and a Presidential Lecture Series.

Dr. Edward H. Hammond - Fort Hays State President Dr. Edward H. Hammond is the eighth President of Fort Hays State University. A man of boundless enthusiasm and energy whose style is upbeat and progressive, Dr. Hammond was born in McAllen, Texas, but raised in the Kansas City area. Prior to his current post, President Hammond gained educational experiences and shared his expertise at the universities of Louisville, Seton Hall, Southern Illinois, Purdue, and Missouri-Columbia. The President holds bachelors and masters degrees from Emporia State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia. President Hammond has been extremely active since assuming the leadership of the university in the summer of 1987. He laid the groundwork for a cooperative educational initiative between FHSU and the

community colleges in western Kansas. He has watched his dream to totally computerize the campus become a reality and created an organization comprised of business and community leaders from 54 western Kansas counties and helped to establish scholarship programs for potential minority school teachers at Garden City and Liberal. Dr. Hammond has played a major role in furthering economic development in Hays and western Kansas and introduced a voice mail system that vaulted the foreign language efforts of FHSU into an elite class. He prompted the completion of the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center for the cultural development of the area and launched the expansion of Sternberg Museum to its new location on Interstate 70. He obtained federal and state funding for the universitys new $12 million science building and completed a $20 million capital campaign to raise private monies for the enhancement of many university programs. President Hammond has been published widely and is in demand nationally as an educational consultant because of his expertise in risk management, staff and institutional liability, sexual harassment, and alcohol education issues. Hammond is married to the former Mary Sprenkel. Hammond has two daughters, Kelly and Julie, and one son, Lance.

LEWIS FIELD STADIUM is the 6,362-seat home of the Tiger football team and track and fi eld teams. The stadium was constructed in 1936 on what was formerly the Golden Belt Fairgrounds, and was named in honor of William Alexander Lewis, president of Fort Hays State University from 1913 to 1933. The native limestone structure was refurbished to its former glory in 1993 when 57 years of weathering was sandblasted away. The Poligras artifi cial surface installed in 2003, which plays similar to natural grass, replaced the old STADIA-Turf, which had been in use since 1993. Prior to the start of the 1996 season, seating was replaced throughout the stadium. The seating includes 1,000 chairback seats on the west side and new bench seating in the remainder of the stadium. A new Tiger locker room, coach offi ces, and player meeting rooms were completed in the summer of 2006 on the east side of the stadium. The new locker room has carpet fl ooring and individual lockers for 90 players. Offi ces and meeting rooms are located upstairs on the east side of the stadium. The 8-lane rubber and polyurethane Alex Francis track, named to honor the former Tiger track & fi eld coach, was refurbished with a new red surface in 2003. The majority of fi eld events are conducted outside the north wall.

    Lewis Field Stadium

Gross Memorial Coliseum GROSS MEMORIAL COLISEUM is the home of the Fort Hays State mens and womens basketball, volleyball, wrestling and indoor track and fi eld. The 6,814-seat arena was fi nished in August of 1973 at a cost of seven million dollars. The Tigers made the move across campus from Sheridan Coliseum which seated 2,000. Paul Busch Gross is the namesake of the Coliseum. Gross coached basketball at FHSU from 1930 to 1946. Major renovations are taking place in the coliseum in the summer of 2011 with the installation of a completely new playing surface and indoor track, and completely remodeled locker rooms for the mens and womens basketball teams. The old wood surface, which had been in place for at least a couple of decades, will be stripped down to the cement underneath and a more forgiving wood surface is being installed. A new track will be laid over the existing one around the outside of the wood playing surface. Remodeled locker rooms for the basketball teams are scheduled to be ready sometime in the fall of 2011. In the summer of 2008, changes were made with the addition of chairback seating on the lower level of the coliseum. Approximately 650 chairback seats were installed along the sidelines of the court. New composite retractable bleachers were installed on both ends of the court. The chairback seats and new bleachers replace the old wooden bleachers that encompassed the entire lower level. Prior to the start of the 2006-07 season, the wood playing fl oor was resurfaced to refl ect the Tigers affi liation with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. A new Tiger logo is located in the circle at half-court. Prior to the 1996-97 season, several changes were made to Gross Memorial Coliseum. Additions included the construction of new locker rooms and the remodelling of two existing locker rooms. The sound system was upgraded with the addition of 16 speakers and a new sound board which allows for programming of music, messages and sound effects. Prior to the 1997-98 season, two message boards on each end of the coliseum were installed. Gross Memorial Coliseum is a multipurpose facility that hosts the KSHSAA Class 1A State Basketball Tournament, the KSHSAA Class 3-2-1A State Wrestling Championships, the KSHSAA Class 2A and 1A State Volleyball Championships, and concerts (seating for 10,000). The Coliseum houses the FHSU athletic offi ces, a large athletic training room, locker rooms, concession stands, a press box and the Field Strength Facility.

