OutlOOk

Entering his fourth season at Arizona State University, head coach Dennis Erickson has combined an accomplished, focused coaching staff with a roster complete with athletic,

intense players on offense, defense and special teams all with the dedication and drive to vault the Sun Devils to a high standing in the Pacific-10 Conference in 2010.

With the expectation to couple a remodeled, quick-striking offense with a defense already established as one of college football’s most potent and suffocating units, the outlook for the 2010 season at ASU is bright as the pieces are in place throughout the roster to advantageously utilize the talent that exists on both sides of the ball for the Sun Devils.

ASU’s roster showcases an excellent combination of youthful passion and experience, as several underclassmen have earned ample action the past two years, creating a widespread veteran attitude among not only the senior classmen but all throughout the depth charts.

On offense, running back Cameron Marshall, wide receivers Gerell Robinson and Kerry Taylor, and lineman Garth Gerhart return as key contributors from last season, while the highly-acclaimed ASU defense, led by tackles Saia Falahola and Lawrence Guy, end James Brooks, linebacker Vontaze Burfict and cornerback Omar Bolden has the personnel to remain among the nation’s premier units. Additionally, the Sun Devils boast highly capable special teams contributors, led by seniors Thomas Weber at kicker and Trevor Hankins at punter, as well as a crop of speedy, athletic returns specialist.

OFFENSE

The arrival of new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone to the coaching staff at ASU provided instant intrigue due to his tremendous track record as an expert offensive mind, specifically focusing on quarterback development and overall firepower in the passing game.

ASU’s offense in 2010 will feature a quick, fast-paced and versatile passing attack that uses a variety of explosive and dynamic receivers to help facilitate the offensive movement, with well-balanced doses of athletically rounded running backs.

In addition to the backs and receivers, consistency and accuracy are expected to be found at the quarterback position where two qualified competitors will battle during the offseason, while a deep, talented offensive line is poised to be the best that ASU has had since Coach Erickson’s arrival in 2007.

QUARTERBACK

As the Sun Devil offense adopts a game plan focused on high-tempo, quick-paced plays and formations to emphasize high-caliber athletes at all skill positions, the play at quarterback will be an integral key to orchestrating the offensive success.

With three quarterbacks on the roster with FBS level starting experience and the guidance of quarterback guru and position coach Mazzone, the Sun Devils’ passers are predicted to help provide consistency and rhythm to ASU’s offense.

This fall sophomore Brock Osweiler and junior Steven Threet entered practice in an even competition for the starting nod, and each of the two provides a strong-armed, savvy and enthusiastic presence to the position.

After arriving on campus in the spring of 2009 as an early high school graduate, Osweiler worked his way into live duty as a true freshman and ultimately took over starting duties late in the season before missing the final two games due to injury. Altogether, the Kalispell, Mont., native appeared in six games with one start and passed for 249 yards and two touchdowns. One of the nation’s tallest

quarterbacks with incredible athleticism for his size, Osweiler boasts the arm strength, courage and moxie needed to be a standout passer at the Pac-10 level and will compete during the entire preseason to be named ASU’s starting quarterback as a sophomore.

Threet arrived on campus last year after spring drills as a transfer from Michigan, where he started eight games for the Wolverines in 2008, completing 102-of-200 passes for 1,105 yards with nine touchdowns while also adding 201 rushing yards and two additional scores on the ground. A product of Adrian, Mich., Threet stands tall in the pocket and can deliver challenging throws at great distances and has the ability to use his feet to gain yards when necessary. While sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, Threet guided ASU’s scout team to become further acclimated to Pac-10 football and has shown the talent in practice to qualify him to excel as a potential starter for the Sun Devils as a junior this season.

Quick-footed and an accurate passer, Samson Szakacsy started the final two games of the season, ultimately leading the team with a 64.0 completion percentage (32-of-50 passing), adding 362 yards with four touchdowns and only one interception in five total appearances. The fastest quarterback on the roster, Szakacsy brings a dual-threat element that no other Sun Devil passer provides, and despite his position on the depth chart, he has the ability to impact a game whether he gains consistent repetitions or is utilized in unique formations form-fitted to his athletic strengths. Because of offseason surgery Szakacsy was limited however, the Camarillo, Calif., native will join Osweiler and Threet in competition for first-team membership once fully healed.

Taylor Kelly of Eagle (Idaho) High School, a versatile, multi-purpose quarterback and last year’s Gatorade State Player of the Year, will join the team in the fall and add depth at quarterback.

