LETTER FROM DAN RADAKOVICH

Dear Yellow Jacket Fans:I know you are all as excited as I am for the beginning of the 2010 Georgia Tech Football

season as we defend our ACC Championship. All of us have worked extremely hard in the past year to present a product, both on the field and off, that will instill great pride in our fans and alumni. I could not be more proud of what Coach Paul Johnson and his staff have brought to our program. Paul has produced 20 victories in his first two seasons and back-to-back ACC Coach of the Year Awards.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and encouragement of our coaches, staff and student-athletes. We all continue to be very proud of the young men who will represent us this fall. What a special place Georgia Tech represents. It is a place where world class academics co-exist with high-quality college football. We invite you all to be a part of this storied program and take it all in while enjoying this most unique and historic setting.

I would also like to make you aware of a new sportsmanship initiative we have established this season called The Gold Standard. This is a campus wide effort to raise awareness of sports-manship at all of our Georgia Tech events. You’ll see the Gold Standard logo quite often in the coming months as we want to keep this campaign front and center with our fans. We want you to have the best time possible at Bobby Dodd Stadium, while providing you a safe, healthy and respectful game day environment. We have created an online pledge form where you and your fellow Yellow Jacket fans can sign your name and help assure a positive and fun atmosphere. Our website is www.RamblinWreck.com/GoldStandard.

This fan guide is designed to make your participation in our home games at Bobby Dodd Stadium and Grant Field more pleasurable. We hope you’ll take the time to read through the material and become familiar with all of the services we provide, logistics that you will require and policies that are in place for the season ahead.

It is my hope that 2010 will be another memorable season for us at Georgia Tech and that your experience will be enjoyable in every way. Our staff and I stand ready to assist you in every way. We want you to feel good about your Georgia Tech experience and most of all feel the urge to come back over and over again.

Sincerely,

Dan RadakovichDirector of Athletics

TECH TRADITIONS

RAMBLIN’ WRECK FIGHT SONG

WHITE & GOLD

The Georgia Tech fight song grew out of an old folk ballad, “The Sons of the Gamboliers.”

Howard D. Cutter, a member of Tech’s first graduating class (Mechanical Engineering, 1892), wrote in the November-December 1942 issue of the Georgia Tech Alumnus that the “Ramblin’ Wreck” had its origins during the first two years after Tech opened in 1888, inspired when the entire student body traveled to Athens to see Tech’s baseball team defeat Georgia.

By the early 1900s, “Ramblin’ Wreck” was an established tra-dition. The earliest existing published version of the song appeared in the Blueprint, the Institute’s yearbook, in 1908.

In 1910, Michael A. Greenblatt, Tech’s first bandmaster, discov-ered the band playing “Ramblin’ Wreck” to the tune of “Sons of the Gamboliers,” and made his first arrangement of the song in the form of a handwritten manuscript.

When Frank Roman succeeded Greenblatt as bandmaster in 1911, he wrote a new adaptation of “Ramblin’ Wreck,” accompa-nied by many trumpet flourishes, that became nationally known. His is the version that continues to be popular today.

The fame of the song spread to such proportions that in 1959 it was sung by Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev at their historic face-to-face meeting in Moscow. In 1984, the law firm of Newton, Hopkins & Ormsby investigated the copyright of “Ramblin’ Wreck” and found that a number of people have had various versions of the song copyrighted. The original version of the song is in the public domain and can be played without payment of royalties.

In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organized a football team of its own, a game was scheduled between Auburn and

Georgia. A rivalry was already established in baseball between Tech and Georgia, so Tech students were invited to the game to cheer, of course, for Auburn.

The students appointed a committee to recommend colors to be worn and cheers to be used at the game. The committee suggested white and gold, and about 200 students attended the game wearing those colors.

In 1893, when Georgia Tech’s football team played Georgia for the first time, a group of young women from the Lucy Cobb Institute for Girls attended the game to cheer for Tech, dressed in white and gold.

I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer,A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer,Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear,I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer.

Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold,And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold. But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do.He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around.I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near.I’m a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.

