Chris Rhodes11th YearEdinboro ‘95

Former Edinboro All­American ChrisRhodes was appointed the head swim­ming coach at his alma mater in Octoberof 2001.

He competed for Edinboro from 1991­95, earning All­American honors in 1993­94and 1994­95 as a member of freestyle relayteams. He also earned All­PSAC honorsand set a school record as a member ofthe 200 freestyle relay team. That relayteam finished second at the NCAA DivisionII National Championships and set a con­ference record that stood for six years.

A key part of legendary teams while aswimmer at Edinboro, Rhodes’ goal sincetaking over has been simple yet ambitious­­ to return the Fighting Scots to a promi­nent spot in the Pennsylvania StateAthletic Conference.

Rhodes has spent his first seven yearsbuilding the foundation, and he has begunto see some of the fruits of his efforts thelast few years.

A number of young swimmers havequalified for the PSAC Championships, andZak Clifford earned honorable mention All­American honors in 2010 in the 200­yardbackstroke.

Both the men’s and women’s teamsenjoyed national rankings during the 2010­11 season, with the men rising to No. 4 inthe NCAA Division II poll and the women

to No. 11. Fighting Scots swimmers set multiple

school records at the PSAC Championshipslast year, with the men taking third placeand the women seventh at the conferencemeet. The third place ranking for the menwas the strongest performance for theFighting Scots since 1994 when the teamtook second. Tony Romanini led the squadby setting two individual school records atthe PSAC Championships.

On the women’s side, Marie Nedleyclosed her collegiate career by qualifyingfor the NCAA Championships in SanAntonio, her third trip to Nationals whileat Edinboro. There she finished 18th in the1,650­yard freestyle, 25th in the 1,000­yardfree and 35th in the 500­yard free.

Academics have also been a majorpart of Rhodes’ agenda. His women’steams have earned All­Academic honorsevery semester but one, and the men’steam has earned similar honors.

Rhodes began his coaching career asan assistant swimming coach at TitusvilleHigh School in 1996­97, then moved on toAshland University, one of the top pro­grams on the Division II level, as an assis­tant swimming coach while completingwork on his master's degree in Reading,which he received in August 1999. Hecoached a two­time national championwhile at Ashland.

Rhodes returned to westernPennsylvania as the assistant swimmingcoach at Oil City Area High School for the1999­2000 season. He has also served asthe head coach of the StrokeDevelopment Camp at WestminsterCollege. In addition, he has been aReading Specialist in the Oil City AreaSchool District.

Rhodes graduated from Edinboro inDecember 1995 with a bachelor's degreein Elementary Education and EarlyChildhood Education. He and his wifeStephanie reside in Edinboro, along withtheir sons, Greysen (3), and Griffin, bornMarch 31, 2009. He is a member of theCollege Swim Coaches Association ofAmerica and the American SwimmingCoaches Association.

Edinboro Swimmers Earn All-Academic HonorsThe Edinboro women’s swimming team was honored by the College SwimmingCoaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a Scholar All­American team for the 2011spring semester. To qualify, the team had to post a GPA of 3.0 and all athletes whocompeted in any competition were included in the calculations. The women’s teamhad a cumulative GPA of 3.10. In addition to the team honors, four swimmers werehonored by the CSCAA as Individual/Honorable Mention Scholar All­Americans.

To qualify for the individual award, the swimmers must have achieved a “B” timestandard in their respective national championship and have a GPA of 3.50. An All­PSAC honoree in the 200­yard medley relay, Darren Suroviec led the way with a 3.8GPA. Drew Sapp, who earned All­PSAC honors in the 1,650­yard freestyle and 800­yard freestyle relay, is majoring in Sport/Recreation Administration and has a 3.6 GPA.

Katie Close, a Public Relations major with a 3.5 GPA, earned All­PSAC honors as amember of the 400­yard medley relay team, which also set a school record at thePSAC Championships. Kate Marschner, a Criminal Justice major with a 3.7 GPA, wasalso a member of that record­setting relay team. She also earned All­PSAC accoladesin the 200­yard breaststroke.
