The municipal sanitary sewer system is a system ofunderground pipes that transport sewage from homes andbusinesses to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The sewage is treated at the plant and the clean treatedwater is sent into Kempenfelt Bay.
In order to maintain a properly functioning transportationand treatment system, the following materials CAN NOTbe disposed of down sinks and toilets:
• Disposablediapers• Sanitarynapkinsorplastictamponapplicators• Hairfrombrushesorcombs• Newspapers,ragsorcloth• Anyplasticmaterials• Kitchengrease• Oil,fuelsandotherhazardousmaterials• Sumppumpwater• Babywipes• Q-tips
The municipal storm sewer system collects rainwater andsurface water run off from roads, lawns and parking lots.It is discharged into neighbouring creeks and catchbasins;it is then sent into Kempenfelt Bay.
Since the water is NOT treated, it is important that anywaste materials (including, but not limited to yard wasteand hazardous waste) are NOT disposed of intocatchbasins or creeks.
The sanitary sewer connection in your home is your responsibility. You can assist in the trouble-free operation of the sanitary sewer by ensuring household items such as cooking
grease, fat, oil, food, debris, garbage or other foreign objects do not enter
the sewer system.

While you areparticipating in Barrie’s special events, shopping downtownor enjoying Barrie’s beautiful parks, please remember to usethese bins to recycle your beverage containers. Throughoutthe City, in parks, along curbside and in other public spaces, you will find a variety of recycling containers. Mostrecycling/garbage containers are emptied on a weekly basison the collection day for that particular area. When usingthese containers, please ensure that your materials areplaced in the appropriate slots/bins, as mixing garbage andrecyclables together will contaminate the recyclablematerials and reduce their value.

adopt-a-park or trail programThe City of Barrie Adopt-a-Park or Trail program has been established as a community service program for volunteers to assist in keeping our parks safe from vandalism and free from garbage. It is a way for environmentally conscious residents to make a personal contribution to a cleaner community and to take pride in our parks and trails.Volunteers organize park clean-ups; patrol the park for garbage, report vandalism to the City’s Operations Centre. If you would like to become involved please call the Engineering Department at 705-739-4207 or visit www.barrie.ca to enroll online.
the arboretumBarrie’s Arboretum is located on 14 acres at the North End of Sunnidale Park. It was established by the Barrie’s Garden Club in 1974 and consists of a wide variety of trees, shrubs and vines. The Trans Canada Trail allows for easy access to most of the site.Come and Explore!• The Drought Tolerant Demonstration Gardens and Butterfly Garden where colourful perennials, annuals and shrubs attract birds, insects and butterflies in all stages of their development. • The Tranquility Garden where benches and a soothing water feature provide a quiet refuge for rest and contemplation. • The Lilac Dell with over 60 specimens bursting alive with fragrance and colour in late May and June.• The Barrie Metals Pavilion is a landscaped shelter that provides seating and a small amphitheatre for outdoor education about the extraordinary history of Sunnidale Park.
community gardeningGarden Plot rentals are available for the Sunnidale Community Garden, located along Coulter Street. Choose between an individual plot (1.5m x 4.5m) or the Community Plot (recommended for beginners who want to learn more about gardening). Gardeners sign a short rental contract along with the $22.60 rental fee (includes HST) for the 2011 season. Please note gardeners are responsible for their own water supply. You can pick up a Community Garden Policy, Rental Contract and garden location at City Hall on the 6th floor, reception desk or get it online at www.barrie.ca or call 705-739-4207 for more information.
Did you know …. Vehicle recycling builds trails in our community! Give your vehicle a new life by donating it to Huronia Trails and Greenways’ vehicle recycling program “Help Trails Grow” and invest in a trail initiative in your community.
• You benefit by receiving a charitable tax receipt for $50 • You benefit by having your old vehicle towed away for free • Your community benefits from a cash contribution to your local trail initiative • You help clean up your environment
How to Donate Your Old Vehicle1. Phone (705) 728-4110 or 800-461-1718. 2. Identify yourself as an HTG vehicle donor. 3. Arrangements will be made to pick up the vehicle.
The automobile ranks at the top of recyclable items! The automotive recycling industry plays a necessary and crucial role in the effective and ecological disposal of inoperative motor vehicles. Automotive recyclers deal in the recycling of trucks, buses, motorcycles, snowmobiles, RV’s, and farm equipment. This includes the dismantling of vehicles for parts resale and material recycling.
Little known facts about old vehicle as• By weight, 75% of an average car’s content is recycled or reused.• Parts can be refurbished and sold for up to 50% less than new parts. • Reusing and recycling old vehicles saves energy. • Recycling reduces the risk of contaminating the environment. • Reusing & recycling old vehicles creates jobs.
To encourage waste reduction values in education, the City
of Barrie constructed an Environmental Interpretive Berm
and Education Centre on the isolation berm between the
education to students and summer camp groups within
the community. Where possible, salvaged or products with
a recycled content were used in the construction of the
Interpretive Berm and Education Centre.
Through funding received from the federal, provincial and
municipal governments, under the COMRIF program, the City
of Barrie was able to successfully complete these projects.
