    The responsibility of companies, corporations and institutionsto their stakeholders is more important today than ever befo-re. This is because the lack of responsibility in so many of ourlargest companies in recent years has thrown the whole issueof market freedom into question.

    Even the limited version of responsibility, beloved by MiltonFriedman, where the only responsibility of companies is totheir shareholders, has been undermined by the crash of sha-res, bonds, titles and, in some cases, the total loss of pension

    funds and savings from Wall Street to Iceland, and from Anti-gua to the City of London.

    Some commentators are trying to return us to the hopelesslyout-of-date Milton Friedman view of business but the conclu-sion remains, that social responsibility has been, is and willcontinue to be crucial to the future prosperity and integrity ofour businesses.

    Course Description

    The course covers some of the main aspects of CSR and will provide partici-pants with a broad understanding of the field. It serves as a precursor to ourgraduate CSR course that extends over January to June each year. Thecourse is the equivalent of two modules in the full course (those on introduc-

    tion to CSR, CSR and international development and CSR and supply chains).

    Objectives

    It will consist of:

    Understanding the different aspects of CSR with the aim to make it practi-cal in different strategic and operational environments with an emphasis onemerging markets

    Acquainting participants with the best practice of CSR and sustainable de-velopment decision-making tools and analytical instruments that institu-tions across the world use or are likely to use in the future

    Promoting introductory CSR skills of individuals so that they may start, orcontinue to, play an important role in making the concept even more wide-spread than it is today.

    Audience

    It will address the needs of professionals in Private companies, NGOs, Interna-tional organizations and Governments who are currently involved in CSR, orwould like to be involved in CSR, and wish to make the concept of CSR appli-cable in their institution. Preference is given to professionals with working ex-perience.

    Organisation

    The diploma will have an introductory e-learning module followed by 5 modulestaught over six days at the University of Geneva. Each module will last 8 hourseach day with optional evening lectures and activities.

    Each module will have a minimum number of fifteen students. Refreshments will be provided at appropriate times.

    WEDNESDAY JUNE 1st Preparatory Module and E-contact16.00-18.30 Geneva Time

    Prof. Michael HOPKINS, Course Director, A reading list will be prepared. In mostcases the material will be made available online. Participants will also be sent acopy of Michaels book CSR and International Development Is Business theSolution (Earthscan, New York and London, 2008, reprinted). A webinar will beheld in early June over 2 hours to discuss with students the programme and pre-paratory reading.

    The modules below are subject to minor changes since we try to make thecourse fit in with student interests as much as possible and we can (and do)bring in other specialists not listed. Our intention is always to make the coursework interesting and useful with as much student-teacher interaction as possi-ble.

    Diploma awarded

    An Attestation of Participation will be delivered by the Faculty of Economic andSocial Sciences of the University of Geneva to students attending the SummerCourse.Students successfully completing the required examinations will receive an At-testation representing 7 credits (European Credit Transfer and AccumulationSystem).
