TAYLOR TRACKin the Irwin Belk Athletic Complex

The Irwin Belk Athletic Complex (2002) is comprised of Grace P. Johnson Stadium (2007), Taylor Track (2002), Lumbee Guaranty Bank Field (2002) and the Caton Fieldhouse (2007).

The complex is named after Irwin Belk, former president and CEO of Belk Stores. The stadium is named after Grace P. Johnson. Taylor Track is named after Dick and Lenore Taylor, local businessman, while Caton Fieldhouse is named after Bob Caton, also a local businessman.

The Belk Athletic Complex is the home of Braves football and men’s and women’s track and field.

Irwin Belk was born April 4, 1922, in Charlotte, N.C., the son of William Henry and Mary Le-onora Irwin Belk. He has worked in his family’s business, Belk, Inc., his entire life. Today, Belk, Inc., is the nation’s largest privately-owned department store company with more than 275 stores in 16 states in the southeast, south-west, and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Mr. Belk retired from Belk, Inc. in 1996 and is now President of the Belk Group, Inc.

Mr. Belk served his country during World War II in the 491st Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force. He was elected to the North

Carolina House of Representatives in 1959 and the North Carolina State Senate in 1963. He was appointed by President Clinton as the United States public delegate to the 54th United Nations General Assembly in 1999.

As senator, he introduced the legislation that made UNC Charlotte the fourth university in the UNC system. He served on the UNC Board of Governors for twenty-eight years, during that time The University of North Carolina at Pembroke joined the UNC system.

Mr. Belk has a distinguished career of ser-vice to local, state, national and interna-tional organizations. He was President of the American Cancer Society Foundation for forty years and received that organiza-tion’s highest award, the Merit Award in 2002.

Mr. Belk graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1946. He has a lifelong interest in track and field, stemming from running for UNC-Cha-pel Hill during his undergraduate days.Mr. Belk has been a member of the U.S. Olym-pic Committee for forty-five years and received the organization’s highest volunteer award, the Olympic Order, at the 2002 Winter Games in

Salt Lake City, Utah. He has attended every Olympic Games since 1960. The U.S. Olym-pic Training Center in Colorado Springs has on its grounds the Carol Grotnes Belk Sculp-ture Garden, named to honor his wife of fifty-eight years, and the Irwin Belk Olympic Path.

Mr. Belk has become perhaps the biggest in-dividual philanthropist in the sport, build-ing more than thirty-five tracks throughout the country and serving as a Board member for the USA Track and Field Foundation.

The Belk name permeates educational institu-tions throughout the country, and has a major presence at UNC Pembroke. UNCP’s Mary Ir-win Belk Residence Hall, which was dedicated in 1970 and is named for Mr. Belk’s mother, marked the family’s first gift to the Pembroke campus. A contribution from Mr. Belk en-dowed the first distinguished professor position in the UNCP School of Business. In 2002, the Irwin Belk Athletic Complex at UNC Pem-broke was named in his honor. UNCP, along with most institutions of higher learning in North Carolina and beyond, is grateful for the support, philanthropy, and vision of Irwin Belk.

UNC Pembroke is committed to abso-lute compliance with all NCAA and Peach Belt Conference rules and regulations. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental principle of NCAA legislation. It requires each institution to conduct its intercollegiate athletics programs in accordance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. This responsibility includes ensuring that coaches, staff, and other groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all ap-plicable rules. As a result, it is important for prospects, fans, and alumni to have some understanding of the principles governing college athletics. Below are a few definitions and rules that apply to all athletic boosters.

NCAA DEFINITIONS REPRESENTATIVE OF ATHLETICS INTERESTS (BOOSTER)

A “representative of athletics interests” (booster) is any individual or group that has ever: •Been a member of an organization promot-ing UNC Pembroke athletics. •Contributed to the Athletics Department or its booster organizations. •Assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospec-tive student-athletes. •Provided benefits (e.g. employment) to pro-spective student-athletes, enrolled student-athletes or their family members. •Otherwise promoted the UNC Pembroke athletics program. Keep in mind that it is very easy to meet one or more of these criteria and once you become an athletics representative, you retain this status FOREVER!

PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE A “prospect” is a high school student that has

started classes for the ninth grade and also any ju-nior college student. A student that has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the student receives any benefits that the institu-tion does not provide to all prospective students in general. An individual remains a prospect until he or she starts classes at UNCP or reports for prac-tice, whichever occurs first.

STUDENT-ATHLETE A “student-athlete” is a student whose enroll-

ment was solicited by an athletics staff member with the expectation that the student would par-ticipate in intercollegiate athletics.A student not solicited by an athletics staff member becomes a student-athlete when he or she joins an intercol-legiate team or reports for practice.

RECRUITING “Recruiting” is any solicitation of a prospect

or the prospect’s family by an authorized institu-tional staff member for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment at UNCP and participa-tion in athletics. Athletics representatives may not be involved in the recruitment of prospects except as outlined in the following section.

CONTACT A “contact” is any face-to-face encounter be-

tween a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or ath-letics representative during which any dialogue occurs.

GUIDELINES AND REMINDERS FOR BOOSTERS •A booster may not contact a prospect, pros-pect’s family, friends, coach or school administra-tor in an attempt to evaluate or recruit the pros-pect. •A booster may not expend funds to enter-tain or provide transportation for a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends. •A booster may not write, make phone calls, or otherwise communicate with a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends for recruiting purpos-es. •A booster may not contribute funds to a prospect’s high school or club team as a form of-recruiting inducement or if solicited to do so by a collegiate coach. •A booster may attend a prospect’s athletic events without contacting the prospect or his/her family. •A booster may send recommendation letters and newspaper clippings about a prospect in their area to UNCP’s coaches. •A booster may continue a pre-existing re-lationship with a prospect and his/her family as long as the relationship pre-dated the prospect’s recruitment or notoriety as an athlete and the na-ture of the relationship is not enhanced after his/her notoriety as an athlete. Such a relationship may not be for recruiting purposes. •A booster may host a current student-athlete or an entire team in their home for a meal, but only on an occasional basis. •A booster may provide a job for a student-athlete, but the job responsibilities must be legiti-mate and the pay commensurate for the task.

GUIDELINES FOR EXTRA BENEFITS An “extra benefit” is any special arrange-ment by an institutional employee or athletics rep-resentative to provide a prospect, a student-athlete or his or her family with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Boosters may not pro-vide any special arrangement considered to be an extra benefit. Examples of extra benefits include, but are not limited to: •Gifts of money, awards or other tangible items. •Use of vehicles or payment of transportation costs incurred by prospect, prospect’s relatives or friends. •Free or reduced housing arrangements. •Promise of employment after graduation or employment of prospect’s relatives or friends. •Special discounts or payment arrangements.

RECRUITING GUIDELINES FOR PROSPECTS LETTERS & NOTES Coaches may begin to write notes and let-ters to prospects beginning September 1 of their junior year in high school (September 15 after sophomore year for men’s basketball prospects).

PHONE CALLS •Prospect Calling: A coach may receive a call initiated by a prospect and paid for by the prospect at any time, including the prospect’s freshman or sophomore years. Prospects may call coaches col-lect at any time. •Football: Coaches may call a prospect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding his senior year. •Men’s Basketball: Coaches may call a pros-pect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding his senior year. •Women’s Basketball: Coaches may call a prospect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding her senior year. •Other Sports: Coaches may call a prospect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding his or her senior year.

UNOFFICIAL VISITS There are no limits on the number of unoffi-cial (unpaid) visits to UNCP a prospect may make and no age restriction on who may make unoffi-cial visits. At each unofficial visit, a prospect may receive three (3) complimentary admissions to a home athletic event. No other expenses may be paid by UNCP. At certain times of the year, un-official visits are prohibited so please coordinate your visit with the coaching staff.

