FEATURE AREAS

Village of Lake Hallie715-726-2660 • www.chippewacounty.comThe village of Lake Hallie, County Highway OO and State Highway 53, began in Wisconsin’s logging era. In the 1870s, the community of Badger Mills formed adjacent to the Chippewa River and Lake Hallie. Lake Hallie, an oxbow of the Chippewa River, was named after the daughter of the lumber mill president. The lake was used as a holding pond for logs. When the logging boom ended, the lake became a recreational center. Today, Lake Hallie provides excellent fishing throughout the year.

Anglers and canoeists can enjoy a leisurely float down the Chippewa River from Chippewa Falls to the boat ramp across from Lake Hallie. An 18-hole golf course lies on the shore of Lake Hallie and the banks of the Chippewa River. Hallie Youth Days provides opportunities for young softball and baseball players to display their talents. In the near future, a bike trail will provide a connection to the Old Abe and Chippewa River Bike Trails.

Blue Diamond Vacation Area“Four seasons of fun” in northern Chippewa County. The Blue Diamond Vacation Area is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Crystal-clear lakes, acres of public forest, and miles of rivers and streams await the visitor. Hiking trails, snowshoe trails, cross-country ski trails, and snowmobile trails are available. Resorts, campgrounds, and restaurants are all found in this scenic region of Chippewa County. Visit for a day, weekend, a week, or longer and you will keep returning.

For more information, call 800-221-6211 or 715-967-2020 or visit www.bluediamondarea.org.

Orchard AreaWhether you’re visiting in the spring, summer, or fall, don’t miss the beautiful orchard district in southern Chippewa County. Approximately 4 square miles of rolling hills come alive with apple blossoms in the spring, wine in the summer, and of course, apples in the fall. Seven apple orchards make up this area 8 miles east of Chippewa Falls. Each orchard offers something unique to travelers from near and far. Fresh apple pies, cider doughnuts, gift shops, wine, and fresh-pressed cider are among the treasures to be found.

Orchards are open seasonally. Reference pages 8–9 for more information.

Yellowstone TrailThe Yellowstone Trail was the first transcontinental automobile highway in the United States. In 1912 it began as an effort to provide good roads from South Dakota to the great tourist attraction, Yellowstone Park. It soon expanded to become a road running through all of the 13 northern-tier states, “from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound.” The trail was marked by bright yellow markers with a black arrow. Today, thanks to the efforts of Chippewa County and the Chippewa County Historical Society, the same Yellowstone Trail logo signs point the way through Chippewa County.

For more information on the Yellowstone Trail, visit www.yellowstonetrail.org.

Chippewa County has 449 lakes totaling 20,027 acres and ranging from 1 to 6,300 acres. Lake Wissota, the largest lake, is an impoundment of the Chippewa River east of Chippewa Falls. Although many of the smaller lakes do not support much of a fishery, they offer solitude and serenity for those wanting to get away. Thirty-eight lakes have developed public access and most are listed in the table on the opposite page. Many lakes provide excellent angling opportunities. The Chippewa River and its flowages offer some of the best and most diverse angling opportunities in the county.

Chippewa County also provides 81 miles of trout fishing opportunities in 24 classified trout streams. Seventy-seven miles of these streams are Class 1 trout water. No trout stocking is done in these streams, since most support adequate natural reproduction.

Trailhead for the Old Abe Multi-Use Trail

Cornell, Wis., is a historic paper-mill town which hosts the only known pulpwood stacker in the world. It was

used in Cornell from 1912 until 1972. It now stands as a monument to the logging industry that laid the foundation for the entire Chippewa Valley. The Cornell Visitors’ Center, located under the stacker in the Mill Yard Park, displays many artifacts from the logging era. Next door you can visit the Native American Museum with more artifacts and history.

The Old Abe Multi-Use Trail connects Brunet Island State Park with Lake Wissota State Park in Chippewa Falls.

The trail provides a variety of uses including biking, snow-mobiling, rollerblading and hiking.
