FOOT TRAFFIC FLAT MARATHON (7/4/11) – PORTLAND, OR

I was hoping for a repeat of last year when the weather was absolutely perfect for running (overcast in the50s/60s) since our weather has sucked all year. With those conditions on this fast course, I ran 3:20:31 fora PR. I think I'm in shape to better that but I never got the chance. First, we finally hit some "summer"weather and, while it wasn't brutal like it has been in the past, it was warm enough. And, second, I camedown with a cold a couple of days before the race. The cold was still in my throat (very sore throat) andhadn’t made it up to my head yet but I'm sure it didn't help. However, I still started out at a 3:20 pace running along with ManiacBob Hearn. Bob likes to run negative splits (I like even splits) and we kept it at around a 3:18-3:19 pace from the start. The racedoesn't do two loops anymore but has added an out and back along Multnomah Channel. As we were running out, we definitelyfelt a headwind and, sure enough, on the way back (each way is around 6 miles) there was a tailwind. Unfortunately, the tailwinddidn't really help and made it feel a lot hotter. The sweat was really pouring down and I knew pretty early on that I wasn't goingto make a 3:20. We did pass the halfway mark in around 1:39 but when Bob said it was time to speed up for the second half, Itold him to go on ahead. He left me at mile 14 and I saw him next when he was finishing strawberry shortcake (he finished inaround 3:13 -- talk about negative splits).

As for me, I plodded along not really slowing down much until the last few miles. At mile 20, I wasaround 2:32, which was 2 minutes slower than at Newport a month ago when I cramped up over thelast 5 miles. This time I didn't cramp (took more S-caps) so the slow down wasn't as much and Iactually beat my Newport time by a bit.

So, my quest for 3:20 is probably gone for the year and I'll use my Boston time of 3:22:28 for Boston, which will probably give me a start towards the front of the second wave. This year I was in the lastcorral of the first wave with my 3:20:31. I'm going on a bit of a Marathon hiatus since I only havetwo more scheduled this year -- Niagara Falls towards the end of October and Santa Barbara in mid-November. Neither one seem like a good one to push, though Niagara Falls looks fast. Of course, tothe delight of my northern friend, there is great possibility of snow and/or cold temps and this bodydoesn't fair well in that environment anymore.

It was great seeing all the Maniacs and Fanatics down here for the race and the Triple. I had a funtime at dinner on Saturday night and hanging out before and after the race with lots of friends. Steve Walters deserves a majorshout out for the great job he did organizing the Triple. I've only heard wonderful reports about the organization, etc -- PortlandMarathon are you listening? You could have run all three races for less than Portland and got treated a lot better, without a tonof emails going out about "oh my gosh, we are just about filled up -- but wait, here is a discount code or, but wait, we are startinga National campaign, or embrace the train or ..." :-)

As a Maniac we take pride in being able to run many marathons in a year. While most of the American population is watching the “MatlockMarathon” we are out there running a “real” marathon a weekend, maybe two, three, or four. The fact that we enjoy the calve burns, hip strains, quad lockups makes us a Maniac, and we enjoy this, right!

So as a Maniac what happens when running one, two, three, or four marathons a weekend just isn’t enough, it’s too easy? Well we have to go on tobigger and better things. This is where Badwater fits the bill. There will never be a time when a race like Badwater will be easy to finish, it just isn’tgoing to happen. Running 5+ marathon in a row in heat that can reach over 130 degrees, climbing 2 mountain passes, and a hell of a 5,000’ climb inthe last 8 miles of a 135 mile race cannot come easy, I don’t care who you are.

Badwater is unlike any marathon where you’re catered to every few miles with Dixie cups full of wateror Gatorade, there are no aid stations, you have to bring your own in the form of crew/pacers (ormules). They are never allowed to set pace for you, only aid in cooling you down, carrying water, retrieving food, and other aid. The logistics of this race are immense. Because you have put so muchinto this race it becomes a huge challenge. Securing crew/pacers, heat training, endurance training, reading EVERYTHING to understand how to tackle the race, finding a vehicle, booking hotel rooms, figuring out how much food, water and ice for everyone in your group, and the list goes on and on. Tobe quite honest doing all of this was harder than running the race.