Oh well it’s up with the White and GoldDown with the Red and BlackGeorgia Tech is out for the victoryWe’ll drop the battle axe on Georgia’s headWhen we meet her, our team is sure to beat herDown on the old farm there will be no soundTill our bow-wows rip through the airWhen the battle is over, Georgia’s team will be found With the Yellow Jackets swarming around.

PAUL JOHNSONHEAD COACH

Paul Johnson, who helped make Georgia Tech one of college football’s biggest surprise stories of 2008 and led the Yellow Jackets to an ACC championship in 2009, enters his third season on The Flats.

In just two seasons at Georgia Tech, Johnson has compiled a record of 20-7 (.741), including a 12-4 mark in ACC play. In 13 seasons overall as a head

coach, Johnson owns a career record of 127-46 (.734). No coach in college football history won more games in their first 13 seasons as a head coach.

Johnson enjoyed success as the head coach at Georgia Southern (1997-2001) and Navy (2002-2007) before being named Georgia Tech’s 12th head coach on Dec. 12, 2007. What Johnson has accomplished at Georgia Tech has been remarkable:

• In each of his first two seasons at Tech, Johnson has been named the ACC Coach of the Year.

• He is the first coach to win the award in his first two years in the league.

• In 2008, he was named National Coach of the Year by CBS Sports.

• In 2009, the Yellow Jackets won the ACC title outright for the first time since 1990, defeat-ing Clemson in the ACC Championship Game.

• Tech played in a BCS bowl game for the first time in 2009.

• Under Johnson, Tech has averaged 10 wins per season.

• Johnson has beaten every ACC team he has faced at least once (Tech has not played Maryland or NC State since Johnson’s arrival), including a 3-0 record vs. Clemson and a 2-0 mark against Florida State.

• In each of the last two seasons Tech has ranked in the top five nationally in rushing offense.

• Tech has produced a first team All-American in each of the last two seasons -- Michael Johnson in 2008 and Derrick Morgan in 2009.

• Since Johnson’s arrival, a Tech player has been named ACC Offensive Player of the Year (Jonathan Dwyer in 2008) and ACC Defensive Player of the Year (Morgan in 2009).

• In 2009, Tech won in Tallahassee (Fla.) for the first time in school history, beat a top-five ranked team at home (Virginia Tech) for the first time since 1962 and won on the road in Charlottesville (Va.) for the first time since 1990.

• Also in 2009, Tech earned its highest national ranking (7th) since 1999.

• In 2008, the Jackets broke a seven-year losing skid to rival Georgia, beating the 13th-ranked Bulldogs, 45-42, in Athens (Ga.).

The 2009 season was one of the most memorable in Yellow Jacket history despite fielding one of the youngest rosters in

college football (just six scholarship seniors). After a mid-September loss at nationally-ranked Miami when

the Yellow Jackets played their third game in a 12-day span, Tech reeled off eight consecutive victories including a 5-0 record in October when it played four road games. A convincing 49-10 win at Duke on Nov. 14 clinched the ACC Coastal Division crown, then Tech won the league title by defeating Clemson for a second time, this time in the ACC Championship Game in Tampa, Fla.

Tech, which reached a national ranking as high as seventh, played in the FedEx Orange Bowl, its first appearance in a major or BCS bowl game since 1962. Along the way, the Yellow Jackets rolled up mind-boggling numbers on offense, ranking second nationally in rushing offense (295.4 ypg) and third in time of possession (33:49).

Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Sports Illustrated projected Georgia Tech to finish 3-9 and the ACC media picked the Yellow Jackets to finish fourth in the Coastal Division. However, Johnson directed Tech to a 9-4 record, a share of the Coastal Divi-sion title and a Chick-fil-A Bowl berth. Johnson’s first Yellow Jacket team beat three nationally-ranked opponents – Florida State, Miami and Georgia – over the final four games of the regular season. The win over Georgia snapped a seven-year losing skid to Tech’s in-state rival.

