Hon. Ronald K. MachtleyBryant University President U

nder the leadership of President Ronald K.Machtley, Bryant University has evolved intoone of the most progressive and leading in-

stitutions of higher learning in New England.

Hardly a president who remains behind thescenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics,Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete inhis own right — has been an ardent supporter ofBulldog sports since becoming the University’sseventh president in 1996.

Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence”initiated the most significant enhancements to theBryant campus and community since the univer-sity’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no ex-ception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams withthe addition of football, field hockey, men’s andwomen’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s andwomen’s swimming.

The addition of the new varsity programs broughtabout an overhaul of the university’s athletics fa-cilities as well. These renovations are highlightedby the construction of Bulldog Stadium, whichserves as the home of the Bryant football, soccerand lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-artfields for baseball, softball and field hockey.Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired andsupported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitnesscenter that is second to none.

Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in Juneof 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one ofRhode Island’s leading public servants. He served

as a member of the United States House of Rep-resentatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a mem-ber of the House Armed Services Committee. Hewas also the ranking Republican on the Small Busi-ness Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance andUrban Development Subcommittee and co-founder of the first House Working Group on Men-tal Health. As a reflection of the esteem in whichhis congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Macht-ley was elected president of his congressional classduring each of his terms in the House.

Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr.Machtley served as a partner in the internationaltelecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker,Knauer & Quinn in Washington,•D.C. He is admit-ted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachu-setts and Florida.

President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of theUnited States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Heearned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in1978 and served on active duty in the UnitedStates Navy. Mr. Machtley also completed 25 yearsof service as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the board of visitors of theUnited States Naval Academy from 1992 to 1995and currently serves on the boards of several cor-porations, as well as on the boards of many civicand charitable organizations.

President Machtley and his wife, Kati, have twochildren and reside on the Bryant campus withtheir two dogs, Sandy and Paddington. Their son,Todd, is an undergraduate at Muhlenberg College.Their daughter, Erin, graduated from Villanova Uni-versity in 1998.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW

8 2010 Bryant University Baseball

After a successful 2009 season – their first at theDivision I level – the Bryant University BaseballTeam is looking to follow up a 32 win season withanother strong campaign, and firmly establishthemselves as one of the premier Division I teamsin the Northeast.

For the first time, the Bulldogs’ 2010 schedulefeatures a full slate of Northeast Conference (NEC)games. Outside the conference, Bryant’s regionalopponents will include Boston College, UCONN,URI and Northeastern, among others. The Bull-dogs will also travel outside the region to play aschedule highlighted by Virginia Tech and West Vir-

ginia. Here is a look at the 2010 Bulldogs as they pre-

pare for the upcoming season.

Pitching StaffThe Bulldog pitching staff will be anchored by

2009 First Team All-New England and All-Indepen-dent Pitcher of the Year, senior tri-captain EricPolvani (Wallingford, Conn). Polvani (8-2, 2.04ERA in 2009) hopes to cap off a successful careerwith one more strong season on the mound. Inthe program’s history, Polvani currently ranks 11thall time in Wins, 2nd in career ERA, 2nd in appear-ances, and 3rd in saves.

Returning to the rotation in 2010 after missingthe entire 2009 season with an injury is DavidO’Brien (Whitman, Mass). O’Brien was spectacu-lar as a freshman in 2007, posting a 7-1 record andan ERA of 2.27.

Junior right-hander John Michael Ryan (Worces-ter, Mass.) will also be a key starter for the Bull-dogs. Ryan (3-4, 3.94) evolved into a reliable armin 2009, and will bring his strong fastball and excel-lent off-speed pitches into the rotation.

The bullpen will be anchored by junior Mark An-drews (Hillsborough, NJ). The left-handerrecorded 10 saves in 2009 and posted an ERA of

4.38. This season he will again be counted on asthe team’s closer.

Bullpen depth will be key for the Bulldogs. Sen-ior Nick Laude (Wells, Maine), junior Matt Gris-wold (Berlin, Conn.), and sophomore Brian O’Neil(North Reading, Mass.) combined for 45 appear-ances last year in the later innings, and all threewill be used in a similar capacity this year.

Several other pitchers will be used in a variety ofroles. Senior Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.)has been used as both a starter and a relieverthroughout his career, and his versatility will make

him valuable this season. Senior Tom Baker (WestBrookfield, Mass.), juniors Dan Walsh (Burlington,Mass.) and Sean McNiff (Andover, Mass.) andsophomore Ross Fino (Ashland, Mass.) will becompeting for time on the hill.

The staff also features three freshmen who arein line to contribute right away. Right-handers SalLisanti (Bronx, NY) and Joe Michaud (Milford,Conn.), along with southpaw Tim Bessette (Water-bury, Conn.) all pitched well in the fall and will allhave the chance to help the team on the mound.Freshman righty Kyle Leonard (North Merrick, NY)is a two-way player who has continued to improveas a pitcher.