The big build up that we all feel before a big race is always full of excitement, joy, fear, and nerves thatare about to unravel. I have felt this so many times so I choose to ignore it, I knew it would all go awayas soon as Chris Kostman said “GO”. Well it did, just about! The 1st 17 miles of this race I wasn’tallowed a pacer. I didn’t have any crew support for about 3 miles. I found myself in this state of awe atthe beauty of the area, the fact that I was actually running in my dream race with some of the bestultrarunners in the world made me emotional, I never get that way. Just a few months before theevent was the 20th year since my father died. We use to run together when I was a youth in ValdezAlaska. I found myself thinking about him and getting teary eyed that he couldn’t be here on this bigday physically, then I realized he was here with me emotionally, that was all I needed for him to helpme through this huge challenge.

I was lucky to have picked an amazing crew Delores, Kevin, Joel, Faye, Heidi, and Linda. They alwaysknew exactly what to do in every circumstance. I only had a few issues, puking at the Beatty Cutoff, blister lancing at Keeler, these were expected. Because of my fantastic crew I was able to finish about 3hours ahead of my projected time. The course is amazingly hard, beautiful, hot, long, and satisfying!!!

So for all you Maniacs that want a real challenge Badwater might be for you, start training now, getyour qualifications done and join us next year.

There were 7 Maniacs that ran the race this year. All 7 finished, this shows the world what the Marathon Maniacs are made of.

The SWEET taste of a finish line! Jess Mullen, Terry Sentinella and Ed Ettenhausen cross the Badwater finish line after 135 miles of heat!

It’s hard to describe in words what this race is like. It is unique in many ways – the distance is a bit farther than most races (using the100 mile distance as a reference), it’s a bit hotter than most races, there are no aid stations, it is completely on the road, and you havea crew that sees you most every mile of the race. I absolutely loved it. All of my expectations of misery were met!

It was much more a ‘team’ event than a solo run and I had an amazing team. The first major section of the race (~42 miles) fromBadwater to Stovepipe Wells is the hottest and I handled the heat surprisingly well. Going into the race I was most concerned aboutthis section. The most memorable part of the race was during the night. It was majestic in the desert with the moon and stars. Weskipped the headlamp for the most of the night and just let the moon (and our blinking red lights) guide us. It was peaceful andmagical. The second day was the hardest – dealing with the sun and heat after all the miles the day before. I also had gotten slightlydehydrated (my weight was down) and had some bathroom issues. My feet were on fire. They felt raw and hot (but only one blister, thank goodness). The stretch between Darwin (~mile 90) and Lone Pine (mile 122) was boring and mostly straight road with expansiveviews. I ran for hours and felt like I’d gotten nowhere. Finally, the last climb, to the Whitney Portals was scenic but steep. Reachingthe finish line was a special moment, not only because it was the finish, but also because I had thought about (dreamed about) reachingthis point for 5 months and I couldn’t believe it was actually happening. Then I sat down and all the pain set in!

I had 5 members in my crew. Van Phan was my crew chief and made sureeverything ran smoothly. Sara Malcolm was the accountant and made sure Itook all the necessary food, supplements, hydration, etc at the specified times.Matt Hagen was the publicist and made sure updates were reported and photoswere taken. Eric Barnes was our medic and took care of my aching feet. MikeMullen arrived the evening of the first day and helped cycle-in to give othercrew members more time to rest. He helped pace and crew. Everyone helpedpace, each running 4 miles at a time. The team worked well. I had a successfulrace and would do it again in a heartbeat..

Each month there will be a “Maniac poll”. This poll will be posted online. Pleasetake a few moments to answer this poll. I will post the results in the nextnewsletter.

This month’s question: Which do you prefer, trails or roads?

Please vote online between now and September 5: http://www.marathonfreak.com/maniacpoll

Last month’s question: Do you prefer to runmarathons on Saturdays or Sundays?

It’s pretty clear most Maniacs like to run amarathon on Saturdays. Of the 90 votes in thismonth’s poll, 67% prefer to run a marathon onSaturdays. Thanks for voting!

