June 2010 – Lesson Guide 2

June 2, 2010 - छ + vowels Remember the vowels:

अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ अ

Last week we looked at how these vowels mix with the first consonant च. Today, we look at the same pattern but with the second letter छ. These two consonants sound very, very similar. But they make different sounds for a Hindi speaker. In order to get the sound right, we need to over emphasize the difference. The first one has very little air. Try to say it with no air. च The second one is harder with a lot of air, छ.

After you go through today’s lesson with छ and each of the vowels, go to the other lesson on च and the vowels to practice hearing the difference.

छ + अ = छ छत (f) roof

छ+ आ = छा छाता (m) umbrella

छ+ इ = िछ – – िछपाना to hide, conceal (related word: – िछपना to be hidden)

छ + ई = छी – – छीलना to skin, to peel

छ + उ = छ – छरी (f) knife

छ + ऊ = – – छ छना to touch, to feel

छ + ऋ = छ -

छ + ए = – छ छद (m) hole

छ + ऐ = छ – छौल- छबीला silly

छ + ओ = – – छो छोटा small

छ + औ = – – छौ छौकना to season

छ + अ = छ छद (m) poetic meter

the lord Buddha(a Religion) attained knowledge( gyan – जान) under a tree. At Bodhgaya, a huge congregation of Buddhist monks take place time to time. The Great Emperor Ashoka spread Budhhism all over the world especially in Asia( India, Srilanka,China,Singapore etc.). He fought a great Kalinga war where millions of people were killed. He could not see bloodshed any more. Thus, he took the path of Ahimsa अिहसा -(non-violence) later.

Another example for Ahimsa is : Mahatma Gandhi(Father of Nation ) who fought his battle of independence(freedom struggle) for India(also spread in Africa) through AHIMSA(Non-violence).

Some other drinks(Peya in Hindi ) are:

शरबत : sharbat(juice or squash ). Aam ka sharbat swadisht (सवािदष) hota hai. The mango juice is tasty.

लससी -Lassi(made up of curd)- Punjab ki lassi vishwa vikhyat hai. Punjb’s lassi is world famous

Gaay is also called Gayya or gau in rustic form.(village level) in India. The cow has got the respect of mother in India. I have personally seen that in Nasik (Mahrashtra province of India)Pinjrapoke, the barren cows, abandoned ones are reared very well there and treated. The free milk distribution system is in vogue there or milk is sold at nominal rates. Believe me that the cows are given names like Saraswati,(Name of the Indian Goddess) Lakshmi, Kalyani etc. . They respond well when you call asking Saraswai etc. They are graceful. They are awarded prizes for their beauty, performance etc after a competition is organized every year.

-Doodh sek makhan banta hai( Butter is made up of milk).

-Makhan se ghee taiyar kee jaati hai.(Clarified butter is prepared out of butter).

- Bacchon ke mansik evam sharireek vikas ke liye Daal aur ghee dee jaati hai .( The lentils(pulses) and ghee are given for the mental and physical growth of the children.

The buffalo is black.

Bhainsee(Buffalo- i.e she/feminine). Bhainsee kaali hoti hain. ( in होती Hoti – ती ti)

काला (Kala )means black which is a colour(Rung in Hindi). काली(black) is a feminine colour .

( bhaise kaley hote hain.- Plural). Ta, converts into Te. Buffaloes are black.

Like, vah jaata hai.=- He goes. (singular) . Ve jaatey hain.= They go . (plural) Hai changes to Hain. As stated earlier one . (dot) is added in Hai ( ह )to make Hain.( ह)

Saand(Bull). Yah saand tagda hai( This bull is strong).

Spain sannd ki ladai ke liye prakhyat hai.(Spain is famous for bull fight).

=Neembu(lemon) ki chaay bhi mujhe pasand hai. (I also like lemon tea.)

=Mujhe ilaychi(इलायची ) i.e .cardamom ki chaay bhee bahut pasand hai.

namaste nathan …

i would like to thank u for ur podcasts …they have helped me a lot to get a greater understanding of the language..i don’t understand the usage of ’ne’ . Hopefully u will explain this in ur upcoming lessons ….

also …how do u say’ i kept the book on the table’

also ….when do u use rahi instead of raha??

dhanyawad

न is used in the past tense with transitive verbs. Take a look at the episodes Past Tense with ne (9/6/2009) and Past Tense without ne (9/7/2009).

You say “I kept the book on the table.” by saying “ ”म न िकताब मज पर रखी।

रहा is used to create the continuous tense. I can say, “I work.” by saying “ ” म काम करता ह। but if I want to say “I am working.” This changes to “ ”म काम कर रहा ह। . However, these sentences only work if they are said by a man.

If a woman was to say, “I work.” she would say “ ”म काम करती ह। . And if she were to say, “I am working.” she would say “ ”म काम कर रही ह। . See the episode Present Continuous Tense (8/25/2009).