CatcherSenior Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) enters

his fourth season as the Bulldogs’ starting catcher.A 2009 Second Team All-New England selection,Vigurs (.389 BA, 9 HR, 70 RBI) will bring a veteranpresence both behind the plate and in the middleof the lineup in his second season as one of theteam’s captains.

Vigurs will be backed up by freshman RyanGranat (Long Valley, NJ), who proved to be a solidbackstop in the fall season. Junior Scott Merritt(Norwalk, Conn.) gained experience behind the

dish in the fall, and will provide depth at the posi-tion.

InfieldThe Bulldog infield is led by senior tri-captain DylanStone (Portsmouth, RI). The second basemanstarted every game in 2009, and he provides a ver-satile bat near the top of the lineup that will givethe middle of the order plenty of RBI opportuni-ties.

Sophomore Jamie Skagerlind (Holden, Mass.)returns as the starting first baseman after a solidfreshman season (6 HR, 31 RBI). His .993 fieldingpercentage (3 errors in 452 chances) in 2009 ranks7th all time in Bryant history.

Returning at third base is junior Tim Norton(Barnstable, Mass). Norton was the Bulldogs’ pri-mary third baseman in 2009, and he showed in thefall that he is ready to step up as one of the team’sleaders.

With the graduation of Pat McKenna, who wasdrafted by the Detroit Tigers, the Bulldogs are look-ing to replace a four year starter at shortstop. Mul-tiple newcomers showed in the fall that they arecapable of filling that void, and the competitionhas provided the team with tremendous depth inthe infield.

Sophomore David Soltis (Plainville, Conn.), atransfer from the University of Vermont, had animpressive fall season and will be an importantpart of the lineup this spring. Another transfer, junior Macky Cianciolo (Prospect, Conn.), brings aconsistent approach at the plate and can play any-where in the infield.

Freshman Dan Muscatello (Hopkinton, Mass.) isa sure-handed defender who also runs well. Heprovides a versatile option late in games both de-fensively and on the bases. Junior Colin Dougherty(Lowell, Mass.), sophomore Dan Mello (Peabody,Mass.), and freshmen Pete Kelich (Jackson, N.J.)and Adam Claire (Litchfield, Conn.) will provide ad-ditional support at all four infield positions.

OutfieldBryant’s all time hits leader, senior Nick Camp-

bell (Raynham, Mass.), returns as the starter incenterfield. Campbell (.375, 42 RBI, 50 runs) is anexceptional hitter who also provides top notch de-fense in the outfield. Through his first three sea-sons, Campbell ranks 8th or better in six differentcategories in the Bulldogs’ career record book.

Junior Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.)will once again start in right field for the Bulldogs.English will bring a strong arm and reliable bat tothe everyday lineup.

Sophomore Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.)and freshman Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.)both had strong fall seasons, and will both see timein the outfield this spring. Brown also has experi-ence in the infield, and will provide more depththere as well. Merritt and sophomore MikeDelPonte (Tewksbury, Mass.) have outfield experi-ence, and both have proven to be strong, danger-ous hitters – making them natural options for thedesignated hitter spot.

The 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year, Bryant University headcoach Jamie Pinzino enters his fifth season at the helm of the Bulldog baseballprogram. After 3 seasons at the DII level, Bryant Baseball made the leap to DI in

2009, and proved they belonged in their first season. The Bulldogs finished 2009 withan impressive 32-22 record, for a .593 winnings percentage, second behind Florida GulfCoast for tops among reclassifying teams.

The Bulldogs made some noise early in the 2009 season, finishing with a 9-2 recordon their spring trip, including a win over Virginia Tech, and series wins over Richmondand James Madison. The northern schedule opened with the Bulldogs playing theirfirst DI home game at the Bulldog Baseball Complex on March 15, taking home a 7-5victory over Boston College. They continued their solid play up north, earning 14-7record against New England opponents, a 6-2 mark against future Northeast Confer-ence foes, and earning wins over some of the region's top DI teams, such as Maine,

URI, and Northeastern. The Bulldogs found themselves

ranked in various polls throughoutthe year, ending with a #4 rankingin the Ping!Baseball NortheastPoll, and a #5 ranking the NEIBAcoaches poll. The postseasonawards were numerous for theBulldogs, with six players namedto the All-Independent team (EricPolvani, Jeff Vigurs, Mark Andrewson the first team), and Polvaniearning Pitcher of the Year honorsamong Independents. Four play-ers were selected to the All-NewEngland NEIBA squad, withPolvani on the first team, and Vig-urs, Kevin Cobb, and Nick Camp-bell to the 2nd team. PatMcKenna also capped off a terrificcareer by being drafted by the De-troit Tigers in the 27th round ofthe MLB draft. The 32 wins in2009 gave the Bulldogs 110 winsover the last three season, whichbreaks the mark of 99 wins set be-tween 2002-04.

