2010 MEDIA GUIDE4

The 2010 OU baseball team looks to build on its 12 win season a year ago with the addition of 44 new varsity and junior varsity, and three new as-sistant coaches. The Braves have even more talent this season. This makes the coaching staff believe if the prepara-tion is good enough that they should be entering every game expecting to not only compete but win. “I think that we have a much different mind set than we did last year,” said OU head coach Joe Reed. “We have to buy into that and believe in it. We have to go out there and expect good things to happen and to follow our talent and trust in our abilities. If we take care of other things that will lead us to success on the field then the wins and losses will take care of themselves.” The energy level and team chemistry is very good, especially with the new players enter-ing the program.

PitchingThe pitching staff is much deeper than last year with the additions of key transfers that will help solidify some experience. “That is one thing that going into the season that we were looking at,” said Reed. “We knew that we were not going to have a lot of ex-perience if we didn’t get some trans-fers.” Steve Marks, a NCAA Division I transfer from LeMoyne University, has joined the team. “He has division one experience, understands the game and knows how to attack hitters,” said Reed. Gustavo Sanchez, from Cara-bobo, Venezuela, is another transfer that has joined the Braves this season from Western Nebraska Community College. “He blends his responsibly in the classroom, said Reed. “He has es-tablished himself as one of our top left handers.”

The Braves pitching staff did not have a left hander last year and this year OU has five. Playing matchups will be huge for the OU pitching staff and they will be able to play the percent-ages. Another transfer that has joined the Braves is left hander Solomon Haberkost, a transfer from Cleveland State University. “He is a gifted pitcher. It determines how healthy he can stay and how much control he continues to develop depends on the season he will have, and eventually what the team will have,” said Reed. “Anytime you have a

left hander that can throw up to 93 mph at a program like this and a conference like the KCAC you always have to feel good about your chances when he is on the mound.”

The fourth spot could be filled by Matt Croft, Chris Robertson, Dustin Balmer ,and Cole Meeks. “All of those guys give us an opportunity to compete and all of them have good stuff.” Right now, according to the OU coaching staff, the edge goes to Matt Croft, “Croft has some of the best stuff on the staff. He is tall, has good velocity and a good command of his pitches,” said Reed. “He gives us a good possibility as a number four starter.

The other guys will come out of the pen and be joined by Jonathan Sebring, Josh Brooks, possibly Derek Seifert and Jake Kissner.” There are 16 guys that could pitch at any time on the var-sity roster and all can be competitive for OU. Being a former pitcher and having a number of pitchers sign pro-fessional contracts, Reed feels like the pitching staff is the strongest aspect of the team. “We are going to have a chance to compete at not only the con-ference level but at the regional level as well,” said Reed. “If we line up our-selves to compete at the regional level we will win the conference.”

InfieldThe infield is much improved from last year. There are still some ques-tion marks, especially at the corners. Shortstop though looks to be Spencer Augustine with Brett Miller to be his backup. Third base could be either Ja-son Beers or Brian Cecil to start the season but the OU coaching staff is also looking at Miller and what Greg Wisner, a true freshman, can bring to the table. “Wisner has a good stick and a good understanding of the game at third,” said Reed. At second base the projected starter is OU’s lone returning All-KCAC performer, Mitch Vielhau-er. Last season, Vielhauer spent most of his time at shortstop. Tyler Bish and Greg Wisner are both battling for a spot as his backup.

First base will be a mix between Josh Sturm, who will probably be the Braves primary first baseman, Mike McManemin, Cody Larson, or Allan

Bleich. At catcher ,OU lost the service Second Team All-KCAC performer Tony Hurla, but the OU coaching staff believes that transfer Christian Rivera will provide experience behind the plate. The transfer from East Texas Baptist University has junior college plus NCAA Division III experience. “He is a really heads up guy that knows how to take charge of a pitching staff and I am very confident with him back there,” said Reed. “It is nice to have him there because it was another big hole to fill.” Backing Rivera up will be either Josh Ragsdale or Johnny Vil-lotti.

