YR 11 ENGLISH 2011 – Unit 1

Outcome 1 - Reading & Responding (Text Response – Analysis and Essay Writing)

TEXT: ‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel - Term 1

ASSESSMENT: A text response essay SAC on the text (100

mins and 600-800 words). An oral presentation SAC (3-5 minutes) on an

aspect of the Holocaust. Other set class work (i.e. chapter questions or

practice tasks) for an ‘S’ – meaning, satisfactory completion of the Outcome.

YR 11 ENGLISH 2011 – Unit 1 Outcome 3 – Using Language to Persuade

(Issues – Language Analysis and Point of View Piece)

Exploration of an issue that is currently in the media – Terms 1 + 2.

ASSESSMENT: A written analysis of a persuasive article from a

newspaper on the issue explored in class (50 minutes).

An oral presentation that conveys a point-of-view on the issue (3-5 minutes).

Other set class work (i.e. practice tasks) for an ‘S’.

(Context Writing Folio) CONTEXT: “Human Nature and the Mind” TEXT: Edgar Allan Poe’s Short Stories (and

a selection of other sources) – Term 2.ASSESSMENT:

A context SAC that shows imagination and understanding of context and text, as well as a “Statement of Intention” to explain authorial choices (150 minutes – 700-900 words ).

Other set class work (i.e. practice tasks) for an ‘S’.

Other set class work (i.e. practice tasks) for an ‘S’.

YR 11 ENGLISH 2011 – Unit 2 End of Semester EXAMS:

There will be two exams throughout the year at the end of each semester. They will comprise:

A Text response Essay A Context Piece Language Analysis

You will be given 10 minutes reading time and 2 hours of writing time for each exam.

YR 11 ENGLISH 2011 – Unit 2 Holiday Homework (yes, you’re now in

VCE):

Read ‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel. Complete chapter summaries of each

chapter on the handout provided. Complete definitions for the glossary words

on the handout (in your own words).

Your holiday homework needs to be submitted, fully completed, on the first day of Term 1 next year.
