Staying on Plan In the third quarter, our ONE Ford plan was truly tested

with the strong volatility in the marketplace. Fortunately, our balanced portfolio of high-quality, fuel-efficient vehicles continued to propel us to sales and market share gains in the quarter.

For the third quarter, we were able to achieve a year-over-year increase versus 2008, marking the first time in four years that we reported a quarterly sales increase.

Our full-year forecast for 2009 remains between 10.5 and 11 million units, as the economy continues to slowly recover into 2010.

Our product led transformation plan remains unchanged and is working. This is evidenced by our strong momentum of the all-new Taurus with year-to-year sales up 60 percent as our new flagship sedan continues to gain visibility in the marketplace.

Sales of Focus, Fusion, Escape and F-Series also remain solid and continue to drive market share gains. September marked the eleventh time in the last 12 months where Ford has gained retail market share.

In addition, we recently unveiled the all-new 2011 F-Series Super Duty at the Texas State Fair. This truck is loaded with great technology and all-new powertrain options for customers who need a truck to do some of the toughest jobs in America. As expected, Super Duty received rave reviews from media and State Fair attendees.

As we enter the final quarter of the year, we should all feel proud of our accomplishments thus far despite a very turbulent marketplace during the first three quarters of 2009. While we expect a modest recovery in the fourth quarter, it is critical that we stay focused on delivering world class products our customers want and value.

Thank you for your continued commitment to executing our plan.

Ford adds shifts to plants in Kansas City, Dearborn

Ford has added third production shifts to its Kansas City Assembly Plant and the Dearborn Truck Plant to meet the demand for fuel-efficient Ford Escapes, Mercury Mariners and Ford F-150s.

Adding a third crew on the SUV line at Kansas City will deliver approximately 2,400 additional Escapes and Mariners by the end of October.

In Dearborn, the changes made in late September will mean the production of approximately 10,000 additional F-150s.

Ford Focus selected to two ‘best car’ lists

The Ford Focus was recently chosen as one of AutoWeek magazine’s “2009 Best Cars for College” and was once again

named as one of Kelley Blue Book’s “Coolest Cars under U.S. $18,000.”The Focus has an EPA-estimated 35 mpg highway with a five-

speed manual and 34 mpg with the automatic. It comes standard with four-wheel ABS brakes and

AdvanceTrac® with ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and is available with such options as SYNC™, heated leather-trimmed front seats, a moonroof and SIRIUS® satellite radio.

Ford Mustang to hit the NASCAR circuit

Ford’s winningest race car – the Mustang – will make its NASCAR debut in the 2010 Nationwide Series.

Testing and production of the Mustang racers begins this fall. Currently, Ford Fusions are used in the Nationwide series and they will continue in NASCAR’S Sprint Cup series.

Since 1964, the Mustang has compiled more than 2,000 professional racing victories in the NHRA, Grand-Am, SCCA, IMSA, NMRA, NMCA and other racing series.

Sales

Despite a 6 percent decline in September U.S. sales, Ford estimated it gained more than 2 points of market share compared to the same period a year ago.

September also marked the 11th time in the last 12 months Ford has posted a retail share increase.

For the third quarter, Ford sales increased 5 percent versus a year ago, making it the only full-line manufacturer to experience a sales increase for the period.

“Instead of leaving us vulnerable to the peaks, valleys and dramatic segments shifts that shaped the industry in the third quarter, our broad and better-balanced product line delivered sales and share gains from all corners – Focus, Fusion, Escape and F-Series; small, medium and large; cars, utilities and trucks,” said Ken Czubay, vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

The all-new 2010 Ford Taurus beat increasing sales objectives throughout September, finishing the month with 60 percent more sales than a year ago.

“I don’t think you’ll find many products that bucked the industry trend this well,” Czubay said. “Also encouraging to us is that consumers are equipping the new Taurus with a very high level of content.”

F-Series posted its second

consecutive sales increase in September (up 4 percent), pushing its year-to-date full-size truck market share up 3 percentage points to 35 percent.

Ford’s new EcoBoost™ engine technology continues to exceed planned rates as September sales nearly tripled those in August.

Czubay said the improving residual values of the company’s products provide the opportunity for Ford to expand its leasing program. Certain vehicle lines and geographic areas will be targeted; details will be announced soon.

