Excerpt from With Custer at the Death,
by Robert Burke
With the exception of I Troops last minutearrival at the north end of South Knoll,Custers realigned defense was firmly
established by the time the Indians launchedtheir first organized and all-out attack at 4:54.Said Wooden Leg afterward: The troopsextended themselves along the ridge.Held by Troops I, E, C, and F, the defenseline ran for nearly 1,600 yards southwardalong much of the Greasy Grass ridge-line.The headquarters detachment and L Troopremained on the Knoll itself as combatreserve. Directly behind the line, to thenortheastwhich was clear of hostileswere gathered the horse-holders and mounts. An Indian female named Pretty White Buffalo
stated: The attackers who were left, stillin large numbers, moved back from the riverand waited for the next attack.By now virtually all of the tribal bandscollectively some 2,400 bravesweregathered at distances averaging roughlya half-mile from Custers strongpoint. TheWolf Tooth group, a mixed bag of Siouxand Cheyenne, were on North Hill, whilethe Agency Cheyenne of Lame White Mandominated the lower slopes of Greasy GrassRidge. The greatest concentration was in the south.
There a solid wall of Indians extendedacross a 1,000 yard front. Nearest to theriver was Two Moon with the Non-AgencyCheyenne, Arapahoe and Gros Ventres. Totheir right stood Crazy Horse and the Non-Agency Oglala, the Brule, and Assiniboin.Next to them was Low Dog and the AgencyOglala, then Gall, leading half the Hunkpapaplus all the Blackfoot and Sans Arc. Finally,on the slopes of Upland Ridge, was CrowKing with the remaining Hunkpapa, Santee,
Yankton, Minniconju, and Two Kettle. SaidCrow King: The Indian chiefs would givethe Hi-Yi-Yi [war cry] in a high pitch everytime they charged. When this cry is given itis a command to all the warriors to watchthe chief and follow his instructions. Theneach chief rushed his horse against the white
soldiers, and all the warriors did the same. When the signal was given at 4:54, thetribesmen had a considerable distance tocross, so the possibility of surprise was lost.At first Custers men simply stood and waitedas the wave of Indians came toward them. When they got within range, the soldiersunleashed a torrent of lead that shattered thecharge like a breakwater. The attackers thenno longer came all at once, but in a series ofsuccessive rushes. Wehad them surrounded, said Two Moon, and first
the Sioux and then theCheyenne would chargethem. In our first bigcharge we had all sweptin together.Gall and other Indiansstated later there werefive such battering ramcharges from the south;and quite possibly anequal number from theopposite side of the hill, each of which were metby numbers of defensivevolleys. One of theattackers noted that onlyafter they actually hadreached the slopes of theGreasy Grass did thetroops become provokedenough to fire, and thewarriors were then forcedto beat a hasty retreat.

Dear Fellow Wargamers:
Welcome to a new decade of wargaming! This year we are launching a new series of folio games. For the first groupof 18 games we are focusing on updating many of our SPI classic titles as well as adding some new scenarios. We haveupdated the original game systems for added historicity. For example, we updated the 19 thcentury systems so that theNapoleonic battles will be at brigade level (rather than the mixed brigade and division level of the originals) and therewill be a better treatment of the role of each arm (infantry, cavalry, and artillery). These games are packaged in the
traditional folio folder in zip-lock protective sleeves and most will be priced at $19.95. They will make a great place tostart newcomers to the hobby as well as provide an abundance of quick play choices for veteran gamers.
The magazines just get better and better. Were looking ahead to an increased page count next year so there will beeven more room for more maps and articles. Weve also improved our special combined subscription deal: get both S&Tand World at Warfor 1 year each (12 total units; Special Editions counts as two units) for $209 (US rate); thats $150 offthe cover price so it is like getting 5 free units!
We also have another book (With Custer at the Death) to release in November after the great reception given ourfirst two books. Well continue this new tradition of providing an abundance of maps in our books along with the in-
depth analysis.
We are launching a line of computer games based on our board games. The first two, Napoleons Last BattlesandOperation Olympicare in production and will ship in November. Were beginning to play test the Driveseries (Drive onStalingrad, Kurskand Moscow) and there are more computer games in the works. Hurtgen: Hells Forestand a new edition of Wacht am Rheinscheduled for early 2011. Weve added more proposalsfor future boxed games to the pledge list (marked with a NEW label). Struggle for the Galactic Empirehas been agreat hit and the next science fiction game, Free Mars!, is heading into development. Our Special Editions are movingforward with the pending publication of the updated/expanded Russian Civil Warin S&T#267 and Famous Divisions:Gross Deutschland in World at War #20.