RUNNING BACK

As four scholarship running backs depart from the 2009 roster, the pendulum swings to a crop of young, talented and hungry backs that have a collectively versatile skill set and desire to improve and with the assistance of position coach Bryce Erickson, ASU’s tailbacks have the capability to be a standout focus of the revamped Sun Devil offensive attack.

Cameron Marshall arrived on campus with high expectations last fall and quickly acclimated to the college football environment, using his superb speed and strength to earn immediate playing time. The second-leading rusher in the Pac-10 among true freshmen in 2009, Marshall studied behind a stable of seniors as a rookie and enters his sophomore season at the top of the depth chart at running back. Last year, the San Jose, Calif., native rushed 64 times for 280 yards with two touchdowns, routinely showing his advanced skill set as a runner. With a full collegiate season added to his resume, Marshall will work to be the featured tailback for the Sun Devils in 2010.

A powerful back with the tools to be a difference maker as a sophomore, former walk-on James Morrison entered the spring in the best physical condition since arriving on campus in the fall of 2008. A prep standout at Phoenix’s St. Mary’s High School, Morrison appeared in seven games as a redshirt freshman last season, primarily as a special teams contributor. Entering his third year in the program, Morrison has been regarded as one of the team’s most improved players this offseason and will use his work ethic and physicality to earn an increased role as a junior.

After signing with the Sun Devils in 2009, Marcus Washington delayed his enrollment to ASU until this spring and quickly entered the fray to compete for time at running back. One of the state of Arizona’s premier running backs during his prep career at Phoenix Desert Vista High School, Washington, a former track and field standout in addition to his prominence on the gridiron, brings an

OutlOOkintriguing athletic presence to the Sun Devil offense.

This fall, a handful of offensive skill players will join the team with the ability to contribute at running back.

Skilled and speedy Deantre Lewis of Norco (Calif.) High School was rated by Rivals.com as the nation’s No. 20 running back prospect after rushing for 2,383 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2009, while in-state product Taylor Walstad of Chandler High School, Arizona’s top senior running back recruit last year, brings a tough, hard-nosed rushing presence to the lineup. Also, Kyle Middlebrooks of Fountain Valley (Calif.) High School is expected have the versatility to contribute at multiple positions for the Sun Devils.

WIDE RECEIVER

Perhaps the most noticeable change among ASU’s new offensive game plan will be the diverse, consistent use of the wide receivers as several multiple receiver sets are likely to be employed and a variety of athletes will be used to facilitate the short, intermediate and deep passing game.

In addition to the new offensive schemes, many new athletes will be in a position to emerge into duty as with former all-conference honorees Chris McGaha and Kyle Williams off to pursue professional football careers, the onus of responsibility lies in the possession of a new, exciting group of Sun Devil receivers.

Steve Broussard begins his first season on the Sun Devil staff as ASU’s wide receivers coach.

Senior Kerry Taylor enters the 2010 season as ASU’s active career-leader in receptions (58), receiving yards (734) and touchdown catches (four) while starting 14 of 34 career games played and is in the position to emerge as one of the primary targets in ASU’s offense. A former star at nearby Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High School, Taylor combines superb ball skills and route running to form a very complete package at wide receiver.

Gerell Robinson, a product of the same high school as Taylor, has the physical tools to emerge into a dynamic full-time starter as a junior. The biggest receiver on the roster, Robinson also stands as the leading returning pass-catcher from last year, having totaled 26 receptions for 261 yards in 2009. In total, Robinson has started five of 23 career games played and has the physical stature and athleticism to be a highly productive factor for the Sun Devils this season.

After transferring to ASU from Oregon last year, junior Aaron Pflugrad is in position to serve as one of ASU’s top options at a slot receiver. Speedy and sure-handed, Pflugrad caught 23 passes for 247 yards and one score during his two seasons in Eugene while also participating on special teams. An exciting player on ASU’s scout team last year while redshirting, Pflugrad has been a highly reliable receiver in practice and has every necessary trait to be a significant performer for the Sun Devils.

Competing with Pflugrad as a slot receiver will be sophomore Jamal Miles, who played in seven games with one start as a true freshman in 2009. Incredibly quick, agile and capable to dramatically impact the Sun Devil offense, Miles may provide a ‘hybrid’ type of role and see action both as a receiver and in a rushing capacity. One of the most exciting players on the offensive roster, Miles has the capability to be a top producer for ASU in 2010.

