From the ChairmanOn behalf of the Council of Overseers, I want to recognize the progress and impact your contributions have made this past year. The centennial campaign has kicked into high gear as has the planning of programs at the Jones School and across campus as part of the year-long centennial celebration. This August we celebrate 10 years in McNair Hall, an amazing facility from which all our work, study and research takes place. We have much to applaud.

I also want to extend the council’s thanks to the faculty for their innovation and inspiration in the classroom and in their fields of research, the professional staff for their efforts and expertise, and the Houston business community for their participation in programs such as the Rice Energy Finance Summit and the Rice Business Plan Competition. The Jones School plays a critical role in building a strong business community and your dedication enriches the experience for our students and alumni.

Many of the year’s successes were established by the participation of strong, committed alumni who serve the Jones School in many ways. It’s this participation in tandem with the world class research of faculty which continues to grow the reputation and global regard of not just the Jones School but Rice University as a whole. This year found Rice MBA students representing the school in Rwanda, Brazil, Mexico, China and India. The school is now admitting our third consecutive year of PhD students, all of whom will one day teach future leaders at other highly ranked schools and in doing so bring additional respect to our graduate program and research.

The Jones School is making a difference in our own community as well. Programs like Jones Partners Thought Leadership Series and REEP are providing the educational guidance to insure even better future educational leaders in our schools. Our students continue to make a difference in Community Capstone, Action Learning Project and the Board Fellows – all of which I invite you to learn more about.

2

Entrepreneurship continues to drive not just our own students and alumni but attracts students from around the country for the largest and richest business plan competition on Earth. Organizations such as the Rice Alliance and the Jones Graduate School Entrepreneurs Organization seek not only to identify potential but to drive the spirit of entrepreneurship we find in our alumni, students and community.

The Jones School continues to provide value through many different facets and only gains momentum through the active participation and support of our stakeholders.

I look forward to seeing the continued influence of our graduates around the world and encourage you, in the coming year, to do something to support the Jones School.

Sincerely,

T. JAY COLLINSCouncil of Overseers ChairmanRice University Board of Trustees MemberRice BA ’68, Rice ME ’69Former President and CEO, Oceaneering International, Inc.

From the DeanI am proud to celebrate the past year and share all that we have accomplished with you in the pages of this annual report. Looking back over the year, we see the emergence of substantial improvement in nearly every aspect of the Jones School — from student admission and career placement to faculty impact and alumni support.

As we continued our commitment to maintain or increase admission standards in each program, total full time equivalent enrollment increased to 754, the highest enrollment ever. Growth occurred across the board in applications, selectivity, GMAT scores, as well as domestic population from outside Texas and international students in the full time class. In the Rice MBA program for professionals, we saw big gains in the average incoming salary and percentage of admission offers accepted. Applications for executive students increased, as did the number of students with advanced degrees. Entering its third year, the PhD in Business now has 20 students across four disciplines with selectivity at 4.7 percent this past year.

The persistent demand for our students is reflected in a balanced industry employment mix. Metrics from the Career Management Center have full-time students employed in energy at 31 percent, financial services at 24 percent, consulting at 18 percent and consumer products at 14 percent.

Faculty contributions in research, teaching and service are critical to fulfilling the Jones School’s mission. Our faculty members continue to challenge and inspire students in the classroom, conduct innovative research and inform the global dialogue between business and society. The strength of the Jones School faculty helped to propel the Rice MBA full-time program into the Businessweek top 30 for the first time. It also gave our faculty an “A” for teaching quality, a top 10 ranking for research productivity, and subsequently included Prashant Kale as one of the 10 most popular MBA professors globally.

Alumni philanthropic support is a critical component of the school’s progress. This demonstrates pride in the Jones School, an investment in the future of our students and faculty, and a commitment to increase the value of the Rice MBA. It reflects alumni satisfaction with the quality of the degree and speaks to the collective power of the Rice alumni network. This year we passed the $37,000,000 mark toward our $65,000,000 objective in Rice University’s Centennial Campaign. We are looking to end strong. Thanks to all those who have contributed.

Transforming business thought? We do it every day with your continued support.

