Head Coach CAREER HIGHLIGHS -145-33 career record (.815) -2010 DIII National Champion -2010 National Coach of the Year -Two-time WIAC Coach of the Year HEAD COACH BOB SEMLING Over the past six seasons, the 2010 NABC and D3hoops.com Coach of the Year, Bob Semling, has directed one of the premier programs in Division III, guiding the Pointers to their third national title in seven seasons with a 78-73 victory over Williams College in 2010. Semling has posted a 145-33 record in his first six seasons at the helm for UW- Stevens Point and has won three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular- season and four tournament titles. This summer Semling was also named as one of the nation’s top 25 non-Division I coaches according to collegeinsider.com’s Jason Belzer. Coach Semling has twice been named the WIAC Coach of the Year, most recently following 2008-09 campaign. In 2010, Semling earned National Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Pointers to a 29-4 finish. The Pointers have appeared in the top 10 of the D3hoops.com poll 36 straight times and have been in the top 25 for 75 straight polls. The Pointers ranked in the top five 10 of the 14 polls conducted in 2009-10. Along with the 145-33 record, the Pointers have achieved some amazing statistical feats, leading NCAA Division III in both free-throw percentage and fewest turnovers per game in two of Semling’s first three seasons. UW-Stevens Point set an NCAA Division III record in 2006-07 by shoot ing 82.3 percent after leading the country at 79.2 percent in 2005-06. UW-Stevens Point was the only schools among 1,187 NCAA and NAIA programs to shoot better than 80.1 percent at the free-throw line. The Pointers also averaged just 10.2 turnovers per game in 2007-08 (third in the nation) and committed just 8.5 turnovers per game the previous season. The Pointers also had a NCAA Division III best 1.54 assist-to- turnover ratio. Having served as an assistant coach with the Pointers’ back-to-back NCAA Division III championship teams in 2003-04 and 2004- 05, Semling took over the reins in 2005-06 from Jack Bennett and guided a relatively fresh group of players back near the top of the WIAC standings with a third-place league finish and 17-10 overall record. Semling is actually in his second stint with the Pointers’ coaching staff, sandwiching both tenures around eight years at the Division I level. Semling was an assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point under Bob Parker from 1988-95 as the Pointers posted a 127-63 record, including a 27-2 mark in 1991-92. During Semling’s first tenure at UW-Stevens Point, the Pointers won two conference championships and made two NAIA national tournament appearances. He then spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at UW-Green Bay and one year as the Director of Basketball Operations at New Mexico before returning to UW-Stevens Point for the 2003-04 season. While at UW-Green Bay, Semling helped the Phoenix to a Mid-Continent Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance in his first season. A Merrill, Wis., native, Semling was a three- year starter at quarterback at UW-Eau Claire from 1977-79. As a student at UWEC, he assisted with Ken Anderson and the men’s basketball team, making NAIA Final Four appearances in each of his final two seasons. Dernbach is in his first season with the UWSP men’s basketball program afer serving as the director of basketball operations at Northern Illinois University for the last three years. He will serve as the top assistant for head coach Bob Semling and will assist in all aspects of the program.

Prior to NIU, Dernbach spent two seasons at George Mason University.

During Dernbach’s time at George Mason, the Colonials posted back-to-back 20-win seasons, captured the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. GMU’s 2009 recruiting class was tabbed the No. 1 ranked non-BCS class in the nation, and its existing players helped build an APR score that was rated among the top 10 percent in the NCAA Division I ranks.

Prior to his tenure at George Mason, Dernbach served a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., where he was the primary recruiter and helped mentor two all-conference players and two league rookies of the year.

aSSt. CoaCH Kent dernBaCHDernbach was a two-year letterwinner (2001-03) at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men compiled a 46-8 record with two CCIW (College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) championships and a berth in the 2002 NCAA Division III Final Four during Dernbach’s career.

Following his playing career, became an assistant coach at North Central High School in Paddock Lake, Wis. He occupied the same role at Whetstone High School in Columbus, Ohio, during the 2004-05 season.

The Almond, Wis., native graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and psychology from Carthage in May 2004 and completed his master’s degree in physical activity and educational services from The Ohio State University in June 2006.

Dernbach is married to the former Amanda Turzinski.

Dane Seckar-Anderson is in his first year as a graduate assistant coach for the Pointers.

The Oshkosh native played at the collegiate level for UW-Oshksoh and University of North Dakota. He was named a first team All-WIAC performer his senior season along with third team All-West Region by D3hoops.com in 2009.

In his final year with the Titans in 2009, he started all 27 games and averaged 31.5 minutes per game, third-most on the team. He averaged 16.1 points per game and pulled in 173 rebounds, 6.4 per contes.

aSSt. CoaCH dane SeCKar-anderSonSeckar-Anderson recently completed his undergraduate studies at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a degree in speech communication. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree at UW-Stevens Point in public relations.

aSSt. CoaCH SCott HoelzelScott Hoelzel is in his first year as graduate assistant coach for the Pointers in 2011-12.

Hoelzel appeared in 100 games, starting 60, for UW-Stevens Point in his four-year career. He was a member of the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championship team along with three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship teams.

For his career, he averaged 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds and ranks second in school history in highest field goal percentage in a season at 67.6 percent.

The Kaukauna native is currently pursuing his master’s degree in business administration through University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He recently completed his undergraduate degree at UWSP.