“We’ve got quite a bit going on in the market place,” he said. “I think we see the gradual improvement in the economy…I’m quite optimistic about October.”

Another new vehicle is coming to Ford showrooms in North America in late 2011 – the seven-seat Ford C-MAX “people mover.”

Announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the European-developed C-MAX will join the next-generation Ford Focus sedan and five-door hatchback models, which are set to launch in late 2010 in the U.S. It is one of up to 10 unique models Ford will create from its all-new global C-car platform developed under the ONE Ford strategy.

The new Ford Focus C-MAX demonstrates that compact, seven-seat vehicles can be stylish and desirable while still delivering outstanding space and functionality.

“People will gravitate toward C-MAX for the way it looks and drives, and not just because it’s practical and versatile – and that’s going to help us reach a whole new group of customers,” said Mark Fields, president, The Americas.

Besides seating for up to seven, the C-MAX features twin sliding doors neatly integrated into the exterior, with the door rail concealed by the vehicle’s strong shoulder line.

The exterior and interior designs of the C-MAX are the

latest evolution of Ford’s “kinetic design” language, which appears next year on the North American Ford Fiesta.

The design includes a signature trapezoidal lower grille, headlamps flaring back from the front of the vehicle and prominent wheel arches, a rising beltline and a high roofline.

Inspired by the new Fiesta, the interior matches the vehicle’s dynamic character with the wing-like form of the upper instrument panel, which connects in a sweeping line to the center console and its high-mounted shifter.

Another intriguing feature on the C-MAX is the versatility of its seven-seat layout. Ford engineers

developed a new seat-folding mechanism for the three second-row seats that enables the center seat to fold quickly and easily under one of the two outboard seats to create a handy walk-through space.

The walk-through allows passengers to access the third row without disturbing the second row’s two outer seats, which is particularly helpful when those are occupied by child safety seats.

Owners have the option of using this convenient 2+2+2 seating

layout or switching to a seven-seater when required.

The second- and third-row seats also have been engineered to easily fold with one hand to create a flat load floor, regardless of how many seats remain in use.

Offering a compact, multi-activity vehicle like the C-MAX is an important part of Ford’s strategy to offer a full range of vehicles in the B- and C-sized segments of the market. From less than 15 percent in 2004, the small car segment now has reached nearly 22 percent of sales in the U.S. market.

“The trend toward small cars in the U.S. is not a one-off, it’s not a

fluke. It’s real, it’s sustainable and it’s a choice of U.S. customers,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development.

“The C-MAX will be great to look at, great to

sit in and great to drive, bringing Ford DNA to a new market segment in the form of an aspirational, fuel-efficient people carrier,” he said.

You can’t miss the regular guest star on Jay Leno’s new weeknight prime time show – it’s a tangerine-colored, electric-powered Ford Focus.

The one-of-a-kind battery-electric Focus is the exclusive

vehicle seen on Leno’s weekly “Green Car Challenge” which this season will pit Hollywood stars, pro athletes and celebrities racing the car against the clock on a closed course behind the NBC studios in Burbank, Calif.

Celebrities who accept the challenge get two laps on the tight 1,100-foot course to set a fast lap time that future guests will try to beat.

The one-of-a-kind electric car is a European Focus ST modified into an electric race car in six weeks by Ford engineers who removed the standard gas engine and fuel tank and installed an electric powertrain. The car also

got Recaro racing seats, a roll cage, a five-point racing harness and appropriate exterior lettering.

The zero-emissions electric Focus, which has a range of nearly 80 miles and nearly as much torque as a 2010 Ford Mustang V-6, foreshadows elements of the electric Focus Ford will begin selling in North America in 2011.

“Having our Focus battery electric vehicle on the show is a great way to demonstrate how fun to drive these cars really can be,” said Lisa Drake, chief engineer, Global Electrification Program.

An idled Ford assembly plant in suburban Detroit is being retooled into one of the nation’s largest renewable energy manufacturing facilities.

The former Wixom Assembly Plant, which once produced Ford Thunderbirds, Lincoln Town Cars and the iconic Ford GT, will be producing high-efficiency solar panels and high-tech systems to store solar and wind energy from projects around the world by 2011.