WACHT AM RHEIN
On 16 December 1944, Hitlers armies sud-denly seemed to regain the insurmountable skill
that brought them victory in the first years of thewar. For months Hitler had worked to reorganizeand re-equip the beaten divisions streaming backtoward Germany. A massive surprise counterat-tackcode-named Wacht am Rheinagainstthe weak Ardennes sector of the American frontwas prepared.
Wacht am Rhein, is a tactical simulation ofthat enormous battle. The 2,380 counters repre-sent every formation, at company and battalionlevels, which fought in both armies. Infantry, armor, anti-tank, recon, engineer, assault gun, howitzer, rocket, parachute, ranger, glider andheadquarters are all included. The four maps
are an accurate representation of the Ardennes.Compiled from 1944 German staff maps and1943-44 1:50,000 US Ar my maps, they showprimary and secondary roads, trails and otherterrain in relation to their suitability for armorand infantry. Towns and villages, bastions of theAmerican defense, as well as creeks and rivers, which cant be crossed by vehicles without abridge, are accurately positioned.
Players can use single maps for smallscenarios, or fight a campaign game that utilizesall four maps and portrays all three weeks of thecrisis. In it, the Germans race to attack in the
face of ever-increasing concentrations of Alliedinfantry, armor and air power. Extensive supply, weather and air power rules are included.
WaRhas undergone modification to itscombat, artillery and supply subsystems in orderto more accurately depict tactical warfare. Anexploitation mode has been created for mecha-nized units to take advantage of breakthroughsduring the combat phase. That movement ismixed with the opponents to recreate the fluiditythat existed during the first week. Further chang-es include the addition of high-ground vantagepoints that enable units to more effectively spotfor artillery, as well as constricted terrain, which
represents steep gullies and ravines. Addition-ally, with this reprint, certain game processeshave been streamlined to further speed play. AQuick Play Rules set is now included that allowsplay without as much procedural detail as the fullsystem. That facilitates learning the system rulesand speeds play.
The order of battle has also been revampedto provide an accurate depiction of all the armies.Units are in the organizations within which theyactually fought, not the administrative formationsthat were quickly discarded due to the demandsof battle.
HURTGEN: HELLS FOREST
Hurtgenis a grand-tactical simulation ofthe Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. The more than2,200 counters in the game represent everyAmerican, German and British formation, atcompany and battalion levels, which fought along
the infamous Westwall near the forest andthe city of Aachen. Infantry, armor, anti-tank,reconnaissance, engineer, assault gun, howitzer, ranger, rocket, and headquarters units are allfully represented in the counter-mix. The fourmap sections are an accurate representation ofthe Rhineland region, portraying all creeks, rivers, bridges, vantage points, villages, towns, primaryand secondary roads, trails and other types ofterrain in relation to their suitability for armorand infantry. Also portrayed is the extensiveWestwall fortification line that courses alongthe entire width of the maps, plus the entire cityof Aachen and, of course the infamous HurtgenForest.
Players may use single map sections forsmaller scenarios, and there is also a grandcampaign game that utilizes all the map sectionsand portrays over three months of the campaign(nearly 300 game turns). Hurtgenrecreates theAmerican First and Ninth Army offensives intothe formidable German defense tenaciously hold-ing the imposing Westwall, the city of Aachenand the virtually impenetrable Hurtgen Forest. The Allies must force a crossing of the Roer Riverin order to break out onto the plain leading to the
Rhine, but the Germans have the advantage ofnatural defensive terrain, and are also preparedto blow the Roer River dams. Extensive supply, weather and air power rules are also included.
Hurtgenuses the same system of Wacht
am Rhein, though its been further streamlinedto account for periods of inactivity during thecampaign. Nonetheless, all the best aspectsof the WaRmechanics remain, retaining thesystems realism and dynamism, such as combatmodes, overruns, combat proficiency bonuses, regimental integrity bonuses, exploitation, etc.The maps elaborate terrain characteristics alsoremain integral, particularly the various densitiesof woods throughout the Hurtgen Forest, givingplayers a true insight into the difficulty of thecombat there.
The orders of batt le have also been exten-sively researched in order to provide an accurate
and functional depiction of the armies of bothsides. All units of both sides are now deployedin the organizations within which they actuallyfought, not the administrative formations thatwere, in reality, quickly discarded due to therequirements of combat.