OFFICIAL VISITS A prospect may only make a total of five official (paid) visits and only one official visit to UNCP. A prospect may not make an official visit until the first day of classes of their senior year (January 1 of junior year for men’s basketball prospects). All official visits will be coordinated by the coaching staffs.

It was the flying wedge, football’s ma-jor offense in 1905, that spurred the forma-tion of the NCAA. The game’s rugged nature, typified by mass formations and gang tackling, re-sulted in numerous injuries and deaths and prompted many institutions to discontinue the sport. Others urged that football be re-formed or abolished from intercollegiate athletics. President Theodore Roosevelt sum-moned college athletics leaders to two White House conferences to encourage such reforms. In early December 1905, Chancellor Henry M. MacCracken of New York University convened a meeting of 13 institutions to initiate changes in football-playing rules. At a subsequent meeting De-cember 28 in New York City, the Intercol-legiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) was founded by 62 mem-bers. The IAAUS officially was constituted March 31, 1906, and took its present name, the NCAA, in 1910. For several years, the NCAA was a discussion group and rules-making body; but in 1921, the first NCAA national championship was held: the Na-tional Collegiate Track and Field Cham-pionships. Gradually, more rules commit-tees were formed and more championships were held. A series of crises brought the NCAA to a crossroads after World War II. The “San-ity Code” - adopted to establish guidelines for recruiting and financial aid - failed to curb abuses involving student-athletes. Postseason football games were multiplying rapidly. Member institutions were increas-ingly concerned about the effects of unre-stricted television on football attendance. The complexity and scope of these problems and the growth in membership and championships demonstrated the in-creasing need for full-time professional leadership. In 1951, Walter Byers, who pre-viously had served as a part-time executive assistant, was named executive director. A national headquarters was established in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1952. A program to control live television of football games was approved, the annual Convention del-egated enforcement powers to the Associa-tion’s Council and legislation was adopted governing postseason bowl games.

The Association’s membership was di-vided into three legislative and competitive divisions - I, II and III - in 1973. Five years later, Division I members voted to create subdivisions I-A and I-AA (subsequently renamed the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Football Championship Subdivision) in football. The NCAA began administering wom-en’s athletics programs in 1980 when Divi-sions II and III established 10 champion-ships for 1981-82. A year later, the historic 75th Convention adopted an extensive gov-ernance plan to include women’s athletics programs, services and representation. The delegates expanded the women’s champi-onships program with the addition of 19 events. On August 1, 1997, the NCAA imple-mented a change in its governance structure that provides greater autonomy for each membership division and more control by the presidents of member colleges and uni-versities. Walter Byers retired October 1, 1987, after 36 years as the Association’s execu-tive director. He was replaced by University of Virginia Athletics Director Richard D. Schultz, who resigned in 1993. Schultz was replaced by University of Arizona Athletics Director Cedric Dempsey, who led the As-sociation beginning in 1994 and served as president until December 2002. Dempsey was replaced by Indiana President Myles Brand, the first university president to serve as the Association’s chief executive. Brand led the Association beginning in 2003 until his death from pancreatic can-cer in September 2009. Today, the national office staff of more than 380 employees is led by Interim President Jim Isch. Isch was named interim president in September 2009 after serving as the Association’s senior vice president for administration and chief finan-cial officer

CORE IDEOLOGY

The NCAA’s core ideology consists of two notions: core purpose - the organiza-tion’s reason for being - and core values - es-sential and enduring principles that guide an organization.

CORE PURPOSE

Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate ath-letics into higher education so that the edu-cational experience of the student-athlete is paramount.

CORE VALUES

The Association - through its member institutions, conferences and national office staff - shares a belief in and commitment to: • The collegiate model of athletics in which students participate as an avocation, balancing their academic, social and athlet-ics experiences.

