2011 SEASON PREVIEW

AIR FORCE WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS 3

While the first glance of the 2011 Air Force women’s gymnascs rostermay look somewhat inexperienced, with just five upperclassmen and ninenewcomers, head coach Doug Day has created a deep lineup of talentedveterans and impressive freshmen that is posed to make an impact thisseason. Under Day’s guidance, the Falcons have connued to improve …and 2011 promises to be no excepon.

Despite its youth, Air Force has a strong backbone with its senior class.

Briany Duon, a 2008 USAG All-American on the floor exercise and all-around, will serve as the captain for the 2011 season. Duon brings awealth of experience to the 2011 roster, as she has competed in every sin-gle meet of her career, including 36 as an all-around competor.

Classmate Lisa Wong is another experienced veteran, having competed inall but one compeon throughout her first three seasons. A two-meacademic all-conference selecon and 2010 USAG Scholar-Athlete selec-on, Wong earned a spot at the NCAA Regional Championship last season.

Fellow senior Holland Davis came on strong during her junior campaign, earning a permanent spot in the uneven bars rotaon and serving as aconsistent performer on the vault. Voted as the Most Improved Gymnastof 2010, Davis will connue to add depth and leadership for the Falcons.

The Falcons’ next two classes are comprised of just two members, but theexperience that was gained by both gymnasts during their respecvefreshman seasons will provide an invaluable benefit to the Air Force pro-gram going into the 2011 season.

Air Force will welcome Sammi Jones back to the lineup, aer she missedall of last season with an injury. Despite not compeng last year, thesquad’s lone junior was a vital member of the 2009 squad, compeng inevery compeon on the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise.

Coming off of a strong freshman campaign, Tara Harris represents the Fal-cons’ sophomore class. Harris was an important part of the lineup lastseason, compeng on the balance beam in every meet, and serving as aconsistent performer on the vault.

The largest nine-member freshmen class is the largest in program history.

Maddie Bannon was the regional champion on the balance beam, as wellas a three-me state champion. Emily Bucher made three trips to the na-onal championships, while Laura Fauss was the Level 9 Region 1 all-around champion in 2010. Fauss was also a two-me Western qualifier,four-me regional competor and a member of the Region 1 team thatwon the 2010 Western Naonal Championships.

Linnaea Hance is a four-me Level 10 state and regional qualifier, whiletwice serving as an alternate for the Junior Olympic Naonal Champi-onships. Jessica Hanner was a five-me all-around champion at the statelevel, a three-me Western naonal qualifier, a two-me Level 9 regionalall-around champion and the 2009 Level 10 regional champion on the bal-ance beam. Kae Hawthorne adds another Junior Olympic Naonal qual-ifier to the Falcons’ roster.

Janie Kovacs was a four-me Level 10 regional qualifier and Level 8 Re-gion 5 all-around champion. Jen Larsen was a member of the team thatwon the 2010 Level 10 naonal tle, while earning three top-10 finishesat the 2008 Level 9 Western naonals. Melanie Orz was a member ofthe fourth-place team at the high school naonal championships, whilealso advancing to the Level 10 regional championships.

Day returns to the gym for his fih season as the Falcons’ head coach. The2010 Mountain Pacific Sports Federaon coach of the year, Day led the2009 squad to some of its highest totals in over six years and hopes tobuild on that success with his latest recruing class.

2010 SEASON IN REVIEW

34 GOAIRFORCEFALCONS.COM

Highlighted by its highest team total in over six years, the Air Force women’s gymnas-tics team had a remarkable season in 2010. The season, where head coach Doug Daywas honored as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s Coach of the Year, saw theFalcons surpass the 190-point mark on three occasions, including a season-high scoreof 193.300 against a team ranked 20th in the national rankings.

The Falcons opened the 2010 season looking for someone to fill the void left by thegraduation of two-time MPSF Gymnast of the Year Abbey Rogers. At first glance, the taskmay have seemed daunting, as the 13-member roster featured just two seniors. How-ever, the lineup had strong veteran leadership from seniors Aftan Boudreaux (team cap-tain) and Michelle Denise, and a wealth of experience from its returning members, which included four USAG All-Americans.

The depth of the returning roster, which featured Boudreaux, Denise, three juniors andfour sophomores, was bolstered by the addition of four talented freshmen.

Air Force opened the season on Jan. 8 at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational in Corval-lis, Ore., facing a pair of teams that were ranked among the top 15 of the preseasoncoaches’ poll. Highlighted by three individual top-10 finishes, the Falcons tallied 184.475points to place third in the four-team meet. No. 10 Oregon State won its own invita-tional with a score of 195.625, while 13th-ranked Illinois placed second with a 192.850.Air Force claimed its first win of the season at that meet, as it defeated Mountain Pa-cific Sports Federation foe, Alaska-Anchorage, by one point (183.475) to take third.

Sophomore Jenna Dudley posted the highest finish of the Air Force gymnasts, en routeto a fourth-place all-around total of 38.875. Dudley’s best individual event finish cameon the balance beam, where she tied with junior Brittany Dutton for eighth (9.525).Dudley also claimed a top-10 finish on the floor exercise with a score of 9.600.