Ford worked with state and local officials and Clairvoyant Energy of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Xtreme Power of Austin, Texas, on a high-impact, environmentally responsible redevelopment plan for the 52-year-old former auto plant, which closed in 2007.

“The Wixom Assembly Plant served Ford well for half a century and we wanted to ensure it served Michigan well into the future,” said Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford. “I can’t imagine a better way to use this facility – for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.”

Clairvoyant Energy and Xtreme Power plan an initial investment of more than U.S. $725 million to redevelop the sprawling 320-acre site and its 4.7 million square feet of building space. The project is expected to create more than 4,000 direct jobs.

Once completed, Clairvoyant Energy will be able to produce more than 2.5 million solar panels a year at Wixom, potentially replacing the need for one large coal plant every year.

Xtreme Power will use the former auto plant to build large-scale systems to each store up to 10,000 megawatts of solar and wind power for use when needed.

The two companies plan to use approximately half of Wixom’s square footage

and will seek additional “green energy” companies to lease the remaining space.

Clairvoyant’s technology partner, Oerlikon Solar USA, a leader in thin-film solar manufacturing, will establish a regional office at the site.

A renewable energy research and training center also is planned for the site.

Ford joins EPA campaign to help reduce energy useAs part of its ongoing commitment

to environmental sustainability, Ford Motor Company urges its employees and customers to reduce energy use in their homes and cut their CO2 footprints.

Individuals can help by taking the Energy Star Pledge in support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Change the World, Start with Energy Star” campaign. For more information, visit www.energystar.gov.

Each pledge can help Ford meet or exceed its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 14 million pounds.

The Energy Star Pledge includes small, individual energy-saving actions that can collectively make a difference. Among them:

• Changing light bulbs to those with an Energy Star rating.

• Using a programmable thermostat to save energy while asleep or away from home.

• Setting computers and monitors to go into “sleep mode” when away or not in use.

• Purchasing an Energy Star-qualified product, such as home electronics, office products and/or appliances.

• Making sure homes are well-

sealed and insulated.By using less

energy, the amount of fossil fuels burned at power plants to make electricity can be reduced. This means less of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

According to the EPA, if every American household took part in the pledge, more than U.S. $18 billion in annual energy costs could be saved.

Ford Motor Credit Company celebrated 50 years as Ford Motor Company’s global captive finance company in August. It remains a strategic asset to the automaker at a time when neither of Ford’s Detroit rivals holds finance providers any longer, and some lenders have left the business.

“Through 50 years of changing economic, political and business conditions, Ford Credit has provided consistent profits and dividends that support Ford’s product

development, and a reliable source of financing for dealers and customers,” said Mike Bannister, Ford Credit chairman and CEO and executive vice president of Ford Motor Company.

Many lenders clamped

down on credit and got out of some types of auto financing in the credit crunch that hit last year. Ford Credit maintained consistent lending practices. It continued financing a full range of Ford

customers, using its own scoring models that do a much better job of assessing creditworthiness and predicting payment behavior than FICO scores alone.

Along with financing, Ford Credit provides training and consultation for dealers. Ford and Ford Credit work closely on marketing programs to drive new-vehicle sales. Independent studies show customers who finance through Ford Credit are more loyal to Ford.

Safety

Recognizing that driver distraction is a critically important safety issue, Ford recently became the first automaker to support a ban on manually sending text messages on hand-held devices while driving.

Ford said the latest and most complete research shows that manually operating electronic devices while driving substantially increases the risk of accidents.

“Research shows that activity that draws drivers’ eyes away from the road for an extended period while driving, such as text messaging, substantially increases the risks of accidents,” said Jim Vondale, director, Ford’s Automotive Safety Office.

Legislation proposed by Sen. Charles Schumer of New York and three other senators would withhold 25 percent of federal highway money from states that do

not ban texting while driving within two years.

“Studies have shown over and over that texting while driving is dangerous and it’s time to take action to prevent the tragic accidents that result from this activity,” said Schumer. He also said that Ford deserved credit for “stepping up as the first car company to endorse a ban on this dangerous habit.”

