DESCRIPTION A practical approach to the early detection and management of breast cancer

This lavishly illustrated atlas provides radiologists with essential information for the differential diagnosis of breast diseases on the basis of clinical presentation, mammography, and ultrasound. The book begins with chapters on tumor biology, prognostic factors, and histology. The authors then provide a thorough evaluation of various methods for early detection and accurate diagnosis, including analog and digital mammography, ultrasound, MR imaging, PET/CT, and interventional procedures. They discuss in detail the strengths and limitations of each imaging modality, aspects of quality control, test intervals, peri- and postoperative management principles, and follow-up care.

Highlights:

▪ Presentation of difficult cases that effectively demonstrate the diagnostic hurdles and forensic pitfalls in breast diagnosis

▪ Special sections on breast cancer in men and young women, with discussion of women who are pregnant or lactating

▪ Color-coded practical tips and clinical notes for optimal comprehension of the material

▪ Extensive Q&A sections for self-testing in two major chapters

▪ More than 1,700 high-quality illustrations, including clinical color photographs, ultrasound images, and mammograms

BARTH

SALES HOOKS According to Prof. Barth we need to be careful about market: au comment:

*combination* of one-level mammography and ultrasound may be of disadvantage for radiologists because only one instead of two diagnostic steps for him, and experts in ultrasound may be sceptical as they fear that in future, radiologists are going to carry out ultrasound and take it away from them....

▪ This book is concerned less with the epidemiology of breast cancer than with its early detection and optimum treatment and the diagnostic problems that may arise in the postoperative breast.

▪ Combination of Mammography with ultrasound (and, additionally, cytology) for diagnosing breast cancer at a very early stage

▪ This atlas is intended to close the gap in physician education.

▪ This book, then, is an interactive guide that trains the reader in differential diagnosis and is intended more for experienced breast diagnosticians than for students learning the basics of mammography and other modalities. All in all, this atlas is not an "easy read" but a very challenging work.

▪ It is time to rethink the diagnostic methods that are used. Mammography is no longer the gold standard of breast imaging as it was in the 70's and 80's of the past century. Ultrasound has made tremendous strides, and today it should be used routinely in the early detection of breast cancer.

HALPERN

SALES HOOKS It's a good selling book and we want to keep it up to date.

New technology and new techniques have developed quickly and the book needed to be updated to keep pace.

Most of the 1st edition images were taken with 40-64 slice CTs. Most of the second edition images are from 256 slice CTs. The new technology has led to new techniques that allow the user to do what could not be done before and the book has these new techniques.

New chapter, The triple rule out. A patient presenting to the ER with chest pain and it has to be quickly determined if it is a heart attack, pulmonary embolism of aortic dissection/rupture. The new 256 slice CTs offer a single test that can make this call and quickly identify patients who need treatment and what treatment they need, while getting those not needing treatment home quicker.

New chapter: Congenital heart disease in adults. Heart disease that used to kill lots of kids can now be treated and these folks now grow up to be adults. However, they have sometimes very different cardiac anatomy and often need attention.

New chapter: Thoracic aorta. A real cardiac imaging study has to include the aorta and we now discuss this.

DESCRIPTION Chest radiology is one of the pillars in radiology, and the chest radiograph the most common diagnostic radiographic image. At the same time, diagnostic chest radiology is a very challenging field. Radiologic images of the chest provide a large number of findings that can influence the diagnostic and therapeutic decisions significantly. The aim of this manual is to introduce radiologists in-training to the systematic analysis of radiologic cardiopulmonary images. Readers who have worked through this manual should be able to answer competently the most frequently asked questions in chest radiology. They should be able to understand:

▪ Why reading a chest radiograph is so difficult

▪ What can actually be seen in those images

▪ How to use a systematic and analytic approach

▪ Certain patterns of findings that are helpful and lead to a faster diagnosis

▪ What details the referring physician needs to be given

▪ How to react in difficult cases

There is an increasing lack of time for training and teaching, and in many health-care environments there is also a lack of experienced senior physicians who are available for the training of younger colleagues. Thus, self-learning and knowledge acquisition is becoming increasingly important. This need is met by this manual which offers a concise introduction to the systematic image analysis of diagnostic chest radiographs.

▪ Clear and consistent text structure; double-page concept (left page: explanatory text and drawings, right page: related images)

▪ Description and discussion of the most common questions regarding diagnosis of bronchial carcinoma, pneumonia, bronchitis, fibrosis, heart failure, and pleural disorders

▪ Over 630 brilliant, often large-sized images and illustrations

▪ Important details emphasized in boxes and schematic overviews; cribs for the daily practice in the reading room

▪ Concise description of the involved modalities (conventional X-ray and CT)

▪ Additional, brief information on pathology and physiology where useful

▪ Training cases at the end of each chapter to enhance and control the learning experience

KIRCHNER

SALES HOOKS Not a comprehensive textbook, but a practice-orientated manual covering the main issues in diagnostic chest radiology.

▪ Focus on the essentials and what is of practical relevance

▪ Offers systematic approach to the analysis of diagnostic radiologic chest images

▪ Allows residents to deepen knowledge through numerous training cases

This second section follows a problem-based approach that takes into account how diseases present in the real world. It employs practical, symptom- and sign-based strategies for virtually all conditions encountered by the practitioner. Throughout the authors emphasize patterns of disease and how recognizing them can be the first step to successful management of a child with a neurological problem. The text concludes with a detailed discussion of neurological emergencies, keeping in mind that such conditions often present first to someone other than to a pediatric neurologist.