    Larks Park

LARKS PARK is the home of the Fort Hays State baseball team. The park is owned by the city of Hays, but operated by the FHSU athletic department. Larks Park was built in 1940 as part of a Works Progress Administration project. It is the oldest baseball park in the state of Kansas. Larks Park is located at Fourth and Main in Hays. The park features a limestone frame with restrooms, concession facilities and seating for 1,200 Tiger fans, although a record 1,868 turned out on April 8, 2005, to watch FHSU play Mesa State College. The park has seen several improvements over the past few years. New fencing and a new scoreboard were installed in 2008. The infi eld playing surface was replaced during the summer of 2003. The poligras infi eld was necessary due to the numerous games that are played in the park each year. The poligras turf is the same surface that was installed at Lewis Field Stadium for football. Bluegrass sod was laid in the infi eld just alongside the turf. The outfi eld has been leveled and reseeded. New lights were installed in March of 2000, which allows the Tigers to play additional night games. Park dimensions are 322 down the left fi eld line and 319 to right, 349 in the power alleys and 405 to center fi eld.

    Tiger Stadium

TIGER STADIUM is the home of the Fort Hays State softball team. The stadium was completed in 1999 as softball was reinstated as an intercollegiate sport at FHSU that year. Tiger Stadium is on the south side of Gross Coliseum/Cunningham Hall. The park has seating for 500 Tiger fans. The park was upgraded before the 2007 season with the installation of a new Oklahoma red clay infi eld surface. Drought resistant fescue grass is the surface in the outfi eld and along the outside of the infi eld. Additional upgrades included the installation of protective piping and a green windscreen all along the outfi eld fence. The additions help enclose the fi eld and give the facility more of a ballpark feel. In the summer of 2007, a new net-style backstop replaced the old chain link backstop behind home plate. Most recently, a new scoreboard was installed beyond the outfi eld wall. Both dugouts were built above ground with a six foot high protection fence in front. A large press box sits behind the stands. Park dimensions are 200 down the left and right fi eld line, 210 in the power alleys and 220 to center fi eld. A new wooden outfi eld fence, installed in 2010, stands eight feet high. Lights were installed during the summer of 2003 to aid in hosting tournaments and night contests.

FHSU Tennis Courts Smoky Hill Country Club

The FHSU TENNIS COURTS are home to the Lady Tiger tennis team. Six courts are available for both tournament and dual match contests. The courts were completed in 1994 on the south side of the Gross Memorial Coliseum/Cunningham Hall Complex.

SMOKY HILL COUNTRY CLUB is home to the Fort Hays State mens and womens golf teams. The par-71 layout is one of the premier golf courses in northwest Kansas. The course opened in 1962 and was designed by Greg H. Nash. Smoky Hill Country Club is located at 3303 Hall in Hays.