The ban would not affect Ford’s in-car communications and entertainment system, called SYNC, which is voice-activated and hands-free. As a safety and convenience feature, SYNC also can read text messages aloud to drivers.

Ford offers SYNC as standard equipment on many models and it is available on others as option for under U.S. $400.

“Ford believes that hands-free, voice-activated technology

significantly reduces that risk by allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road,” said Peter Lawson, vice president, Government Affairs.

The company has also stepped up its efforts to educate teen drivers about the dangers of distracted driving – such as texting while driving – through a new initiative under its nationwide Ford Driving Skills for Life program, which began in 2003.

Along with advanced, hands-on training by top professional instruc-tors to help teens sharpen their driving skills, instructors challenge the students’ concentration using a variety of methods during super-vised drives on controlled courses.

Research shows that driver inattention is a major factor in most auto accidents, more so with novice drivers.

A new national survey shows that 86 percent of U.S. drivers believe hand-held texting while driving is “very dangerous” and 93 percent support a nationwide ban on such texting.

Fourteen states and Washington, D.C. have already banned text messaging while driving.

The distinctively designed Lincoln MKT offers three rows of style, technology, standard content, safety and fuel economy – all wrapped in unique coachwork that features design elements from the classic Lincolns of yesteryear.

Prior to returning to Volvo, Peter Horbury, former executive director of Design, The Americas, conducted an audit of the timeless design cues that make a Lincoln look like a Lincoln.

These cues, and the design language from the exhaustive review of past Lincolns, were first exhibited in the Lincoln MKR concept vehicle in 2007.

“The beauty of the Lincoln design DNA that evolved from the audit is flexibility,” offers Gordon Platto, chief designer, Vehicle Design Programs. “The Lincoln character remains consistent, while the actual designs can differ within the portfolio. For a designer, this is liberating.”

The MKT is the next step in this design progression, which began with the MKR concept and was further explored on the 2009 Lincoln MKS.

It starts with the split-wing grill, inspired by the classic 1941 Continental. Uninterrupted side surfaces recall the “Camelot-era” Lincoln sedans, while the chamfered fender line harkens back to the 1966-1970 Lincoln Continentals. The roof’s substantial C-pillar evokes Lincoln limousines and signifies strength and safety.

The MKT’s “zero offset” bumpers make graceful design statements front and rear. The power-operated rear liftgate is constructed from magnesium and aluminum, making it light, fuel efficient, strong – and unique to the MKT.

Thin, full-width taillamps represent another signature design cue, a consistent look that says Lincoln in a tasteful, distinctive and highly visible way.Interior details

In the cabin, the goal was to provide business class luxury through all three rows of available seating.

“From the real stitching on the seats and door panels to the leather surfaces, we’ve tried to infuse MKT with the highest quality materials available,” said Platto. “The craftsmanship and quality of

materials we’ve used really raise the bar for the Lincoln brand.”

Every touch point has been crafted and trimmed to reflect tactile quality, from the leather-wrapped shifter to the stitched instrument panel crown. The roof’s A- and B-pillars are wrapped in harmonizing cloth, soft to the touch.

Genuine wood appliqués adorn the instrument and door panels. A full complement of courtesy lights can be augmented with standard ambient lighting and jewel-like instrument cluster features a message center and LED white lighting.

The center stack offers touch screen control of audio, climate and compass, with available voice-activated navigation. The stack flows gracefully into the console, offering a leather trimmed adjustable armrest and covered storage.Second-row options

Second-row seating was designed to combine the aesthetics, attention to detail, and craftsmanship of the first row with the choice of two different configurations. A 60/40 split folding rear seat with heated seats is standard and second row heated/cooled twin captain’s chairs are available.

These fold and tumble second row seats can be specified with an available rear center console and with an optional rear console refrigerator.

With best-in-class legroom, the second-row seating also is offered with trimmed footrests to

underscore the emphasis on business class accommodations while the third-row seating sets the MKT apart from the Lincoln MKX and underlines why it was brought to the showroom.

All in all, it’s a bold look forward and one infused with a timeless heritage.

Crash avoidance technologies earn Lincoln MKT a ‘Top Safety Pick’

The all-new 2010 Lincoln MKT three-row luxury crossover has received a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

MKT offers a high level of crash protection – including state-of-the-art side air bags designed to deploy up to 30 percent earlier than traditional air bag systems – while offering a segment-first, forward collision warning system as part of Lincoln’s push into new crash-avoidance technologies.

