RAIDER FACTSOrigin of the Raiders
In 1984, the MSOE men’s basketball team, coached by Bob Peterson, viewed the film Raiders of the LostArk. They were so thrilled by the movie that they wrote to Hollywood director Steven Spielberg, askingpermission to adopt the name “Raiders” as their team nickname. Spielberg wrote back, granting permission.Previously, MSOE teams carried the nickname “Pats” for St. Patrick, the patron saint of engineers. Since1984, they have been known as the Raiders.
Rowdy Raiders
In 1996-97, the second year of Dan Harris’ administration as director of athletics, SAAC Chairman andbaseball pitcher Greg Beskow dubbed MSOE fans the “Rowdy Raiders.” The name caught on and has beenaround ever since. In 2004 when the Kern Center opened, Harris designated Student Section C, where theRowdy Raiders were seated, as the “Red Sea.” All students in that section traditionally wear the color red.
Roscoe Raider
In 1997, SAAC students sponsored a contest to name the new Raider mascot. The caricature for the Raiderwas developed by the MSOE Marketing and Public Affairs Department and the Olympus Sign Company ofMilwaukee created the costume. The name “Roscoe,” submitted by then-students Sarah Alt ’99 and GregBeskow ’99, emerged as the winning choice. Since that time, the MSOE mascot has been known as “RoscoeRaider.” Many students have played the role of “Roscoe” over the years and it remains a desired positionamong today’s student body.
MSOE Fight Song
The MSOE fight song was written by membersof the MSOE Sound Engineers Pep Band, andwas first played at the groundbreaking ceremonyfor the Kern Center in the spring of 2003. It isplayed whenever MSOE basketball or hockeyteams enter the arena.
On Broadway
A rock and roll tune originally recorded by theDrifters. Since the Kern Center is on Broadway(1245 N. Broadway), the song is played athockey games when the Raiders win.
Colors
MSOE’s colors are red and white. Black trimmay be used on some uniforms. The color red isoften associated with energy, passion, desire, power, intensity and aggression. These are allcharacteristics of an MSOE athlete. White sends a message of simplicity, cleanliness, precision and goodness. Again, this is the image of MSOE athletes.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Dan HarrisDan Harris, MSOE’s director of athletics for 17 years, continues
to lead the Athletics Department with innovative thinking,
enthusiasm and a sense of tradition. Harris is one of the most
tenured college athletic directors in the state of Wisconsin. Relying
on more than 40 years of coaching and collegiate administrative
experience, Harris transformed MSOE’s athletic program into a
vibrant and competitive NCAA Division III program that offers
students more than 20 varsity sports with facilities that rival many
Division I programs.
Under Harris’ direction, the Raiders have claimed 37 conference
championships and produced numerous all-conference athletes,
as well as academic and athletic All-American selections. Harris,
the Raiders’ first full-time athletic director, initiated the growth of
the Athletics Department from a small staff of part-time coaches to
a department comprised of full-time administrators, head coaches
and an athletic trainer. Harris and his dedicated staff have shown
the commitment to student-athlete excellence and increased the
level of competition of the MSOE programs. In 16 seasons, 23
coaches have received conference coach of the year awards.
During the 2010-11 season, MSOE placed second in the
Northern Athletics Conference All-Sports Award standings for men’s
sports. Also, the Raiders finished in the top five for both men’s and
women’s sports in the NAC Sportsmanship Awards standings.
MSOE won conference titles in indoor and outdoor track and field
and finished second in golf and tennis during the past academic
year. The Raiders’ second place finish tied their previous highest
finish which occurred during the 2007-08 school year. Also during
the 2010-11 season, MSOE ice hockey, men’s volleyball and
wrestling each finished second in their respective conferences.
Harris has a long history as a collegiate soccer coach, including
NCAA Division I stints at the Air Force Academy and UW-Milwaukee.
He received hall of fame honors for the seventh time in January
2011 was inducted to the MSOE Athletics Hall of Fame. His
previous inductions include UWM, Concordia-Wisconsin, Nathan
Hale-Ray High School, the Wisconsin Soccer Association,
Milwaukee Kickers and a charter
member of the Wisconsin Soccer
Coaches Association.
Harris began a four-year stint serving
on the NCAA Division III soccer committee
in September 2009. He has served as a
member of the American Volleyball
Coaches’ Association men’s volleyball
Molten Invitational selection committee.
Harris also has chaired the NCAA Div. III
Ice Hockey Committee and has served as
a member of the NCAA Division III
Baseball Committee.
Dedicated to creating opportunities for students to compete in
varsity athletics, Harris was instrumental in forming the new
Midwest Lacrosse Conference that started during the 2009-2010
school year. He served as the conference’s first commissioner.
Harris was instrumental in the founding of the Midwest Collegiate
Hockey Conference and served as that league’s first president. In
recognition of his efforts, the MCHA’s championship trophy has
been named the Harris Cup in his honor.
In 2004, Harris oversaw the opening of the Kern Center, a $31
million, 210,000-square foot recreation, health and wellness
center that provides a home for many of the university’s athletic
teams and fitness facilities for students, faculty and the
community.