In 2008, the program’s finalyear in Division II, Pinzino and his club set the school record for wins, finishing with a 43-21 record, winning the NE-10 regular season title, and making their second straight ap-pearance in the NCAA Northeast Regional Finals. In the final national polls, Bryant wasranked #25 in the Ping poll and #27 by Collegiate Baseball. Bryant opened some eyesacross the country early in the 2008 season with a couple key victories on their springbreak trip, including wins over #1 ranked and eventual National Champion Mount Olive(NC), who owned a 23-game win streak, and #6 West Chester (PA), who had won theirfirst 16 games of the season. The Bulldogs went on to a 25-5 conference record in theNE-10, winning 16 of their last 17 conference games, and clinching the conference titlethe last weekend of the season with a 3-0, 1-0 doubleheader sweep at Pace. The key toBryant's success in conference play was their depth and consistency in all areas of the

game. The Bulldogs ended league play second in hitting (.303 batting average), first inteam ERA (1.55), and first in defense (.973 fielding percentage). Bryant was selected totheir second consecutive NCAA appearance (6th overall) as the #2 seed in the region. After a loss to Dowling, the Bulldogs rattled off wins over CW Post, Dowling, and Cald-well, to setup a rematch of the 2007 Regional Final with Franklin Pierce. After a 12-10victory in game 1, Pierce defeated Bryant in the nightcap, ending the Bulldogs season, one game shy of the World Series. At the end of the year, Bryant also found themselvesranked in the country in several statistical categories.

The Bulldogs led the country in fewest walks allowed (2.55/game) and sacrifice bunts(78). The team also finished 8th in fielding percentage (.970) and 6th in double plays(61). Several Bulldogs were honored with post-season awards, including Eric Loh, NickCampbell, and Jason Alexander, who were all selected 1st team all-conference.

In 2007, the Bulldogs and Pinzino righted the ship in his second year, posting a 35-24record (21-9 in conference). Picked to finish sixth overall in the Northeast-10 Confer-ence Preseason Coaches' Poll in 2007, third in the league standings. But the postseasonwas even more fruitful. After upsetting top-seeded Franklin Pierce and second-seededUMass-Lowell en route to a second-place finish in the conference tournament, the Bull-dogs continued to roll in NCAA Northeast Regional, winning three games to finish sec-ond and falling just two wins shy of a trip to the College World Series. After the season, the Bulldogs took home their share of conference honors, with Junior Eric Loh (3rdteam All-American) named NE-10 Pitcher of the Year, Jeff Vigurs named Freshman ofthe Year, and Pinzino taking home NE-10 Coach of the Year honors. The Bulldogs fin-ished 5th in the country in ERA (2.79) and 3rd in double plays (65).

In their first season together, 2006, Pinzino and the Bulldogs suffered through arough start to the year, finishing with a disappointing 18-33 record. But despite theearly struggles, they fought their way to a fifth-place finish in the Northeast-10 Confer-ence with a 16-14 league record. Bryant dropped its first-round conference tournamentgame, 1-0, to eventual tournament champion UMass-Lowell.

After four season, Pinzino's record at Bryant now stands at 128-100 (.561), for an av-erage of 32 wins per season. During the three years at the DII level, this included a 62-28 (.689) NE-10 Conference record, qualifying for the post-season all three years, andgathered 10 playoff victories (including 7 in the NCAA Regionals). In those three sea-sons, the Bulldogs placed 19 players on All-conference teams, including four 1st teamplayers, a Pitcher of the Year (Eric Loh), and a Freshman of the Year (Jeff Vigurs).

Prior to arriving in Smithfield, Pinzino spent one season at Assumption College in2005, guiding the Greyhounds to an 11-28 record and 10-18 mark in the Northeast-10.Pinzino was an assistant coach at Tufts, his alma mater, for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, under head coach John Casey. Pinzino also held assistant coaching positions at HolyCross (2002), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont, CA. (1998), Westboro American Le-gion (1997-98), St. John's High School (1999-2001) and was the head coach of theNorthboro American Legion Program (1999-2004).

A four-year varsity member of the Tufts baseball team, Pinzino helped lead the Jum-bos to a berth, as the #2 seed, in the 1995 NCAA Division III Regional and was a mem-ber of three ECAC Championship teams, in 1994, 1996 and 1997.

A 1993 graduate of St. John's High School (Shrewsbury, MA.), Pinzino earned the Pio-neer Award during his senior season, helping lead the Pioneers to the MassachusettsState Finals.

Pinzino graduated from Tufts University in Medford, MA. in 1998 with a degree inhistory. While back at his alma mater during his coaching days, he also earned a Mas-ters Degree in Educational Studies.