MKT offers an array of driver-awareness features – including a first-in-class Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert .

Ford Motor Company has more IIHS “Top Safety Pick” ratings than any other automaker and more U.S. government five-star safety ratings than any brand.

Page 14: 2011 Ford Super Duty debuts

Unveiled in September at the State Fair of Texas, the 2011 Ford Super Duty boasts all-new, Ford-built powertrains and options for hard-working customers who expect results in the most demanding situations.

“The new 2011 Super Duty offers them a truck with best-in-class towing and payload, all-new powertrains and even more capability than ever to help them do their jobs,” said Mark Fields, president, The Americas.

Ford’s F-Series has been the best-selling line of trucks in the U.S. for 32-straight years and the new Super Duty further burnishes the “Built Ford Tough” legacy.

Behind its massive new chrome “vice-like” grille and under the new inverted

power dome hood lurks the 2011 model’s new diesel and gasoline engines.

They include a Ford-designed, Ford-engineered and Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V-8 turbocharged diesel engine as well as a new 6.2-liter V-8 gas engine and a new transmission for both.

With the increased power, the 2011 Super Duty offers increased towing and payload capability that extend its best-in-class rating.

It also offers more towing from inside the bed with the first-ever factory-installed fifth wheel set up with a warranted substructure attached directly to the frame.

In addition to increased towing

Inside the cab, the Super Duty offers a flow-through console that stretches from the instrument panel to the backseat, brimming with large, customizable and versatile storage.

The larger console provides room for two HVAC ducts to the backseat along with a lockable main storage bin that can hold a laptop or notebooks to make the Super Duty an office on wheels.

The console also has map pockets on both sides, a two-level front storage compartment with four removable cup holders, a standard 110-volt inverter and socket and 12-volt powerpoints including one with a notch so cords can pass through with the armrest lid closed.

Super Duty’s seats feature improved comfort, support and materials and offer available

10-way power adjustments and lockable underseat storage. The front seats can also be heated and cooled.

The available industry-exclusive Ford Work Solutions™ also lets customers track their tools and stay connected with their business from the job site.

A new available 4.2-inch LCD Productivity Screen delivers an array of information and an off-road message center has been added as well.

On the road, other drivers should be able to easily spot the new truck. Its new grille has “Super Duty” stamped onto its

upper surface, centered by an iconic Blue Oval that’s a whopping 13 inches across.

“It’s the biggest Ford oval anywhere except at the top of World Headquarters,” quipped Brad Richards, exterior design manager.

New diesel engine

The new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged “quiet diesel” was designed, engineered and built in-house by Ford teams. It features:

• the first use of a compacted graphite iron engine block in a vehicle of this size in North America. It’s stronger than cast iron and weighs less.

• a unique inboard exhaust and outboard intake system for better throttle response, heat transfer and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

• an improved single turbocharger that reduces NVH and works more efficiently.

• the ability to run on “greener” B20 fuel (20 percent biodiesel).

New gas engine

The Super Duty’s new 6.2-liter V-8 gas engine delivers more torque and horsepower than the outgoing model and class-leading fuel economy. It features:

• a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) with roller-rocker shafts.

• dual-equal variable cam timing.• two spark plugs per cylinder to

more efficiently burn the fuel-air mixture.

• dual knock sensors and better engine crankcase breathing and efficiency.

New transmission

Both engines are mated to the all-

new 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed transmission for increased torque and horsepower.

The new trans features enhanced Tow Haul with integrated engine exhaust braking, SelectShift capability and the first application of Live Drive Power Take Off (PTO) in a Super Duty-class vehicle.

The PTO option allows the transmission to power such equipment as snowplows, lifts, cement mixers and dump trucks.

But wait – there’s more:Also on the 2011 Super Duty:

• Trailer Sway Control integrated with Roll Stability Control (RSC)

• Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control™

• Electronic Locking Differential

• Standard tire pressure monitoring system

• Optional side air bags and air curtains

• XL, XLT, Lariat and King Ranch® models

North America

EcoBoost engine technology expands into I-4s in 2010By Andrew Stoy

Early next year, all-new four-cylinder EcoBoost™ engines will make their global debut, marking a milestone in Ford’s strategy to deliver greater fuel economy to millions of customers.