FHSU Soccer Stadium at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex The FHSU SOCCER STADIUM will open for play in the fall of 2011, the inaugural season of Fort Hays State mens and womens soccer. The Tigers home stadium is part of the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex which also features eight baseball/softball fi elds and eight football/soccer fi elds. The stadium is a state of the art soccer-specifi c complex with a synthetic turf playing surface and lighting that meets NCAA regulations for holding night contests. LEWIS FIELD STADIUM is the 6,362-seat home of the Fort Hays State University football team. It is also home to the Tiger track and fi eld program in the spring. The stadium received a major facelift prior to the 2003 season with a new playing turf, track and lighting system. The Poligras artifi cial surface, which plays similar to natural grass, replaced the old STADIA-Turf, which had been in use since 1993. The new lighting system installed eliminated shadows on the playing surface. The native limestone structure around the outside of the stadium was refurbished to its natural state in 1993 when 57 years of weathering was sandblasted away. Both endzones are gold with black lettering spelling out Fort Hays in the north and Tigers in the south. The eight-lane rubber and polyurethane Alex Francis track, named to honor the legendary FHSU track & fi eld coach, was refurbished with a new red surface in 2003. The majority of the fi eld events are conducted outside the north wall. Prior to the start of the 1996 season, seating was replaced throughout the stadium. The seating includes 1,000 chairback seats on the west side and bench seating in the remainder of the stadium. Lewis Field was constructed in 1936 on what was formerly the Golden Belt Fairgrounds, named in honor of William Alexander Lewis, president of Fort Hays State University from 1913 to 1933. The fi eld is located beside a spacious tree-lined drive and is just a short walk from the campus residence halls and downtown business district. Dressing rooms, concession areas, athletic training facilities, restrooms and equipment storage rooms are located under the grandstands. An complete remodel of the Tiger locker room was completed prior to the 2006 season with carpet fl ooring and individual lockers for 90 players. Admittance to the stadium is allowed through two main gates, one on the east side and one on the west side. Four ticket windows are in service for each game. Outside the limestone wall to the southeast is the future site of the Indoor Training Facility. The facility is planned to be operational by the fall of 2012.

The 2,800 square-foot Hubbard Press Box, which sits atop the west side of Lewis Field Stadium, was completed in the spring of 1997. The press box is named in honor of R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard of Palm Desert, Calif., who provided the majority of the funding. The upper level of the two-story press box features a large area in which 20 or more electronic media personnel can report on college athletic contests. Available for reporters are radio and television booths, hookups, a camera deck, a fi lming room and a restroom. Booths are also available for both home and visiting football coaches for scouting. The upper level also houses scoreboard, public address and statistical crews. The lower level of the facility is the hospitality area where President Edward H. Hammond hosts university guests. Inside the

University Suite are tables and chairs for 40 guests, a kitchen and a restroom. The entire press box is heated and air conditioned and has an integrated sound system whereby users may listen to radio broadcasts, view televised games and pick up crowd noise from outside the box. An elevator carries university guests, media personnel and people with disabilities from ground level to their destinations. Areas designed especially for the disabled are located at the top of the stadium both north and south of the fi rst level of the press box. Prior to the 1999 season, the press box on the east side of the stadium was renovated creating two executive suites. The two suites may be rented by individuals or businesses for entertaining during Tiger football games.

A complete renovation of the Fort Hays State locker room occurred in the summer of 2006. The Tiger locker room is located below the grandstand on the east side of Lewis Field Stadium. The room includes 90 individual lockers that circle a dividing wall in the middle of the room. Each locker is equipped with a top shelf for shoulder pads, a small locking cabinet for personal belongings, and a bottom compartment with hangers for a helmet and jersey. A connecting bench runs all along each locker which provides a seat for each player to sit in front of their locker. Each locker has the players number and name on a plate above the locker. The main area of the locker room is carpeted. A new shower and bathroom facility is attached to the main area. The locker room includes three wide dry erase boards and Tiger logos on the dividing wall in the middle of the room.