My race started at 0800. It was still below 100 °F. I started off easy, running 9:30 miles. The 1st bit of the race went quite smoothly. After I droppeddown into Furnace Creek, I picked up my dad (Mike Blessing) as a pacer. He ran with me until he got dehydrated and had to stay in the crew vehicleuntil he got his fluids up again. Every time I passed a puddle of vomit I rejoiced I felt good. I took many break during this section to sit in a chair withmisters that soaked me in ice water. I got goose bumps at 118 °F! I felt really good arriving at Stovepipe Wells, arriving more than a half hour earlierthan expected. From there, I powered up the big climb to Towne Pass, running the next 18 miles in about 4:30. Some of the leaders passed methrough this section, but that is only because they are the leaders and are much faster than me. I felt great!

I arrived at the top of Towne Pass at 8:30 PM. It was still quite light out, and a big moon was rising. I (carefully)flew down into the Panamint Valley, arriving at Panamint Springs (~72 miles) in 15:04, arriving about an hour anda half earlier than scheduled. I was waiting to use the restroom and was talking to some other crew members, Ithought it was great that they thought I was crewing for someone because I looked so good (they couldn't see mybib number). I started the climb up Father Crowley, and started falling asleep. I was weaving around the road, anddecided to stop at F.C. Viewpoint and get some rest. I slept for 20 minutes.

After that, I charged all the way to the finish. The bright moon rendered headlamps useless. The night wasbeautiful. Mark Matyazik passed me between F.C. and Darwin, and he was the last to do so. After the moon set,the Milky Way showed itself. A wonderful night run. I arrived at Darwin at 4:41, about 1:20 earlier thananticipated. I knew my race was going well at this point. I was developing blisters, but I chose not to mess withthem and run as long as I could with them. The sun rose between 6:00 and 6:30 AM. I was close to ~95 miles atthis point. I realized I would run 100 miles in under 24 hours, which blew my mind considering the terrain I hadcovered and the heat I had endured. I reached the 100 mile mark in 23:21.

I knew there was no slowing down from this point. From here on out, I made a commitment to push as hard as Icould to the Mt. Whitney Portal. The temperatures climbed, but my awesome crew kept me soaked with icewater and bumped up the motivation a notch. I was running hard, doing 12-15 minute miles consistently. I got abloody nose, and that stopped me for a bit, but I was back on my feet quick. Owens River showed up after a longstretch, and after that I could see Highway 395 in the distance. I reached it eventually and turned the cornertoward Lone Pine.

I reached the Dow Villa Motel and took a five minute rest, then charged up the Whitney Portal road. I ran until the grade made walking faster, then Ipowered at a 16-17 minute mile. My feet hurt excruciatingly, but I didn't want to slow down to do anything about this. The road got steeper andsteeper, but I walked faster the closer to the finish I got. I reached the switchbacks and really hiked hard. I was out of breath. I kept moving, and thefinish grew closer and closer. Before I knew it, I had reached the overflow parking for the Mt. Whitney Trailhead. I started running, and saw the finishline finally. I burst into an all-out sprint (my Garmin said I reached 4:30 pace) and blasted through the finish tape, finishing in 32:46:12, a fineperformance considering I was expecting something in the 36 hour range, at best.

The Marathon Show (hosted by Maniac #1817, Joe Taricani) was first broadcast in June 2010. It’s a one of akind show that spot lights the marathon and marathon runners. Maniacs have found a safe haven with thisgreat show. A few times a week Joe broadcast the show live online, the shows are then made available todownload from iTunes (via Podcast). Each week Joe features a marathoner, and often does shout outs tomarathoners from all over. Another great part of this show is the “runners chat”, in these shows Joe getsthree marathoners together and does a round table discussion about many great topics. So if you havealready come across the show, please do.

Check it out and tune in! http://www.themarathonshow.com

The Marathon Show Marathon was held July 23, 2011 in Newport Beach, CA. The race was billed as "Small,Free, Fun and Different." The race was hosted by The Marathon Show host, Joe Taricani in hisneighborhood. The race was 100% free and people registered on a first-come, first-served basis. It wascertainly small - only 11 people started the race. What made it different was the manner in which the race wasstarted. Everyone ran with a goal of finishing at 10:00 am which meant people started running between 2:50am and 6:00 am. The race was run on a 3.03 mile loop course so everyone got to visit on the course a coupletimes. "We finished in a city park, sat in the shade and celebrated together as everyone came across the finishline," said Joe Taricani. With thanks to Allied Running Medal Hangers in Redmond, WA, each participant wasgiven a special chrome medal in the shape of The Marathon Show logo.

