The Trial Gardens at Costa Farms in Miami, FL (Zone 10) provide an opportunity

to evaluate plant performance during two different growing seasons. The gar-

dens were first constructed in 2008 on half an acre of land and within the first

year were expanded to a full acre. In 2011, we added one additional acre of

space that is going to add to the overall breadth of our program and offer an ex-

citing and diverse array of evaluation options.

The gardens are the public division of the department of Research and Develop-

ment. If you are interested in learning more about the garden please e-mail Dr.

Kate Santos at [email protected].

Smart Tags Want to access more information about the varieties in the

gardens this year? Featured on labels in the partner beds

are smart tags. These tags can be snapped via your smart-

phone and instantly take you to our revamped website,

which now allows you to view pictures and data of each vari-

ety, make comments and rate your favorites. And with Mi-

crosoft’s Tag App, you can maximize utilization of our web-

site right from the gardens.

The Tag app works on Windows Phone 7 and 7.5, Windows Mobile, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and J2ME phones. To get the reader, type in http://gettag.mobi on your phone's

web browser or find it in your mobile marketplace.

Performance Evaluations are intended to simulate what the consumer would observe

after purchasing and planting the product in his/her own garden. Plant

material is evaluated every two weeks in the trial garden by the Research

and Development team. In addition to photography, the following infor-

mation is recorded during each data collection interval:

Frost Protection

When temperatures threaten

to drop close to freezing, the

landscape beds are covered

with frost blankets and/or the

overhead sprinklers are run.

The row beds are covered with

hoops and plastic.

These measures help protect

the majority of the plant mate-

rial in the garden. Extremely

cold-sensitive varieties can

show some signs of cold dam-

age, as was observed in many

of the coleus and New Guinea

impatien varieties after a 31F

drop January 3.

New

We installed 40 additional row beds and four hanging basket frames

that will serve as our onsite blind comparison trial fields. The objec-

tive of this area is to evaluate genera side-by-side based on form and

color, across breeders, series and starter form (seed, vegetative cut-

ting, etc.) to ensure that the ultimate selections are based solely on the merit

of plant performance throughout the trial. Each variety is identified with a

numeric code to ensure that any preexisting bias to a particular se-

ries, breeder, or form is removed during performance evaluations and

selections. The two genera selected for the blind comparison trials

this season are petunias (row beds) and calibrachoas (baskets).

Designer Combinations The Goal:

Develop a premium combination that is eye-catching and unique.

The Challenge:

Breakaway from the three compo-nent petunia, calibrachoa and ver-bena combinations and…

Design combinations that:

- Have 4-5 components

- Mix seed and vegetative

- Mix foliage with color

New

We are trialing the Woolly Pocket vertical gardening system.

Vertical gardens are organized systems of plants that grow ver-

tically up walls, fences and other vertical surfaces. They are a

great way to show off plants, cover unsightly walls, create pri-

vacy in courtyards and increase air quality in any space.

Woolly Pockets are lightweight, flexible, breathable, modular

gardening containers. The pockets can be used indoors and

outdoors, on horizontal surfaces and vertical surfaces, and they

have built-in moisture barriers to protect walls, floors and fur-

niture.

Vertical Gardening

Concept Gardens Gardens are different for everyone, from those that meander through

loosely organized beds under a canopy of sun or shade, to the structure

and function of a formal garden, to gardening in a myriad of containers on

balconies, decks, or patios. Wherever and whatever the home gardener de-

fines as their garden, our goal is to ensure they will be successful with it.

Gardening success is in part defined by selecting strong genetics and also

in part by understanding the destination the plants will be

grown in. Our new concept gardens enable us to trial plants

in different simulated destinations to help us define what

plants will work best in what areas.

New

A gateway to any garden is the garden center. Appeal, function, and/or familiarity are all

drivers in consumer plant selection, but ultimately how the plant looks on the shelf is one

of the most important factors that affect whether or not the plant is sold. Few large scale

trials are conducted to evaluate how well different genetics hold up under tight spacing,

irregular watering cycles and frequent handling – yet all criterion are important to con-

sider and evaluate when selecting new genetics. As part of our expanded program, we

will now include a simulated retail trial evaluation component with the same genetics as

are in the garden, but grown in breeder-defined retail containers. These genetics were

moved out to the retail area the second week of January and evaluated over a period of

two weeks for longevity and performance.

Retail Trials

Page 19: 2011-2012 - Research And Development | Costa Farms, LLC

19

Closed Trials The first phase of our closed garden

evaluation beds was installed this year.

The objective of this area is to serve as a

continuation to our closed production

trial program, by offering a testing site for

breeders who wish to evaluate garden

performance for pre-released genetics.

The design incorporates fixed with living

walls around the perimeter and interior,

to enable air to flow within each zone. To

allow time for the living walls to grow in,

closed plant trials will not commence un-

til 2013. This space is currently being

used for public trials, which visitors are

welcome to explore.
