for ages 8-18

Never played football Youth Coach for 14 seasons Helper -1 season Defensive assistant - 1 season Defensive coordinator - 2 seasons Head Coach – 10 seasonsWas asked in 2008 to help with Holley

Hawks and be JV Head Coach2009 & 2010 Holley Hawks Offensive

coordinator

Who is Jim Barg?

Page 3: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

You better be hardheaded & thick-skinned to run this offense

4th and 2 you better call power or wedge and feel good about it

“3 yards and a cloud of dust” is not a cute saying it is a way of life

If your offense is on the field theirs isn’tYou need wedge, if you have any success

with wedge at all it will make your power & sweep better, without wedge you have ½ an offense

My Philosophy or rules

Page 4: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

In 10 games we rushed for 2800 yards37 rushing TD’s6 passing TD’sWe had 7 different backs start during the

season because of injuriesWe had 8 different backs scoreIn our final game we rushed for 239 yards

& scored 14 points in a losing effort against a very tough team that had held all opponents scoreless

Holley Hawks 2010 season

Page 5: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

I ran double wing in 2003 because the single wing’s direct snap scared me,

Ran single wing from then onSells “Toughness” to playersKeep your defense off the field by

controlling the clockDefenses tend to key motion, very easy to

break that key with “Under” play

Why the Dog - direct snap double wing formation?

Page 6: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Pop Warner thought it was a good secondary formation and I have seen many coaches run a direct snap double wing formation as their first formation or as a secondary formation and it was very successful for them

Almost all indirect snap Double Wing running & passing plays can be run or at least used for ideas

Very easy to run spin

What makes the direct snap Double Wing special?

Page 7: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

More powerful then indirect snap double wing in my humble opinion (extra real blocker) I know, I know, QB blocks (HARUMPH) but very few QB’s can do everything they need to do (spin, toss ball then continue to make an effective block)

Simple blocking schemes I have run this offense successfully with SAB

& GOD blocking and I know GDB works also

What makes the direct snap Double Wing special?

Page 8: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

My teams have gone 41-14-4 with balanced line direct snap double wing & single wing

While at East Rochester we were a town of 7,000 playing teams from towns 3-6 times bigger, we never had the biggest, strongest or fastest players on the field

At Holley I had players who hadn’t won a game in 6 years of youth football

My JV team went 3-3-1 in first year of DSDWVarsity went 15-4 in 2 seasons of DSDW

What makes the direct snap Double Wing special?

Page 9: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

You can motion to bunch formationsYou can get 4 receivers out “Right Now” and

5 if you send the blocking back out (who is almost never covered)

What makes the direct snap Double Wing special?

All the power of single wing both ways with using motion to get backside wing in position

I think motion hypnotizes the defense and they step to the motion and this makes the “Under” or counter even better

My film might not match with play diagramsA football play involves 22 people so to think

every player will do the same thing every play is not reasonable

I tell my players that if we get a accidental double team on the defensive end that is ok

I try to let my players think for themselves so if the wing is blocking the D-end the 4 back goes to the corner

First “Bad Hat” overrides any rule

Before we get to the plays

• “Dog” basics: zero splits, Linemen's Head should be at the Centers waist

•1back is 4 ½ yds back directly behind center

•4back is 1 yd behind the line with his left foot on the centers right foot (he can sneak back a little when he is ball carrier)

•2 and 3 backs are angled toward the TE 1 yard X 1 yard so they just barely can’t touch tight end's hip if they reach out

•Line and 4 Back are in a 3 pt. stance

Motions

Le LT LG C RG ReRT

•Your aiming point for spin is the hip

of the 1 back When the ball is snapped you are

still in motion

•Go into motion on “Ready”

Spin is a motion

Page 15: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

“Down Ready Set”

Line goes into 3 point on “DOWN”

All motion starts on the “R” of “Ready”

Ball is snapped on “SET”

Unless we go on 2 then the motion man stops and 1 back calls out

“READY SET” again and play starts on 2nd “SET”

Cadence

Page 16: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Domino Blocking For 6 Power1) Center takes two power steps toward backside of play

2) Play side Guard uses Center’s outside shoulder as landmark Do not let anyone thru A Gap

3) Play side Tackle uses Guard’s outside shoulder as landmark Do not let anyone thru B Gap

4) Play side Tight End uses Tackles outside shoulder as landmark Do not let anyone thru C Gap

5) Play side Wing goes to corner

6) 4 back kicks out first man to show

7) Backside Guard looks for first man trying to cross his face

8) Backside Tackle looks inside-straight then outside HIT first “BAD HAT”

9) Backside TE Shoeshine's to cover pullers

• If there is no one to block, be patient, someone will come to you. Do not let anyone get in between you and your landmark. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS YOUR FACE