Hurtgen: Hells Forest is the definitivesimulation of the campaign in and around theHurtgen Forest. Of fering the most detailed andcomprehensive orders of battle, maps and rulesever devoted to this campaign, Hurtgenis asuperlative re-creation at every scale.

Decision Pledge Program
PLEDGE PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Decision Games Pledge Program is anonline advance order system in which gamersmay pledge their support for future gamesthereby directing our efforts to the gamescustomers have the most interest in seeingpublished. Pledges are a commitment to purchasea game when published and payment information
is required in order to make pledges, however
payment will not be collected until a game starts
collating in our warehouse.
As pledge support builds, well add moredetailed descriptions, sample artwork, and rulesdrafts to the web site. Pledge orders will receiveup to a 25% discount from the final retail price. We will provide estimated pricing based on thelatest information we have about the game com-ponents and print pricing however the final price
is subject to change (largely due to the variablecosts of paper and shipping).
When a project is ready to go to our printers,we send out an e-mail indicating a project isclose to completion. This is to confirm paymentmethods and credit numbers and expiration datesin case customers need to make last minuteadjustments. It is critical to the pledge programthat customers respond immediately to this no-tification (our final boarding call). Credit cardsare not charged and checks not deposited untila project is in our warehouse being collated andprepared for shipping.
The Decision Games Pledge Program has
published many games. For your convenience,we are listing the projects already in the worksfor the next year in the first section of the pledgelist. Beyond the next year, there is no specifictimeframe for publication as each game variessignificantly in size and complexity, and the avail-ability of outside part-time developers to work onsome titles means a longer time. We generallyexpect to publish two to four games each yearwith the priority given to the games with themost pledges. We may publish a game fromfurther down the rankings when we need a goodfit to optimize component gang printing.
The pledge games are divided into the sameeras we use for Strategy & Tacticsand World atWargames. Many of the proposed games havelonger descriptions or a complete web pagewith sample artwork. Games that earn sufficientsupport work their way up the rankings until theyare in the top 10 and begin the process of design, development, artwork and printing. Game pro-posals that are not making sufficient progress aredropped to make way for new game proposals.
To pledge your support, check your list, makechanges or updates to your list or customerinformation, use our new online system to selectthe game proposals you wish to pledge in theStore/Pledge tab of the Decision Games website.

In the Krieg!system, those battles are handled abstractlywhich leaves Dai Sensofree to focus on thestrategic decisions and historical alternatives. What if the 1937 China Incident hadnt become afull-scale war? What if Japan renewed its treatywith Britain? What if the 1939 border clasheswith Russia had led to war instead? What if thewar in Europe had unfolded differently? Nowyou can explore all of these questions and more.Commencing in the Spring of 1937 when Japanwas the first Great Power to emerge fit to fightfrom the Great Depression, the land of the rising
sun faces many crucial decisions for achievingHakko Ichiu (Japanese world domination). What would have happened if the Re-publicans had won the Spanish Civil War? Whatif Germany and Russia hadnt signed the Pact;

well as the analytical techniques developed inwargaming. The bookalso provides some interesting speculation onhow the Germans could have gained a victory in1943 had they concentrated against the WesternAllies instead of the East. The British can launchOperation Acrobat in early 1941 using the forceswhich intervened in Greece to instead invadeTripolitania. There would also be a what-if sce-nario based on Hitler giving North Africa a higherpriority for reinforcement and logistics, with acomparative Allied response, including early USintervention.

44.D-Day at Tarawa. Based on John Butter-fields CSR Award-winning D-Day at OmahaBeachsystem, this solitaire game presents thecritical days of fighting at platoon and company
scale. You command the invading Americanforces against the dug-in Japanese defenders, controlled by the game system. Tarawacoversthe landings on Betio Island in November 1943,and the operations of the US 2nd Marine and27th Infantry divisions to clear the Island -- thefirst heavily contested landing of the PacificWar. The battle for this tiny Island raged for fourdays and when it was finally over, less than 200of the 5,000 Japanese defenders remained alive. One map, two counter sheets, and 55 cards. Est.Retail $64 (Est. Pledge $48).
45. D-Day at Peleliu. Peleliufocuses on thelandings by the US 1st Marine Division in Sep-
tember 1944, and their bitter two-day st ruggleto capture the airfield on the southern end ofthe island. A longer campaign scenario allowsthe player to extend the action to the ruggedterrain of Bloody Nose Ridge. Opposed by thereinforced Japanese 14th Infantry Division, thebattle resulted in the highest US casualty rate ofany in the Pacific war.
