2010 Outlook: 'We'll Be Better For It' Throwanyexcuseoutthere:graduation,injuries,coachingchange,anewsystem,late,badgoals. Therewasallofthat,butitdidn’tmatter.Attheendoftheday,theUMassLowellmen’ssoccerteamlimpedtoanuncharacter-istic4-12-0record. HeadCoachBryanScales,alongwiththe14returningmembersoftheteam,intendtoprovethe2009seasonwasafluke. “Itwasatransi-tionyear.Outofthe14playerswhoplayedintheNCAAtournamentquarter-final(in2008),onlysevenreturned,”saidScales,enteringhissecondseason.“CouplethatwithanewcoachjoiningtheprograminlateApril,anditwasalwaysgoingtobeadifficultchallenge. “Ithinkwehavemoredepthnow,”Scalesadded.“Ithinkwearemoreathletic.We’recertainlyyoung,butwealsohavesomestrong,experiencedleaders.” UMassLowellopenstheseasonThursdayatDowlingCollege(3:00)andnextTuesdayatDominican(3:30),bothtraditionalregionalheavyweights.TheRiverHawksopenathomeSaturday,Sept.11againsttheUniversityofBridgeport(1:00)andstartNortheast-10ConferenceplaySept.14athomeagainstpreseasonNo.2FranklinPierce(7:00). NodoubttheRiverHawkswillmissgoalkeeperRyanRichards,certainlyoneofthebestinprogramhistory,aswellasdefendersRudyKocandrle,MikeGalvinandCoreySamuelson. ThegraduationofJhonyValencialeavesasignificantholeinthemidfieldwhilethespeedofforwardJefferyDanso,whoregisteredfivegoalsandthreeassistslastyear,willalsobemissed. However,theRiverHawksreturnwithplentyoffirepowerupfront,creativityinthe

midfieldandaformidablebackline. SeniorStephenPotc-ner,whohassteadilyclimbedUMassLowell’sall-timescoringlist,wastheleadingscorerwithsixgoalsandoneassistlastyeardespitemissingthefinalthreematchesduetoaninjury. Potcner,tiedforninthall-timewith19goalsandeightassists(46points),willbeexpectedtoagainbeaprimaryscorerandwilllikelybepairedupfrontwithanewcomer.Thereareplentytochoose

frominjuniorMoham-medSaeedandfreshmenGideonGyasi,Adilson

LimaandEhsanTabrizi. SaeedcouldhaveanimmediateimpactfollowingtwoseasonsatBunkerHillCom-munityCollege,wherehewasatwo-timeNJCAAFirstTeamAll-AmericanandAll-Regionstandout. LimacomestoLowellfollowingafour-yearcareeratLeominsterH.S.wherehewasatwo-timeMid-WachusettLeagueall-starandall-statestandoutasaseniorwhileTabriziwasanAll-MerrimackValleyConferenceplayeratTewksburyH.S. “Stephenreturnstoleadtheforwardline,”Scalessaid.“AlongwithMohammedandGideonandEhsan,therewillbesomegoodcompetitionforspots.” BehindjuniorMatheusCandidoandseniorGuillermoCisneros,theRiverHawkshaveplentyofexperienceinthemid-field.Underscoringtheplagueofinjurieslastyear,CandidowasoneofonlythreeRiverHawkstoplayinall16matcheslastyear,overwhichhesetuptwogoals. Cisneros,whoredshirtedthe2008sea-sonduetoaninjury,isinhisfifthyearwiththeprogram. ExpectedtoresumefromlastyearissophomoreRyanMcLeod,whopeakedattheendoftheseasonontheleftside.

JuniorBrunoAlmeida,whoappearedinfourmatches,andsophomoreNateOlivei-ra,limitedtooneappear-ance,areexpectedtoseemoreminutes. NewtotheteamarefreshmanKyleGarvan,ChrisReuterandEricDe-Santis,whoeachenjoyedplentyofplauditsinhighschool. Afour-yearplayeratBraintreeH.S.,GarvanwasaBayStateLeagueall-starandalsoamemberoftheFCBlazersclubteamwhichcapturedthe2009statecupchampi-onship.Reuterwasanall-stateplayeratFraming-hamH.S.aswellasastandoutintheFCStarsclubsystemwhileDeSantiswasathree-yearstarteratWoburnH.S.,whereheearnedMiddlesexLeagueall-starhonorstwice. “Ourmidfieldiscompetitive,andeveryoneofthemisgoodontheball,”Scalesnoted.“Matheus,GandBrunohavealldonewellinthepreseason.WithFrancisgettingbackuptospeedafteraninjury,therewillbesomecompetitiontherealso.” Defensively,UMassLowell’sbacklinehasthepotentialtobespecial.JuniorAsleyBarrios,limitedto12matchesayearagobecauseofaninjury,andsophomoreChar-lieOberreturnasdoessophomoreMichaelNtori,who,at6-foot-3,bringsaformidablepresence. SophomoreEvanSpannreturnstothebackfollowingatwo-yearabsenceandcouldplayrightaway.Spannstartedall19match-esandemergedasoneofthetopfreshmen

