FROM THE ARTISTIC/MANAGING DIRECTOR…

Welcome to the first show of our 30th anniversary season. It just doesn’t seem possible, but as one of the founding members I remember those early days of ACT 2, Inc. with Sr. Pam Donelan directing our first production of “Annie Get Your Gun” in 1980. I had been directed by her a few years earlier at Roncalli High School and knew Aberdeen Community Theatre was off to an auspicious beginning.

In 1981, ACT entered the biennial community theater festival, sponsored by the national theater association now known as the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT). I directed a production of “You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running” for the state festival in Sioux Falls. ACT won and went on to represent South Dakota at the Region V festival in Topeka, KS. Wow, what a thrilling time for a fledgling director and new organization. Since then, ACT has won more awards through biennial AACT Festivals than any other community theater in South Dakota, garnering dozens of awards at the state, regional and national levels. In the last two festival cycles, ACT has advanced shows to the national festival: “Honk!” (2007) and “How to Talk Minnesotan: The Musical” (2009). ACT received international recognition when “Honk!” represented the United States in Toyama, Japan in 2008. Through the AACT Festivals, Aberdeen Community Theatre and its volunteers have won awards for individual acting, ensemble acting, backstage crew, choreography, costuming, directing, props, scenic design and sound design. Most of the talent in ACT shows are never in a festival production where honors and awards are bestowed. But it is their talent and commitment which makes me most proud to have been a part of Aberdeen and its community theater for more than three decades.

As with any community, talent comes and goes, but in the Aberdeen area talent continually grows.

We began working on “Joseph” with Roncalli. Not as many Roncalli students are involved as we anticipated, but all the young people from throughout our community and beyond (we have a cast member who has been commuting daily from Watertown to be involved) have been a pleasure to work with during “Joseph.” As a Roncalli graduate, I’m pleased Roncalli students are involved and hope more will choose to be in the future.

I know none of what ACT has accomplished would have been possible without the commitment and support of our volunteers and patrons. Thank you for your support over the years. I know your continued support will be increasingly important each year to come.

Jim Walker

FROM THE DIRECTOR…It occured to me during rehearsals for “Joseph” that this production exemplifies what is so important about Aberdeen Community Theatre. As I watch the cast of all ages go through their paces getting this show ready for our audiences, I am reminded what a vibrant community theater has to offer. That is the opportunity for people of any experience level, from senior citizens to children, to come together and experience the joy that making art can bring. To see a group that

cuts across all demographics; to see those for whom school is a distant memory with those who are just beginning that experience blend together to bring “Joseph” to life is why I like spending my summers at ACT (and this is the 10th summer, so you know I mean it). Thank you for coming to the show and I challenge you to take the leap - come and audition and experience the pleasure that working on an ACT production can bring!