    INDOOR TRAINING FACILITYINDOOR TRAINING FACILITY

New Indoor Training FacilityProposed for the Fall of 2012

A new multi-million dollar indoor training facility is scheduled to be built by the fall of 2012. The new training facility will be located at the southeast corner of the campus next to Lewis Field Stadium. This 50,000+ square-foot facility will be equipped with weights, cardio equipment, synthetic track and an artifi cial covered surface that will extend 50-60 yards. Fort Hays has already taken the next step to be competitive in the MIAA by committing to build the indoor training facility. Thats a really exciting project and its a big step in the right direction, said Coach Chris Brown. The project, once complete, will place FHSU as one of the few schools in the MIAA with such a training facility and give a real advantage on training Tiger Football players in the future. It takes time to build a program, but Fort Hays is doing what it takes to be competitive in the MIAA. If youre competitive in this conference, it means you are competitive nationally, said Brown. Renderings of the proposed project are above and below.

Chris Brown Coaching Era Begins at FHSU Fort Hays State begins a new era of football with Chris Brown entering his fi rst year as head coach of the program. Brown came to Fort Hays State from within the conference. He was the defensive coordinator for nine seasons at Washburn University. While at Washburn, he helped build the program into perennial MIAA contenders with one conference championship, two NCAA playoff appearances, and two bowl game appearances. Brown has spent his entire coaching career in the state of Kansas, working as an assistant for a very successful Liberal (Kan.) High School program from 1998 to 2001 in his hometown prior to taking the assistant position at Washburn in 2002. Brown was one of the top players all-time in NCAA Division II at Pittsburg State University as a three-time All-American, the CNN Division II National Player of the Year in 1995 and named to the NCAA Quarter Century Team for all players from 1975 to 1999 at free safety. Brown takes over a program that fi nished 10th in the MIAA in 2010 with an overall record of 3-8 and 1-8 conference mark. He will look to build the program into a conference contender as the Tigers have enjoyed just one winning season (6-5 in 2009, sixth in the MIAA) since joining the MIAA in 2006. He will have a challenge in the fi rst year as all of the skill position starters on offense from last year were lost to graduation, including FHSU all-time passing leader Mike Garrison and All-American wide receiver O.J. Murdock. All of the returning starters on offense are offensive linemen. The defense will have an entirely new starting front on the line. The most experience lies at the linebacker and defensive back positions.

Quarterbacks Big shoes will need to be fi lled in the quarterback role with the departure of two-time All-MIAA performer and FHSU all-time passing leader Mike Garrison. Redshirt-senior Blake McAhren is in his third year with the program. He saw very limited action in 2009 as Garrisons backup and redshirted last season to have one year of eligibility remaining. He led the Bay Valley Conference in passing yards per game as a sophomore in 2008 at Solano (Calif.) Community College. A pair of newcomers that will push McAhren for the starting job include junior transfer Anthony Sheppard and true freshman Treveon Albert. Sheppard comes to the program from Hinds (Miss.) Community College where he was an all-conference second team selection in 2010, throwing for 1,866 yards and 15 touchdowns and completing 56.3 percent of his attempts. Sheppard redshirted as a true freshman at Western Kentucky University before playing at Hinds. He was an all-state fi rst team selection as a senior and led Florida powerhouse Pahokee High School to consecutive Class 2B state championships. Albert comes to the program from Grady High School in Atlanta, Ga., where he was an all-city fi rst team selection as a senior, throwing for over 2,100 yards and 25 touchdowns and rushing for over 450 yards. A pair of in-state recruits add depth to the roster at quarterback, which includes sophomore transfer Mason Salmans and true freshman Jared Helfrich. Salmans redshirted the 2009 season and was a member of the roster in 2010 at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He was a two-time all-state selection in his prep career at Pawnee Heights High School. Helfrich was an all-state selection as a senior, throwing for 2,347 yards and 20 touchdowns leading Dodge City High School to the state semifi nals in Class 6A.

