The WU Tennis Courts -- Home of Bearcat Tennis: Willamette University hosts men’sand women’s tennis matches at the Willamette University Tennis Courts each season. Thereare six courts, plus seating for fans.

TheBearcatmen’sandwomen’stennisteamsplayhomematches at theWillametteUniversityTennis Courts located on campus. The facilityincludessixcourtsdividedbyseatingforfansinthe center and created on two elevations.WU’ssplit-level facility creates a special atmosphere,enhanced by trees and bushes surrounding thecourts.Whenever theWUTennis Courts aren’tavailable due to the weather the tennis teamspracticeandplayattheCourthouseTennisClub. JohnLewisField is thehomeof WillametteBearcat baseball. The field is located at Roy S.“Spec” Keene Stadium at Bush’s Pasture Park.The stadium features chairback seating in partof thegrandstand.Overallcapacityis1,000. Willamette’sfootballteamplayshomegamesatMcCulloch Stadium located near John LewisField. The football stadium is two blocks fromcampusandfeaturesalargevideodisplayboard.The stadium seats 2,400, has lights for nightgames, and includes an athletic training roomthatallowsathletestoreceiveon-sitetreatment. McCulloch Stadium has a FieldTurf playingsurface, along with spacious locker rooms and

meeting rooms. It provides the atmosphere ofanoldstadium,butwithmodernconveniences. The Charles Bowles Track, located insideMcCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facilitythat showcasesWillamette’s track and field andcrosscountryteams,whohostmeetseachyear. Theentire football, track, cross country andbaseball complex is atBush’sPasturePark.Theparkhostscrosscountrymeetsonitswidepathsandisknownforitsartexhibitsandrosegarden. ConeFieldHouseisthehomecourtfortheWillamettemen’s basketball, women’s basketballandvolleyballteams.Thearenaholds2,500fans,

withplentyof seatingoneachsideof thecourt.There is a sound system, along with tables forscorekeepers,statisticiansandbroadcastmedia. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J.Sparks Center, which houses offices for theDepartment of Athletics and the Departmentof ExerciseScience.Thebuildinghasbasketball,handball and racquetball courts, aweight liftingandfitnesscenter,classroomsandlockerrooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is theWU Natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming.

The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, alsocanbeseenfromaviewingareainthelobby. TheWillametteUniversitysoccer teamsplayhome games at Sparks Field, an artificial turffacility next to the Sparks Center. The field isequipped with lights for night games and seats500 spectators. The facility is one of the topcollegefieldsintheNorthwest. Membersof themen’s andwomen’s rowingteams hold workouts on the Willamette Riverwestof downtownSalem. Ontheeastsideof campusistheWillametteSoftball Field. It includes covered dugouts,battingcages,ascoreboardandbleachers. The Bearcatmen’s andwomen’s golf teamspracticeatIllaheHillsCountryClub.Willamette’sgolf teams also host tournaments each year atareagolf courses.

Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of WillametteUniversityinJuly,1999.UnderPelton’sleadership,theUniversityhasincreaseditsacademicprofile,successfullyemployingstrategiestoattractthebestfacultyand the brightest students from the state, the nation and the world. Since2001,WillametteUniversityhasbeen ranked a top tier liberal arts collegebyU.S. News and World Report.PresidentPeltonholdsadoctorate fromHarvardUniversity and an undergraduate degree in English and psychology fromWichita StateUniversity, where he graduatedmagna cum laude in 1974.Hisarea of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry.He served

asdeanof thecollegeatColgateUniversity (1988-91)andDartmouthCollege(1991-98).AtHarvard,hetaught in theEnglishDepartment andwas thedeanof oneof Harvard’s 13undergraduate colleges.HeteachesatWillametteinsubjectsrangingfrom1stcenturyAthenstopost-apartheidSouthAfrica.

MarkMajeski beganhis tenurewithWillametteUniversity inOctober of 2000 following five years as athletic director at the University of California,SantaCruz and four years as assistant athletic director atMenloCollege.Hecurrently serves as the chairman of the NCAA Division III membershipcommittee,whichprovidesoversightof theDivision IIIprovisionalmemberprogram.Majeski previously served on theNCAADivision IIImen’s tenniscommittee,overseeingchampionshipsinthatsport.Aformerbasketball,trackand softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operationsfor the 1994 FIFAMen’s SoccerWorld Cup and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic

Games.AtWU,Majeski oversees 20 varsity teams,with theBearcats competing inNCAADivision III,the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He also is the basketball liaisonbetweentheNWCcoachesandathleticdirectors.Majeskireceivedanundergraduatedegree in journalismfrom Menlo College and a master’s degree in higher education administration from San Jose StateUniversity.HelivesinSalemwithhiswife,Denise,andtheirson,JackHenry,age5.