• The highest levels of integrity and sportsmanship.

• The pursuit of excellence in both aca-demics and athletics. • The supporting role that intercolle-giate athletics plays in the higher education mission and in enhancing the sense of com-munity and strengthening the identity of member institutions.

• An inclusive culture that fosters equi-table participation for student-athletes and career opportunities for coaches and admin-istrators from diverse backgrounds.

• Respect for institutional autonomy and philosophical differences.

• Presidential leadership of intercolle-giate athletics at the campus, conference and national levels.

UNCP HEAD COACHLARRY ROGERS

Entering into his 29th season as the head coach of the track & field programs, Larry Rodgers has suc-cessfully guided both the men’s and women’s squads through the better part of 30 years at UNC Pembroke.

UNCP’s former head cross country coach, Rodgers took over the reigns, in the fall semester of 1981, from former coaching legend Dr. Ed Crain. Dur-ing UNCP’s tenure as an NAIA and NCAA dual member, Rodgers led his cross country squads to eight NAIA district titles and four Carolinas Con-ference titles, sweeping both the men’s and women’s titles in 1991. His teams have advanced to the nationals four times and has coached 38 all-district and 11 all-conference performers in cross country, plus one all-American.

Furthermore, as a cross country coach in the Peach Belt Confer-ence (joined in 1992), Rodgers has coached three runner-up teams and 28 of his athletes have earned all-conference honors while being named coach of the year 13 times through-out his cross country coaching career. A former track and field all-Ameri-can at UNCP, Rodgers ran the third leg of the mile relay which finished fourth at the 1973 NAIA nation-als. He still holds the school record

for the indoor 600 yard dash, with a time of 1:14.9 which he set in 1970.Rodgers has coached 15 all-Americans in track and field and his teams have placed third, 12th, and 19th at the NAIA nationals. His teams have also earned three NAIA District 26 titles, six Carolinas Conference titles, and 11 Carolinas Invitational Champion-ship titles, all which culminate into 44 NAIA all-district performers and 72 all-Carolinas Conference performers.

Rodgers was named track & field coach of the year on nine occasions during the NAIA and Carolinas Conference era and has also earned this distinction 20 times as the Carolinas Invitational Championship Coach of the Year. During the past four track & field seasons, the Braves earned runner-up honors in 2006 and 2007 at the Carolinas Invitational Champion-ship and brought home the victory in 2008 accumulating 224.50 points. The men’s 4x100m relay team - con-sisting of freshmen and sophmores - posted a season best time of 41.00s, good enough for an NCAA provi-sional qualifying mark. The women’s team has won the last three champion-ships, along with 11 individual MVP awards. They also finished fifth at the NCAA II South Region Champion-ship in 2008 and, in 2009 had 22 top-5 finishes including 10 first place fin-

ishes aided by seven individuals at the Southeast Regional Championships.

Rodgers is a certified United States Track & Field Level I coach in all event areas and a member of the United States Track/XC Coaches Association. In January 2007, he was inducted into the Jordan Mat-thews High School - where he gradu-ated in 1968 - Athletic Hall of Fame.

Rodgers received his BS degree in physical education from UNCP in 1973 and his Master’s degree in physi-cal education, with a concentration in Adaptive PE, from North Caro-lina Central University in 1979. Prior to his return to Pembroke in the Fall of 1981, Rodgers taught and coached at South View Junior High and Douglas Byrd Senior High in Cum-berland County, Fayetteville, N.C.

In addition to his coaching duties, Rodgers is a lecturer in the HPER de-partment at UNCP. He is married to the former Shirley Nicholson of Ham-let, N.C., also a graduate of UNCP (1993), and a recent retiree after 34.5 years of service as an administrative assistant. They have two daughters, Deidre McCallum and Tina Rod-gers, and three grandchildren-Larry McCallum, Jr. (LJ), Rachel McCal-lum, and Benjamin J. Rodgers (BJ).