defendersintheNE-10whenhehelpedleadthe2007teamtotheNCAATournamentsecondround. ScalescanalsotabsophomoreJamesCostello,whostartedfiveofhisfirstsevenmatchesbeforesuc-cumbingtoinjury. RedshirtsophomoreNeilLavanchyleadsthreenewcomersinthedefenseandisexpectedtoplayrightaway.Priortosittingoutthe2009season,Lavanchywasa

two-timeAll-NewEnglandstandoutatCushingAcad-emy.

FreshmanRossMarchandandsophomoreBeauTheriaultaretal-entedplayerswhowillbattleforminutes.Marchandwasafour-yearstarterandthree-timeCapeAnnLeagueall-starattraditionalpowerNorthAndoverH.S. TheriaultenjoyedastandoutcareeratSalemH.S. Ingoal,thegraduationofRichardsleavesasignificantvoid.UMassLowellwillrelyonapairoffreshmeninChrisMaierleandConnorAskins,bothofwhomhaveimpressedinthepreseason. Maierlewasatwo-timeall-con-ferencestandoutatFriendsAcademywhichhebackstoppedtoLongIslandandNassauCountychampionships.Healsoenjoyedaplaudit-filledcareerintheHicksvilleStrikersclubsystem. Askinswasafour-yearstarterandall-state/conferencestandoutatCatholicMemorialH.S.whichheledtothestatetitleasasenior. “Defenseisourbiggestconcern,butwehaveabunchofplayerswhocanplayintheback,”Scalesnoted.“It’sjustaquestionoftimebeforehowquicklywecangetsettled.”

AnativeofMedway,MA,BryanScalesentershissecondyearasheadcoachoftheUMassLowellmen'ssoccerprogramfollowing11yearsastheheadcoachatCornellUniversity(1998-2008). Scales'stayatCornellwasprecededbyfouryearsasanassistantwiththeBigRed(1994-98);twoyearsasanassis-tantatHarvard(1992-94)andoneseasonasanassistantatPlattsburghState(1991-92)afterastellarcareeratHartwickCollege.

ScalesisalsoascoutfortheU.S.Men'sNationalTeamintheU.S.Developmen-talAcademyandservesasanassistantcoachwiththeU-15boysnationalteam.IntheMayof2009,ScaleshelpedleadtheU-15boystoa10-daytourofMoenchengla-dbach,Germany. Additionally,ScalesservesastheheadcoachoftheNewEnglandRevolutionU-16squad,whichhe,alongsideassistantcoachKarlSpratt,ledtothe2010U.S.SoccerDevelopmentAcademy(USSDA)NortheastRegionChampionshipandanap-pearanceintheUSSDAnationaltournamentinonlyitsthirdyear. Forhisefforts,Scaleswasnamedthe2010U.S.SoccerEasternConferenceCoachoftheYear. ScalesenjoyedaplethoraofhonorsduringhisyearsatCornell.In2001,HewasnamedtheNationalSoccerCoachesAssociationofAmerica(NSCAA)NewYorkRegionDivisionICoachoftheYearandwasafinalistfornationalcoachoftheyearhonorsafterleadingtheBigRedtoa9-4-3season.Thatyear,heledCornelltotheNo.22rankingintheNSCAADivisionIpoll. ScaleswasalsoinstrumentalinguidingfiveplayerstoAll-IvyLeagueFirstTeamstatusaswellasNSCAAAll-NewYorkRegionhonors.Additionally,sixplayersfromhistenureenjoyedprofessionalcareersinMajorLeagueSoccer,USLFirstDivisionandNorwegianFirstDivision.AmongthemisScottPalguta,currentlyacenterbackfortheColoradoRapids. Scales'playersexcelledacademicallyaswell,as10werenamedtoCornell's400Club,whichhonorsathleteswith4.0gradepointaveragesorhigher.His2007squadvaunteda3.3gradepointaverageandreceivedtheNSCAATeamAcademicAward. AfterassistantcoachingstintsatPlattsburghandHarvard,Scalesbecameanassistanttothen-coachDaveSarachan,nowtheassociateheadcoachoftheL.A.Galaxy,in1994andhelpedCornellfroma2-10-3recordin1994toa15-2-1clip,theIvyLeagueChampionshipandanNCAATournamentbidin1995. ScaleswastabbedtheheadcoachatCornellafterSarachanjoinedMLSCham-pionD.C.Unitedafterthe1997season. A1991graduateofHartwick,Scaleswasatwo-yearstarterinthemidfieldanddefenseandhelpedtheHawkstothe1987and1989NCAAtournaments.HartwickroutinelyrankedontopoftheNewYorkRegionandspentmuchoftheseasonrankedinthetop10nationally. Afour-yearletterwinner,Scalesreceivedhisbachelor'sdegreeinpoliticalsci-ence. Duringsummersthroughoutcollege,ScaleswasaregularintherenownLASALeagueaswellastheCapeCodAmateurSoccerLeague.Previously,hewasastandoutatNewtonNorthH.S.,fromwherehegraduatedin1986. Scalesandhiswife,Mindy,havethreechildren:Aiden(10),Ciara(8)andJack(6)andliveinNashua,N.H.