The schedule didn’t ease up for the Falcons, who traveled to the Winterfest Classic inDenver, Colo., the following week. Air Force once again took on a pair of nationally-ranked teams; this time in the form of sixth-ranked Denver and No. 18 Penn State. AirForce improved its team total by more than a point (195.850) to take third behind thehost Pioneers (194.650) and Nittany Lions (194.150).

Dudley and Dutton picked up a pair of top-10 finishes on the floor exercise, as they fin-ished eighth (9.725) and ninth (9.675), respectively, while freshman Tara Harris placed10th on the balance beam with a score of 9.475. The duo of Dudley and Dutton also tiedfor the team’s top score on the vault (9.575) and Dutton used that same score to pacethe Falcons on the uneven bars.

Air Force continued on the road, traveling to Normal, Ill., for the Illinois State Quad-rangular on Jan. 24. With a team score of 185.150, the Falcons posted their secondhighest total of the season to finish third. Illinois State won its home competition witha score of 190.925, while Western Michigan finished second with a 190.525. Air Forcetook the top three spots on the floor exercise to earn a narrow 185.350-184.800 victoryover the visiting Seawolves in the program’s first dual meet of the season.

THE ACADEMY EXPERIENCE

48 GOAIRFORCEFALCONS.COM

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMYIn 1948, a board of leading civilianand military educators was ap-pointed to plan the curriculum for anacademy that would meet the needsof the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Forcerequirements could not be met byexpanding the other service acade-mies and recommended an Air ForceAcademy be established withoutdelay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the AirForce W. Stuart Symington ap-pointed a commission to assist in se-lecting a site and on April 1, 1954,President Dwight D. Eisenhower au-thorized creation of the UnitedStates Air Force Academy. After con-sidering 580 sites in 45 states, thecommission narrowed the choice tothree locations.

During the summer of 1954, Secre-tary of the Air Force Harold Talbottselected a site near ColoradoSprings, Colo. Colorado contributed$1 million toward purchase of theproperty.

In July 1955, the first Academy classentered interim facilities at Lowry AirForce Base, Denver, while construc-tion began. It was sufficiently com-pleted for occupancy by the cadetwing in late August 1958. Initial con-struction cost was $142 million.

Women entered the Academy onJune 28, 1976, as members of theclass of 1980.

The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year pro-gram of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers ofcharacter, motivated to lead the United States Air Force inservice to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelorof science degree and a commission as a second lieutenantin the Air Force.

COURSE OF STUDY Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that providesthe knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a ca-reer Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience is inte-grated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes inevery graduate.

The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sci-ences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadetstake additional elective courses to complete requirementsfor one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of thecadets complete majors in science and engineering; the re-mainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, be-havioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineer-ing, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics.

FACULTY COMPOSITIONThe majority of the Academy's faculty members, more than500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarilyfrom career-officer volunteers who have established out-standing records of performance and dedication. Each hasat least a master's degree and more than 55 percent havedoctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study.

About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring greatdepth of disciplinary and educational expertise and provideacademic stability and continuity.

Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning asan integral part of their officer development. The Air ForceAcademy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the mostaccessible and involved faculty for four years in a row.

To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, theAcademy has several distinguished visiting professors andendowed professors who serve one or more years. Officersfrom other services, as well as officers from allied countriesare also members of the faculty. Distinguished civilian andmilitary lecturers also share their expertise with the cadetsduring the academic year.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMThe Academy's athletic program is designed to improvephysical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadershipqualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some ofthe most extensive physical education, intramural sports andintercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets takeat least three different physical education courses each year.

MILITARY EDUCATION AND TRAINING An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadettraining and continues throughout the four years. Seniorsare responsible for the organizational leadership of the cadetwing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop teamand interpersonal leadership and instructional skills.

Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles aspossible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers.

Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are em-phasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Fresh-men study the military role in United States society, as wellas the mission and organization of the Air Force. Sopho-mores receive instruction in communication skills and jun-iors study combat and operational aspects of the Air Force.

The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring andparachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet FlyingTeam.

Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-weektraining periods. There are a variety of programs availableand each cadet is required to complete two training periodseach summer with leave during the other period. All newcadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their firstsummer.

Combat survival training is a required three-week programduring cadets' second summer. For other second-summertraining periods, cadets have options such as working withAirmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, air-borne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachutetraining.

During their last two summers, all cadets are offered lead-ership training as supervisors or instructors in the summerprograms listed above.

Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the ed-ucation program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs avail-able to Academy cadets.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

50 GOAIRFORCEFALCONS.COM

Dr. Hans J. Muehis in his seventhyear as the di-rector of athlet-ics at the AirForce Academy.A rered AirForce brigadiergeneral, Muehwas vice dean offaculty for two

years prior to his rerement from acve duty in thesummer of 2004. Mueh was heavily involved in Acad-emy athlecs before becoming director of athlecs. He was the Academy's faculty athlecs representavefrom 1996-2004 and was a long-me member of theboard of directors for the Air Force Academy AthlecsAssociaon.