One of the team’s fastest players and a dangerous playmaker, T.J. Simpson likely will be one of the Devils’ top targets as a junior, but will miss spring drills due to injury. A graduate of Peoria (Ariz.) High School, Simpson is expected to be physically ready for fall camp.

George Bell signed a National Letter of Intent to attend ASU in February and is on campus to participate in spring drills after a stellar career at Southwestern Community College in San Diego, Calif. Boasting a compelling combination of size and speed, Bell was rated

by Rivals.com as the No. 3 junior college wide receiver in the nation and the country’s No. 32 overall junior college recruit this past season. He is expected to immediately compete for time in ASU’s multiple receiver sets.

Having only played in one game since the 2006 season due to a variety of injuries, Brandon Smith earned an extension of eligibility from the NCAA this offseason and enters 2010 as a sixth-year senior. When healthy, Smith has shown to be one of the fastest, most outstanding receivers on the squad and he will press for time during his final year as a Sun Devil.

Redshirt freshmen Jarrid Bryant and J.J. Holliday and sophomore A.J. Pickens will also add depth at receiver for the Sun Devils. Bryant is a tall, athletic target, while Holliday is a speedy, reliable presence in the pass game. Pickens has been one of the most improved players this Spring.

In the fall, junior college transfer Mike Willie, as well as true freshmen Kevin Anderson and Randy Knust will join the team at wide receiver. Speedster Kyle Middlebrooks will also arrive to start his collegiate career and has the versatility to play either tailback or wide receiver.

TIGHT END

As improvements are made throughout ASU’s offense, the tight end position group figures to upgrade as well, as players will serve quality roles in both protection schemes and in the passing game, and under the supervision of position coach Jamie Christian, the unit figures to provide reliable options to Sun Devil quarterbacks.

A former walk-on that persevered until he earned game action, Trevor Kohl enters fall as the first-string tight end after appearing in eight games last season. A junior in 2010, the local product originally from Gilbert (Ariz.) Mesquite High School provides a very capable presence in blocking schemes as well as standing as a viable option for Sun Devil quarterbacks.

Junior Dan Knapp enters 2010 as ASU’s longest-tenured tight end and the largest player on the roster at the position, having played in 16 games with nine starts over the past two seasons. An excellent blocker with the ability to be a factor in the pass game, the Reno, Nev., native rebounded from a late injury last season to be fully prepared to compete for time in spring drills.

Steven Figueroa enters his third year in the program and participated in four games last season after redshirting the previous year. A former standout at Phoenix (Ariz.) Desert Vista High School, Figueroa will compete for time as a reserve during his sophomore season.

Redshirt freshman Christopher Coyle is likely ASU’s most exciting tight end, bringing tremendous athleticism and receiving skills to the position group. A U.S. Army All-American during his stellar senior season at powerhouse Westlake (Calif.) Oaks Christian High School, Coyle was one of the nation’s premier tight end recruits in 2009 and has the skill set to work his way into the rotation quickly this season.

A key contributor to Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro High School’s dominant teams during his prep tenure, redshirt freshman Max Smith is regarded as a punishing blocker and will push for time during his first year on the field at ASU.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Perhaps no position on the roster figures to showcase a greater upgrade of talented depth than the offensive line, which features 12 scholarship linemen for spring drills and an overall talent level that has the potential to be the best during Coach Erickson’s tenure at ASU.

OutlOOkVeteran assistant coach Gregg Smith will mentor the offensive line

for the fourth season at ASU. An intriguing prospect, Brice Schwab signed with ASU in February

after an outstanding career at Palomar Junior College. Pegged atop the depth chart at left tackle, Schwab has the necessary size and athleticism to be a top-notch blind side protector for the Sun Devils and could also play right tackle if needed.

Redshirt freshman Evan Finkenberg has shown tremendous promise during his first year at the college level, adding 25 pounds to add bulk to his excellent athleticism. During spring drills, Finkenberg was slated to serve as Schwab’s top backup at left tackle but is also capable of playing either tackle position and has a very bright future on the Sun Devil line.

Walk-on Nick Emanuele, injured during the spring, also provides depth at left tackle.

Redshirt freshman Kody Koebensky figures to be a primary reserve at left guard, while junior Mike Marcisz, who excelled last year before suffering a season-ending injury, will likely provide a reliable reserve presence at offensive guard this season.