Running Backs The Tigers lost two-time All-MIAA selection James Walker from their backfi eld, but he had very capable reserves behind him in 2010 that should have a chance to shine this year. Senior Ricky Jacques played in 10 games for the Tigers last year, rushing for 154 yards on 42 attempts. He also caught nine passes out of the backfi eld for 75 yards. With a year of experience under his belt, sophomore Edward Smith could be a favorite for the starting role with his speed. Fans saw fl ashes of his ability last year as he ran for 101 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. He averaged 6.7 yards per carry in his nine games played. Smith saw quite a bit of time returning kicks with 251 yards on 16 returns. The Tigers should have talented depth in the backfi eld once again this year. Junior transfer Andre Smith, Jr., could push Jacques and Ed Smith for playing time right away. Smith comes to the program from Bakersfi eld (Calif.) College where he split even time at running back as a sophomore in 2010, rushing for 436 yards on 108 attempts and averaging 32.0 yards per kick return. He received a medical hardship in 2009 but dazzled his freshman year averaging 7.8 yards per carry with 707 yards.

The Tigers have three other players returning from the 2010 roster listed at running back, which includes sophomore Shaun Ohlde, who saw time on special teams, and a pair of redshirt-freshmen in Dylan Pfeifer and Chase Kreutzer. Pfeifer and Ohlde saw quite a few reps running the ball in the 2011 spring game. Chance Bulmer is listed at fullback. He redshirted the 2007 season at FHSU but was not part of the team the last three years. A pair of freshman newcomers looking to make an impact on the program include Micheal Jordan from Kerens, Texas, and Cale Sharp from Salina, Kan. Jordan was an all-state fi rst team selection at running back for Kerens High School, posting 1,786 rushing yards and 298 receiving yards. Sharp was a two-time all-state running back at Salina Central High School, where he rushed for over 3,000 yards and 35 touchdowns in his prep career.

Receivers/Tight Ends The Tigers lost three All-MIAA receivers from the 2010 squad, which included All-American O.J. Murdock, who set a school record for receiving yards in a season, Cordarol Scales and tight end Beau Gadwood. Senior Anthony Smith is the only returner with signifi cant experience, an All-MIAA performer in 2009. What should have been his senior year in 2010 was cut short by injury and he was granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA. He had 25 receptions for 297 yards as a junior in 2009. The Tigers have three players that converted from quarterback to wide receiver in the spring of 2011, which includes redshirt-sophomore Keaton Callins, junior Cole Cherryholmes, and sophomore Tanner Hageman. Callins redshirted last season, Cherryholmes did not appear in any games, and Hageman entered one game late at quarterback to close a blow out win for the Tigers. The Tigers will look to possible late transfers and true freshmen to bring life to the aerial game in 2011. Fort Hays State has two true freshmen listed at the position that could battle for playing opportunities, which includes Garrett Holle and Kelly Pearson. Holle was an all-state honorable mention selection and fi rst team all-district and all-city selection as a senior, accumulating 56 receptions for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns at Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, Ariz. Pearson was an all-state selection in 2010 at Goodland (Kan.) High School. The only transfer listed on the roster as of July 20 is Kevin Roya who played in fi ve games last year at Modesto (Calif.) Junior College. The Tigers have three returners at tight end this year in senior Chase Leake, Eric Jusko, and Grant Brown. Leake and Jusko are seniors and Brown is a junior. Leake was the only player of the three to record a reception last year. Jusko served as the teams long snapper and could see that role once again this year on special teams. Brown was converted to the offensive line last year but returns to his natural tight end position this year. Junior transfer Eli Cordon could be a solid option to replace Gadwood as he was an all-conference second team selection at Iowa Western Community College. Junior transfer Colby Kamm played two years at Butler (Kan.) Community College. True freshman Zack Gaughan, a local product from Hays High School, was a two-time all-state selection at tight end.