Since becoming the director of athlecs, Mueh has ledthe Academy to some remarkable feats. In 2007, theAcademy was one of only three schools (MichiganState and Boston College) to reach post-season play infootball (2007), men’s basketball and ice hockey(2006-07). It marked the first me a service academyhas ever had a team compete in the post-season in allthree sports.

In addion, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketballteam has played in an NCAA tournament and the Na-onal Invitaonal Tournament’s Final Four. The icehockey team won three straight conference champi-onships and made three straight appearances in theNCAA tournament. Mueh was on the selecon com-miee that hired current head coach Frank Serratoreand led the Academy’s move into the Athlec HockeyAssociaon.

The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, has gone through a major overhaul under Mueh. Heled the transion from the rerement of the leg-endary Fisher DeBerry aer 23 years at the helm tohiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Acad-emy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, lead-ing the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and asecond-place finish in the Mountain West Conferencein 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl gamein five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in2007. The program has posted back-to-back eight-winseasons and qualified for bowl games since, markingthe first me since 1990-92 Air Force has been to abowl three straight years.

Mueh has been just as successful behind the sceneswith the administraon of the department. Mueh re-structured the department with an internal/externalmodel that has streamlined resources and made thedepartment more effecve from top to boom. In ad-dion, he has the department on course to become afederally chartered non-profit organizaon which willlead to more fund-raising opportunies. Mueh was in-strumental in the USAFA Endowment and the an-

nouncement of an Indoor Training Facility that brokeground in the summer of 2010. The $15 million facil-ity will be completed in 2011.

Mueh has also been acve within the conference andthe NCAA. He was recently selected to be part of theNCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been ac-ve on the NCAA’s academics/eligibility compliancecabinet, the men’s golf commiee and the region 7postgraduate scholarship commiee. Mueh has beenequally acve within the conference on various lead-ership commiees. He is currently on the awards andrecognion commiee and has previously served onthe joint council execuve commiee, and commit-tees on championships, television and sportsmanship.

Before assuming his dues as vice dean at the Acad-emy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of thedepartment of chemistry at the Academy, a posionhe held since October 1987 where he oversaw the an-nual design and instrucon of 25 undergraduatecourses for 1,500 cadets annually.

ACADEMY ATHLETICS

AIR FORCE WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS 51

Few schools in the country have an athlec program as extensive as the UnitedStates Air Force Academy's.

The goals of the Academy’s athlec program are to enhance the physical condi-oning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teachleadership in a compeve environment and to build character. There are threesubdivisions of the athlec program: intercollegiate athlecs, intramurals and phys-ical educaon.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAA-sanconed teams, facing some of the top compeon in the naon. Men’s teams are football, base-ball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnascs, indoor and out-door track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo andwrestling. The Academy fields women's teams in basketball, cross-country, fenc-ing, gymnascs, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, ten-nis and volleyball. In addion, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAA programs;boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this con-ference against teams from Brigham Young, New Mexico, Colorado State, San Diego State, TCU, Wyoming, Utah and UNLV. All sports also compete against non-confer-ence opponents, including many naonally-ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which is em-blemac of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 16mes, which is more than Army and Navy combined. The winner of the annual rivalry vis-its the White House to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It’sa modern, versale structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building isfive stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side byside.

RACE FOR THE CUREThe members of the Air Force gymnascs program are used to compengagainst other gymnasts, but last week the Falcons came together to com-pete in a bigger challenge. For the second straight year, members of themen's and women's gymnascs teams took to the streets of downtownDenver to parcipate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The 33 members of the Fal-cons' gymnascs programwere some of the over 50,000parcipants that took part inDenver's 18th annual race onSunday, Oct. 3. The race beganat Confluence Park and con-nued around Invesco Field atMile High, before concludingnear the Pepsi Center.

Men’s team senior Dan Klimkowski served as the captain for the Falcons'volunteer efforts for the second straight year. Last year, he saw the proj-ect as a way to promote bonding between the men's and women's teams, while supporng a worthwhile cause. This year, the Falcons had a famil-iar face in their thoughts, as they walked in support of Diane, a photogra-pher and friend of women's head coach Doug Day, who spent the weekprior to undergoing a double mastectomy with the team taking photosfor the upcoming season.

"Everyone was really into therace this year," Klimkowski said."The race has become some-thing we look forward to everyyear. When I started this, I hadno idea that it would become atradion. (This year) was reallyspecial, because we had thechance to come together andrace for Diane. She is such astrong woman and it puts a lotin perspecve."

The Falcons exceeded their goal this year, as the individual members con-tributed over $3,100 to the cause. The Falcons, who have surpassed

$5,000 over the last two years, were listed among the top 55 on the Den-ver Race for the Cure's Fundraising Honor Roll for 2010.

Denver's Race for the Cure is one in a series of races that take place everyyear around the world. The races help raise significant funds and aware-ness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrate breast cancer survivor-ship and honor those who have lost their bale with the disease.