With the departure of Thomas Altieri from last year’s roster, junior Garth Gerhart figures to be locked in as the team’s top center after seeing action at both guard and center during his freshman and sophomore seasons. A gritty, powerful lineman, Gerhart brings the necessary qualities to be a skilled snapper in a full-time capacity this season.

Sophomore Andrew Sampson, also able to play guard, will likely serve as Gerhart’s primary reserve at center. The Colorado native is regarded as aggressive and strong and earned one start as a redshirt freshman last year while seeing action in all 12 games.

Walk-on Trent Marsh is likely to be the third option at center behind Gerhart and Sampson.

The state of Arizona’s top offensive line prospect during his high school career at Peoria Centennial, Zach Schlink had his development temporarily stalled last year due to an injury that caused him to sit out the entire season and utilize a redshirt. Fully recovered from the injury and in perhaps in the top physical condition of his playing career, Schlink entered spring football drills as the starter at right guard and brings a high ceiling of potential for his sophomore season after playing in six games with one start as a true freshman in 2008.

Veteran Adam Tello, listed by Coach Erickson as one of the most improved offensive players on the team, entered the spring as the top reserve at right guard and has shown incredible perseverance to work his way back up the depth chart. A former starter at right tackle, Tello has shown a greater level of potential at guard and will push for reps as a top backup as a junior.

Chris DeArmas joined the team in the spring after transferring from El Camino Junior College in Torrance, Calif. A weight room standout with tremendous intensity on the field, DeArmas is expected to be one of the team’s top contingents at guard while also having the versatility to see action at other line positions if needed. Originally from Miami, Fla., DeArmas was rated by Rivals.com as the No. 19 offensive guard prospect in the nation in 2005 and signed with the University of South Florida before ultimately ended up at El Camino.

Matt Hustad started all five games he played in 2009 before suffering an injury that ended his season and forced him to the injured list for spring football. Boasting all the traits needed from a top-notch offensive tackle, Hustad, the former Gatorade State Player of the Year in Montana, has the athletic upside to be an integral component among ASU’s protection schemes.

During his first two seasons in the football program, Kyle Johnson was featured among the depth chart at left tackle but was repositioned to the right side this offseason. Showcasing excellent length, Johnson saw action in a pair of contests as a redshirt freshman last year and will battle for a heightened role in 2010.

In addition to Schwab and DeArmas, four other linemen signed with ASU and are expected to join the team this fall.

Aderious Simmons, a junior college teammate of DeArmas and former basketball standout, brings an amazing physical frame and will compete for time at offensive tackle, as will true freshmen Jamil Douglas and Tyler Sulka.

Sil Ajawara, a high school teammate of Evan Finkenberg, was one of the top offensive guard prospects on the West Coast this past year and is expected to showcase his talents once arriving to Tempe in the fall.

DEFENSE

In 2009, ASU’s defense burst into one of the most prominent units in college football, ultimately leading the Pac-10 Conference in virtually all prominent defensive statistics and was rated among the nation’s top-30 in several major categories: fourth in third down conversion defense (29.65 pct.), 13th in total defense (297.58 ypg.), 19th in rushing defense (108.6 ypg.), 20th in pass efficiency defense (108.58 rating), 26th in both scoring defense (21.1 ppg.) and passing defense (189.0 ypg.), 28th in interceptions (15) and 29th in tackles-for-loss (6.58 per game).

The 2010 Sun Devil defense showcases the culmination of Coach Erickson’s primary recruiting objective since his arrival to ASU—stockpiling speedy, versatile and physical athletes at every defensive position to form a punishing and potentially dominant defensive unit.

Twelve players that started at least one game last season return to the Pac-10’s best defense, while new starters and reserves enable the coaching staff the luxury of rotating top-notch athletes in at every defensive spot on the roster.

DEFENSIVE LINE

With only one departure from the three-deep roster across the entire defensive line, the end and tackle positions figure to provide a potent punch up front to help pace ASU’s defense. Talent, size, experience and strength can be found at every slot on the depth chart giving the coaching staff the ability to rotate multiple players in at each position and maintain high levels of intensity and performance.

Grady Stretz, ASU’s longest-tenured coach on the staff, mentors the defensive line for the fifth season and in total, 14 of 16 scholarship defensive linemen return from last year’s team.

At defensive tackle, ASU’s main depth remains fully intact from last season as every major contributor returns for the 2010 season, led by starters Lawrence Guy and Saia Falahola.