The new 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected I-4 engines will be available on most vehicles in North America, Europe and Australia, including midsize and large vehicles.

The new engines will deliver up to a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy and a 20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional, larger engines with similar power.

By 2013, more than 90 percent of Ford’s North American lineup will

be available with EcoBoost and nearly 80 percent of the company’s global nameplates will have an EcoBoost option.

“With this next phase of our plan, we will expand our EcoBoost engine offerings, adding higher-volume, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines to the premium V-6 engine we currently offer in North America,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development.

Currently, the EcoBoost V-6 is offered on the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO and Ford Flex and the 2010 Lincoln MKS and MKT.

Under the plan, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 would replace

naturally aspirated V-8 engines; a 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 would replace naturally aspirated V-6 engines and a 1.6-liter EcoBoost I-4 would replace naturally aspirated larger I-4 engines.

The 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 will be launched in North America in 2010 and arrive on larger European Ford products.

By 2013, global EcoBoost volume throughout the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle family is expected to be 1.3 million units, with up to 750,000 sales coming from North America alone.

Volunteers helped make a difference

More than 10,000 employees and retirees in 42 countries took time to help create a better world during Ford’s fourth annual Global Week of Caring in September.

Putting in more than 35,000 hours across six continents, Ford Volunteer Corps painted an orphanage in Cambodia, repaired a homeless shelter in Spain, collected clothing for needy children in the Dominican Republic and took part in a six-day project to benefit the disabled and elderly in South Korea.

In the U.S., the Ford Global Week of Caring was anchored by an Accelerated Action Day on Sept. 11 that focused on community building projects selected in 17 states.

On Nov. 10, Ford MODEL Teams of volunteers will assist veterans and their families in a special Accelerated Action Day.

History

On a clear September morning in 1955, two Ford Fairlanes crashed into each other just outside Detroit.

Both cars were badly damaged but the occupants were uninjured – they were early versions of today’s sophisticated crash-test dummies.

Those who witnessed the crash at the Dearborn test track were attending the National Safety Forum, an unprecedented two-day event that showcased Ford’s revolutionary “Lifeguard Design” vehicle safety features.

While safety is a crucial automotive attribute today, it wasn’t always so. In the 1950s, much of the public was reluctant to consider the possibility of a crash

and that made automakers reluctant to talk about crash safety.

Many believed it was better to be “thrown clear” in a crash even though a Cornell University study had shown a possible five-fold increase in fatal injuries if a passenger was ejected from the car.

With their hard metal surfaces and protruding knobs, car interiors were also part of the problem so Ford engineers in the early 1950s had begun to think about how to “package the passenger.”

In the most exciting part of the forum, engineers staged two crashes, towing one car into another using an instrument-laden van tethered to the car by an

electronic cable. Sensors and high-speed cameras captured each tiny moment of the crashes.

Along for the ride were FERD 1 and FERD 2, two early crash-test dummies, named after the Ford Engineering Research Department.

This and other exhibits showed the benefits of dished steering wheels, safety door latches, seat belts, padded dashboards and breakaway rearview mirrors.

It was the first time a car company had designed a vehicle’s interior to enhance safety.

The “Lifeguard” safety features were prominent in 1956 and Ford even sold the options at below cost.

Ford pioneers auto safetyBy Marguerite Moran

In 1955, Ford’s National Safety Forum promoted its early safety features, including seat belts, a padded dash and improved door latches.

Ford Figo unveiled in India for local and export markets

Designed and engineered to compete in the heart of India’s small car domestic market, the new sub-B-car-sized Ford Figo hatchback was unveiled in late September.

A colloquial Italian term for “cool,” the Figo draws on technology from the Ford Fiesta and will launch in early 2010.

It will be built at Ford India’s recently expanded plant near Chennai (formerly Madras) near the southern coast of India and also will be available for export to other international markets.

Brazilian employees aid this year’s flood victims

Employees of Ford’s Sao Bernardo do Campo plant recently teamed up to collect 11 tons of donations to aid flood victims in the country’s northeast region.