Like D-Day at Omaha Beach, both newgames feature landing hazards, variable enemypositions, fields of fire encoded onto the map, USweapon types versus Japanese defensive prepa-rations, and a random-event-driven narrative.Plus new features unique to the Pacific Theater, such as: US naval and aerial bombardment, flamethrowers, offshore reefs and defensivepositions, Japanese tank at tacks, tunnel networkmovement and Banzai charges. One map, onecounter sheets, and 55 cards. Est. Retail $56(Est. Pledge $42).
MODERN46. Vietnam.Players would choose campaigncards that would generate reinforcements andpolitical events. The cards would replace thecomplex political rules often required to simulatethe Vietnam War. Players can choose different
levels of escalation that will generate differentlevels of forces, at a trade-off in political supportand military efficiency. The Communist playercould choose between low-level terrorism, mid-level guerrilla warfare, or a full scale Tet-styleoffensive. The Allied player could choose tointervene with just US special forces, or mobilizefor an all-or-nothing invasion of Communistsanctuaries in Laos and Cambodia. Units willbe brigades/regiments and divisions/V iet Congfronts, rated for their conventional and uncon-ventional capabilities. The map will cover all ofIndochina. A semi-abstract system will model air
operations. Two maps, three counter sheets, 220cards. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $100. (Est.Pledge $75).
47. Battle for South Vietnam: 1964-1975.Battle for South Vietnamis a two-playercard-driven strategy game covering the war inIndochina from the time of the first US directinvolvement until the fall of Saigon. The mapcovers the entirety of South V ietnam, as well as
border regions of neighboring countries. Combatcounters represent Allied and Communist forceson the regimental-divisional level, and a SupportPoint Track abstractly indicates the level of artil-lery and air support available. The goal as the Al-lied player is to prevent the fall of South Vietnamwithout losing excessive prestige and supportwithin the world community, while the goal ofthe Communist player is to end US involvementas soon as possible, so he may face and defeatSouth Vietnam alone. BSVN is fast-paced with agreat deal of tension, options and decision-mak-ing. One map, one sheet of large counters, 110cards. Stephen van Hoak. Est. retail: $60. ( Est.
Pledge $45).48. Insurgency. Covers the first two yearsin Iraq following the ground campaign, as theAmerican-led Coalition attempts to quell armedIraqi resistance. American, British and multi-na-tional military units are presented on a brigadelevel. Insurgency combines stratagems, a hex-agonal grid map, and a unique city grid system tohighlight the importance of urban centers in Iraqiguerilla uprising. The Coalition player can investresources into troop increases, infrastructurerebuilding or act to reach political solutions.Meanwhile, the Insurgent player seeks to allyguerilla factions, while waging a war of attrition
on Coalition forces. Each game play is unpredict-able, and explores numerous scenarios with theintroduction of randomly-drawn stratagems.George Carter.
49. Red Dragon/Green Cresent. An expansionof the issue game in S&T#250, it will include theoriginal game plus all updates, and an expansiongame (Southern Empires Rising) covering theIndian Ocean and Middle East. It will, in fact, betwo games, playable separately or together asa combined mini-monster game. There will benew scenarios, new variants and new units. Thetimeframe will be extended to include scenariostaking place in 2011, 2015 and 2020. There willbe scenarios for a general Middle East war, Iranand the Gulf States, a Fifth Indo-Pakistani war,and an India-China War. Provisions for otherpower intervention will be an important par t ofthe game. Two maps, two counter sheets. BruceCostello. Est. retail: $60. (Est. Pledge $45).
STRATEGY & TACTICS PRESSBOOKS50. Barbarossais an analysis of the decisionsthat shaped the first 18 months of the EasternFront. Major what-if possibilities are reviewedincluding an earlier start to the campaign, anearlier drive to capture Moscow, a Soviet firststrike, and alternative plans to 1942 campaign.John Burtt. Est. retail: $35 (Est. Pledge $28).
51. Joint Warfareis an analysis of the historyand practice of joint operation: the integrationof all military forces into a single instrument ofwarfare. The book will include several historicalcase studies, such as the Roman use of combinedland-naval forces; the Guadalcanal campaign inWorld War II; the US SEALORDS campaign inthe Mekong Delta; and current operations in theMiddle East conflict. The book will look at land, sea and air forces, as well as special operationsforces and other instruments of national power. One aspect will be the development of bottom-up joint operations, where local commandersdecide work out their own command relation-
ships, as opposed to top-down situations. Thebook will include numerous maps and orders ofbattle. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $35 (Est.Pledge $28).
