Deli Dinner Delight! | Wednesday, November 3Dinner 6 pm | Lecture at 7 pmDavid Sax Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye and the Heart of Jewish DelicatessenAs a journalist and life-long, deli-obsessed connoisseur, David Sax was understandably alarmed by the state of the Jewish delicatessen—a cuisine that was once at the center of Jewish life had become endangered by assimilation, homogenization and health food trends. He watched one beloved deli after another shut down, one institution after another shuttered only to be reopened as a bland chain-restaurant laying claim to the very culture it just paved over. David set out on a journey across the U.S. and around the world in search of the authentic delicatessen. Was it still possible to Save the Deli?Join us for a delicious authentic deli dinner and hear David speak about his deli world travels—the food, how it is made, its history and diaspora, and,

most importantly, its next generation!David Sax’s work has appeared in New York Magazine, Vanity Fair and on National Public Radio. Save the Deli is a Los Angeles Times Bestseller, winner of the 2010 Canadian Jewish Book Award for memoir, and nominated for a 2010 James Beard Award. Recently married, he is from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.Dinner reservations required by October 25th.

Community One Read

Mindful Matters

Tuesday, November 9 | 10:30 amPam Jenoff Almost HomeRead this hard-to-put-down book and then join the author for a lively discussion about the novel, its meanings and its origins in the author’s mind. Ten years ago, U.S. State Department intelligence officer Jordan Weiss’ idyllic experience as a graduate student at Cambridge was shattered when her boyfriend Jared drowned in the River Cam. She swore she’d never go back—until a terminally ill friend asks her to return. Jordan attempts to settle into her new life, taking on an urgent mission beside rakish agent Sebastian Hodges. Just when she thinks there’s hope for a fresh start, a former college classmate tells her that Jared’s death was not an accident—he was murdered. Pam Jenoff attended George Washington University, Cambridge University in the U.K., where she received a Masters in History, and

the University of Pennsylvania Law School. A former Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Army and a State Department officer, she lives in Philadelphia, where she works as an attorney. Her newest novel is A Hidden Affair.Co-sponsored by The Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Phoenix

Wednesday, November 10 | 7 pm Dr. Erica Brown Confronting Scandal: How Jews Can Respond When Jews Do Bad ThingsMadoff. Spitzer. Abramoff. This is the first time in Jewish history that a former prime minister and a president of Israel have been convicted of crime. Why are so many high-profile Jews in the media for all the wrong reasons? Why do we feel so uncomfortable about wrongdoings we never committed? Confronting Scandal looks back in Jewish history and forward in time to think about how we manage shame by association, how we air dirty laundry and how we return to a higher purpose using Jewish texts, contemporary psychology and philosophy and old-fashioned common sense.Dr. Erica Brown is a Jewish educator and writer, winner of the Avi Chai Award and the 2009 Covenant Award for her innovative work in Jewish education. She was a Jerusalem Fellow, is a faculty member of the Wexner Foundation, is

the author of Inspired Jewish Leadership and works extensively with Jewish Federations and Jewish institutions across the country producing leadership and value workshops. This event is sponsored by the Ted Barkin Family Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation.

Winter Special Event | Monday, February 7, 2011 | 7 pmKevin Salwen The Power of Half: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back It all started when fourteen-year-old Hannah Salwen had a “eureka” moment. Seeing a homeless man in her neighborhood at the same instant she spotted a man driving a glistening Mercedes, she said, “Dad, if that man had a car less nice, that man there could have a meal.” This book is the story of one family’s life-altering decision and its unexpected results. As a family, they made the extraordinary decision to sell their Atlanta mansion, buy a house half its size and give half of the sale price to a worthy charity. At first it seemed outlandish “What, are we crazy?” Then it became a challenge “We are totally doing this.” As Kevin Salwen says, “No one else is nuts enough to sell their house,” but what his family discovered along the way will

inspire countless others, no matter what their means or resources are. Warm, funny, and deeply moving, The Power of Half is the story of how one family grew closer as they discovered that half could be so much more. Sponsored by B’nai Tzedek and B’nai B’rith Youth Organization