ASSISTANT COACHGARY AYCOCK

Having already logged collegiate admin-istrative experience as the cross country and track & field head coach at nearby St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Gary Ay-cock assumes numerous roles at his alma mater as the head coach for the Braves’ cross country program and assistant coach for the UNCP track & field program.

Prior to assuming his posts in Pembroke, Ay-cock served as the skipper for the Knights, leading both the men’s and women’s teams to their most successful era in the program’s NCAA Division II history both on race paths and in the classroom. Aycock, a Scot-land county native, served as the Knights’ assistant coach in 2001-02. He has also served as the head track and field coach since the inception of the program in 2005.

The 2005 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Con-ference & 2006 Southeast Region coach of the year at SAPC, Aycock has guided the Knights’ cross country teams to countless individual and team milestones in his six seasons at the helm.

On the men’s side, Aycock led St. Andrews to it’s first-ever conference title in 2005 and first-ever Southeast Region crown in 2006. Un-der his guidance, the men’s teams won nine races and had nine other runner-up finishes. Aycock led the Knights to their first-ever No. 1 ranking in the Southeast and qualified the men’s team for the NCAA Division II na-tional championships in both 2005 and 2006.

ASSISTANT COACHJEFF MOODY

Aycock recruited the CVAC freshman of the year in three consecutive seasons (Chris Miller in 2004, Mitch Cooper in 2005 and Pedro Tapia Jr. in 2006). Ay-cock has coached 15 all-conference, nine all-region, and six runners of the week.

On the women’s side, Aycock has coached an impressive 16 conference runners of the week while also building the program into con-tenders in the region (earning the program’s first-ever ranking in the Southeast Region). Aycock-guided women’s teams have won two races and finished in the top-three places seven times. Aycock has directed seven all-confer-ence and three all-region women’s honorees.

Aycock has directed 15 individual aca-demic all-Americans and four academ-ic all-American teams including the 2004 women’s team being ranked fourth in the nation with a 3.71 team GPA.

An avid runner, Aycock has racing experience on the high school, collegiate and open levels and is a tri-athlete as well. He was a mem-ber of Scotland High School’s 1989 and 1990 state NCHSAA Track & Field championship teams and East Carolina University’s 1995 UPA college national championship Ultimate Frisbee team where he was a candidate for the Callahan Award, an honor presented to the UPA national collegiate player of the year.

Aycock earned a bachelor of science in physi-cal education from UNCP in 2003 and a master’s degree in physical education in De-cember, 2007. He completed the NIKE cross-country coaches’ clinic in 2002 and is a certi-fied United States Track & Field Level I coach in all event areas and a certified United States Track & Field Level II endurance coach.

Aycock resides in Laurinburg with his wife, Emily, and two children, Emma Grace and Aaron Douglas.

Jeff Moody begins his seventh year as a part-time assistant coach for the Braves cross country and track teams. His col-legiate experience as a member of PSU’s 1978 National Cross Country Team and tutaledge under former PSU legendary head coach, Dr. Ed Crain, gives Moody a wealth of knowledge and experience which he can share with UNCP runners.

Prior to his coaching at UNCP, Moody served as an assistant cross country/track coach for 12 years at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, N.C. He has also served in the capacity of head cross country coach at Union Pines High School and head cross country coach for Pinecrest High School as well as the head indoor track coach for both the men’s and women’s teams.

During his high school coaching ca-reer, Moody was named Southeastern 4A Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year, for men and women five times consecutively (1996-2000). His teams won several conference champion-ships and three regional championships.

Moody earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education from PSU in 1979. He has taught in the public school system of North Carolina for 30 years, 26 of those at his cur-rent school, Southern Pines Elementary. In 1996, he was honored as teacher of the year.

Moody resides in Taylor Town, N.C. (near Pinshurst) with his wife, Nadine. They have two daughters, Yarona and Jessica, and one son, Jeffery II, also a UNCP graduate (2005).