Everyone out did themselves this month! I figured July would be a thin month, but the Maniacsstepped up and took a lot of photos. I wish I could have included them all. I really enjoyedreading about the seven Badwater Maniacs and seeing photos from GCI Ultra, Missoula, Tunnel,Leadville, Missoula, Mad and so many other marathons. The Maniacs are truly everywhere!

The month started out very busy for me, I was at the helm of two races! RDing two races in order to make the Firecracker Triple was a lot of work, but a huge success! I enjoyed meeting so many Maniacs from all over the country and celebrating the success of many Maniacs first triple!

Good job everyone and keep up the good work! August is a thin month for marathons so be sure to send me your pictures! Happy Running!

F R O M T H E R A M B U N C T I O U S R E V

Hiya Prez!

So let me get the beginning story straight: you and your two slim buddies ran yet one of manymarathons, then sat down, reflecting on that morning in one of the area’s finer establishments, sipping somesophisticated suds, and a fellow at the table suggested that because you three ran marathons so frequently, you were maniacs. Giggles all around, ideas started popping like Orville Redenbachers’ corn, we fast forwardseemingly three life-times and eight years later, and you sit atop a club of 4,000 people whose drug of choiceis endorphins, and whose goal in life is to become TitaniumMan and TitaniumWoman (sounds like some sortof 21st Century superheroes). Can’t spell it, but can count the ten stars.

You three are not so much responsible for our Nuts Statuses as you are to be commended for creating an asylum where we are welcomed, applauded even. Some of us knew we were nuts before we met you. But given that you underlined it and made it cool for us to publicize it on ourshirts, we ponder it more. We make new discoveries about ourselves. We ARE a tad different from Charlie across the street.

In running alone, even we quite-contented plodders accomplish what the world’s coach potatoes find unthinkable. Some who are attemptingto get faster with practice run in rain and hail with hopes to get to Boston. There are the Sean Meissner and Mary Hanna types who actually arespeedy. Frequently. Mind-boggling. Then too, we can’t comprehend what it is our octogenarian members experience, until perhaps someday wewill be lucky enough to be octogenarically nuts.

But how are we in our lives otherwise tenacious? Our brand of maniacism may have its downside, but I marvel at and like the fun we create. One member I know, nice enough guy, cute wife, civilized kids, has run only one marathon this year. Is he a maniac then, really? Well, he ran thatmarathon without some important ankle ingredient, torn a month earlier. The severity became clear after the marathon, when the foot lookedmore like a football. Something nuts there.

So the guy succumbed to the medical brace treatment, yet six months into incomplete “recovery” decided to try out the ailing appendage byplaying golf. Here’s where you people get interesting. It was not ordinary golf. Nah, that wouldn’t do. Choose noon, 95 degrees (so the coursewould be empty), tee up not one, but four golf balls, play 18 holes, 4 simultaneous times, over 5 ½ hours (which approximates “marathon” timefor some of us, there, Prez), and trust me, one’s shoulders would feel a bit like one’s mile-24 quadriceps.

But it is not maniacal … unless … the knucklehead … goes out and … does it again the next day.

You are different. You are fun. And You are different. Keep an eye on how. And how you apply it. There ought to be some pretty creativeupsides to whatever it is we’ve got inside our noggins, torsos, hearts. (More creative than Whacko’s golf, surely.) Endorphins arise! Who knows towhat wonderful ends?

(But Prez, you tell Larry, Yolanda, TP, TC, Bell, Lopez, ESPECIALLY MacGyver, and all the rest who have promised me that I can do a marathondouble… maybe, maybe not. That golf double seems as close, and sore, as I think I’m going to get to your running version, two in two days! Huh!You are more marvelous than you credit yourselves. You’re also… nuts! But it does seem we were created this way for some good purposes.)