Johnson’s first season at Georgia Tech was remarkable for a number of reasons. Not only did he and his staff install completely new offensive and defensive schemes, but Johnson inherited one of the nation’s youngest rosters, which included 76 freshmen and sophomores. The last one-third of the season, 16 of Tech’s 22 start-ers were freshmen or sophomores. He also took over a program low in scholarship numbers, well below the maximum of 85, the lingering effects of distant NCAA penalties.

Johnson came to Georgia Tech after previously serving six seasons as head coach of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he led the Midshipmen to a level of success they had not seen in decades. Johnson’s first head coaching job came at Georgia Southern, where in five seasons he led the Eagles to two I-AA national championships.

Prior to Johnson’s arrival in Atlanta, he earned unprecedented success at Navy.

Johnson coached six years at Navy, where in 2007 the Midship-men won a fifth straight Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, earned a postseason bowl bid for the fifth consecutive year and beat Notre Dame for the first time since 1963. Johnson was a finalist for the 2007 Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year.

In six seasons at Navy, Johnson compiled a record of 45-29. Johnson took over a Navy football program that was coming

off the worst two-year span in its 123-year history (1-20) and had recorded just two winning seasons in the last 20 years. After a 2-10 mark in Johnson’s first year, the Midshipmen achieved what many thought was no longer possible at an Academy. Johnson brought the Midshipmen back into the national spotlight with a 43-19 (.694) record over the last four-plus years.

Johnson dominated the other two Service Academies like no

other coach in the school’s annals, posting an 11-1 (.917) overall record, including a perfect 6-0 mark against rival Army. Last year’s senior class was the first in school history to post a perfect 8-0 mark against Army and Air Force.

Before arriving at Annapolis, Johnson served as head coach at Georgia Southern from 1997 to 2001. At Georgia Southern, Johnson posted a 62-10 (.861) record, won two straight I-AA National Championships (1999 and 2000), five consecutive Southern Conference Championships and was named the Division I-AA National Coach of the Year four straight years (1997-2000).

In five seasons at Georgia Southern, Johnson’s squads broke or tied 379 individual and team school, conference, playoff or sta-dium records, ranked in the top 10 in 21 statistical categories and produced 31 All-Americans. The Eagles won an NCAA I-AA-record 39 consecutive games at home. Meanwhile, their 52 wins over those four seasons were the most in all of Division I.

Johnson was previously Navy’s offensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996 and his spread offense made an immediate impact, breaking five school records during the Mids’ five-win season in 1995.

Navy posted a 9-3 record the next season in 1996, including a 42-38 victory over California in the Aloha Bowl. It was Navy’s first winning season since 1982 and one of only two winning seasons the Mids had during a 19-year span. Prior to joining the Navy staff, Johnson spent eight seasons as the offensive coordinator at the University of Hawai’i (1987-94). He helped guide the Rainbows to their first Western Athletic Conference title and their first bowl appearance, coordinating an explosive offense that broke or equaled more than 160 school records.

While at Hawai’i, Johnson developed a successful offensive unit which earned top-20 I-A statistical rankings in scoring offense, total offense and rushing offense during six of his eight seasons. He earned top offensive coach honors in the WAC and was named one of the top 10 assistant coaches in the country by The Sporting News.

After first arriving at Georgia Southern in 1983 as defensive line coach, Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1985. Under his tutelage, record-setting quarterback Tracy Ham and the Eagle offense re-wrote the school record book while averaging 435 total yards and 36 points per contest.

Georgia Southern rolled to a combined 26-4 record and captured a pair of I-AA titles in 1985-86.

Johnson’s coaching career began when he was offensive coordinator and line coach at his alma mater, Avery County (N.C.) High School, in 1979-80. He accepted the offensive coordina-tor’s position at Lees-McRae Junior College in 1981, leading his offensive unit to a sixth-place national standing among NJCAA total offense leaders.

Johnson, a native of Newland, N.C., earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Western Carolina in 1979 and a Master’s degree in health and physical education from Appalachian State in 1982. He and wife, Susan, are the parents of a daughter, Kaitlyn.
