September 2011
Welcome back everyone; I hope you have all
had a great summer!
For myself, I spent a lot of time this summer
relaxing with family & friends, reading, canning
and learning. I nurtured my soul, my body and
my mind! I look forward to continue nurturing
myself with all the good things happening in our
club.
We are entering another busy time for Desk and
Derrick Clubs. Convention is right around the
corner and St. Louis, MO is offering up many
ways to nurture ourselves. The field trips and
seminars are sure to nurture the mind. The
social events, the chance to visit with and learn
from the members of other clubs will nurture
the soul and probably our waistlines as well!
As soon as we return from convention, we start
the 2012 club election process. In October, we
announce the Board nominations, in November
we hold the elections, and in December the
Installation of the new Board. Now is the
chance for you to nurture yourself. Seriously
consider running for one of Board positions or
working on one of the committees. The
experience will truly nurture your body, mind,
and soul!
The ‘Calendar Girls’ have continued to work
diligently on 60th Anniversary calendar and by
the time you read this our order should be
ready to go! Please contact Sharon McClare if
you have not already placed your order.
In addition, the Venue Committee has been
hard at work researching possible sites for
2012. We will present our findings to the Board
in September and to membership in October.
Our final fundraising event this year will be a
silent auction that will be held at the December
Christmas meeting. Details will be announced
at a later date. If you have any items available
for auction, please contact Linda Topolinsky or
myself.
The Education/Field Trip Committee is currently
working on field trips to Ensign/Opsco and
Mostar Directional, so watch your emails or the
next bulletin for details!
Our Program Committee is also hard at work
lining up speakers for this fall. Please see the
monthly dinner invitation for September’s
Speaker.
The Communications Committee has been busy
gathering articles for this month’s publication of
Mountain Messages. As usual they have done
us proud.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our next
dinner meeting on Wednesday, September 14th.
You are all in for a treat as our Vice President
will be nurturing her body, mind and soul as she
will be acting chairperson for this month!
Please come out and show your support for
Debb!

Question of the Month Congratulations to Theresa Shultz for being the first
to email the correct answer to last July’s question.
“What are four types of mobile, offshore drilling units
(MODU)?” Her answer was: submersibles, jack-ups,
semi-submersibles, and drill ships. Theresa wins a
$5.00 gift card for Tim Horton’s. This month I am
going to change up the process a little and will accept
all correct answers in the first 48 hours after delivery
of the bulletin and make a draw for the prize. So
don’t hold back, send in your answers asap.
Member Changes All member information is for our members’ only

Please refer to the Address Change Form

Have you ever written a long letter or document and
discovered that you spelled someone’s name wrong?
Or remember that you spelled a word wrong but
don’t remember where? It can be time consuming to
say the least. But this is where “Find and Replace”
comes in handy.
In Word 2003, you will click on Edit, the either Find or
Replace commands. In Word 2007, in the Home tab,
the icons can be found to the far right upper menu.
You can click on either Find or Replace icons.
Now the “Find” command will only find a word that
you would like to locate in the document, but the real
power is in the “Replace” command. When you click
on the Replace command, you will see a pop up box
similar to the one here. If you want to find the
misspelled name, type it into the “Find what” field.
Then type the correctly spelled name into the
“Replace with” field.
You then have to decide if you want to replace all of
them sight unseen (Replace All button) or do you
want to see each instance (Find Next button) and
then decide at that point if you want to replace it
(Replace button). This tip can be a life saver in some
instances, and it is a good thing to know in any event!

Disclaimer:
The following information is taken directly from the
Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers’
Website. CAPP is the voice of Canada’s upstream oil
and natural gas industry – representing companies
that produce about 90% of Canada’s oil and gas.
For the next few months, I will share statistical and
glossary information gleamed from their website in
an effort to fulfill our organizational purpose of
education.
Glossary of Terms
Development Well: A well drilled within the proved
area of an oil or gas reservoir to the depth of a
stratigraphic horizon known to be productive. If the
well is completed for production, it is classified as an
oil or gas development well. If the well is not
completed for production and is abandoned, it is
classified as a dry development hole.
Service Well: A well drilled or completed for the
purpose of supporting production in an existing field.
Wells of this class are drilled for the following specific
purposes: gas injection (natural gas, propane,
butane), water injection, air injection, steam
injection, salt water disposal, water supply for
injection, observation, etc.
Established Reserves: Those reserves recoverable
under current technology and present and
anticipated economic conditions specifically proved
by drilling, testing or production, plus that judgement
portion of contiguous recoverable reserves that are
interpreted to exist, from geological, geophysical or
similar information, with reasonable certainty.

