Dear Friends:

Welcome to a season of rebirth for the Carolina Theatre. Throughout the summer and fall, our historic theater and modern cinema complex have undergone a transformation of grand magnitude, the most significant in nearly two decades.

The plaster in Fletcher Hall has been restored, and there’s new paint in every corner of the building. The entire facility has been fitted with new, historic custom carpeting designed from a pattern authentic to the 1920s, when Durham Auditorium was built. We’ve upgraded the sound in the cinemas, and supplemented our speakers for live events.

It’s a rare opportunity to remake a facility, and one we’ve taken full advantage of. I am incredibly grateful to the City of Durham for its efforts to preserve – and improve – this important complex which we operate on their behalf.

A remade Carolina Theatre deserves a season that exceeds your expectations. I venture to say that this Star Series is beyond anything we’ve presented in the past, and I trust that you’ll find something that inspires you within this brochure.

This is just the beginning. We are still pursuing additional performances throughout the year that we’ll announce at first opportunity.

My commitment is to give Durham the Carolina Theatre it deserves. And we’re on our way.

Chamber Orchestra of the TriangleConsidered one of the finest professional ensembles in North Carolina and the Southeast today, the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle boasts an elite corps of musicians presenting a well-chosen and unusual repertoire that delights audiences and evokes high praise from critics. The Durham SavoyardsCreated in 1963, Durham’s amazing homegrown theatre troupe, The Durham Savoyards, has brought fun and beauty to the Triangle by presenting the brilliant works of William S. Gilbert & Arthur S. Sullivan. For nearly 50 years, this hardworking group of local theater lovers has entertained a community and greatly enriched the local arts scene. Durham Symphony OrchestraThe Durham Symphony is a semi-professional orchestra composed of a combination of volunteers and professionals, all classically trained. Throughout its 36 year history, the Durham Symphony’s mission has been to foster the appreciation of music through the production of high-quality music for and by the residents of Durham and surrounding communities. The Symphony’s programming reflects a commitment to familiar, American, and popular music. Triangle Youth BalletWith a passion for training the next generation of dancers and instilling a deeper understanding of dance arts in our community, the Triangle Youth Ballet offers aspiring dancers workshops and performance opportunities. Founded in 1995 with the specific mission to produce family performances with local talent, the company quickly grew into one of the area’s top dance schools. This season, the troupe will perform The Nutcracker on December 10-11, 2011 and Peter and the Wolf as a part of our Arts Discovery Series on April 26, 2012.

Full Frame Documentary Film FestivalThe Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is an annual international event dedicated to the theatrical exhibition of non-fiction cinema. Simply put, Retrofantasma is a monthly double feature of the greatest scary - and fun - movies ever made.

Retrofantasma Classics Series: A monthly double-feature of genre films from the 1950s through the early 1970s. From the infamous gimmickry of William Castle to the giant bug films of the 1950s, some of these films are considered masterpieces. Others are simply great “bad” movies.

Directions to the TheatreFrom I-85 NORTH or SOUTHHwy. 70: Take “Durham Downtown” exit, Exit #177-A and follow Hwy. 15-501 Business South (Mangum St.) for approximately 1 mile. Turn Right onto Morgan St. The Carolina Theatre is 3 blocks on the left, across from the parking garage.

From I-40 EAST (Burlington, Greensboro)From I-40 East, merge on to I-85 North. Take Exit #172 and merge onto the Durham Freeway (Hwy. 147 South) for approximately 4.4 miles. Take exit #13 (Chapel Hill St) and turn left at the traffic light. Continue for .6 miles. Make a left on Foster Street. Make a quick left onto Morgan St. The theatre will be on your left.

From I-40 WEST (Raleigh, Wilmington)Take Durham Freeway exit (Hwy. 147 North) for approximately 5 miles. Take exit #12-B (Roxboro St./Mangum St.) and turn right at first traffic light onto Roxboro St., following signs for Downtown. Continue until you pass under a bridge. Go ahead and get into the left lane. After you go under the bridge, you will come to a stoplight. After going through the light, merge left one lane. Continue to the left on Morgan Street. The Carolina will be on the left.

From Highway 15-501 NORTH (Chapel Hill)When highway divides near South Square, take Hwy. 15-501 Bypass North/Duke University. Follow for approximately 4 miles to I-85 North. Continue on I-85 North for approximately 3 miles. Take “Durham Downtown” exit, Exit #177-A. Follow directions for I-85 above.
