The Rogers State baseball program enters the 2010 sea-son aiming to regain its footing as a rising star in theSooner Athletic Conference.

The Hillcats suffered a minor setback in their climb tothe top with a disappointing finish in 2009. However, with the heart of the batting order set to return and alarge crop of coveted recruits now in the fold, RSU willlook to join the league's elite programs this spring.

“I feel like our pitching staff, with the arms that we'veadded, is going to give us the opportunity to competeon a national level,” RSU Head Coach Ron Bradley said.“We have some key returners back on offense, and ourdefense should continue to be a strength for us, sowe're looking to take a big step forward this year.”

Last season the SAC not only produced the 2009 NAIANational Champion, Lubbock Christian, but also placedfour teams in the final national rankings and sent twoteams to the World Series. The Diamond Cats believethey are in position to join the ranks of national con-tenders as they take the field in 2010.

RETURNERSOnly 11 players who saw game action for the Cats in2009 are back for the 2010 campaign. Although smallin number, the veterans should provide a strong anchorfor a talented ball club.

Fifth-year senior Zach Hamby headlines the list ofreturners. Hamby put up monster numbers during hisfirst two seasons on the Hill, setting team single-seasonrecords for hits, doubles, total bases, and slugging per-centage among others. The Tahlequah, Okla., native ison pace to shatter the RSU career home run record with24 dingers entering his final season.

Rob Rodriguez, Joe Manbodh, and Luis Caraballo returnto their respective spots on the Hillcat infield. Rodriguezfinished second on the team in home runs and RBI asthe Cats' everyday first baseman in 2009. Manbodh hit.367 while handling the bulk of the catching duties, andCaraballo was a defensive standout in his first seasonas the RSU shortstop. Senior Tyler Harold will also havea chance to crack the starting lineup in the outfield afterserving as the team's primary courtesy/pinch-runnerthe past two seasons.

Senior Grant Cosby will once again be a fixture inDiamond Cats' starting rotation. The right-hander post-ed five wins and three complete games in 2009. Cosbyhas a career record of 10-2 and has amassed 86 strike-outs and just 22 walks during his three years at RSU.Seniors Cristian Baez, DJ Thompson, and Jake Taylor, along with sophomore Josh Phillippi, will also providevaluable experience for the Hillcat pitching staff.

“This is a very talented group of veteran players,”Bradley noted. “Most of them have been with us for acouple of years and they know exactly what it takes tocompete and win in the Sooner Athletic Conference.”

NEWCOMERSThe Hillcats added quality and quantity to their pitchingstaff by signing five left-handed hurlers and a pair ofhard-throwing righties for the spring. Junior right-han-der Tyler Garner is expected to step in immediately as aweekend starter after serving as the ace of the CarlAlbert staff in 2009. Jacob Weenas, a 6-7 southpawfrom Connors State, and Jordan Clark, a 6-5 righty fromSeminole State, will also vie for a spot in the startingrotation. Left-handers Drew Taylor, Jim Miner, andCasey Cassity should help provide depth in the RSUbullpen.

Sophomore catcher Lance Rymel also transferred fromSeminole State and will see significant time behind theplate, while junior Colton West will take over at thirdbase after starting for two seasons at the University ofArkansas-Fort Smith. Bradley labeled Rymel as “one ofthe best throwing catchers in the state,” and calledWest “a plus defender who hits for both average andpower.”

Two familiar faces will also make their official Hillcatdebut in 2010. Juniors Kevin Radford and Brandt Barnesredshirted after transferring to RSU in January 2009.Both players run well and hit from the left side andboth will have the opportunity to crack the starting line-up in the outfield.

Sophomore Billy Balak and junior Pau Sancho are alsoexpected to compete for playing time on the infield.Redshirt freshman Steven Smith impressed the coach-ing staff with his power in the fall and will likely getsome at-bats this spring, while true freshman KeithPoverud could also provide depth in the RSU outfield.

“Overall we're very pleased with this recruiting class,”Bradley said. “We feel like we addressed our biggestneeds and also added some depth to our bench andour bullpen, which should pay dividends once confer-ence play begins.”

The Rogers State baseball program posted its third con-secutive winning season with a 29-21 mark in 2009. TheHillcats continued to build on their reputation as a con-tender in the Sooner Athletic Conference, but lacked theconsistency needed to compete for their first WorldSeries berth.

“I felt like we had our most talented team to date in2009,” RSU Head Coach Ron Bradley said. “In that regardI feel like we underachieved in terms of wins and losses. We struggled with a lack of pitching depth and lost anumber of close games by giving up the lead late. Thosefour or five games we let slip away really prevented usfrom having the type of season we were hoping for.”

RSU rattled off seven straight victories following a 1-0loss to Doane College in the season opener. The hotstreak included a four-game sweep of Kansas Wesleyan, which finished the season ranked in the Top 25.

However, the Cats were quickly brought back to earthwith the start of conference play. RSU dropped threegames by a total of six runs to USAO in the first SACseries of the year. The sweep put the Hillcats in a deephole and forced them to play catch-up in the conferencestandings for the rest of the season.

RSU bounced back by taking two of three games fromNorthwestern Oklahoma State, but was swept again thefollowing week by second-ranked Oklahoma City. TheDiamond Cats earned their only conference sweep of thespring against St. Gregory's in mid-March.

Coach Bradley's club held its own the rest of the way, notching series wins over Oklahoma Baptist and Mid-America Christian and stealing victories against a pair ofranked foes: Wayland Baptist and Lubbock Christian.

Beating the top-ranked Chaparrals on their home fieldwas easily the pinnacle of the spring. RSU handed LCU itsworst home loss in nearly a decade with an 18-8 deci-sion that snapped the Chaps 16-game winning streak. The Diamond Cats belted five home runs in the contestand received a gutsy complete-game performance fromjunior hurler Grant Cosby. LCU went on to claim its sec-ond NAIA National Championship a month later.

“There's no doubt that the highlight of our season wasgoing to Lubbock Christian and beating them on theirhome field,” Bradley said. “That allowed us to realize thatwe're knocking on the door and our program is on theverge of making a mark on the national scene.”

Hillcat Baseball 2009 Season in ReviewAlthough the conference slate proved to be a rocky road,RSU flexed its muscle during the non-conference portionof the schedule. The Cats went 16-5 against non-SACopponents and earned notable victories over KansasWesleyan, Texas Wesleyan, and regional-rivalNortheastern State.

RSU continued its tradition of dominance on the hometurf by going 20-11 at the Hillcat Complex. The Hillcatshave posted a 56-31 record at their Claremore park sinceit opened in 2007.

The RSU offense rewrote the record books for the secondconsecutive spring with a deep and powerful lineup.Junior Zach Hamby set new team marks for hits, doubles, total bases, and RBI on his way to earning second-teamall-conference accolades. Senior Coby Wright posted arecord .428 batting average to go along with a .559 on-base percentage, and senior outfielder Brandon Dentonwas named to the SAC Gold Glove team for his stellardefensive play in centerfield. The Hillcats' seven seniorseach made significant contributions in their final seasonon the Hill.

“We had a very special group of seniors,” Bradley said.“Those guys laid the foundation for our recruiting andwill be able to look back on their careers knowing theyhad a major impact on the development of the RSUbaseball program.”

u 2009 senior Ryan Littlejohn belted 21 home runs and drovein more than 100 runs during his three years with the Hillcats.