I hope all of you enjoyed the pictures from the
Fashion Show that were in the last edition of
Mountain Messages. We thought everyone
would enjoy hearing how all of this came
together and seeing a few more pictures from
this amazing function! Once again, Alberta
Foothills members have proven that when we
pull together, the impossible becomes possible!
What is the Walk-In Closet program?
The Walk-In Closet program provides business
attire for women re-entering the workforce
who are not in a financial position to purchase a
business wardrobe. All clothing, accessories,
etc. are gently used items that have been
donated specifically to the Walk-In Closet.
Women re-entering the workforce are given the
opportunity to go to The Walk-In Closet and
select business appropriate outfits. To find out
more information about the Walk-In Closet and
how to donate your gently used items, please
go to www.makingchangesassociation.ca.
How long has this event been running and who
were the participants?
This is a brand new event and we are proud to
say that this event was conceived by one of
Alberta Foothills members – Deb Rice-
Salomons. When you talk energy…you talk Deb.
She took her idea and made it happen in just 6
short weeks. Her idea was very simple:
challenge a group of women who are employed
in various companies throughout the energy
industry to compete against their peers in
support of other women. And, a winning
formula it was! Five groups came together and
raised approximately $25,000.00. The groups
included employees from 4 energy industry
companies and the Alberta Foothills Desk and
Derrick Club. I am proud to say the Alberta
Foothills group place first in the total amount
that was raised.
What Did Alberta Foothills contribute to
making this event a success?
Our members did
what they do
best...everything!
They sold tickets,
(more than their
allotted
number!),
canvassed family, friends and business
associates to provide business clothing and
accessories to be sold in the boutique, and they
spent hours organizing, cleaning, sewing and
tagging clothing for the event. They sold 50/50
tickets, wrist bands (for the West Jet draw) and
hosted the “Heads or Tails” game that
determined the winner, donated prizes for the
“Guess How Many”
draw and to add
even more
excitement,
auctioned off “A
Day at the
Stampede
Chuckwagon Races”
with Cliff
Cunningham who is
a professional
Chuckwagon driver.
They modelled some of the business attire that
had been donated; choreographed the music
and wrote their own dialogue for the models to
strut their stuff. Our models rocked the catwalk
with style, grace and attitude. All the bling they
wore was on loan from Birks Jewelers!
Members came up with everything necessary to
make our “boutique” stand out. From displays,
to backdrops and lighting, to having our “staff”
members dress in Top Hats with the gold
ribbons and gold scarves (all made by our
members Sue Dennis and Joanne Riggall).
Finally, additional members attended the event
to show their support of our club and the event.
EMPOWERING WOMEN WITH ENERGY
Charity Fashion Show In Support of Making Changes – Walk-In Closet
Submitted by Lenore Summers
Page 10
Who from Alberta Foothills participated?
Let’s start with the Event Founder, Deb Rice-
Salomons – 6 weeks start to finish. WOW! Lucy
Mulgrew and Kathi DesChene headed up our
planning team for the Club, even though they
were both preparing for this year’s Energy
Excursion to the British Isles (yes – they were on
the organizing committee for that as well and
were leaving 1 week after the Fashion Show!).
Joanne Riggall and Lorna Myers organized the
clothing donations and the boutique. They
provided the backdrops and lighting, clothing
racks, decorations, display cases and signage
(donated by BD Media), and managed the
boutique sales. They solicited prizes for the
fundraisers, sewed, organized the models and
their outfits, and they took care of all the little
details.
The fashion models included: Brigitte Shaw,
Brenda Wyton, Theresa Schultz, Loreena
Hopkins, Wendy Gibson, Kathy Bishop, Sandy
Fitzpatrick, Kim Brauer, Cori Hnatowich, Amber
Croswell, Angela Tyler, Lorna Myers, Lucy
Mulgrew, Roseline Cyr, Brian Toth (Rockwell
Services), and Candace and Sue. Kim Brauer
and Cori Hnatowich also designed the shopping
bag for the competition and received
‘honourable mention’ for their efforts. Debb
Porath managed the audio for our group and
the whole event
Our additional boutique staff, ticket sellers, set
up and take down crews, and general
supporters included: Lenore Summers, Kim
Boyes, Linda Topolinsky, Sharon McClare,
Marilyn Carter (Paparazzi), Loreen Jensen,
Sharon Grocutt, Tracy Fillmore, and Ronda
Cornell, .
I sincerely hope that I have not missed anyone!
We have a lot to be proud of in this club.
Congratulations to all of you who participated!