Harris received his bachelor’s degree from the University of
Connecticut and a master’s from the University of Southern
California. His experience as an athletic director spans many
levels; beginning with Nathan Hale-Ray High School in Connecticut,
a stint at UW-Milwaukee and Concordia University-Wisconsin
before taking the top post at MSOE in 1995.
Harris and his wife Barbara have two adult children, Mark and
Angela. Mark and his wife Stefanie have three children, Lexi, Cade
and Landon. Dan and Barbara reside in Grafton, Wis.
It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making
SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart.
We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all
for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that
we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future Olympic
wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future
Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO.
It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can
understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25.
But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You
know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students
first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school
applications, MCAT exams and student body petitions. When we
miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We
only let down our teammates, coaches and fans. But the hurt is
still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot,
dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class.
And in that class we are nothing more than students.
It’s about pride—in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our
love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we
walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble.
Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud
of ourselves.
We will forever be what few can claim … college athletes.

WrestlingWRESTLING • COACHES
9
WrestlingWRESTLING • ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
How did MSOE prepare you for the real world?
I certainly learned about time management and
prioritization. But probably most importantly, MSOE enabled
me to learn how to learn. I gained a strong engineering
foundation through the curriculum. More importantly, I
learned how to solve complex problems. In my career, most of
my challenges or projects don’t have solutions in a text book.
Rather, I have to investigate, experiment and become
informed before I can make progress. While at MSOE, I
became more comfortable in those kinds of situations. The
behaviors and habits formed in all those lab hours has really
paid dividends.
What do you miss most about being a Raider?
Competing. Every time I am watching college wrestling, I
wish I could go back! But more than anything I miss the
camaraderie of my teammates. I reflect back often to some of
our accomplishments like beating a school for the first time,
or winning conference.
What was your favorite team to compete against?
My first year or so, we were always considered an
underdog. I guess I loved wrestling any team or opponent that
was perceived to be better. Probably, I’ll always remember
how amped up Coach Morin and my teammates would get
before a Concordia or Lawrence meet. I always seemed to be
a little more intense and focused during those weeks.
Do you have a favorite memory from your MSOEexperience?
Wasn’t exactly my favorite at the time, but a few of us look
back at this one now, and say, “Why did we do that?” After my
first or second season, we got coach a bike to ride when we
went for his famous “LSD” (long slow distance) runs by the
lake. For some reason, the runs got longer and longer when
that bike came around.
Can you share one unique fact about your four years at MSOE?
I will try to help add perspective and appreciation for those
attending MSOE. Before there was the Kern Center, there was
a rented MSOE athletic facility that would be comparable to
the Rocky Balboa gym. Those of us that were in that facility
are truly envious of what you have today!
Do you still play the sport you played at MSOE or playany other sports?
I only wrestle now when I come back for an alumni meet. I
enjoy following college and high school wrestling though and
try to make a few events a year. I look forward to maybe
showing my son some wrestling moves and getting involved
with his youth program someday. I find myself trying to
improve my golf game, now more than anything.
What advice do you have for those consideringcompeting as a Raider?
It’s an experience that you have to try if you’re remotely
interested in competing at that level. Having an outlet from
the classroom and meeting the people that turned into my
core group of friends made me a better student and person.
Anything else you would like to add about MSOE?
I met a lot of life-long friends while at MSOE. My wife and I
still enjoy coming back to watch a meet and catch up with old
friends. I still follow MSOE wrestling online. I want to have an
excuse to go to La Crosse (Wis.) in the spring and cheer on a
Raider or two at Nationals!!
Matt Huset ’03 was the first MSOE wrestler to earn All-American status, gaining the honor in 2003 at 197 pounds. Huset
graduated with honors in 2003 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He garnered numerous accolades on and off the mat
during his time at MSOE, including being named Academic All-American twice. Huset was a four-time conference champion and was
named Lake Michigan Conference Wrestler of the Year in 2003. He had 108 wins in his career and holds the MSOE record for wins in
a season (39 in 2002-03). Huset helped the Raiders win two conference championships (2001 and 2002). He was inducted into the
MSOE Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
Huset currently works for 3M as an engineering supervisor in Menomonie, Wis. for the film manufacturing and supply chain
organization. His first job out of school was also for 3M as a process engineer in Alexandria, Minn.

WrestlingWrestlingWRESTLING • SEASON PREVIEW
Behind a roster of experienced wrestlers and newcomers, the MSOEwrestling team will look to build on their success from last season, which included their first-ever victories over Wisconsin state schools, sending a wrestler to nationals, and a strong finish in conference. Forthe Raiders to reach greater heights, all members of the squad will becounted on during the 2011-12 season.
“Upperclassmen will have to step up and lead by example both inthe practice room and during competitions,” said head coach KevinMorin. “Also, the freshmen will have to make the transition to collegewrestling and continue their winning ways at this level.”
During the 2010-11 season, MSOE went 9-2 in duals for the bestrecord in school history including wins over UW-Oshkosh, UW-EauClaire and UW-Platteville.