52. High Ground: The Art of UsingTerrain in Battle. Each chapter focuses onone battle (not necessarily from any particularera) in which a single piece of terrain had animpact on a battle: e.g. high ground for observa-tion, high ground as psychology (the Pratzen atAusterlitz), a river as a curtain of maneuver, etc.In some cases the terrain surprises both sides, inothers one commander makes a conscious deci-sion to use it. Chris Perello. Est. retail: $35 (Est.
Pledge $28).
53. Bushido and Kamikaze: Strategy andTactics in the PTOwill reexamine many of thecommon assumptions about the PTO, using ana-lytical methods developed in Strategy & TacticsandWorld at War. Chapters will cover topicssuch as: Bushido; Japanese tactics are oftenconsidered to be motivated by a samurai spirit, but the reality was the Japanese military was amodern disciplined fighting force, organized tofight a particular type of war, not relive medievalglories. Carrier battles; these are usually seenas the major turning points, but the reality is that
there were far more surface bat tles, and surfaceships sunk more combatants than did carrierplanes. Japanese naval doctrine; this called forthe fighting of the decisive battles yet Japanesenaval deployments after the early months of thewar tended to be fragmented, thereby throwingaway their chance to gain the ascendancy in thePacific.
The sharp end; a comparison of Japaneseand Allied infantry divisions demonstrates thatthe Japanese had as much combat power as didthe Americans and British, but Japanese tacticalfailures were often a result of lacking supply in

island battles such as Guadalcanal, or losing aircover as at Imphal. The air war; the collapse ofJapanese airpower is usually blamed on declin-ing pilot quality, but other factors such as poorground support, abysmal intelligence, and a lackof air-sea rescue service, also had their hand.
The CBI theater, Japans lost victory; theJapanese largely attained their objectives inthe China-Burma-India theater of operations yet
could not exploit that for ultimate victorythiswill explore some what-ifs. Kamikazes; the his-torical record shows that the various Japanesesuicide forces were not a revival of samurai tradi-tion but rather a desperation measure, one whichwas opposed by many in the Japanese highcommand. The book will include numerous maps, order of battle diagrams and charts, as well asscenario guides for wargamers. Joseph Miranda.Est. retail: $35 (Est. Pledge $28).
54. Rommel: Decision in the Western Desertwill be a new look at the Mediterranean Theaterof Operations in World War II, concentratingon the critical period of 1941-42 when Rommel
established the legend of the Afrikakorps in theWestern Desert. It will emphasize many of theunknown and overlooked factors of the war in thedesert. Some critical points: Rommel exceededhis orders in his 1941 and 1942 offensives, possi-bly dragging the Axis into campaigns which werenot strategically viable yet which had the poten-tial to be war winning events. Malta; the Axisfailure to take the island occurred notin 1942 asRommel was preparing to drive on Alexandria, but in 1941 at the start of the desert campaign. The logistics myth; the Axis dilemma was notin getting supplies to North Africatheir realfailure was in other areas related to logistics.
The air war; German and Italian air support oftenmade the difference between victory and defeaton the ground, but seldom appears in the order ofbattle. Combined operations and the lack thereof;both sides ground, air and naval commandersfought separate campaigns thereby throwingaway the chance for an early victory. Leadership, command control and organization: the Germansstarted with a decisive edge in these areasand the ultimate British victory was not in themateriel buildup but rather in them catching up inthe non-material factors. Odds and ends; variousspecial operations forces and unique forces suchas the Tobruk Raiders, Ramcke and his paratroop-
ers, and the curious career of Sonderverband288. The book will include numerous maps, orderof battle diagrams, and charts. Joseph Miranda.Est. retail: $35 (Est. Pledge $28).

While the character of Victoriais fictional, she is based on various Victorian era
personalities such as explorer Honoria Lawrence,Crimean War correspondent Fanny Duberly, andthe diva Lola Montez. There are also numeroushistorical characters, such as Lord Cardigan laterof the Light Brigade, explorer Sir Richard FrancisBurton, Afghan rebel chief Akbar Khan, and theinfamous Gen. Elphinstone who led an entire Brit-ish army to disaster in the Khyber pass. The bookincludes up front actions in such military affairs
as the Retreat from Kabul, as well as plenty ofmayhem, satire and outlandish affairs. The bookmakes a fine companion to the various wargamesDG has done on the wars in Afghanistan andVictorian era. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $35(Est. Pledge $28).