• FAST FEET, GET TO YOUR LANDMARK

• Weld your shoulders together E T N T E

Reverse for 5 rule

Page 17: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

When blocking with SAB I tell my 1 back to catch the snap and then aim/run at the play side butt cheek of the center

1 back is to run the “Wall”He is also told to get a hand on the back of

the puller and follow him throughBe patient let the blockers do their jobThe pullers and the 4 back are all taught the

same thing follow the SAB wall to your block

Reach Blocking For 8 Sweep

All linemen except guards reach to play side trying to get to outside armpit

Guards pull looking to get up field and establish edge as fast as possible

4 back kicks corner out unless he can log him Play side wing after helping TE with DE, he goes to

outside linebacker Opposite wing goes in motion then lead blocks for 1

back, picking up first bad hat he sees 1 back reads block on DE, If DE comes up hard cut in

under him then back out towards sideline, if he stays on LOS go around him outside

Page 22: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Pullers need to get downfield as fast as possible to create an edge

4 back either logs or kicks out corner it is his choice

Running back reads block and decides which way to cut or outrun defenders to sideline

Coaching Tips for Sweep

Page 23: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Dog Ray 18

• Line blocks 8 sweep

•4 – kicks out corner unless he can log him

•3 – Ray motion, lead thru looking outside to in

•2 – Help with DE then up to linebackers

•1 – catch snap, run sweep if defender comes up field hard dip inside then back out otherwise run hard until you can cut it up

Page 26: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Back in motion needs to step forward then plant and get to hole

Blockers need to hold blocks a little longer than usual

1 back blocks backside pursuit Back getting ball needs to let ball come to him

he DOES NOT go deeper to get ball

Coaching Tips for under

Page 27: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Dog Lou 136 Under

• Line blocks 6 rule

•4 – Counter step, kick out DE

•3 – take handoff and run power

•2 – Lou motion, stop go back lead block

•1 – catch snap, run power, give handoff to 3 back with your right hand, block LDE

3 24

Page 31: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

The 1 back needs to decide by his third step what he is going to do run or throw

He doesn’t need to throw by third step he just needs to know what he is going to do

If a defender comes up hard 1 back can stop step up and throw or cut under and run sweep

Flats receiver is first option if he is open throw the ball to him

Receivers are read shallow to deep

1 back needs to stop forward motion then jump & throw ball

TE needs to block out defendersLine has to cut to get defenders hands down

so they can’t swat at ball

Coaching Tips for Jump pass

Page 36: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Dog Ray Jump pass

• Line aggressive pass block

•RTE – releases just in front of linebackers, turns using his body to block out defenders and looks for ball inside

•4 – protects to play side

•3 – Ray motion, protect backside

•2 – fill for TE

•1 – catch snap, run like power, stop, jump and throw to TE

Spin Cycle

Keys to spin cycle Center snap Correct alignment / depth Timing / mesh – players will work it out Reach, Take, Fake Coordination of timing with blockers and

ball carrier Carrying out fakes

Page 39: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Spin Cycle

Start with feet about 8 inches apart, Spin to the left - first step is right foot going just past midline, second step is with the left foot and ends up being perpendicular to the LOS , third step is with right foot and ends up parallel to the LOS more than half of which is past midline, fourth step heads to hole with the left foot. Pretend ball has a fence post thru the middle and you are spinning around the post

IMPORTANT- 1 back is to stay low while spinning, it is my belief that the spin series is the most deceptive series in football but it works best if there is a good snap and the backs that don’t get the ball give very good fakes like they have the ball every time.

Fake, Fake, Fake every time by every back involved in the spin, that is what sells the series.

Page 40: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Spin CycleSpin is called as a motion

IMPORTANT - The 1 back is the only spinning back and we always go the same way. Every time we spin it will be exactly the same actions by the 1 back, 2 back and 3 back3 BACK – Go into rip motion heading to hip of 1

back and on snap run in back of 1 back, then let 2 back inside of you before you cut to 6 hole

2 BACK – On snap run hard to mesh going inside of 3 back and outside of 1 back

1 BACK – Receive snap spin and run or fake trap. The 1 back has to understand that if anything goes wrong on the spin he is to fall on the ball, run to the hole that was called or run straight ahead trying to get as many yards as he can

Page 41: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

Spin Cycle

We Reach, Take, Fake instead of handing off. I think this method protects the ball better than the hand-off and the defense has a harder time finding the ball.

When the 2 or 3 backs are not running the ball they fake sweep

Le LT LG C RG ReRT

1

3 24

Page 42: 2011 Conclave Presentation Package

When 3 back is not getting ball he can go deeper so the 2 back has easier mesh

With SAB the backs need to make quick cuts after getting ball

It has been my experience that when the 4 back is behind the right guard the 43X is a better play than the 44

4 back needs to stay lowSpin backs need to give good fakes and be

ready to get hit“Georgia” means backside guard goes wrong

way
