    SPECIES OF WOOD

There are as many types of wood as there are types of trees, each with characteristic

grain, hardness and color. Here's a short list of the most common types of wood used for

    passage doors and cabinets.

    Red Oak

The open-grain texture of Oak adds to its prominent appearance. It varies in color,

ranging from a light pinkish tan to a light brown, with occasional greenish hues. Oak

machines well and is generally receptive to a variety of stains and finishes. It is a time-tested hardwood known for its durability and versatility.

    White Oak

White oak is similar in color and appearance to European Oak. The sapwood of

American white oak is light colored and the heartwood is light to dark brown .White oak

is mostly straight grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak

White oak has therefore more figure. White oak is often used in quarter sawn which

gives it the typical mirrors in the surface.

    Maple

It is an exceptionally hard wood specie with closed pores. These characteristics make it

less receptive to stain than many other species. It is common for this specie to exhibit a

mottled or blotchy look when stained with mid to darker tone stains. Maples general

coloration ranges from a yellowish-white to a light tan shade. Mineral streaks are

common in Maple and turn darker when stained. The size and frequency of mineral

streaks will vary. Maple is generally responsive to light and its overall color will change

(usually towards a light yellow shade) over time.

    Cherry

Cherry is an exceptionally elegant hardwood, defined by soft grain patterns and rich

tonality. In its natural state the specie may exhibit deep reddish-brown heartwood, whilehaving areas that are slightly yellowish, pink, or even gray. These variations will be morevisible in product finished in lighter colors. Cherry will display some of the followingnatural marks pin knots, sap wood, mineral streaks, and pitch pockets/gum spots. Thesefacets are a vital part of what gives Cherry its beautiful appearance. It is important to notethat Cherry can react quite actively to light and will generally darken and redden over time. The natural tendency of this specie to redden can result in a surprising changing of coloration in material pigmented with lighter-tone stains.

    Poplar

A workhorse species for cabinetmakers and patternmakers, fairly weather-resistant andconsistent in grain and texture, making it easy to shape and work. A good surface for stain and paint. Medium hardness and toughness.

    Western Maple

Also known as Big Leaf Maple is known for its figured, three dimensionalgrain. Similar in look and hardness to Cherry. It has a natural look with tight knots,

checks and some darker chocolate brown wood.

    Knotty Alder

Knotty alder has the strength of maple and the personality of pine. The wood is light brown in color with yellow and peach hues. Stains can further highlight the beautifulgrain. The open, solid knots gives alder a more informal presence.

    Ash

American Ash is similar in appearance to European Ash . The sapwood is light coloredto nearly white and the heartwood varies from grayish to light brown, to pale yellowstreaked with brown. The wood is generally straight grained with a coarse uniformtexture. Ash is a strong and durable species and very suitable for doors

    Walnut

Walnut is an exceptionally beautiful and stable hardwood whose traits are stronglydefined throughout the history of woodworking. Grain patterns range from straight to

varied; providing striking depth when finished in natural to lighter tones. This species

native coloration fluctuates from dark brown to a purplish black. Occasionally, portions

of the wood may exhibit light brown streaks. As a naturally dark wood specie, Walnut

responds in a more subdued manner to most stain colors, though its inherent cellular

characteristics make it very receptive to most pigments.

    African Mahogany

African Mahogany heartwood ranges from ligth to deep reddish-brown in collor . The

grain is straigth to interlocked. Its texture is medium to coarse. The wood stains and

polishes to an exellent finish . The wood is moderatly resistant.

    Sapele

Sapele is a reddish-brown wood that in many ways is very similar to Mahogany. A

remarkable feature of sapele is that the grain is interlocked and changes direction in

frequent, irregular intervals. Before WWI the principal demand for this wood came from

Germany where it was used for decorative cabinet work. Interestingly enough, sapele was

found in the propeller-blades of German Zeppelins. Sapele is also one of Europe's most

desired woods in manufacturing doors, windows and hardwood flooring. It has a wide

variety of applications and is very popular as a decorative surface veneer for high-grade

furniture such as book cases and cabinets. It is a great alternative to genuine Mahogany .

As a standard, we use a stile and rail width of 2.25. However we are not limited to this.If you would like smaller or larger stiles and rails, please specify this on your order. Dueto structure, as a standard -everything over 40 in height or in width will require a midrail or stile. As a standard, we will center this in the door. Please specify in your order if you require it elsewhere, or if you would like mid rails or stiles in doors under 40.

Below, please choose your choice of style for your drawer fronts.

All 5-piece drawers (other than mitred) smaller than 6 in height, will have 1.5 rails toallow for enough revel of the panel. For drawers with raised panels, if the reveal is lessthan 0.5, we use a solid flat panel. We always make drawers with horizontal grain unlessspecified in your order.

    GRAIN MATCHING, GLASS and HARDWARE

We offer grain matching on our doors as shown to theright . Grain matching affects create a very custom look -from alignment of the vertical stiles and panels in five

piece wood doors to balanced grain patterns on centralfocus point doors.

With all cabinet doors and passage doors, we refer your glass choices to www.fusionglass.com . We have samplesof the most common glass choices in our office.

    WARRANTY

The warranty is intended to reduce or eliminate for the customer, some risks related towooden doors. Wood expands differentially with moisture changes, causing changes in

door shape. Extreme changes can break the door. Lesser changes appear as warp or improper fit. Properly constructed doors will not fail and will minimize warp. Toachieve this, a door must be hung in place, sealed (coated) and if immediate installation isnot possible, properly stored.

UWPIs warranty (the Warranty) covers everything that UWPI can control about thedoor such as materials, structure and joinery, fasteners, seals, adhesives, sizing tospecification and if provided, fit, workability of moving parts, hardware and fittings, glass and glazing.

The warranty is provided for two years and is limited to correction of flaws and faults by

whatever means is deemed by UWPI to be the most effective and efficient to restoreappearance and function to the door or door unit. UWPI is prepared to advise customerson storage, installation, protection and finishing standards.

The Warranty will be adjusted or voided where damage is related to abuse, neglect, lossor damage normally insurable and related to severe weather, fire, burglary and the like, or where the following conditions exist. Any wooden door exposed to extreme humiditydifferential, from one side to the other will likely cause warping, possibly seriously.Phone: 403-652-1955 Fax: 403-652-1977 Email: [email protected]

Doors that are exposed to these circumstances must be hung, properly finished andnormally closed during extreme differentials of temperature and humidity. A door thatfaces driving wind and precipitation will be damaged unless properly coated, possiblysheltered and it may even need a storm door. Some colors attract solar heat and UV rays.An unprotected door must not be finished in a color that causes high heat build-up.

Although UWPI will assist a customer with concerns about a door at any time during thewarranty period, it will not do so under warranty where the problems have been caused

by neglect, abuse by anyone or failure to follow good practices in finish, installation or storage.

UWPI will respond to customer complaints and concerns promptly and will assist withremedial action wherever possible whether or not UWPI is responsible for thedeterioration or damage under The Warranty.