The donations were delivered to victims in Sao Luiz, Maranhao, one of 320 cities affected by torrential rain, which left more than 125,000 people homeless earlier this year.

Besides basic supplies, the donations included 5,000 pieces of clothing, 1,200 hygiene items and more than 1,000 liters of drinking water.

Argentina publications applaud Ford brands

The Blue Oval is taking home awards in Argentina, where two different publications have honored Ford brands.

A readers’ poll in Selecciones magazine, published by Reader’s Digest, ranked Ford tops in two categories – Top of Mind Trusted Brand and Most Trusted Brand in Cars – in Argentina.

A poll published by the national newspaper Clarin, which has the largest circulation in the country, also named Ford the Best Automotive Brand in the country.

New Ford car plant will be Ford’s third in China

Ford’s successful joint venture in China – Changan Ford Mazda Automobile – is building a new, state-of-the-art, highly flexible car plant in Chongqing.

Scheduled for completion in 2012, the plant will manufacture the next-generation Ford Focus and will be able to produce 150,000 cars a year, initially.

The investment of U.S. $490 million is a part of Ford’s aggressive expansion strategy in the Asia Pacific region and is the automaker’s third car plant in China.

Share, sales rise in Europe

For the third month in a row, Ford of Europe increased its year-over-year sales volume in August, selling 72,800 new vehicles in its 19 main markets.

Led by the Fiesta, Focus and Ka, left, Ford’s August market share also rose by 0.1 percent to 8.1 percent – the highest since August 1998.

This was the eighth-consecutive month of sales increases and further strengthened Ford as Europe’s number two brand behind Volkswagen.

Festivas rock – who knew?The all-volunteer

fire and rescue department in Bat Cave, N.C., drives a lot of miles.

And 11 of its members do so in Ford Festivas, seen here lined up in front of the fire hall. The Ford-badged subcompacts were sold new in the U.S. from 1988 to 1993.

Volunteer Bill Vitti says the fleet of Festivas has a total of more than 2.4 million miles on their odometers; the one with the most mileage has rolled past 326,000 miles.

“They have such good reliability and good gas mileage and they’re easy to work on,” says Vitti, a Ford design retiree.

Another bonus in hilly Bat Cave? “There’s not a lot of parking around here so you can park three of them where you’d park one big car,” says Vitti.

If you ask Keith Beck, he’ll tell you he’s pretty satisfied with his Ford F-350 truck.

As a recreational vehicle transporter, he often drives 500 miles a day in it – towing 22-40-foot campers from where they’re made in Indiana to dealers in Minnesota. “Elkhart (Ind.) is 565 miles away and I can do that in a day with no problem,” he says.

Bought new in 2003, his white, four-door long box with its 7.3-liter turbo diesel now has more than 830,000 on it – and Beck racked up more than a million miles on his two earlier F-350s.

“I love them, there’s no doubt about that. They’re great trucks,” he says.

“ For drivers looking for a no-compromise sedan that looks and drives like a ‘normal’ car, Ford’s Fusion and Milan hybrids stand head and shoulders above the rest.”

– Adam Aston, BusinessWeek.com

“ The Lincoln MKX is a nicely executed crossover. Classy and capable, it offers room and comfort in a well-dressed, all-weather package.”

– Dan Lyons, Chicago Sun-Times

“ …the Ford F-150 Raptor is the most unique SVT vehicle next to the Ford GT supercar. Maybe it’s time we define a new category of vehicle: the supertruck.”

– Mike Sutton, Car and Driver

Coolest CobraAlmost 45 years since it made racing history,

this 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe made history again, selling for the highest price ever paid at public auction for an American car – U.S. $7.25 million.

The car was one of six built by Carroll Shelby to challenge Ferrari in the GT class. Driven by Bob Bondurant, it clinched the World Manufacturers Championship against Ferrari in a race at Reims, France – on the appropriately American holiday of July 4, 1965. Bondurant also drove the car across the auction block in August.

With an experimental body designed by Pete Brock, the car got its name when it won its first race, in Daytona, Florida, in 1964.

Its winning bid bettered the previous record for an American car, a rare supercharged Shelby Cobra Super Snake, set in 2007.