Guy started his collegiate career in noteworthy fashion by netting first-team Freshman All-America honors and followed with an excellent sophomore season last year, totaling 37 tackles and a team-high 4.5 sacks. Through two years, the versatile Las Vegas native has started 19 of 23 career games played and brings a punishing combination of pass rush persistence and line of scrimmage aggressiveness that makes him one of the elite, most disruptive players at his position in the Pac-10 Conference.

One of the most improved defensive players last season, Falahola used his size and grit to emerge into one of the league’s most consistent defensive linemen, ranking second on the team among defensive linemen with 26 tackles, while leading ASU with 7.5 tackles-for-loss and adding 4.0 sacks in 12 games with 11 starts. After beginning his collegiate career at offensive guard, Falahola has developed into one of the team’s most stable defenders and looks to cap off his ASU career as a key member of one of the league’s best defenses.

Corey Adams and William Sutton both earned ample playing time as true freshmen last season and likely will serve as two of primary

In 12 games with two starts last year, Sutton compiled 17 tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss and 1.0 quarterback sack, routinely showing a tenacious knack to relentlessly pressure opposing ball carriers, while Adams, one of the state of Arizona’s most dominant defenders during his prep career at Scottsdale Saguaro High School, appeared in eight games and posted four total tackles before missing time due to an injury that ended his season and limited him in the spring.

Veteran Bo Moos provided a formidable presence at tackle when called into an increased role as the season progressed, totaling four tackles in eight games. Regarded as a stout, active defender, Moos’ development has peaked significantly over the past year and he is expected to be an integral reserve as a junior.

After appearing in five games at defensive end as a redshirt freshman last year, Toa Tuitea was relocated to defensive tackle for spring drills and has the talent and work ethic to fill the role as a pressing, relentless reserve to cycle in with his fellow tackles. Due to injuries to multiple tackles in the spring, Tuitea was able to earn increased reps at the position to prepare him for his sophomore season.

Jonathan English and Otis Jones both missed the entire 2009 season due to injuries and also remained unavailable for spring drills. English appeared in 24 games with one start during the 2007-08 seasons and has totaled 14 tackles and 3.5 tackles-for-loss, while Jones was primed to be a key contributor as a redshirt freshman last season before suffering a season-ending injury in the spring.

In the fall, freshmen Lee Adams, Joita Te’i and Calvin Tonga are expected to arrive on campus to compete for time along the defensive line.

Though Dexter Davis, who started an ASU record 50 games and ended his tenure ranked third on the school’s all-time sacks list, wrapped up his illustrious career last season and leaves a substantial void to fill, a group of hungry and athletic returning ends will vie for his starting spot at defensive end.

Gregory Smith showed tremendous upside in 10 games as a true freshman last year, consistently besting opposing offensive linemen and aggravating quarterbacks. Despite his underclass status, Smith entered spring drills as the first-string weak side defensive end and has the size, skill set and determination to maintain the standard of excellence established by Davis the past four seasons.

The competition at weak side defensive end is expected to continue to boil through the entire offseason as Smith will be stiffly challenged to maintain atop the depth chart by seniors Dean Deleone and Jamarr Robinson.

A former junior college transfer that joined the squad last spring, Deleone started there of 10 games played last year, tallying 14 tackles while adding a highly athletic component to ASU’s pass rush, while Robinson, one of the most athletic players on the entire defensive roster, is the longest-tenured end on the team and has a full physical arsenal at his disposal when called into action.

A starter in all nine games he played last season, James Brooks manned the strong side defensive end position to notable acclaim and his size and tenacity enable him to be a potential breakout player in his second full season as a starter in 2010. Through two seasons at ASU, the Flagstaff, Ariz., native has started nine of 20 games played with 28 tackles, 10.5 tackles-for-loss, 5.0 sacks and four pass breakups.

Jamaar Jarrett has been a reliable reserve during the first half of his collegiate career and looks to build upon his early experience as a junior and entered spring drills as Brooks’ top backup and one of the most talented ends on the roster. Boasting a great frame for the strong side of the defensive line, Jarrett has seen action in 21 career contests, posting 25 tackles and 4.5 tackles-for-loss.

Jordan McDonald and Nduka Onyeali, both notable pass rushers

at the high school level, will join the team as true freshmen in the fall.

McDonald was unanimously regarded as the top senior defensive end in the state of Arizona after totaling 79 tackles and 14.0 sacks for Scottsdale Saguaro High School, while Onyeali, the most highly-acclaimed freshman defensive addition among ASU’s 2010 signing class, was regarded among the nation’s premier athletes at his position and earned second-team All-America recognition as a senior by Max Preps.