Offensive Linemen All of the returning starters from last years offense are on the offensive line. Those four individuals include seniors Lamar Leon and Casey Sorrell, and juniors Hawk Rouse and Josh Reese. Leon started in all six games he played in but battled injury issues throughout the year. He started four games at left tackle and two games at right guard. Sorrell started eight of the 10 games he played in, all at right guard. Rouse was the only player of the four to start in all games in 2010, all at left guard. Reese was a starter at right tackle in two games and at left tackle in seven games. Other offensive linemen returning from the 2010 team are senior Mitchell Paneno and redshirt-freshman Dylan Young. The Tigers have 10 newcomers listed at offensive line, half are transfers and the other half are freshmen. Junior college transfers include Mario Abundes, Dimecus Brown, Logan Jones, and Keaton Tuttle. Abundes (Bakersfi eld (Calif.) College), Brown (Northwestern Oklahoma State) and Jones (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M) are all juniors and two-year starters at their respective colleges. Tuttle is also a junior and helped Iowa Western Community College to a conference championship last year. The other transfer is freshman Tyler McCluskey, who redshirted last year at the University of Northern Colorado. Freshmen include Luke Edney, Ethan Lington, Lex Rosson, Jesse Trent, and Tanner Willhoft. Edney, native of Westminster, Colo., was an all-conference fi rst team selection at Academy of Charter

Rosson was a three-year starter and all-district selection at Edmond North High School in Edmond, Okla. Trent was an all-state fi rst team selection in both football and wrestling, earning an individual state championship in wrestling at Dodge City High School in Dodge City, Kan. Willhoft is one year removed from high school but was a local all-area selection at Hays High School.

Defensive Linemen The Tigers will have a completely new starting front on defense with the graduation of all four starters from last

year, which included All-MIAA First Team selection Jacob Crossman. However, four of the fi ve returning players at this position saw signifi cant time in 2010. Returners include seniors Edwin Herbert, Ernesto Martinez, and Cameron Shelton, junior Aaron Burton, and redshirt-sophomore Tanner Wiens. Herbert battled injury issues throughout the season and started in fi ve of the nine games he played and recorded 17 tackles. Martinez played in all 11 games in 2010 and made three starts while accumulating nine tackles. Shelton played in 10 games as a back-up and also recorded 17 tackles. Burton played in all 11 games and recorded 16 tackles and a forced fumble. Wiens redshirted last year after transferring from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. The Tigers have seven newcomers listed on the defensive line, which includes three transfers and three true freshmen. Basil Bandy is a junior transfer from Santa Rosa (Calif.) Community College who recorded nearly 30 tackles and two sacks in 2010. Emmanuel Scott is a junior transfer from De Anza (Calif.) College where he recorded 32 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions as a sophomore in 2010. Luke Keener is a sophomore transfer from Garden City (Kan.) Community College,

where he recorded 35 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2010 as a freshman. Freshmen include Walter Garrett, Johnny Hubbard III, Sam Leighton, and Alex Muckenthaler. Garrett

played both offensive and defensive line for Rockwall (Texas) High School. Hubbard III was a fi rst team all-district fi rst team selection at A. Maceo Smith High School in Dallas. Leighton played an hour up the road at Quinter (Kan.) High School where he was an all-state, all-district, and all-league selection. Muckenthaler played his prep career at Bluestem High School in Leon, Kan.

Linebackers FHSU has a lot of experience returning at the linebacker position. All three starters from last year return in seniors Alex Whitehill, Nick Dreitz, and Brock Einspahr. Whitehill was an All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection last year who ranked second in the MIAA in tackles (114) and 12th in NCAA Division II. Concensus Draft Services tabbed him as a Preseason First Team All-American for NCAA Division II this year. He was the fi rst FHSU player to record at least 100 tackles in a season since 2003. Dreitz ranked third on the team in tackles with 63 after leading the team the year before with 89. He is 12 tackles shy of 200 in his career at FHSU. Einspahr started nine of the 10 games he played last year, recording a career-high 40 tackles. The Tigers are deep at this position with three juniors that have signifi cant playing experience. Layton Hickel recorded 40 tackles last year, starting three of 11 games. He was third on the team in tackles in 2009 with 79. A.J. Woodall recorded 12 tackles last year in 10 games played and Kyle Perry played in four games. Sophomore Chris Jones returns to the squad but did not play last year and Steven Koenig redshirted last year as a true freshman. All of the newcomers listed are true freshmen, which includes Jay Kindler, Tyler Mathers, Antonio McCray, and Casey Sedbrook. Kindler was a fi rst team all-state and all-district selection in eight-man football for Alma (Neb.) Public Schools. Mathers was a three-time all-district selection for Wylie High School in Wylie, Texas. McCray was a fi rst team all-district selection at A. Maceo Smith High School in Dallas, Texas. Sedbrook, a local product, was an all-state selection at Hays High School.