September 2011
Dear Members,
It’s September already. Summer is winding down. I’m looking forward to much cooler temperatures. Many of you are probably in full swing getting the children ready for school, so watch out for school zones.
If you recall, a special committee was assigned at the Budget and Planning Meeting to investigate the use of Social Networking Media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). The committee has compiled a report which was sent to all Club Presidents to discuss with you and get feedback. The report is also available to you on the ADDC web site under the August 20th mailing information. The use of Social Networking Media will be discussed further at Convention during the Open Forum session on Friday, September 23rd.
I’m sure you’ve heard everyone reminding you of the upcoming Convention. The Region II Clubs of Bay Area, Heartland, Little Egypt, and Olney are putting the final touches on all the activities. If you haven’t registered yet, now is the time to get those forms filled out and sent in. For those of you planning to attend the convention, be sure to bring with you copies of the Rules of Convention, Convention Procedures, Special Parliamentary Hints, Candidate Information for Association Offices, and a current copy of ADDC Bylaws and Standing Rules. These are available on the ADDC Website and will not be furnished at convention.
As you read this, you’ll either be heading off to St. Louis or just returning. I know the 60th Annual ADDC Convention will be a wonderful experience for all those in attendance and provide many memories for a long time to come. So don’t forget to save those photos and other items for everyone’s scrapbook. This time next month, I will happily be able to introduce your 2012 ADDC
Officers and Regional Directors.
Have you considered your role for the future of your club? Your club needs you to step forward as a member of the Board. If you do not feel ready to serve as an officer, volunteer for a committee – as a chairman or as a member. Discover your talents, increase your knowledge, and gain confidence as you learn about Desk and Derrick. I encourage each of you to get involved in your local club, Region, or on the Association level. What are you waiting for? The Gateway to Growth and Opportunity is still open!
Until next month…

Letter No. 9 September 2011 Where has the year gone? It just seems like a couple months ago I was just an observer during the meetings at Convention in Houston. By time you read this we will be getting ready to attend our 60th Annual Convention in St. Louis.
Speaking of getting ready, my husband, Frank, and I just returned from a motorcycle trip to the “Sturgis Bike Rally” in the Black Hills of Sturgis, South Dakota. Before leaving for our adventure there were many things to consider and plan for; what and how to pack whether it be strapped to the bikes or in the trailer Frank pulls behind his Electra Glide. Then there’s the planning of which route to take, if there’s road construction or bad weather to avoid; being flexible and knowing your limitations are key to making a safe and enjoyable trip.
The same can be applied as a member of your club and the Association. What are your goals? What do you want to gain from your membership now and in the future? Have you made plans to reach these goals? Do you need help in achieving them? Would a long term member assist you as a mentor help?
Once you have answered these questions, then it’s just a matter of putting it into a plan and then take steps to work your plan. Commitment to your plan, being flexible, knowing your limitations but still being able to step out of your comfort zone is the key to achieving your goals. There are many Desk and Derrick members ready and willing to assist, you just need to ask for their help.
I’m looking forward to seeing many Region VII members attend Convention, some of you I just spent time with at Regional and others I hope to catch up on some visiting along with members from all Regions at St. Louis.
Not only will we be reuniting old friendships and creating new ones; it’s also time to conduct Association business. Delegates and Alternates please come prepared totake part and speak for your Club. Geraldine “Jerry” Rasmussen will be attending pre-convention meetings as an observer to gear up for her duties as 2012 Region VII Director; I’m very excited for her and I know she’ll represent Region VII fantastically being well informed, organized and ready to be your voice to the Board.
I look forward to seeing you in St. Louis!
Until then…………..keep the shiny side up!