LINEBACKER

Despite the losses of All-Pac-10 linebackers Travis Goethel and Mike Nixon from last year’s squad, the position group as a whole figures to be the driving force of ASU’s top-ranked defense, guided by a depth chart full of tenacious, active athletes at every linebacker position. With top-shelf talent in the starting lineup as well as at reserve positions, the Sun Devil linebackers have full potential to emerge as one of the elite defensive units in the Pac-10.

First-year assistant coach Trent Bray, a former All-Pac-10 linebacker during his playing days under Coach Erickson at Oregon State, guides ASU’s linebackers.

Vontaze Burfict came to ASU last fall with the credentials as the highest-ranked recruit ever to sign with the Sun Devils and lived up to that billing in quick fashion, earning Pac-10 Conference Defensive Freshman of the Year and Freshman All-America honors for his impressive efforts as a rookie in 2009.

In total, the Corona, Calif., native ranked second on the team with 69 tackles, adding 7.0 tackles-for-loss, five pass breakups, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 12 games with nine starts. Among returning Pac-10 defenders, Burfict ranks 12th in tackles from last season, while he enters his sophomore season as the team’s leading tackler from 2009.

Rated as the nation’s top middle linebacker prospect by all major recruiting services during his stellar career at Centennial High School, Burfict immediately upped the intensity, tenacity and overall effectiveness and attitude of the Sun Devil defense with his terrorizing tackles, uncanny instincts and unmatched athleticism.

Entering his sophomore season, Burfict is expected to be one of the guiding forces of ASU’s excellent defense and has garnered attention from league opponents and on a national scale thanks to his tremendous debut season in maroon and gold.

A very cerebral and intense athlete, Gerald Munns was awarded an extra year of eligibility to use in 2010 and provides highly capable, experienced depth at middle linebacker behind Burfict. The former Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High School standout is an excellent complement to Burfict at the position and serves as a veteran leader among the entire defense. The largest linebacker on the roster and able to play multiple linebacker positions, Munns has appeared in 36 career games with eight starts, tallying 82 tackles and 11.0 tackles-for-loss since his collegiate career began in 2006.

Derrall Anderson enters his second full season at middle linebacker after beginning his career as a contender at outside linebacker. The Tampa, Fla., native brings solid size and athleticism to the position and will vie for time as a reserve as a junior this season.

With the departures of Goethel and Nixon, full-time first-string openings emerge at both outside linebacker positions, where a pair of highly athletic candidates are likely to enter the starting lineup.

Brandon Magee enters his junior season poised to grasp a full-time starting role after serving as one of the defense’s top reserves the past two seasons, totaling 45 tackles and 7.0 tackles-for-loss in 20 career contests.

A former teammate of Burfict’s at Corona (Calif.) Centennial

OutlOOkHigh School and also a member of ASU’s top-ranked baseball team, Magee possesses the physical acumen to provide an athletic upgrade to the weak side linebacker position. Speedy and strong, Magee brings an intense, versatile presence to assist all facets of ASU’s defensive game plan.

One of the most ferocious tacklers on the entire roster, Oliver Aaron stands as a qualified reserve at weak side linebacker as well as a standout special teams contributor. A product of Gainesville, Fla., Aaron brings superb sideline-to-sideline speed to the Sun Devil defense and will push Magee for time at linebacker as a junior after appearing in 20 total contests during his first two seasons at ASU.

Mike Callaghan joined the Sun Devils as a walk-on in 2006 and enters his senior season having established himself as one of the better special teams contributors on the squad, totaling 15 tackles in 23 career games. Previously a reserve safety, the Phoenix native was moved to outside linebacker and will add depth on the weak side during his final season at ASU.

Junior Shelly Lyons looks to complete the Corona (Calif.) Centennial High School connection in ASU’s starting lineup at linebacker, as the third-year player entered spring drills atop the depth chart on the strong side, joining former prep teammates Burfict and Magee as first-stringers.

A contributor at multiple linebacker positions since his true freshman season, Lyons provides notable size and athleticism and boasts the skill set needed for him to emerge as a consistent, full-time starter. In 23 career contests, Lyons has totaled 53 tackles, three pass breakups and 1.5 tackles-for-loss.

Though Lyons entered spring football drills anointed as the top strong side linebacker, the competition behind him is expected to remain fierce as a pair of former Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High School graduates will compete for significant repetitions.

