Today’s Presentation
‣Definitions
‣Why a statewide patron-driven resource sharing system in Indiana?
‣How we done it good with MeLCat
‣Next steps
DefinitionA resource sharing system is . . .
‣ Patron initiated borrowing
‣ Automated routing of requests based on circulation data
‣ Load/request balancing done by the software
‣ Multitype
‣ No requirement to change ILS vendors
DefinitionIt is NOT . . .
‣Traditional ILL through OCLC WorldCat, ILLiad, or a similar system
‣Librarian mediated
‣Adoption of the same ILS by all participants
ModelsDecentralized (URSA, Relais)
‣Usually based on Z39.50 connections
‣Each library installs client/server
‣Each library queried for every search
‣Results can vary depending on whether a library’s Z server is up
‣De-duping is a challenge
‣Works with existing ILS
ModelsUnion catalog (INN-Reach, WorldCat Navigator)
‣One central catalog
‣May require local software
‣Consistent search results
‣A clean database is a challenge
‣Works with existing ILS
Resource Sharing in 2011
‣E-books will have an impact on requests
Not yet
‣Requests for printed materials are not going away any time soon
PS: Loaning e-books is a big, ugly mess right now
Resource Sharing in 2011
Is it still necessary?
‣MOBIUS requests in 2010: 190,000
‣OhioLINK requests: 800,00
‣MnLINK Gateway requests: 585,000
‣MeLCat requests: 1,000,000
With exception of MnLINK Gateway, all are increases over the previous year
Benefits for Indiana‣ Increased patron satisfaction
‣More use of existing collections
‣ Leverage investments already made in ILL
‣Make ILL more efficient & effective
MeLCat Case Study‣ Patron-initiated requesting
‣Routing of requests based on circ status
‣Request balancing
‣Union catalog model
‣ INN-Reach for central catalog
‣Works with any ILS

“The measure of MeLCat’s success and popularity on campus is when you say ‘MeLCat,’ no one asks what you mean.”
-- Linda Moore, Public Services Librarian, Hillsdale College
Last year we borrowed 3,725 items from MeLCat. In contrast, we purchased about 1,900 items for our collection. At an average cost of $20 per item, we saved $74,500 by borrowing instead of purchasing.
-- Mary Chasseur, Director, Frankenmuth Wickson District Library

“Those I have talked to advocate for continued MeLCat funding over direct state aid to public libraries, if a choice needs to be made.”