Sincerely,

BILL GLICKDean and H. Joe Nelson III Professor of ManagementJesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University

Centennial Campaign Less than a year remains before Rice’s 100th anniversary, and the Centennial Campaign — started in September 2005 — is gaining momentum toward its $1 billion goal. As of November 1, 2011, volunteers and donors have raised a total of $747 million, of which $106 million came in during the academic year ending in June 2011. Already that surge of new funding is proving transformative across a range of endeavors at Rice, and it is providing an inspiring preview of the great potential to be realized as we reach our final goal. In the last capital campaign, the Jones School built a world-class facility. With the Centennial Campaign, we are investing in human capital! The Jones School Centennial Campaign goal is $65 million, which will allow us to attract and develop future leaders through scholarships and to recruit and retain the best faculty in the world. Connecting Through Knowledge

The research productivity of our faculty continues to be outstanding. Collectively, the faculty published a total of 108 articles in the 45 top academic and practitioner journals tracked by the Financial Times (compared to 60 articles five years ago). As a result, the Jones School’s research ranking in the Financial Times increased

to No. 14 internationally (compared to No. 52 five years ago). The faculty’s research productivity also contributed to the

Jones School’s first ever Businessweek top 30 ranking, where they also ranked No. 10 nationally in intellectual capital. Jones School faculty were selected to present their research at many of the top international conferences and invited to give research seminars at many of the top universities internationally.

Several faculty members also received distinguished recognition within their professions. Jennifer George

was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Management and Jing Zhou was elected as a Fellow of the Society for

Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Steve Zeff was the plenary speaker as the Presidential Scholar at the annual meeting of the American Accounting Association. Kerry Back served on a committee of distinguished scholars to select the next editor of the Journal of Finance. Erik Dane was honored with an outstanding reviewer award (his second) from the Academy of Management.

Our faculty has been visible in the media both for their expert opinions and in articles profiling their research. Utpal Dholakia’s research on the social couponing website Groupon was featured in numerous articles including those in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Businessweek and Forbes and on many radio and television stations across the country. Vikas Mittal’s research on brand recognition and customer loyalty was mentioned in Time magazine and yahoo.com articles about Starbucks’ logo redesign and the company’s Asian expansion. Gustavo Grullon was featured in a fortune.cnn.com story about the likelihood of a double

dip recession. Ajay Kalra’s research on why customers purchase extended warranties was described in a New York Times article

about Best Buy’s Super Bowl commercial featuring Ozzy Osbourne and its new consumer electronics buyback program. Vikas Mittal

and Scott Sonenshein were featured in numerous media outlets to provide insights regarding the United/Continental merger. Bill Arnold and Vince Kaminski were frequently quoted on issues related to energy and regulation. Businessweek recognized Prashant Kale as one of the top ten most popular business professors and referred to him as a “scholarly rock star” due to his high impact research and teaching prowess.

Within the school, our faculty received awards and promotions. Five faculty received JGSB teaching awards selected by students and alumni: Brian Rountree (Full-time MBA), Richard Price (MBA for Professionals evening), Prashant Kale (MBA for Professionals weekend), Margaret Cording (MBA for Executives) and Al Napier (Alumni). Three faculty received research awards selected by their peers: Alex Butler and Utpal Dholakia (co-recipients of the award for tenured faculty) and Scott Sonenshein (untenured faculty). Four faculty were promoted to Full Professor with tenure: Utpal Dholakia, Gustavo Grullon, Amit Pazgal and Anthea Zhang; and two were honored with endowed chairs: James Weston is the William S. Mackey and Verne F. Simons Distinguished Associate Professor of Finance and Alex Butler is the Jones School Distinguished Associate Professor of Finance.

Finally, several faculty members made significant contributions to Rice and to the Houston community. Randy Batsell, Brian Rountree and Duane Windsor served last year on the Rice University Faculty Senate. Bill Arnold,

Jing Zhou and Vikas Mittal, respectively, served on the Provost’s task forces on Energy, International Strategy and Bio-medicine and Human Health. Jill Foote, Rick Schell and David Tobin organized and a number of Jones School faculty participated in the Rice Summer Business Institute, an intensive business immersion for 40 students from underserved high schools in Houston.

A number of our faculty members have contributed to the success of the Rice Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP), teaching students in their MBA courses and in the Business Fellowship for School Leaders as well as the Summer Institute for School Leaders. Several faculty organized conferences that brought thousands of professionals and academics from across the country to campus, including the 33rd annual INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Marketing Science Conference, the American Marketing Association Chief Marketing Officer Forum, and the Strategy Symposium for Emerging Markets.

The Power of Endowment An endowed chair is among the most important contributions to higher education, a vital tool to ensure faculty excellence. It honors and recognizes the distinction of superior faculty while providing invaluable financial support above and beyond salary, for use in research, teaching or service activities. It is a powerful recruitment tool; the more chairs a school has endowed, the more prestigious and attractive to potential faculty.