A Sun Devil legacy whose father, Anthony Parker, starred for ASU in the 1980s, Colin Parker enters his junior season poised to be one of the primary backups at strong side linebacker. A steady, intellectual contributor during the past two seasons, Parker has appeared in 19 total games on defense and special teams and looks to expand his responsibilities in 2010.

One of the most exciting young athletes on the Sun Devil defense, Anthony Jones has a very compelling skill set that makes him a strong candidate to contribute as a redshirt freshman this season. Unquestionably rated as the top senior linebacker in the state of Arizona during his final season at Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High School, Jones is a fast, hard-hitting, instinctive defender with the versatility to play multiple linebacker spots.

Walk-on Brandon Johnson adds depth at linebacker. True freshman Carl Bradford of Norco (Calif.) High School will join

the team in the fall after signing with ASU this February. Primarily a fullback at the high school level, Bradford brings tremendous upside and intensity to the middle linebacker position and was rated as the No. 16 inside linebacker prospect in the country by Rivals.com last year.

CORNERBACK

The quality and depth at cornerback has substantially increased since Coach Erickson’s arrival in 2007, and this season’s roster appears to be no exception as a combination of veteran talent and capable underclassmen fill the position group.

With assistant coach Greg Burns at the helm for his second season as cornerbacks coach, the position figures to be a defensive strength this year.

After suffering tremendous physical limitations last season, Omar

Bolden was awarded a medical hardship for the 2009 season and enters this year with two remaining seasons of eligibility. A confident, athletically gifted player, Bolden has been a starter since early in his true freshman season and has the physical gifts to be one of the conference’s standout defensive backs. As he begins his junior season, the Ontario, Calif., native will be expected to take on a leadership role as one of the main defensive veterans and entered spring drills healthy and rejuvenated. A starter in 23 of 29 career games played, Bolden has totaled 86 tackles, 14 pass breakups and four interceptions while also serving as a game-breaking kickoff return specialist.

Following injuries suffered to multiple players above him, Deveron Carr was promoted to the starting lineup last year and responded in excellent fashion, showcasing top-level speed and coverage skills while notching 10 tackles and three pass breakups in 11 games with three starts, prompting widespread enthusiasm for the remainder of his Sun Devil career. A graduate of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral High School, Carr was injured late in the season last year and entered the spring in a limited capacity, but is expected to be fully healed by the fall and will compete for a starting spot as a sophomore.

Veterans Josh Jordan and LeQuan Lewis will compete for time this season either in the starting lineup or as top reserves.

Lewis, a versatile senior and one of the fastest players on the team, entered spring drills as the second starter opposite Bolden after appearing in 10 games at cornerback, wide receiver and on multiple special teams units last year, while Jordan, a third-year contributor and a very competitive, cerebral student-athlete, has been one of the team’s top reserve cornerbacks the past two years and has played in 23 total contests.

Osahon Irabor, one of the top cornerback recruits on the West Coast as a high school player, arrived last fall and drew rave reviews before being forced to redshirt due to injury. Despite missing the 2009 season, Irabor entered spring drills cleared to compete and may be the most well-rounded cornerback on the roster and has limitless potential in the ASU secondary. Fast, smart and aggressive, Irabor began the spring among the two-deep roster at cornerback and will compete to earn significant action as a redshirt freshman this season.

Walk-ons Harrison Evens and Ronald Kennedy, Jr. add depth at cornerback.

In the fall, California natives Alden Darby of Long Beach Millikan High School and Devan Spann of Gardena Junipero Serra High School are expected to join the team and will enter the competition for time at cornerback.

SAFETY

Highlighted by youthful talent ready to take center stage and become a driving force on the back end of ASU’s sturdy defense, the Sun Devils’ safeties have the collective ability to provide a noteworthy athletic upgrade from previous seasons.

Led by defensive coordinator Craig Bray, who switches from linebackers coach to safeties coach, the position group as a whole stands to specifically benefit from the direction of one of the Pac-10 Conference’s finest defensive minds.

After earning valuable game experience as reserves, Clint Floyd and Keelan Johnson enter 2010 as the top candidates to emerge as ASU’s starting safeties and bring a potent mixture of athleticism, field awareness and versatility to the Sun Devil secondary.