ChristianFigueroaentershisfourthseasonontheUMassLowellstafffollow-inganhonor-filledcareerfrom2003-06.

Oneoftheprogramsbest-evermidfielders,hehelpedtheRiverHawkstoa47-17-14record(.603),twoNCAATournaments–includingthequarterfinalroundin2003–andtwoNortheast-10ConferenceTournamentchampionships.Alongtheway,Figueroawasthe2003NE-10FreshmanoftheYearandwentontoearnall-conferencehonorsandNSCAAAll-NortheastRegionstatusthreetimes,culminatingwithfirstteamhonorsin2005and2006. Atwo-yearcaptain,Figueroawasoneof25DivisionI,IIandIIIplayersin-vitedtotryoutfortheNewEnglandRevo-lutioninFebruaryof2007.Hecurrentlyranks17thonUML'sall-timescoringlistwith12goalsand14assists(38points). OutsideofUMassLowell'sseason,Figueroaisanactivecoachintheclubcircuit.AlongsideformerUMassLowellassistantMarcConnolly,FigueroahelpedleadtheFCStarsU-18boysteamtotheMassachusettsStateCupU-17champi-onshipin2009and2010,whichincludedatriptotheRegion1(Northeast)champi-onshipgame. AgraduateofNorthAndoverH.S.,FigueroawasaCapeAnnLeagueall-staraswellasanMIAAAll-StateandAll-EasternMassstandout.Athree-yearstarter,heledtheScarletKnightstotheCapeAnnLeaguechampionshipin2000and2002andtheMIAADivisionIINorthfinalin2001. AnativeofNorthAndover,MA,FigueroalivesinLowell,MA.

AproductoftheManchesterUnitedYouthAcademy,KarlSprattentershisfirstyearonthecoachingstaffandwilloverseeUMassLowell’sgoalkeepers. SprattisalsoinhisinhisfirstyearasthegoalkeeperscoachoftheNewEnglandRevolutionYouthDevelopmentProgram,whereheworksalongsideUMassLowellHeadCoachBryanScales.ThetworecentlyhelpedtheRevs’U-16Teamtoits2010U.S.SoccerDevelopmentAcademyNortheastDivisiontitleandanappear-anceattheUSSDAnationaltournamentinonlyitsthirdyear. SprattisthethirdcoachwithintheRevolu-tionsystemtojoinUMassLowell.Formerstand-outAdinBrownservedasanassistantin2004whileT.J.Tomassowasonstafffrom2005-06. SprattcurrentlyholdshisFootballAssocia-tion(FA)Level1and2coachingandGoalkeep-inglicensesaswellastheNSCAANationalGoal-keepingDiploma;Heisalsoacertifiedinstructoroffitnessmanagement,strength,conditioning,speedandresistance. PriortocomingtoUMassLowell,SprattwasanassistantgoalkeepingcoachinboththeSunderlandFCandDarlingtonFCyouthsystems.HealsoservedasgoalkeeperscoachattheUniversityofSunderlandandUniversityofNorthumbria.
