In the spring of 1980, brothers Mark and PaulSmith planted their first Fraser Fir Christmastrees on two acres near their parents’ home.Their goal was to grow perfect Christmas treesfor their friends and family. Now, over 30 yearslater, those two acres have grown into over 600acres, and their customer base has changedsomewhat. What has not changed is theircommitment to growing and deliveringPremium trees.

To Mark and Paul, growing perfect Christmastrees is as much an art as it is a science. Each treemust be trimmed, sheared, and essentiallysculpted each year of its life. Paul oftencompares the sculpting of a Christmas tree to thecareful and thoughtful trimming of a bonsai tree.Each cut and each snip is done with the futuregrowth and ultimate shape of the tree in mind.The science behind growing was what initiallyattracted Mark and Paul to growing Christmastrees. Both graduated from the University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel Hill with Chemistrydegrees, so they understand the process, literally,from the ground up. The soil is inarguably themost important part of growing dense, beautifultrees with deep color and aroma. Their attentionto the nutrient and pH balance of the soil istireless, as is their effort to most cost effectivelymanipulate those variables.

Just like any business, its all about “location,location, location.” Nestled in the mountains ofwestern North Carolina, Cool Springs Nursery

raises their Fraser Firs in its only native habitat,only miles from the native seed source. Theysimply do not grow as well anywhere else.

Mark and Paul are proud of their fields ofbeautiful NC Fraser Fir Christmas trees; butthey are not satisfied unless each tree is as freshas it was when it left the field when it is finallytaken home and decorated. Cool SpringsNursery has developed a reputation forconsistent quality, on time delivery, accuratecounts, generous height, and tireless customerservice. To ensure the fruits of their labor are deliveredfresh and on time, Mark and Paul are hands-onowner, managers. They spend countless hoursnegotiating with trucking companies andbrokers in order to secure reliable service at thelowest possible price. For customers that orderless than a full truck load, Cool Springs Nurserywill arrange for a truck to be shared with othercustomers in your area. This maximizes theefficiency and decreases the shipping costs. Forinternational customers, Cool Springs Nurseryhas many years of experience shipping treesabroad. This is not an easy process as it involvesspecial treatment of the trees before and afterharvesting; also certain documentation must beobtained. Mark and Paul have extensiveexperience and knowledge in this area and willhelp you through each step, ensuring that yourtrees arrive fresh and in a timely manner.

The USDA has extensive criteria for the grading of Christmastrees. The criteria are based primarily on shape, density, and

“flaws.” Flaws are broken down into “minor defects” and“noticeable defects,” the difference being that “minor defects”cannot be seen from more than 8 feet away, while “noticeable

defects” are visible at distances greater than 8 feet. In all cases, CoolSprings Nursery grades their trees more stringently than the USDA

requires. Cool Springs delivers trees that will put your businessahead of the competition.

Consistent conical shape; medium to heavy density; three faceswith no more than 2 combined minor defects; face opposite of theface without defect must not have more than one noticeable defect.