OutfieldBesides pitching, the outfield is one of OU’s strongest defensive stops. “We have guys that can cover a lot of ground, have good arms and can get the ball in quickly,” said Reed. Right now Sam Engle, Jon Breedlove, Brett Gear-hart, and Dustin Balmer are OU’s top outfielders. Gearhart is a transfer from Culver Stockton College and Balmer is a true freshman from Litchfield Park, Ariz. Engle will either be in center or left and Breedlove, a transfer from For-est Park Community College, will be in center or left field. “Breedlove has a lot experience, a lot of speed and a great understanding of the game,” said Reed. “He is one of those guys, like Engle, that can be interchangeable.” Gearhart and Balmer will both be platooning in right field.

ScheduleThe NAIA is going to implement a power index for ranking with strength of schedule being one of the factors for the rankings. This year, the schedule is more demanding. OU will play William Jewell College, a top team in the area. In addition, OU will play Park Univer-sity, Mid America Nazarene University and Baker University. The Braves will play a majority of the Heart of America Athletic Conference teams which will give them a good indication about how they will do in the KCAC.

Joe Reed2nd Season as Head CoachWilliam Jewell College

Coach Reed led the 2009 Braves finished to an overall record of 12-38 and a KCAC record of 8-16. Reed had four players earn All-KCAC honors, Eric Cordell (1st Team), Tony Hurla (2nd Team), Mitch Vielhauer (HM), and Nate Radtke (HM). Cord-ell earned three straight KCAC Pitcher of the Week honors and was named KCAC Pitcher of the Year. Both Cordell and Hurla signed professional baseball contracts. Cordell signed to pitch for the River City Rascals of the Independent Frontier League

and Hurla signed to play for the Dohren Wild Farmers, professional team in Germany.

Prior to coming to Ottawa University, Reed spent four seasons as the general manager of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes National Baseball Ministry, a highly competitive summer baseball program headquartered in Kansas City. As the General Manager, he performs numerous responsibilities including athletic director, coach, sports information director, website manager, compliance director, recruiting coordinator, game day and events promotion manager, player development, and scouting.

Before joining the national staff of the FCA, Reed had developed a well-rounded coaching background includ-ing three years as the head baseball coach at Asbury College, a NAIA school in Wilmore, Kentucky. While at Asbury, team GPA, class attendance and recruiting were at all-time highs. After coaching at Asbury, Reed served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Transylvannia University, an NCAA III school in Lexington, Kentucky.

Reed has offered private baseball instruction throughout his career and has coached at least 20 players that have either been drafted by Major League Baseball or signed independent professional contracts.

Reed spent his collegiate career at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. where he was a pitcher from 1992-1996. He graduated with a degree in exercise science with an emphasis in athletic training. Reed was a four year starter and helped lead the Cardinals to the 1994 Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Cham-pionship. He also holds the school record for most pickoffs in a season with 14. Following graduation, he ac-cepted a position at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. where he served as an assistant baseball coach and helped the Lions to two straight 40 win seasons. At Lindenwood, he served as assistant pitching coach, assistant recruiting coordinator and athletic trainer. Coach Reed is working on his master’s degree in Sports Management at the University of Central Missouri.

Reed and his wife Vonny have two sons, Caleb and Nolan.

The 2010 Lady Braves have high expectations and not only expect to compete for a KCAC Championship, but qualify and compete at the NAIA Softball National Tournament.

This year the team chemistry has been there from the start. “The girls get along great and they have worked very hard,” said OU Head Coach Jay Kahnt. “Our top goal is to win a conference championship and get to nationals. I think that is a goal that drives us and makes us work hard to reach that goal. We also have the ex-pectation of when we get to the na-tional tournament of competing and winning some games down there.”

The OU coaching staff believes that the defense could be the best all around defense that the program has ever had and that the offense will be able to push runs across.

InfieldersThe infield is anchored by three time All-KCAC performer shortstop Ash-ley Mundy. At first base, the Lady Braves have Emily Fuerst, a part-time starter for the past two seasons. She was named All-KCAC Honor-able Mention her freshman season. At second base OU has returner and All-KCAC honorable mention per-former in Korey Higbie. Third base is the lone question mark. There are a few candidates for the position and the coaching staff believes that whoever they put there will be very good.