Assistant CoachKasia Carr (1st year) Kasia Carr isinherfirstseasonhelping coach thewomen’s tennisteam atWU. Sheassists the teamduring practicesand at matchesduring the year.She spends muchofhercoachingtimeworkingindividuallywithWillamette’splayers. Carr works and teaches tennis at theCourthouse Tennis Club in Salem. Herduties include coordinating leagues anddirecting the Junior Tennis program. Shealso taught for two years at TennisWestRacquetClub inElPaso,Texas.ShewasanNCAADivision I tennis player at theUniversityofTexasatElPaso.Sheearneda bachelor’s degree inMediaAdvertisingwithaminorinKinesiologyfromUTEP.

Head CoachBecky Roberts (10th year) BeckyRoberts is in her 10th season as the head coachofwomen’s tennis at Willamette University. She also coachedthemen’steamforfiveyearsfrom2001-06. In2010,RobertsledWillamettetoa12-9record,including10-6(4thplace)intheNorthwestConference,asWUqualifiedfor the NWC Tournament. Natalia Agarycheva was 20-3 insinglesafterreachingtheRoundof16attheOjaiTournament. During the fall of 2009, Roberts helpedAgarycheva take

second in singles at theWilson/ITA Small College Northwest Regional.AgarychevaandShannonPalmeralsofinishedsecondindoublesattheWilson/ITARegional. InRoberts’firstseasonatWUin2001,thementookfifthintheNWCTournament.In 2004, the Bearcat women placed third in theNWC. Robertswas named the 2004NWCWomen’sTennisCoachoftheYear. For 19 seasons from 1981-99, Roberts coached the men’s and women’s tennisteamsat theUniversityofTexasatSanAntonioinNCAADivisionI.ShewaschosenSouthlandConferenceCoachof theYear for thewomen’s teamin1993and1999andforthemen’steamin1994.Her1998women’steamwontheconferencechampionship. FollowinghertenureatUTSAandpriortocomingtoWillamette,RobertswastheheadtennisproattheWestinSalishanLodgeandGolfResortinGlenedenBeach,Ore. RobertsgraduatedwithhonorsfromtheUniversityofTexasatAustinin1976witha bachelor’s degree in Physical Education/Health. She achieved a master’s degree inEducation/SupervisionfromUTSAin1984.

Willamette is a member of theNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociation and competes inDivision III, which has over425members and is the largestNCAA division. The collegesin Division III place a priorityon the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successfulcompletion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment inwhich a student-athlete’s activities with anathleticteamareseenasanintegralpartof hisorhereducationalexperience.Membersin Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’ssportsandfivewomen’ssports.

Athletes in Division III donot receive financial aid relatedto athletic ability. Willametteand other NCAA Division IIImembers encourage students toparticipate by maximizing thevariety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willametteoften sends its teams to California, Idaho,WashingtonandTexasforin-regiongames. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity andgender equity among student-athletes andstaff. InDivisionIII, facultyandstaff careaboutthewell-beingof student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference Thenineprivatecollegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that formthe Northwest ConferencearebuildingareputationfortheNWCasoneof thetopNCAADivision III leaguesin the nation. TheNWC isnationally competitive in abroadspectrumof sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferencesin the western United States. The NWC’scurrentmembersinOregonareWillamette,GeorgeFox,Linfield,LewisandClark,andPacific.MemberslocatedinWashingtonarePacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, WhitmanandWhitworth. Charter members included Willamette,the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific andPuget Sound. Albany College was addedin1931,remainedforsevenyearsandthenreturnedin1949asLewis&ClarkCollege.

Pacific Lutheran joined in1965 and was followed byWhitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfromtheconferencein1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988.The Northwest Conferenceoffers championships in atotal of 18 sports, including

ninemen’ssportsandninewomen’ssports. The NWC originally sponsored athleticcompetition for men’s sports only, butjoinedforceswiththeWomen’sConferenceof Independent Colleges in 1984 to formtheNorthwestConferenceof IndependentColleges.Thenamewas shortenedback totheoriginalNorthwestConferencein1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcernforallstudent-athletes.

Bearcats Finish 12-9 Overall, 10-6 in the Northwest Conference Willamette University finished the 2010spring season with a 12-9 overall record,including10-6(4thplace)intheNorthwestConference.TheBearcatsalsoqualifiedfortheNWCTournament. DuringthespringWUwas5-3athomeand7-6ontheroad.TheBearcatsdefeatedLewis&ClarkCollegetwicetohelpsolidifyfourthplaceintheNWC. NataliaAgarycheva (Jr.) earned an 18-2record in singles during the regular seasonand went to the Round of 16 at the Ojai

TournamentinCalifornia.Shewonherfirstround match, then defeated the #12 seedand fell to the#7 seed. Sheowned a 20-3recordfollowingthetournament. Agarycheva was 14-1 in singles duringthe conference schedule. She was namedNWCPlayerof theYear. Shewasranked#4insinglesintheWestRegionof NCAADivisionIII. Indoubles,AgarychevaandteammateShannonPalmer(So.) were ranked #7 in the West Regionandachieveda10-5record.

Senior Alyssa Morrison concluded herWillamette career with a solid season. Shewent 14-7 in the singles, including 11-5 inNWCregularseasonmatches.