“Last year we proved that with hard work we could compete withsome of the elite teams in the state and country,” Morin said. “Thisyear we want to continue to do that even though we lost four startersfrom last year’s team to graduation.”
Senior co-captain Jake Narveson (141-pound weight class) becamethe seventh Raider to compete at the NCAA Division III Championshipsafter he earned an at-large bid to the national event. Narveson got thebid after his fourth place finish at the Great Lakes Regional. In 2010-11, he won the Northern Wrestling Conference (NWC) title and led theteam in wins (38) and falls (22). He also holds the MSOE career recordfor falls (54) and stands third in reversals (54).
“Jake now knows what it is like to compete with the elite wrestlersand he realizes that he is in that category,” Morin said. “His experienceat the Nationals last year has made him hungry to get back there and prove that he is one of those elite wrestlers who can become anall-American.”
Junior co-captain Caleb Staub (184 pounds) won the conferencetitle last season as did junior Steve Nguyen at the 285-pound weightclass. Junior Joshua Wengerter recorded the second most wins for aRaider in 2010-11 with 22 and was conference runner-up at 149pounds. Senior Adam Chaulklin will provide leadership for the teamand will compete at 174 pounds.
“Last year, the guys began believing that they could compete withanyone,” Morin said. “They realized that everyone had a role on theteam and if they fulfilled their role we would be successful. Some ofthe duals that we won last year were won as a result of individualvictories of guys that had big performances when we needed them tostep up. We will need that again this year.”
Juniors Austin Binish and Matt Ostovich each have had success intheir two seasons at MSOE and Morin believes each is capable ofwinning 30 matches and placing at multiple tournaments. Ostovich
recorded 21 wins last season and finished second at the NWCtournament, while Binish had the third most near falls on the teamwith 16.
The sophomores have the opportunity to show off their hard work onthe mat this season. The wrestler with the highest win percentage fromlast year was sophomore Dallas Schurg who was 19-5 and placed firstat the Citrus Invitational. Sophomore Austin Karls returns from aninjury that ended his 2010-11 season early. Karls will push Nguyen forthe starting spot at 285 pounds.
“This competition within the practice room will make them bothbetter for competition,” Morin said.
Sophomores Marcus Rokosh, Andrew Dorman and Kyle Perea willlook to build on their experience gained during their first seasons.
There are a number of newcomers who will help the Raiders achievetheir goals during the 2011-12 season.
“This is one of the most talented freshmen classes that we haveever had,” Morin said. “Their skills and work ethic are outstanding. They will have a major impact on this team. Their youth combined withthe experience of the other wrestlers gives the Raiders every reason tobe optimistic about the upcoming season.”
Freshman Luke Gaeth qualified for the state tournament in Illinoisand is expected to start at 125 pounds for MSOE. Also, freshmen NickMiceli and Justin Wolfenden will battle to start at the 133-poundweight class. Wolfenden finished second at the Wisconsin state meetwhile Miceli was All-County in New York three times. Newcomer PeterKootstra placed fourth at the Illinois state meet and will likely be theteam’s starter at 165 pounds. Freshman William Pedersen willcompete for the starting position at 174 pounds and freshman BrianTrader will add depth at 141 pounds.
Expectations for this year’s team are multifaceted. “Work hard andcontinue to improve throughout the year and peek at the end of theseason at the conference tournament, NCAA Regional tournament(which is the qualifier for the National tournament) and send multipleguys to the National tournament and bring home some all-Americans,”Morin said.
The schedule is tough for MSOE and begins Nov. 12 at the KnoxTournament in Galesburg, Ill. The Raiders host the MSOE Invitational atthe Kern Center Dec. 3. The NWC Tournament will take place inSheboygan, Wis., Feb. 18.
“Frankly almost all of our events are challenging,” Morin said. “ThePete Wilson Invitational (Jan. 27-28) at Wheaton College is generallyregarded as one of the toughest tournaments in the country. TheConcordia Open (Nov. 19) is also a very tough early seasontournament.”

This 210,000-square-foot recreation, athletic, health and wellness facility exemplifies MSOE’s philosophy of a well-
rounded university experience.
This award-winning, contemporary brick and glass design, highlighted by a glass ellipse and running track that is
cantilevered over the street has become an icon in Milwaukee. The Kern Center’s five levels contain an Ice Arena, an
Arena for basketball and volleyball, Field House for a variety of sports, running track, two-story Fitness Center with
weights and cardio machines, Wrestling Room, classrooms, offices and parking.
The Kern Center provides students with ample access to fitness, whether they are participating in NCAA athletics,
intramural and club sports or individual fitness programs. It also is home to MSOE counselors, wellness workshops, the
Health Center and the Servant-Leadership Office.
The Kern Center was a privately funded $31 million project named after its major contributor, the Waukesha-based
Robert & Patricia Kern Family Foundation. Dr. Robert Kern is a university Regent. Other major donors include Milwaukee
businessman and Regent Eckhart Grohmann and his wife, Ischi, who donated funds to buy the land.
Besides MSOE students, faculty and staff, memberships are available to alumni and the larger community. For
membership information, call (414) 277-2850.