CatcherThe Lady Braves will miss the ser-vices of First Team All-KCAC catch-er Josie Hildebrand. Kahnt believes that they have found a replacement in senior Lori Ewalt. She spent the past three years playing first base but has stepped into the role very well. “Lori’s biggest attribute is her work ethic behind the plate and she has

a great relationship with the pitch-ers. She is a natural leader which is something that you want behind the plate.”

OutfieldThe outfield, if they stay healthy, could be one of the fastest outfields in not just the conference, but in the NAIA. “We have Lindsey Tutor in left, Myah Sprew in center and Erin Michael in right,” said Kahnt. “There are not going to be too many teams that are going to be able to match our speed.” According to Kahnt, the OU pitchers love the fact that if they give up a fly ball it is probably going to get caught.

PitchersThis year’s pitching staff is the deep-est that OU has had in a while. The Lady Braves return the services of sophomore Ashley Renaldi, a Second Team All-KCAC performer. “With a year of maturity and a chance to get stronger, we are expecting big-ger and better things out of her this year,” said Kahnt. “She really gives us a true ace on the mound.”

Mundy is going to come out of re-tirement after spending her junior year at shortstop. She will play both positions this year. “If you look at her stats during her sophomore and freshman seasons they were very good,” said Kahnt. “So we have two girls that have experience on the mound. They are both very capable of shutting teams down for extended periods of time and giving our of-fense a chance to score runs.”

There is nice balance with Andrea Horn, who is a junk pitcher and Courtney Livingston who will give OU some time on the mound. OU has two freshmen, left hander Mor-gan Shramek and right handed pitch-er Morgan Beckler, that have both exceeded expectations. “Shramek’s

ball moves differently and Beckler is just a pitcher. She knows what to do and does it well,” said Kahnt. The OU coaching staff likes their depth and believes that it will be a huge success this year.

ScheduleThe schedule is a tough one for the Lady Braves. OU plays Mount Mercy College, a team that had 40 plus wins last season, twice. OU plays Morningside College and the national runner-up, Saint Gregory’s University. The Lady Braves will face Friends University, Park Uni-versity and Missouri Valley College all three were at the national tourna-ment last year. There are not easy games on the OU schedule and the Lady Braves will have to come and play to give themselves a chance to win. “If we are going to be as good as we want to be, those are the teams we are going to have to beat,” said Kahnt. “We are going to be more than prepared for our conference with this schedule.”

Jay Kahnt9th Season as Head CoachOttawa University

Under Coach Jay Kahnt’s leadership, the 2009 Lady Braves broke a total of eight team and individual records and defeated two nationally ranked softball teams for the first time in school history. OU had eight players earn All-KCAC honors, the most in program history. The 2009 Lady Braves ended the season with an overall record of 26-18 and a KCAC record of 12-4. OU finished third in the KCAC regular season and third in the KCAC Post Season Tournament.

During the 2008 season, Kahnt earned his 100th head coaching victory as the Lady Braves earned their third straight Region IV Tournament birth. The Lady Braves set a school record for season victories with 31 and had seven players earn All-KCAC honors and for the third straight season a player earn Region IV honors.

In 2007, the Lady Braves won their first KCAC Regular Season Championship and finished second in the KCAC Post Season Tournament for the second year in a row. Kahnt earned Co-KCAC Coach of the Year honors.

In 2006, OU became the first team in KCAC history to reach the NAIA Softball National Tournament by winning the programs first NAIA Region IV Touranment Championshp.

Kahnt has coached 12 first team All-KCAC selections and six First Team All-Region IV selections. He has coached the softball program’s first NAIA Region IV Player-of-the-Year and has had 11 players earn NAIA Daktronics All-American Scholar Athlete honors.

Kahnt was a student assistant from 1997-2000 for the men’s basketball team before becoming a full-time assistant in 2000 and continued in that position until 2006. He was a player in the Braves basketball program during the 1996-97 season before deciding to become a coach. Kahnt graduated from Ottawa University in 2000 with a degree in business administration. In 2002, he received his master’s degree in sports administration from the University of Kansas. Coach Kahnt is an instructor in the Physical Education Department and director of intramurals.

Kahnt, his wife Elizabeth and their daughter, Emma, reside in Ot-tawa.
