“It was because of the extraordinary experiences and mentorship I received at O’Dowd that I believed in myself

enough even to apply to the Ivy League schools and Stanford. And it was only due to the extraordinary, individual

guidance I received that I felt brave enough to choose Yale.”Raquel Zepeda, Class of 2010

Each year, nearly

of our

students are admitted to the University of California system, though many choose to attend a private school .

the presiDential merit scholarship prog ram

The Presidential Merit Scholarship is the most prestigious academic award given to incoming freshman students. Each year, the Bishop O’Dowd High School admissions committee selects a limited number of Presidential Merit Scholars from among more than 600 applicants to the school. Presidential Merit Scholars are chosen based on their exceptional academic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership skills, and community service commitment. There is no application process for the Presidential Merit Scholarship. Students are selected based on the qualifications listed above along with the High School Placement Test scores.

Presidential Merit Scholars receive $1,500 each year for a total award of $6,000 over their four-year careers at O’Dowd. In addition to the monetary award, Presidential Merit Scholars are automatically placed in honors math, English and social studies courses. In order to retain the scholarship, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.

“The coaching and teaching philosophy I learned while playing and coaching rugby at Cal is centered on building a culture of leadership. I challenge my kids to be leaders: ‘Do you make your teammates and classmates better?’ ‘Do you raise standards?’ I love working with

“This new generation of students lives in a world where the information landscape is networked, digital, and

overwhelmingly abundant. It essentially comes down to the notion that laptops provide a platform that

revolutionizes the way students and teachers interact. Technology teaches students to cope and to thrive in the

“Our counselors are always looking for the best ‘fit’ for their students as individuals. This helps

students and families think outside of the box, or encouraging students to visit campuses they’ve never before considered. The result is that our

students love where the go, and they feel supported through the process.”

Fran WarmerdamDirector of Counseling

At O’Dowd, we offer our students exemplary academic, college, and personal counseling. Working together, our educators and counselors guide students to match skills and interests to their goals and their college and career preferences.

Starting in the summer before freshman year, our counselors begin meeting with our students to understand their strengths and abilities. By forming a relationship with each student, we develop a unique personalized academic plan to help the student achieve set goals.

college counseling: Growing the FutureAt O’Dowd, we integrate college and career counseling to assist students in discovering who they are and who they are becoming. Our professional counselors guide them to thoughtful choices. We work diligently to match our students to the colleges that are best for them. In addition to individualized college counseling, our personalized process includes these supportive programs:

College Boot Camp

College information nights

Financial aid seminars

NCAA scholarship guidance

Naviance/Family Connection

college Boot camp

As part of the O’Dowd Summer Academy Enrichment Program, students may participate in an intensive workshop geared towards helping rising seniors plan and complete their college applications and write their college essays. O’Dowd counselors guide students through the myriad of application types and work with students on polishing their college resume. As a special bonus, our students will hear directly from O’Dowd graduates about their college experiences.

This on-going partnership supports our students as they navigate high school, explore college options, request letters of recommendation, manage the college applications process, and graduate as confidently successful emerging adults.

These professionals work in concert with a network of facu l t y, c ampus ministers, administrators, coaches, and tutors. They are the foundation of a support network of one adult available to every ten students that ensures your student will grow and thrive at O’Dowd.

“My counselors were with me through the entire college application process. With their guidance, the Naviance

college program made it easy to manage my transcript, letters of recommendation and other necessities of the application process. The day before my Stanford application was due, the Common App had a problem uploading my letters of recommendation. Not only was my counselor there, but a team of counselors was there, to make sure that all my

materials got in on time.”Peter Counts, Class of 2011