One of the team’s most versatile defensive players, Floyd has seen action at both free and strong safety as well as on special teams, while also boasting an athletic resume that includes action at quarterback and wide receiver. A part-time starter during his first two years at ASU, Floyd is recognized as a tremendously intelligent

Arguably as athletic as his colleague at safety, Johnson arrived at ASU as a wide receiver before being relocated to safety, while also seeing action as one of the team’s primary kickoff return specialists last season as he saw action in all 12 games with one start at safety. Ranked atop the spring depth chart at free safety, the Mesa (Ariz.) High School graduate is perhaps the most physically gifted safety on the team and has substantially refined his skill set this offseason and enters his sophomore season with very high expectations.

Junior college transfer Eddie Elder signed with the Sun Devils in February following a highly-acclaimed two-year stint at the College of San Mateo (Calif.). As a sophomore in 2009, Elder garnered Junior College All-America honors by Scout.com and corralled 14 interceptions during his two-year career at San Mateo. Speedy, relentless and able to cover a great deal of ground in the secondary, Elder entered spring drills as the top reserve at free safety and will vie for ample action during his first year at ASU.

Veterans Jonathan Clark and Max Tabach are listed as the reserves at free safety behind Johnson and Elder. Clark, entering his fourth year in the program and a member of Coach Erickson’s first signing class at ASU, is a versatile athlete able to play multiple positions in the secondary while Tabach, a Scottsdale native, has appeared in 17 total games including all 12 last year, recording a total of 15 career tackles at ASU.

At strong safety, the primary depth consists of a pair of well-rounded redshirt freshman, both of which are capable of making notable contributions as first-year players this season.

Matthew Tucker enters 2010 with a wealth of team experience despite his underclass status, having enrolled in the spring of 2009 and practiced with the team during that session as well as during his redshirt season last year. An intelligent player with a high athletic ceiling, Tucker starred at quarterback and defensive back at Aurora (Colo.) Grandview High School and entered spring practice as the second-string strong safety behind Floyd.

An energetic Sun Devil with a great work ethic and team attitude, local product Shane McCullen of Apache Junction (Ariz.) High School switched to safety to begin his college career after a record-setting prep tenure at running back. A fast and persistent athlete with the ability to create an impact both as a run defender in the box and in pass coverage, McCullen redshirted as a true freshman to acclimate to his new position and enters 2010 as a potentially key reserve at strong safety.

In the fall, in-state star Ramon Abreu will make the short trip from Tempe’s Marcos de Niza High School to ASU after an illustrious prep career that included multiple all-state honors as he was the heart-and-soul for the Padres as a running back, linebacker, punter and on returns. Once on campus, Abreu will begin his collegiate career competing for time at safety.

SPECIAL TEAMS

With seniors at kicker and punter, an experienced long snapper and dynamic specialists in the returns game, ASU boasts capable and disciplined athletes across all special teams units, guided by special teams coach Jamie Christian.

One of the Pac-10’s best kickers, Thomas Weber, the 2007 Lou Groza Award winner, enters his fourth and final year as ASU’s top placekicker.

During his first three years at ASU, Weber has connected on 51-of-63 total field goal attempts for a sensational conversion

percentage of .809, with a long kick of 53 yards set at UCLA during his redshirt freshman season.

The owner of multiple All-America, All-Conference and Academic All-Conference accolades, Weber also served as ASU’s punter during the majority of his first two seasons and is also expected to continue to handle kickoff duties as he has during his entire career.

Bobby Wenzig was called into emergency duty as a true freshman last year when Weber missed time due to injury, connecting on 3-of-4 attempts with a long of 43 yards. As a sophomore this season, he will likely serve as the top backup for all major placekicking duties.

Punter Trevor Hankins worked his way to a full-time spot in 2009 after limited time the previous season and was an accomplished, reliable punter as a junior, averaging 44.2 yards on 69 punts on the season. Hankins, a Scottsdale native, enters his senior season as ninth-ranked punter in the nation and is also expected to once again serve as ASU’s holder for placekicking attempts.

Junior Thomas Ohmart returns for his third season as ASU’s long snapper after consistent play at the position during his freshman and sophomore years.

Sophomore Jamal Miles, also an exciting, speedy all-purpose offensive threat, has the potential to see increased action as a specialist both on kickoff and punt returns, while sophomore Keelan Johnson excelled on kickoff returns last season and likely will return to that duty.

Omar Bolden, who ran the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown against Louisiana-Monroe last year, likely will compete for continued special teams duties while players such as Clint Floyd, LeQuan Lewis, A.J. Pickens, Aaron Pflugrad and T.J. Simpson have the capability to compete for action in the returns game this season.
