Brian HullHead Coach Brian Hull begins his third year as the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach. Hull, a native of Eureka Springs, Ark., was the as-sistant men’s and women’s cross country coach

at Ozarks from 2001-2003. Hull has quickly transformed the men’s and women’s cross country teams into competitive regional pro-grams. His men’s team had three top-5 finishes during the 2009 season, including a second-place finish at the Lyon College Invitational. Additionally, the 2009 men’s team finished fourth at the ASC Championships. He had four runners compete at the NCAA III regionals in North Carolina, with one of his runners earning USTFCCCA All-Region Team honors there. Two of his men’s runners were named to the ASC All-Conference Team and he had a combined six runners earn ASC All-Academic Team status. Hull coached the men’s ASC Freshman of the Year in 2008. Hull’s success at Ozarks began as a student - he was a four-year cross country letterman at Ozarks and was named All-Conference in 1997. He was American Southwest Conference Runner of the Week twice during his career. He graduated from Ozarks in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He earned his master’s degree in college student personnel from Arkansas Tech University in 2007. He and his wife, Elizabeth, and the parents of Kaden and Evan.

Men’s and women’s head coach Brian Hull has high expectations for his cross country teams this season. Hull expressed his excitement for the veteran status of several runners and plans to use that to the team’s advantage in the upcoming season. He expects his upperclassmen to take on a leadership role and work with the four men and two women that joined the program to help Ozarks improve and continue develop-ment within the program. The experience of the older runners combined with the excite-ment of the younger runners is expected to create promising results. While the older runners continue to work hard and improve, Hull states “the incoming class can have an opportunity to have a pretty solid impact right away for the men and women.” On the men’s side, junior David James earned First Team All-Conference and junior Tristan

Cooper earned Second Team All-Conference last season. James also picked up a Runner of the Week title last season. Cooper had the team’s top 8K time last season, running a 28:02 at the Rhodes College Invitational. “We hope to continue

to have that conference recognition with a runner of the week title or through a First or Second Team All-Conference runner,” said Hull. Hull reveals that the women’s team has some high impact runners that will help the program receive more recognition. The last few years both teams have went to the NCAA III South/Southeast Regional and received some high recognition. Two years ago the Eagles sent three men and last year they sent the same three men along with one woman to the meet. Junior Tadera Garland, who posted the team’s top 5K time with a 23:57, was the first female runner in program history since U of O joined the ASC to repre-sent the women’s team. James, Cooper, and Jer-emy Provence represent-ed Ozarks in the regional meet the previous two years. The men showed immense improvement on the national stage last year from their first experi-ence. James placed in the top 35 runners at the meet, qualifying him for the All-Region Team.

American Southwest ConferenceAmerican Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 15th championship season of competition with the 2010-2011 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2009-2010 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
