Genex Commitment to Semen Quality

Genex Custom Collection has five facilities located throughout the United States committed to producing quality semen. Semen quality from your sire is determined by many factors including the bull’s health, age, condition, stress and the season. The bull’s health is the first factor that determines semen quality. Not every bull is equal in his ability to produce high quality sperm or the amount of sperm needed. The health of the bull and the size of the testicles are major factors. The quality of semen a bull has to offer may vary greatly during the course of the year. Young bulls are a challenge as they vary greatly from sire to sire. Some may gradually increase in the number of sperm produced and the percent abnormal sperm decrease during several weeks of collection. In other young bulls there may be a dramatic change in just a few collections. Condition of the bull is a factor; many of the “hot new bulls” have been fed hard and are over conditioned. Unfortunately some of this excess fat accumulates in

the scrotum and reduces the ability for the scrotum to cool, thus inhibiting semen production.

Increased body and scrotal temperature from

a fever often results in the production of low quality sperm. The temperature of

the bull’s testicles must be below body temperature. Work by Dr. Saacke at

Virginia Polytechnic Institute showed that from the time a sperm cell

starts to be formed until it is

developed, matured, and ready to be ejaculated is about 70 days. Disruptions in sperm production caused by stress and fever are dependent on how severe and how long the stress lasts. A slight fever for part of a day may show up as lower percent motility and an increase in abnormal sperm in a collection or two. A high fever lasting several days or temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit may result in very poor quality semen taking weeks or months to recover. Remember good quality semen production may take at least 70 days after recovery from stress or illness. Stress caused from injuries also inhibits semen production. Stress may be from illness, injury, hauling long distances, or being taken from the herd and in a new environment. Stress causes the body to produce increased levels of cortisol which is thought to inhibit the hormonal functions necessary for sperm production. Bulls with injured legs or stifles tend to lie around more which causes the scrotum to be tucked between the legs and not allowed to “swing in the breeze” so thermoregulation is hampered. Foot rot and abscesses have a major affect on sperm production. Besides the fever there seems to be a systemic toxicity produced by some bacterial organisms that lower sperm quality. Extreme temperatures related to the weather also affect semen production. Most bulls are adversely affected by the summer heat and humidity. In severe winters the extreme cold may result in scrotal frost bite which hampers thermoregulation. Every year we see bulls with semen that is not good enough to freeze. We explain the facts of sperm production and often hear the bull owner say that he feeds the bull every day and he has never seen him look sick. Most of the time when we see this bull 30 to 70 days later the semen quality is much improved or is now freezable. The bottom line is that your management and

the weather have a major affect on the quality of semen that your bull produces.