Defensive Backs The Tigers have seven returners at defensive back in 2011, led by 2010 starters Tim Parker and Korey Allison. Parker started all 11 games at cornerback last year as a sophomore, leading the team in interceptions with three while recording 24 tackles and four pass break-ups. Allison came on strong in the second half of last season, starting six of the 11 games. He fi nished sixth on the team in tackles with 52 and had one interception and four pass break-ups. Juniors Austin Hubert and Stephen Marcotte saw signifi cant action in 2010. Hubert fi nished with eight tackles in 11 games played and Marcotte fi nished with seven tackles in nine games played. Sophomore Zach Nash saw the majority of his time on special teams, recording seven tackles in 10 games played. Jared Lyle and Devin Hoffman redshirted as true freshmen in 2010. The Tigers have a stockpile at this position with 15 newcomers listed. Transfers include juniors Andreas Ashwood, Kedron Paul, and Judah Linder, and sophomores Seth Klausmeyer and Sherod Murdock. Ashwood transferred from the University of Toledo where he played in 20 games over two seasons, making two starts. Paul transferred from Butte (Calif.) College where he played two seasons with four career interceptions and over 800 kick and punt return yards. Linder played two years at Chaffey (Calif.) College and recorded 52 tackles and two interceptions last year. He originally signed with Iowa State University out of high school where he redshirted a year. Klausmeyer is the only in-state transfer at this position, coming to the program from Garden City (Kan.) Community College, where he recorded 24 tackles and an interception as a freshman last year. Murdock is the younger brother of former FHSU wide receiver and All-American O.J. Murdock. He has been out of football for a couple of seasons since playing in 2008 at Pearl River (Miss.) Community College. He originally committed to the University of Pittsburgh out of high school. There are 10 true freshmen listed at this position, which includes Jeff Balkenbush, Josh Balman, Taylor Connors, Shaquille Cooper, Keaton Engel, Taylor Hopkins, Scott Russell, Taylor Stonebraker, Grady Tichenor, and Aaron Wondra. Balkenbush was an all-city and all-district selection at Edmond Memorial High School in Edmond, Okla. Balman, a local recruit from Hays High School, was a two-time all-conference performer at defensive back. Cooper had his senior year cut short due to injury, but averaged 11.1 yards per carry as a running back at Coral Gables (Fla.) High School. Connors was a two-time all-conference selection at Arvada West High School in Arvada, Colo. Engel was an all-league selection at Modesto Christian High School in Modesto, Calif. Hopkins was an all-district and all-state performer for Burke High School in Omaha, Neb. Russell was an all-conference selection for Brighton High School in Brighton, Colo. Stonebraker is an in-state recruit from Lyons High School in Lyons, Kan. Tichenor, native of Valley Falls, Kan., was a two-time all-league selection at Jefferson West High School. Wondra, native of Wichita, Kan., was an all-league selection at Maize South High School.

Kickers/Punters Fort Hays State returns its placekicker and punter from a season ago in junior Tyler Kimbrough and senior Ethan Kosjer. Kimbrough booted 34 extra points and nine fi eld goals in his fi rst year with the Tigers after transferring from the University of West Alabama. Kosjer led the MIAA in punting average in 2010 at 42.7 yards per boot, the second-highest single-season average in FHSU history. Kosjer earned All-MIAA and all-region honors in 2009 as a sophomore even though his average was better as a junior in 2010. The only newcomer to the team is freshman Robert Weber from Garden Plain High School in Garden Plain, Kan.
