2009-10 SEASON IN REVIEWNEED FOR SPEEDFirst-year head coach Paul Westhead wasted little time implementing his fastbreak off ense and full-court pressure defense, as the run-and-gun system provided immediate victories at McArthur Court.

The Ducks fi nished the season with an 18-16 record, the program’s highest win total since the 2004-05 campaign, and were invited to participate in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament – the team’s fi rst postseason appearance since 2007.

Westhead’s infl uence was apparent immediately as Oregon’s scoring off ense ranked in the top-5 of the nation for the majority of the season. Oregon fi nished the 2009-10 season averaging 81.4 points per game, second in the country behind Oral Roberts (85.1 ppg). The Ducks’ scoring average was the fourth best in program history (best since 1981), as Oregon sank a new UO and Pac-10 record 284 three-pointers.

Oregon began 2009-10 with a 9-3 non-conference record, the program’s best start to a season since 2005-06. The Ducks didn’t have the same luck in the Pac-10 Conference, tying for sixth in the standings with a league record of 7-11.

But UO’s overall record of 16-15 put the team in position for an invite to the 2010 WNIT as Oregon advanced to the third round with wins over Eastern Washington and New Mexico before falling to eventual champion and fellow Pac-10 member, California.

FULL-COURT PRESSUREOregon’s high-powered, full-court pressure style of play was a welcome change for the 2009-10 Ducks as veteran guards Taylor Lilley and Micaela Cocks fl ourished, while sophomore Amanda Johnson emerged as a force in the post. Juniors Nicole Canepa and Victoria Kenyon averaged career highs in scoring and rebounding, while sophomore point guard Nia Jackson surfaced as one of the premier point guards in the Pac-10. The Ducks’ main struggle during the season was a short bench as Westhead often limited his rotation to seven players.

Lilley, who followed her senior season by signing a free-agent contract with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, averaged a team-leading 17.7 points per game and was named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team after a record-breaking season.

Westhead’s off ense suited the 3-point threat as Lilley fi nished her senior season setting the UO records for 3-pointers in a single game (9), season (124) and career (270). Lilley’s 124 three-pointers during the 2009-10 season led the country, and ranked third all-time in NCAA single-season history. The total was also a new Pac-10 single-season record, as Lilley became the fi rst player in conference history to reach triple digits from behind the arc.

Cocks was named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team after averaging a career-high 14.2 points per game, while making a menace of herself at the free-throw line shooting 86.5 percent (96-of-111).

Joining the veteran guards in Oregon’s starting fi ve was Jackson, who returned

to the fl oor after a year of rehabilitation from knee surgery. The Ducks’ starting point guard averaged 10.5 points per game and led Oregon in fi eld goal percentage (.467) as well as 121 assists, 83 steals and 100

makes and 131 trips to the free-throw line.

Sophomore forward Amanda Johnson emerged to average 12.7 points per game, while leading the squad with 8.5 rebounds per game and 11 double-doubles.

Finalizing the starting lineup was Victoria Kenyon. The key to Westhead’s full-court pressure defense with the job of pressuring the inbound pass, Kenyon thrived in Westhead’s system averaging career highs in scoring

(7.1 ppg) and rebounding (4.8 rpg). Kenyon also led the Ducks shooting .435 (37-of-85) from 3-point range.

Off the bench, Nicole Canepa averaged career highs scoring 8.8 points and grabbing 4.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore wing Jasmin Holliday shot 46.0 percent from the fl oor and averaged 6.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

RECORD BREAKERSWesthead’s high-scoring off ense was a welcome sight at Mac Court. The Ducks reached the 100-point

plateau on three occasions, scoring the most points (2,767) in program history.

The Ducks’ full-court style produced 1,351 rebounds per game, a mark that ranks third in program history as well as 322 assists, a total that lists fi fth in program history.

UO’s fast-paced off ense totaled a program-record 2,354 fi eld goal attempts, while the Ducks set Oregon and Pac-10 records by knocking down 284 three-point fi eld goals and attempting 799. The Ducks also tied a program record winning 14 games at historic Mac Court.

In addition, Oregon’s 119-112 loss at Arizona became the highest scoring game involving a Pac-10 team, and the Ducks’112 points was the highest scoring total for a losing team from the Pac-10.

Individually, Oregon’s Taylor Lilley demolished records from behind the arc. Her 124 three-pointers led the country, and was the third-best single-season 3-point total in NCAA history. Lilley’s 601 points ranks fi fth in single-season history, and the sharpshooter ‘s 270 career 3-pointers set a new Oregon record and rank third in the Pac-10 record books.

In addition to Lilley leading the Ducks averaging 17.7 points per game, Amanda

Johnson’s team-leading 290 rebounds tied for ninth in the UO single-season record

book. Nia Jackson’s 83 steals ranks sixth in program history.

Lilley and Nicole Canepa also tied the Oregon single-game mark for points in a game with 38 on two diff erent occasions. Lilley dropped 38 on March 23 in a WNIT second round victory over New Mexico, marking the highest point total an Oregon player has scored in a postseason game.

Canepa scored 38 in the record-shattering