Two members of the special committee to review social
media attended a Social Media Marketing seminar. The
special committee members have great optimism that it
can be very useful for the ADDC.
First, what is social media? Social media is the
interaction between individuals through web based
platforms. These interactions are useful to build
relationships, promote messages, and provide
information.
How is social media potentially beneficial to the ADDC?
Social media is the future of marketing. It takes the
power of word of mouth and multiplies it to the nth
degree. Why is this valuable? The ADDC has a vital
mission and message. We are here to promote the
energy industry and energy education to our
membership, our industry, and to the public we serve.
Possibly at no other time in history has this mission
been more vital. We feel that social media platforms
can help us achieve some of our goals.
Social media can be useful to promote our message to
our membership, from meeting dates/times, to field
trip information, and to education, social media
platforms can get the message in front of people and
invites them to interact. The more people interact, the
more likely they will be to spread the message.
Initially, we would suggest using these platforms:
1. Facebook
2. Twitter
3. LinkedIn
4. YouTube
There may be others that are useful, but these are well
known and respected.
Facebook – Facebook is the largest social media
platform. It is a very user friendly platform that has
good features. The primary benefit is it spurs
conversation. Members can ask questions and can
receive an answer that the whole group can benefit
from. Another benefit of Facebook is it offers group
pages. Each club could have a group page that
members can join. Only people added by the
administrator of the group would see the content that it
contains. Group pages are for communities that want
to communicate internally and privately; these can be
useful for regions or the Association in general.
Twitter – Twitter is a micro blogging platform. What
does that mean? It is a platform for spreading a
message to your followers. Again, this could report
meeting dates/times, field trip info, and/or educational
tidbits. Items that club leadership wants the group at
large to know can be blasted out quickly for members
to see. These tweets would need to be sent out by
approval of the club board, but they could be effective
in sharing information.
LinkedIn – LinkedIn is a social media platform for
professional networking. This could be a great way to
start bringing members together. LinkedIn offers group
pages where content could be delivered to members
like club news, industry articles, etc. It would also be a
good avenue for Desk and Derrick members to link up
with other oil, gas, and energy professionals to invite
them to club meetings and to join our organization.
YouTube – YouTube is a great tool for educating. There
are countless training videos on YouTube, as well as
other useful videos. Clubs could shoot their own
educational videos and have them available to be seen.
There are a lot of neat things that could be done with
this platform. Many people think it is just a place for
silly videos, but it is so much more.
With all of these platforms there would need to be
guidelines for usage determined by the ADDC Board.
These would set a standard for how we conduct
business in these media and would address safety of
personal and club/Association information. This should
not be hard to address as many of the companies we
represent already have a disclaimer statement and we
would have a ready-made template.
We are standing on the edge of a very positive
opportunity and the members of the special committee
support the use of social media within the Association
and clubs.
Suggested disclaimer: This is your place to exchange

• Participation in this community is completely
voluntary
• Be respectful, even if you disagree….personal

• Direct marketing is prohibited
At this time, we suggest that individual Desk and Derrick
clubs be permitted to use these four platforms, in
accordance w/ the statement/disclaimer. The clubs will
be responsible for monitoring the content and use of
the media but any member who finds unprofessional
behavior can bring it to the attention of the ADDC Board
of Directors, which will address the situation as found
necessary.

August 23, 2011 To All Club Presidents: The 60th Annual ADDC Convention will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, from September 21-25, 2011. All clubs are urged to send a Delegate and an Alternate to attend Convention and act on behalf of the club during business sessions On Friday, September 23rd and Saturday, September 24th between 7:15am – 7:45am, all Delegates and Alternates attending Convention are required to check in with their respective Regional Representative at the Credentials table at least thirty (30) minutes prior to each business session. The table will be located just inside the meeting room. Delegates and Alternates will then be asked to produce a copy of their completed credentials form and sign a signature sheet. To eliminate confusion, Delegates and Alternates are requested to sign in AT THE SAME TIME. Beginning with the first business session, each Delegate will be issued a numbered badge to wear during all business sessions. This badge will be the delegate's responsibility and must be retained and worn until the final business session on Saturday, at which time it should be returned to the proper Credentials Committee Representative. If you have additional questions, please feel free to call or email me at any time. The Regional Representatives and I are looking forward to this year's Convention and with your assistance, the check-in process will be smooth and easy. Sincerely, Kathy Deshasier
